RAM 1500 Sagging Park Brake Cable FIX (The REAL Cause) + Deep Snow 4x4 Mountain Adventure

  • How to fix your sagging park brake cable on your RAM 1500 can be pretty easy, but to actually fix the real cause it may require a little more time and money unfortunately. This seems to be a pretty common issue with these 4th gen RAM 1500 trucks and as I was filming some other clips I noticed how low my cable had gotten. Like I show in the video the most likely cause is the park brake cable levers at the rear brakes is most likely stuck slightly forward and can even have the E-brakes slightly applied causing heat/ frictions and ruined your fuel economy. possibly even pulling the truck in one direction or the other. This happens because a lot of the time the parking brake components on these trucks tend to become very corroded or the parking brake shoes crack and fall off, jamming themselves between the inside the of the rotor and the parking brake hardware. ALL not good.
So unfortunately the correct way to really fix this issue (for the most part) is the pull the wheels and replaced the parking brake shoes and hardware. Now just by hammering back those parking brake levers you can probably buy yourself some time as long as you don't actually use the park brake.
I've also seen other videos where guys can get lucky with just lubing the parking brake levers from the outside and it does help the problem but me personally, I would at least want to pull the wheels and have a look at the parking brake making sure that it was indeed okay and just need some lube.
ALSO threw in some clips of me playing the snow, I was hoping to test out the traction control stuff in 4x4 or 4WD LOCK but the snow was just too deep the time I got to where I wanted to test. So hope you enjoy my little adventure up the mountain in a snow storm.
Hope you guys enjoyed the video!

The cable sag is a minor visual inconvenience. The fact is; your parking brake is dragging causing the ABS system to throw codes. And wear out your braking system. It is caused by salted road corrosion. Should have been one of many recalls

Hammer it back and zip tie it. Got it.

This is why every so often you should drive vehicle with radio off and no fan so you can listen for a dragging sound

Question: If it isn’t getting hanged up but your cable is just loose should I just use the adjuster? Also great video look of good information!

well the audio kind of sucked but hopefully a new Mic will clear that up lol. and thank you. yes its incredible how much rust and crab can build up on a relatively new truck here in Canada. I feel like every Canadian had battled deep snow at some point haha. Merry Christmas!

My 2015 is doing the same thing. I need to push the lever back into position. Just curious, did you ever replace the e brake shoes? Just wondering if that’s the solution or if there are additional parts that need to be replaced other than the shoes. I want to permanently fix this issue, not a temporary fix and have to constantly get under there to push the lever every time but not exactly sure what the permanent fix is.

Ya I replaced the brake shoes. Not the prettiest job but it worked well. And I always used the park brake and it still happened to me which is weird.

All Ram has to do is choose moly steel for these parts: no corrosion. About a 2.00 fix. Transport Canada should force a recall.

I've wrenched for years as a young lad and always hated ebrakes! Always needed to replace something on vehicles purchased as used and required for road worthiness. I did however, start using mine on a 2016 with very low miles. My driveway at camp is on an incline so I would engage them when parked. Had the droopy cable problem and snugged it up ever so slightly. My truck is in the garage for a broken front axle (Northern Ontario potholes) and the they just called and said my ebrake pads had disintegrated and everything's seized! Told them to fix it and never, ever use those cursed ebrakes again!!

Just fixed mine. The adjuster as you call it is actually a lever. That part does not come in a hardware kit and must be purchased separately. That lever gets corroded or stuck and is the actual problem.

I have this issue and did not know this. I bought a powerstop brake kit a few Months ago and wanted to wait til it got alot warmer here in Wisconsin. but I started to hear a dragging noise. Assuming it was the rear diff. I jacked up the rear of the truck and put in drive and noticed it was coming from the wheels. I started to disassemble the brakes and pulled the rotors and the parking brake shoes just fell off. The parking brake lever actuator can not even be moved by hand. The lever is what you pushed back with the punch. So I basically rebuilt everything in the rear bags. Parking brake lever, shoes, hardware, then my new drilled slotted rotors and pads from powerstop. Did not look at the sagging cable yet to see if it fixed it but sure it helped with just alittle adjustment at the adjuster needed hopefully. Thanks for the help. And this confirms your theory.

I did mine just like yours powerstop everything, my shoes fell off as well it was rusty all over, I pulled the axles cleaned everything and when I put everything back I took my break grease with a brush and brushed all the components that rub together, all moves freely, I'm jumping to the front now.

damn, I figured that's why my cable was hanging, thanks for the confirmation, time to fix... meh I need a brake job anyways, might as well.
Hey though, since we're all gathered here. Has anyone had the issue where wet heavy snow accumulates around the transmission and prevents you from being able to shift back into park after driving? Then you gotta hop under in the snow and clear the snow out from around the tranny so you can shift into park and take your key out of the ignition and lock up before you leave. Just another issue I've had which seems like an engineering oversight.

This is shocking in some ways because I use my e-brake pretty often. I can understand moparas are inexpensive and they don't have super high quality parts. I knew this going in, but I just figured is often as I use it which is at least once a week I didn't think that I would have this issue. Thank you for posting.

Wrangler Duractracs. I really like them. Up here in Canada a lot of guys run them because they are highly rated for snow and ice but still have a good bite in mud and sand. slightly more aggressive that the Ko2's but still very comparable to them.

What I like about dodges they are fun to work on. In any vehicle some things can be not fun that’s just how they go if a vehicle is extremely easy to work on it can mean everything mechanically on it isn’t as reliable as something that’s easy and tough or… it’s just the design of the thing. Lol

For anyone looking to do the real fix and replace the parking brake levers inside the rear drums, just know that you may need an angle grinder or some cutout tool to get the levers out. Thanks to the design of the drums the lever inside can only be removed one way and that's ONLY if the lever still moves which if it did you wouldn't be replacing it. So since the lever is likely rusted shut and cannot actuate properly, you cannot remove it from its place without hammering it loose possibly causing damage to other components, or taking an angle grinder to the lever arm and getting it out that way. Just know its a b@#$^ to deal with and not really worth it unless you are already doing a planned parking brake change.
