What Makes a Good Abstract Painting?

  • I often meet artists who are frustrated with their attempts to make abstract paintings. They feel a pull towards abstraction, but they don't like the results. I believe there are two reasons why this happens... a) lack of clear intention and b) lack of knowledge in a few key areas. The good news is that both can easily be fixed. The issue is NOT a lack of talent ... you just need a little bit more information.
I am on a mission to help artists find their own unique voice and make exciting, original artwork that is truly unique. If this sounds exciting, join my weekly artist's newsletter at www.louiseflet...
Each week, I share tips, tricks, advice, and inspiration to help you take your art to the next level.

😁🖌️I painted two abstracts in my journal and was listening to a wonderful CD of orchestra and a very upbeat violinist my mother sent me they were colorful and very gestural. When my friend saw them ...she said , "I see music." I turned the pages and showed her they were named Music #1 and Music #2. It was really amazing to me that she saw it!

Out of a dozen paintings I get maybe one I just about like. I’m spending most of the time painting over until it gets difficult to hide the mess beneath. Lately I’m trying to paint with someone in mind, and reason that if they like the result then who cares if I or anyone else like it. That feels a good approach so it’s very encouraging to hear an artist say something similar. I still don’t get colours and values, even when it looks okay I don’t know why, but this approach gives me something like a reference image and some idea of how much I must learn.

After many months of experimentation and having no success with painterly abstraction, I've been making better progress with a more flat/graphical style which has been working well. It does irk me a liitle when people say abstract art is easy or a cop out way to paint, neither are true,I came to abstraction over a period of time and now work soley as an abstract painter both traditionally and digitally and it actually feels totally natural to me to paint in this way. I used to be a large scale figure painter and would struggle for ideas or get artist's block, but since becoming an abstract painter I never struggle or get lost for ideas. I found it really frees up my mark making, how I see and work with colour even what I use to apply the paint. It's also enhanced by having the condition Synesthesia, which is when the senses get mixed up and work in tandem, it affects people different ways, for me I can see sound and hear colours, and it's really triggered by listening to music, certain pitches or notes really sets it off. Kandinsky had the condition too and you can see it in his work. I found working in abstract forms is really uplifting, be it as a final painting or working in my sketchbooks. I think it's also a more intuitive/instinctive way to paint, and for me to has a lyrical element to it. I find it really engages my creativity fully when I'm working on a painting.I feel a 'good' abstarct painting is when all the elements speak as a collective whole, the colours, the textures, the forms etc and the ideas that inspired it feels like it's been fully realised.I find looking at the work of other abstract painters it's the sense
of depth to their art work that always draws ,me in and you can get a sense of a moment or gesture captured, for me thats a 'good' abstract painting, when it moves me as I'm looking at it and trying to get a sense of connection with the artist that
created it,but also how that painting connects to me as well. It's so refreshing to hear your take on the idea of a 'good' abstract painting and it struck a chord with me too.

    • @ThisPaintingLife

I always thought I'm weird and a little mad because the "traditional" art did not really attract me however I admire their work and as an newby I copy many photos/artworks but it's not feeling true to myself, I feel lonely. A truly beautiful and helpful video. Having listened to many artists try to explain their process and intention over the last 50 years, your presentation is extremely down-to-earth and insightful - a tricky thing to achieve in my opinion because it's about the process of engaging deep levels of abstraction within the artist in order to render an abstract image in a physical form, a painting. You hit all the major points in a very clear way. I love your emphasis on the fundamental skills that are always needed: use of color, value, and composition. Well done!

An aha moment for me, at last! At 63 I thought I was just too old to learn anything, although, I know that's not true. Everytime, I tried to paint and ended up with a big mess, I felt like such a failure and it affected me so much emotionally . That's how I knew that this is something that I was meant to do . Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Now the only question is: how do I make it say what I want it to say?
Only one way to find out.
Thank you Louise! You’ve inspired me!!

In my search of/ for the fundamentals of abstract painting , I turned to Google & You Tube.

Thank you Louise! You have made the nuts and bolts of abstract painting so very clear. I've never heard it expressed better. I have been struggling with it with hits and misses for quite a while and I think I can go back to it now with a new understanding and I appreciate you giving me that! Maggie Chalifoux

I have been trawling through tutorials with frustration. I feel as though I just found a friend. Thank you! My answer to your 2 questions was a sheepish "both". And then you went on to say that it was the same for you! I feel an inspired hope. 😊

Makes loads of sense. Thank you. Especially to emphasise the idea that this is difficult. I am struggling... but I am determined. Especially taking on board the idea of "intention".

Yes! Everyone should do themselves a favor and learn not just color, but balance and composition.

Replacing my nagging "make a great painting" with a bigger goal BRILLIANT! I was just trying to ignore it but I believe a bigger goal would work so much better. Thank you Thank you Thank you!

After trawling through so many art videos on youtube, this is the first and only one that has left me with more questions than answers and that is brilliant. Eight minutes of inspiring and thought provoking content. So nice to hear a Yorkshire person too. If you have any tips on how to gain inspiration from living in Leeds rather than beautiful North Yorks that would be greatly appreciated!

Wow this is just the video that I was looking for. After years of representational art, I feel bored and uninspired. I have so many "non literal" paintings but dont know where to start! New subscriber and also signed up for email alerts for Nicholas Wilton's next class!

This was such an amazing eye opener for me in so many ways! especially in regards to digging deeper into the "why" of what inspires me. i have taken many photography of nature over the years and looking at them i know exactly why I took the photo. I so enjoy the process of painting the challenge now seems to be something about putting that together with the why. thanks !!

Agreed. Abstract is very tricky. You have to learn the rules of color theory, line, space, form, etc., and then you have to know how to break the rules in such a specific way that makes it look like there were no rules to begin with. It's a weird type of inverted logic that works against itself just enough to captivate.
