  • Abstract painting - what is it? You need to know, what abstract means to you.

    Full painting tutorial. I demonstrate my own workflow: getting ideas, working with inspiration and in practice from start to finish showing how to paint a large painting using acrylic paint.
    In for the last couple of weeks I have been working on a painting. Some of you might recognize it from the background in my earlier videos, and I will also talk about what I mean, when I say that this work is abstract.
    Abstract painting allows you to express yourself without the limitation of realism. Your painting doesn't have to look like anything you already know, and the only limitations of an abstract painting are the ones you set for yourself.
    Some people believe it's easy to paint abstract paintings, but it is not. When you want to paint something out of the blue with no resemblance to the known world around us, you must bring something different to the painting … you must expose your own personality for everyone to see. That can be hard.
    Today the word abstract is often used to describe paintings which depicts something our brain cannot immediately recognize. Our brain then tries to find known patterns in what we see, it searches for something … anything … it can use, and this surge is open for more possibilities. This is why abstract paintings occasionally can inspire us to feel all kind of things, moods or experiences of a non-visual kind.
    At least this is my way of understanding what abstract painting is doing to us. Slightly simplified, I believe that when I paint an abstract painting part of the picture is inspired by experiences from outside my head, and part of it is inspired by experiences from inside my head.
    The balance between outside-/inside experience varies, and the more non-figurative or abstract a painting is, the more I find my inspiration from inside my head.
    I am quite sure that many will disagree with me so feel free to comment below.
    In the world of music you may recognize the sound of a locomotive or a galloping horse in the rhythm of the music. We can experience music as sad or cheerful, we can even get touched to tears, because of the way the music affects our emotions. We only hear the music, we sense nothing else, so music is a pure abstraction, and it’s kind of the same thing I want to do in my paintings.
    What are the colours of a kiss or the feeling of hunger? In the video I give my interpretation in an abstract painting and I find it more interesting than painting something figurative.
    I graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Art not as a painter, but as an architect. During my studies I spent a lot of time drawing and painting especially with water colours. I can paint a figurative painting, which I often do when on holiday. I sit in a cozy cafe in Rome or somewhere else and paint what I see. I enjoy this a lot, and it reinforces and prolongs my memory of this very place, but that's not what makes my heart beat faster ... it's painting abstract paintings, which I do alone in my studio.
    This is what this video is about: to paint an abstract painting from start to finish.
    I hope you will like this video.
    Enjoy.
    Kind regards
    Henrik Skorá

    I’m an artist and have spent years trying and learning to make my work more loose and abstract and it’s a sincere struggle to make things flow in the abstract process. Like you said, it’s definitely not easy at all to do and I completely admire those with the ability to make magic happen. Your work is beautiful.

      In my opinion, abstract art is the language of feelings. Art in general is a form of expression and communication. Abstract art is no different. The simplest way to create abstract art is to ‘let go’. Let go of any thought process of creating art. Paint your feelings. Use any colour that comes to mind in any shape that comes to mind. Select any other colour you ‘feel’ would complement the previous colour and shape. Feel the second colour and shape and whether it is communicating with the previous colour and shape. Your colours, your shapes and lines become your own painting vocabulary. The first challenge with creating meaningful abstract art is how to ‘let go’. The second challenge is how to ‘paint your feelings’ on a piece of paper or canvas. That’s my opinion as a non-representational abstract artist. Thank you for your comment and thank you Henrik for a great explanation.

    I love that you discuss how abstract painting is in fact more difficult than it seems! It is so true and I don't think people realize that until they actually try to paint an abstract. Creating something out of nothing as opposed to having a reference image with all the colors and composition laid out for you is so much more challenging. I enjoyed this video-thanks!

    • @skora-theoldguy

      Yes, it may seem like figurative painting is easier from a mental point of view because you have something to hold on to...it "just" has to look like something.
      But, that is not entirely true, because a good figurative painting shows a lot more than just something that looks like something. You could say that what lies beyond the figurative is actually very abstract ... ha, ha ... it's kind of funny.
      Thank you very much for your comment. Greetings from Denmark.

    Just beautiful work. Before I saw your process I wondered how your ’big’ idea for the work comes to fruition. Now I see it’s all the color relationships and color temperatures, the variety of shapes that work together that keeps your first ‘big’ idea moving to completion. Very intellectual and expressive at the same time. Thanks for sharing and helping us, new to abstraction, artists!

    Abstract painting - expressing yourself without the limitation of reality. I love the way you think. Most difficult thing for me is to begin. You said just begin and you will become fully detached from the initial experience that was used to start the painting!
    I hope I can get to that point where I could become an observer … not just the painter. Thank you for your video 😊

      After all, there is nothing wrong with colored areas in paintings. Many people are working with that, and maybe it is a good start for you. Forget all ambitions to paint a great picture from the very start. In any case, your first won't be your best ... but it might be the first ... if you get started.
      Good luck with your first painting...and all the ones to come.
      Kind regards

      Michelemaliano: Look at a lot of famous abstract artists work. Google image is good for that. Find someone you like and let their work influence your work. Helen Frankenthaler is a great abstract artist who knows how to work with abstract elements. Take a look at her work and see how creative she is. Learning abstract painting is like learning a language, you develop a visual language that evolves into your own imagery. Kinda like learning Jazz.

    I discovered you today and I can not express how excited I am to see all the rest of your videos - I am an abstract artist as well ( no RUclips though) - the way you see and convey on canvas is brilliant - your works on the larks nest was so fundamental for me as I was always taught that one idea per canvas was how to do it right - thank you so much for sharing your insight and being a voice of the process to abstract being a 'work' of art.

      Hi Anastasia,
      I am very pleased that you find value in my videos. I googled you but unfortunately can't find any of your paintings.
      I attach a lot of importance to my process and work a lot to develop it. Because if it is OK, the results should come.
      But I'm an old man, I'm not going to hang out at the big museums and I'm fine with that. I love the process in front of the painting and that's what's important to me... and then half a year ago I started the YT videos... and they were surprisingly fun to make.
      Thank you for your nice comment.

    I actually started with abstract, when I did, I didn't know that it was one of the hardest methods of painting to not only paint but to understand or visualize what I was trying to convey. So I didn't know it was suppose to be hard. I was always drawn to viewing abstract over other genre because I like the mystic or hidden message the artist was trying to covey. I love it when people stare at my work and then say "I see a....." The fact is that I made some one stare, and uh.... think or open their minds to something new. I never correct anyone even if I named it "cat" and they see a mountain. Most of the time my work is intuitive/spontaneous and never gets named until I'm finished. I start by laying down layer after layer of thin paint building on each layer until I see what my minds eye/brain is seeing. I paint on a table and sometimes an easel but for every piece I paint I will place on the easel and not look at it until I get all the way on the other side of my studio, it is then I turn and look and it is that very first second I view it, it will tell me if I'm finished, it is that emotional attachment that once it happens you'll understand what you are doing is what your brain wants you to do. You know abstract art is really never finished... you just have to learn to "stop" and knowing when comes through experience and practice. So, paint, paint, paint.

      Ha, ha ... thank you and yes. The process is your own. Your stories and other people's stories are never the same, and non't spoil it for them by correcting them.
      I say e.g. interesting ...oh you think so ... wow you are really looking into my painting ... and make comments like that. It's a privilege to hear other people's take on something you've created.
      They are completely allowed to have their own story ... but remember also do not let them tell you "your story", ans use criticism exclusively to develop your painting not to limit you.

      Hello and thank you very much for your comment.
      I am sure that if you continue your search for an expression that is all your own, you will eventually find it.
      I paint many pictures that are based on each other. You know the game where you whisper something in the ear of your sidekick, and he then whispers it to his sidekick and so on. After the message has gone through many stages, the message will be different than when you started it. I sometimes work in the same way.
      Style is something you must work for, it grow with the years.
      Good luck.

      I think we all suffer from time to time that we are not satisfied with what we paint. I don't believe you'll ever be completely satisfied. I try to focus on the fact that I have to make an effort and that I have to develop myself. If I do that, I must be close to satisfied. Then in the nearest future I must try again to paint the perfect painting ... again and again.
      This process is interesting ... and fun ... so go for it ... and have fun.

    I had been doing strongly representational and illustrative work. I still love illustration and have not abandoned it, but some years ago I discovered Shibori and started dying fabrics. My fabrics became my pallet and my work became more abstract. I incorporate paint, embroidery, bones, wire, and beads with the dyed fabric. My inspiration comes from the natural world, plants animals, minerals, and processes like corrosion. In college, I would illustrate processes as a study tool. I have a motivation from an idea from an inspiration for a start. I can't predict what the finished piece will look like until it is finished, and have never been able to force the piece to become something intended. It becomes what it does, step by step, solving one "problem" after another.
    BTW, I do like your style.

      I always start with some kind of idea for the painting. The idea is my "helper" throughout the process. If I start without an idea, and don't find it very quickly, my paintings tend to drown in a lot of irrelevant details.
      So try always to find an idea for the painting quickly. My upcoming video is actually about idea, composition and ... the hard work.
      Good luck painting.

    I really appreciate you.🙏 I agree with many of these comments, you are an inspiration and a very good teacher. To those who are uncertain what to paint, try acrylic flow painting. I got into it after watching some videos, it looked fun and it is. As a beginner, it's helpful because you really have to let go of control. Once the paint hits the canvas, you can use your imagination and refine it. My favorite flow-style abstract looks like a beautiful colorful nebula in space. Happy painting!😊

      Nice to hear that you have started painting. For many, this is the difficult hurdle to overcome. But you just have to get started. If the painting turns out to be bad, you can paint it over and start again. Also ... You are not a champion right from the start. Paint, paint paint ...
      Good luck on your journey towards a good painting, and enjoy the process.

      Thank you.
      When I think about what is inspiring to me in visual art, the abstract expression is not always the winner. Not all painters who paint abstract paintings interest me.
      There is nothing wrong in the fact, that you do not get much from looking at the abstract paintings, and it is not always that the artists have taken the time and trouble to reach out to you.
      I enjoy both Caravaggio and Kandinsky, and I like both the directions they represent in art. But when I paint myself, I prefer the abstract expression, and the greatest experiences, I have had with visual art, I have found in the abstract og semi abstract paintings (e.g Van Gogh, Picasso ...).
      I'm glad my videos showed you something you hadn't seen before, and thank you for your kind comment.
      Kind regards

      @skora-theoldguy  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hi. Thank you for your comment.
      OK ... but 11:54 is too loose for me. I can see that the unfinished and sketchy expression has its own quality, and I also work to keep it in my pictures, one way or another. But my style and my heart probably lie more in the very precise and fully worked out expression.

    • @brandonmagnus4414
      @brandonmagnus4414 6 месяцев назад

      @@skora-theoldguyI meant that I liked the quality of transparency at that stage, not necessarily the fact that the painting was loose or unfinished. It really does come down to preference though. I look forward to seeing more of your paintings, these are the types of abstract paintings that deserve a spotlight, not the ones with a single dot in the center of the canvas that sell for $10,000+ …

    I used to think abstract paintings looked easy...until I tried it. Wow, it's hard. I love doing landscapes and have done a couple abstracts, but they are very difficult. You really have to understand how to make it look 3 dimensional and not "flat." I am a perfectionist and find it very difficult to "let go" and have fun. You are very talented. Thank you for the video!

    • @skora-theoldguy
      @skora-theoldguy  6 месяцев назад

      Remember that painting should be fun.
      When I paint, it's because I want to say something, but maybe only to myself. It's a form of freeing the mind, and I don't have any particular ambitions, for example whether it should be flat or in three dimensions... just a painting.
      It's hard because you constantly ask yourself: What now ... but no one has expectations of me, and if the painting doesn't turn out well, not all of them succeed for me, I just leave it at that an put it away for a few weeks. Also remember that the "perfect" is the enemy of the "good", and one's own expectations may ruin it for you.
      Painting should be fun, and if it's not, I'll stop for a while and take a break.
      Good luck with your paintings figurative or abstract.

    I finally understood how to paint an abstract, properly, when a wise mentor explained that the goal is to capture the essence of your subject. It is very challenging to express the “feelings” associated with a place, object, experience, or memory, etc. One has to turn inward, evoke the feelings to be expressed, and hold them there while you turn back outward to then illustrate them onto your canvas. Not easy at all.

    • @skora-theoldguy
      @skora-theoldguy  5 месяцев назад

      Yes.
      Just go for it ... easily or not ... but be careful, not to set the ambition too high. Emotions af hard to paint.
      What you talk about, is figuring out what to paint, emotions and all. It is extraordinarily beautiful, if you are able to do what you describe.
      When I myself am not quite capable of what you describe, my strategy is thinking that the important thing is not what you paint, but how you paint it.
      What a fine comment. Thank you.

    First of all, beautiful work, sir! As an abstract artist myself, I like to relate abstract art to instrumental music, particularly Classical and Jazz. There is no real subject matter defined by lyrics, but rather the mood, or feeling the music gives to the listener is subjective to that listener. The music is still somewhat bound by the basics such as time, scales, key, notes rhythm, tone etc etc. In the same way abstract art is somewhat bound by things like color, composition, value, line, shape etc etc. The abstractness of both art and music frees the viewer or listener to interpret the work as they see or hear it.

    • @skora-theoldguy
      @skora-theoldguy  4 месяца назад

      Hi
      Yes, the music means a lot to me too. Both when I play it myself and when I listen to it. Music is in many ways a "true" abstract expression, because you experience emotions without any sensory impressions other than sound. Therefore, listening to music very often inspires me.
      In all expressions there are some structures and "rules of the game" that you can either work with or against... I have to admit that I very often work with them.
      Thank you for your comment

    Most of the time I create a painting as a result of something that happens in my life….. and it happens a lot….. I need to paint to ease my thoughts and feelings. My first step is to choose the colors… if I am sad is blue if I am happy I wil take the red to start with and from that moment the other colors come alone…. I have a lot of unfinished paintings….sometimes I comeback an finished thinking about what happend that day. Crayzy comment. ……?

      Hello. Thank you.
      I think my process is very much based on me bringing myself into a state og mind where I feel mentally connected to the painting. I don't think much but react to an impulse ... well, that's flow to me.
      When I'm past the initial phase, where I make plans for the picture ... colors and composition ... then I look at the painting and find that something is missing. Then I add it ... again and again ... maybe change the plan.
      When there is nothing more I can add, the picture is finished.
      But I try not to think too much. I like to say, I react on the impuls. Like a swordsman, he does not thing he reacts.
