  • In this weeks video, I explore Composition in Abstract Art, an share painting samples that actually show these compositions. I talk about the two concepts that make up what I personally believe to be strong principles in creating my abstracts and how knowing composition might help in getting "unstuck" or help when a painting is just not working.

    Thanks for that, Cheryl it’s been a while since I thought of composition I used to do lots of cruciform designs working to a focal point using shapes colour harmony and accents, then you get a year or two down the line and you can forget this design principle and just do your own thing, thanks to you I will go back to setting out my work write it down and select colours I will use and marks I will make and the composition bearing in mind lights and darks even the rule of thirds, as these methods are proven over many many years to be pleasing to the viewers eye so thank you for this refresher course xx

      thank you for watching!! And for your incredible comment. I think value and differences in shapes make the most difference in by work personally. I wish you so much success in your painting.

    I almost clicked off of your video because you didn't feel confident about your work to me. I stuck with it, and I LOVE your work. I love the variety, I think they are all executed and represent the compositional ideas powerfully. I also love that I sense that you are always questioning yourself to critique and improve. Bravo, you are a true artist. 👩‍🎨

    Thank you Cheryl. Saw many videos of composition in theory but yours is the first one I saw compositions in the actual paintings. You showing it in your own painting has made it easy for me to understand. Thank you once again.

    I'm so pleased that I've 'discovered' you. Thank you for such a clear video - I now feel empowered! (Btw, the drawing of the resting woman at the end of the video was done by Matisse.)

    Thanks for the composition types descriptions and examples. The three point or triangular looks like an Henri Matisse piece or a work done after Matisse. I've seen that exact composition and subject matter in his work.

    You’re such a great instructor/teacher. Sorry to hear about your mama 😢. I just lost my 101 year old grandad, then 3 weeks later I ended up in hospital discovering I had a rare aorta issue called fmd… fibro muscular dysphasia. I missed multiple videos of yours and missed your exit for 8 weeks; however, I’m glad we’re both back and onward with our purposes and honing in on them, as we continue our journey of growth

    Hi, Cheryl! Thanks for a really well-done explanation of different compositions. Your insight about muscle memory is valuable; I'm still learning and hoping that good compositions come intuitively for me, eventually. I'm saving this to watch again.

    • @CherylWilsonArt

      I have been doing some thinking about the muscle memory and the other aspect in our art that voice that is within each of us as artists and how it comes out when we let ourselves start to explore in our art.

    Hi Cheryl, this is a great video and your explanations with paintings that illustrate these compositions are much easier to understand than just looking at a diagram of compositions. The paintings are awesome, as usual. I was a little confused thinking that a piece should start with a specific composition in the diagrams. Personally, it's difficult for me paint that way, and go with the flow until something starts to happen during the process. Landscape is easier in that the composition seems to usually be horizontal.

      I hoped it might help bring compositions into a relatable conversation!!! Remember, the usage of values and then the differences in the objects seems to help me the most in my abstracts

    It kind of seems like your balanced composition‘Emotional Conversation’ could be seen as a 3 point triangular composition: there’s the leaf shape over the writing on the left, and the darker markings to the right making a triangle. 🤔

    This was a very helpful video, thank you! I have a question. If you create intuitively, do you begin to push and edit the composition towards a specific direction at some point, like after adding beginning intuitive layers? Or do you continue intuitively all the way through and only notice the composition in the very final layers or after it's essentially finished?

    • @CherylWilsonArt
      @CherylWilsonArt  7 месяцев назад

      Normally, I create and paint as I feel the painting taking me. It is as you say intuitive all the way and in the end stage, IF the painting is not working for me I go into composition mode and see what might change!!! There are days all the paintings work and days NOTHING works, I ride out those days. I do many layers normally, so I have to wait for things to dry many days!!
