What Makes a Good Abstract Painting?

  • I often meet artists who are frustrated with their attempts to make abstract paintings. They feel a pull towards abstraction, but they don't like the results. I believe there are two reasons why this happens... a) lack of clear intention and b) lack of knowledge in a few key areas. The good news is that both can easily be fixed. The issue is NOT a lack of talent ... you just need a little bit more information.
I am on a mission to help artists find their own unique voice and make exciting, original artwork that is truly unique. If this sounds exciting, join my weekly artist's newsletter at www.louiseflet...
Each week, I share tips, tricks, advice, and inspiration to help you take your art to the next level.

😁🖌️I painted two abstracts in my journal and was listening to a wonderful CD of orchestra and a very upbeat violinist my mother sent me they were colorful and very gestural. When my friend saw them ...she said , "I see music." I turned the pages and showed her they were named Music #1 and Music #2. It was really amazing to me that she saw it!

Great video. I've made the transition from Photorealism to Abstract Art after I began to feel unsatisfied with my work. After many months of experimentation and having no success with painterly abstraction, I've been making better progress with a more flat/graphical style which has been working well. My subject matter has also changed dramatically and is now focused on my physical reactions and emotional responses to my environment, societal issues, the challenges of parenting, managing anxiety and building resilience. Things are going well so far 🤞

I always thought I'm weird and a little mad because the "traditional" art did not really attract me however I admire their work and as an newby I copy many photos/artworks but it's not feeling true to myself, I feel lonely. A truly beautiful and helpful video. Having listened to many artists try to explain their process and intention over the last 50 years, your presentation is extremely down-to-earth and insightful - a tricky thing to achieve in my opinion because it's about the process of engaging deep levels of abstraction within the artist in order to render an abstract image in a physical form, a painting. You hit all the major points in a very clear way. I love your emphasis on the fundamental skills that are always needed: use of color, value, and composition. Well done!

This has been one of those questions I've had which has got overridden by other artistic concerns I'm dealing with - so I've never asked just what that statement means. Thank you! This makes a huge difference because I realise I haven't been at all clear with myself about what my "point of view" for my painting is. Just want to put paint on the canvas! But I have started to question myself straight away, and It's coming to me, and I know I can dig deeper and discover more about what motivates my painting. I'm doing CVP for the first time at the moment - it may have been explained there but if so I missed it. So grateful!

It does irk me a liitle when people say abstract art is easy or a cop out way to paint, neither are true,I came to abstraction over a period of time and now work soley as an abstract painter both traditionally and digitally and it actually feels totally natural to me to paint in this way. I used to be a large scale figure painter and would struggle for ideas or get artist's block, but since becoming an abstract painter I never struggle or get lost for ideas. I found it really frees up my mark making, how I see and work with colour even what I use to apply the paint. It's also enhanced by having the condition Synesthesia, which is when the senses get mixed up and work in tandem, it affects people different ways, for me I can see sound and hear colours, and it's really triggered by listening to music, certain pitches or notes really sets it off. Kandinsky had the condition too and you can see it in his work. I found working in abstract forms is really uplifting, be it as a final painting or working in my sketchbooks. I think it's also a more intuitive/instinctive way to paint, and for me to has a lyrical element to it. I find it really engages my creativity fully when I'm working on a painting.I feel a 'good' abstarct painting is when all the elements speak as a collective whole, the colours, the textures, the forms etc and the ideas that inspired it feels like it's been fully realised.I find looking at the work of other abstract painters it's the sense
of depth to their art work that always draws ,me in and you can get a sense of a moment or gesture captured, for me thats a 'good' abstract painting, when it moves me as I'm looking at it and trying to get a sense of connection with the artist that
created it,but also how that painting connects to me as well. It's so refreshing to hear your take on the idea of a 'good' abstract painting and it struck a chord with me too.

thank you so much! it makes so much sense... and yet it's so difficult to achieve, but I finally really understood what wasn't working for me. Not sure if I will ever manage to make it work, but this was so so helpful

Great video, took me 7 years of thinking and Soul searching to understand abstract art .

Thanks, Louise. Now I know why I was feeling so “at sea”. You’ve given me an anchor and a course to plot. I guess I won’t give it up after all.

I've started abstract painting relatively recent 5 years ago. At the beginning of my art journey, I was trying to express emotions and feelings, I was drawing and painting, mostly symbolism and surrealism.I was wrong.I rediscovered abstract. It's hard especially I'm mostly in "non-intellectual" abstract.Thank you for your video 😊

I love this video! Thank you. It really IS so difficult AND rewarding, Thank goodness (otherwise I'd get bored). Its a science, this abstract thing. And it transforms reality.

I'm sad to say that I was one of those people who said that throw paint on a canvas and Bob's your uncle! ... I didn't even understand it , I didn't see the beauty in it now I see it and I love it , and I so desperately want to be able to create even 1% of the beauty that you have, your just incredible , thank you so much

Wow. Your work is sooooo beautiful! It definitely resonates with me. Whether I have the SAME feeling or not, who's to say? This video has inspired me thought. I get frustrated to the point where I'm afraid to share my work, but people usually love it. I'm going to look into a workshop myself. Hopefully one by the same artist that helped you. I think I have what it takes, and knowing someone as talented as yourself once felt the struggle helps. 🤭 Isn't it weird how much that helps? Lol

Thank you so much! I live n Ireland and it is its landscape and coastline that I love and inspire me, however when I tried to put in onto the canvas, it doesn't do any go for me, t lacks something. I know now, what it is: how I experience it.

An aha moment for me, at last! At 63 I thought I was just too old to learn anything, although, I know that's not true. Everytime, I tried to paint and ended up with a big mess, I felt like such a failure and it affected me so much emotionally . That's how I knew that this is something that I was meant to do . Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Louise, this is EXACTLY the video I needed to watch. Everything you said resonated with me. I have been painting almost nonstop at home during the pandemic and Ive gotten to the point where my heart wants to move into abstraction and I’ve been terrified. It IS hard! It’s not just dobs of paint! Thank you for your reassurance and wisdom. Too bad it’s June and it’s too late for the workshop you mentioned, but I will seek the artist out! Definitely subscribed, will watch your vids ❤️
