Claire Forlani is so beautiful.
Dangerously beautiful. She actually could make you stop in the middle of the street.
She was my ultra-crush when I was a kid.
@@Stogie2112you arent wrong. Elegant, consistent, confident beauty!
@@Cherokeelion …. It’s an uncomfortable feeling when you see a woman so beautiful that you stop what you’re doing and just gaze at her, mouth agape, and unable to move. You’re totally vulnerable. 😫😫
She could squint you right into a pedestrian nightmare
"kid sister" means a person's younger sister.
It's hard to find any cinematic experience quite like this, truly a unique and beautiful journey.
Yeah for sure!
It’s a little bit like an inversion/subversion of The Christmas Carol, with a man at the top but with flaws being visited by other worldly force for life introspection and personal/communal growth…
Of course in this case the main character dies , but he leaves calm and content with having renewed the vigor of his life’s work business and the happiness of the relationships of his family.
But obviously that’s a bare bones comparison, and Meet Joe Black is a great original story!
That's been one of my favorite movies since I first saw it back when it came out. Many people feels it's too slow and boring, but I LOOOOVE it! Modern remake of "Death Takes A Vacation" with wonderful production and great actors! Glad you liked it!!!
“Death Takes A Holiday”
I love it too and I don’t know a single other person that likes it.
@@emilywilhite5807 Well, pretty much everyone else in these comments - me included. It's a wonderful movie.
I do think it's too slow but I still like it despite that.
What's funny to me is how back when this movie would be put on TV, they'd cut out most of the scenes relating to Bill's business, which actually made the movie way less interesting and in a sense "slower" than just playing the whole movie! ...Between the writing and the acting, the interesting use of film/lighting, and the incredible music, there's something quite unique and moving about this movie that I can't say I've really seen anywhere else. Definitely a favorite!
This movie is based on an Italian play from the 1920s called La Morte In Vacanza. It was later made into a movie called Death Takes A Holiday. Which was later remade into Meet Joe Black. Death Takes A Holiday was turned into an Off Broadway musical in 2011.
Terry Pratchett also wrote a Discworld novel about Death "quitting" his job to go live with humans for a while: Reaper Man.
I love the scenes with the old lady in the hospital. Makes me tear up every time.
I laughed out loud when you said you were ready for a romantic comedy, then he gets hit by the cars. Noooooo😅😅😅
So true, it actually is a romantic tragedy with kind of a happy end. What in itself would normally be a concept not to work - but in this gem it does.
Mary, I remember seeing this in the theater when it first came out.
The car accident scene - 😳
The screen went dark for several seconds and you could hear a pin drop in the theater. Finally someone said: “What in the actual f@!k?!” and the entire audience burst out laughing.
We were all as stunned as you were.
You need to watch "Legends of the Fall (1994)" Pitt & Hopkins first film together you won't regret it.
whaaat!! SUPER underrated! I think you'll LOVE this..great surprise! cant wait!
I love looking at this movie. The scale and then how the movie is filmed makes me feel like I am watching this movie in an opera or those huge cinemas in big cities.
SOMEWHERE IN TIME and this film are my 2 favorite love stories. Both are very similar. If you haven't seen it, definitely add it to your polls.
I second this recommendation. Somewhere in Time is a beautiful movie!
17:50 "Earth to Joe"
Sshhh... too busy being kissed by Claire Forlani. 😂😂😂
But sincerely, Mary, I just loved seeing you all gushy throughout this watchalong, and quite surprisingly listening to you go on about your own relationship, that alone made this posting quite amazing and wonderful! So, thank you for that.
Long-story-short... I really hope to see more of what we just watched on your channel every once in a while; nothing wrong with some heartwarming beauties every so often: Moonstruck, Baby Boom (how timely, lol), Four Weddings & A Funeral, Thomas Crown Affair (1999), Fly Away Home, Fabulous Baker Brothers, 84 Charring Cross, The Lake House...
Four Weddings and a Funeral would be an amazing reaction
This movie came about at a time in my life, when I needed it most. It is beautiful, witty, and it was a complete game changing moment for me. Love who loves you back, and be forever happy. Fear death, but challenge it, and do not be afraid, because confidence and knowing yourself and being honest is what life is all about. That is the big secret to life
Well phrased
I absolutely LOVE this movie! Cry like a baby every time. So glad you liked it!
This was absolutely my favorite movie in high school. There is something so unique about it and, like you said, serene. I got the soundtrack for my 16th birthday (the first of many!) because I loved it *so* much and to this day it remains one of my favorite scores. The script _is_ somewhat indulgent, but the way everything was implemented made it, in my opinion, such a work of art that I don't even care, haha. I also love the characters; how flawed but sweet Bill's relationship is with his family, how the woman in the hospital interacts with Joe, and even thinking about a person's legacy -- Bill's primarily, but also his beloved wife. It all matters and it's what makes life so rich!
Lovely reaction, Mary. Thank you for sharing!
Always love seeing reactions to this it's often overlooked
❤❤You said the concept is so crazy but it feels so serene. That really describes it so well❤❤
This movie invented the meet cute. That SMILE just melts you
Love this movie. Great reation.
this movie is a gem, not many knows about it. but Im sure most people will love it :D
The cinematography is so good in the movie
Mary, another great Brad Pitt film is "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" (with Cate Blanchett). It's an epic tale about a man who was born very old and grows younger instead of older. It's like a more somber version of Forrest Gump. GREAT story.
Aaagh! His poor mother!
Absolutely beautiful movie. I have lost count how many times I've watched this. At this point it's class as a classic to me.
Fantastic script, great casting, and very underrated score.
Thanks, Mary! 🖤 I was so glad to see this one at the cinema... the trailer for THE PHANTOM MENACE played before it. #MoviesWithMary #MartinBrest #MeetJoeBlack
He took some of the old ladies pain away in the hospital. But not all of it.
One of my Favorite movies. You need to watch carefully, there so many chances to see isolated moments that can be missed.
This is in my top 10. The acting is incredible. The concept is very interesting and the film takes you through every emotion. I love a reason to rewatch this.
One of my favorite movies of all time :)
Such a great movie. Another underrated Anthony Hopkins movie is FRACTURE with Ryan Gosling. It’s a legal thriller.
I love this movie. It moves me to tears every time I watch it. Another great - similarly moving - movie you should see is City of Angels.
absolutely LOVE City of Angels ... the calm quiet sensitivity moves me every time
Kid sister = baby sister = younger sister 😉
One of my favorites. Please try “The Adjustment Bureau”. I promise you‘lol love it.
i first watched this movie when i was, like, 9-10, which was 17 years ago and kept rewatching it almost every time i saw it on TV. and only recently i realised that it's THREE HOURS long!! time passes so fast with this film and i think it speaks volumes about how great it is.
This is on my top 10 list. Good job!!
I'm so glad you reacted to this movie. I just love it so much.
"Death is your friend. When you're tired death will say, 'I understand'" is a line in LACKAWANA BLUES, (one of my favorite movies).
Forgot about Lackawanna Blues. That's a good one.
I enjoy the actress Claire Forlani. She is also great in the comedy Mallrats with Shannen Doherty.
absolutely LOVE this movie.... so happy to share your reaction.. know editing a longer movie like this hard but would have loved t see Joe's "first time"... can tell from the clips you did use how much you liked it and understood what was important points.. happy you are in a good relationship and looking forward to seeing your baby ... other good movies to consider are Swept from the Sea and on Netflix The Age of Adeline
For some reason this movie is always a part of a tv ensemble during christmas/new year's eve here, together with Grinch and stuff. So even if there is nothing christmas-y about it, I always get a christmas mood just by watching it lol. 🎄
6:50 A good bibliophile always has unread books in their library.
Mary: I feel I haven't watched a romantic movie in such a long time.
Me: Wait for it
Now Mary has a better idea of why every girl and her dog were head over heels for Brad Pitt in the 90s.
And pony.
The hospital scene still gives me the chills...when she saw right through the cover
Loved this reaction❤ I was worried that youd be spooked by the car wreck part, it spooked me really bad when I saw it. Its a really unique concept!
Typically, a kid brother or kid sister refers to a sibling several years younger. There is usually a big age gap between older and younger children in a family.
"Kid sister/brother" is a regional turn of phrase that just refers to a younger sibling, especially one that's quite a bit younger. One that may have still been a little kid while the older sibling was a teenager or something. It's like a mom calling her son her "baby boy" even once he's grown. A term of endearment.
LOVE this film! And, it made me realize what an incredible actor Brad Pitt was!
Even though Im obsessed with films, somehow I had never seen this one until recently. My wonderful husband remembered he liked it so he had me watch it with him. I LOVE it. Its a new favorite of mine. I have already seen it several times to process it and make sure I didn’t miss anything. The scene with Joe letting Susan know (in his own way) what he is and not who she thought, you can literally see the shape of him in her pupil. Such a stunning effect. She knows he is some other worldly force.
The scene where he bounces off both cars 😂😂😂
One of my top 5 fave movies of all time.
@3:53 "kid sister" is just English slang for my little sister or "my sister who is younger than me."
@10:20 Peanut butter and Nutella. As an American I lived in Paris for just under five years. Everyone in the US has peanut butter in their pantry. Everyone in France had Nutella in their pantry. I had so many French people tell me they really disliked peanut butter. While I didn't dislike Nutella I couldn't imagine eating it as often as I did peanut butter. We have peanut butter candy, ice creme, milk-shakes, pancakes, sandwiches, etc etc. So funny what we all become acclimatized to.
This movie was so unique when it first came out. I loved it. Thank you Mary!
cannot have peanut butter cookies without peanut butter...lol
The original play this is based on is called “Death takes a holiday“ it’s been made into several different movies
Starman with Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen
Amazing film! I wish reactors would discover it .
The hospital scene is one of my favorites
You need to see the "Before Sunrise" trilogy if you haven't seen it yet. I want to see your reaction to the best romantic movies ever.
Another great Thomas Newman score in this. Mary if you like that vibe, search for movies he's scored. Or just listen to his work. Some of the most beautiful music you'll hear in this life. Chills.
Anthony hopkins in the novie "the rite" is one of my favorites
This is a remake of the 1934 film Death Takes a Holiday.
Your comment about peanut butter. Once while visiting a German family, they presented me with all the American dollars that they had stashed away, and asked me to get them peanut butter. Just peanut butter. I remember I bought 4 pints for them. They were thrilled. One of the teenagers ate a whole jar in one sitting.
This movie has some beautiful music & moments. ❤
Thank you, Mary.
0:29 You've also seen Anthony Hopkins as Thor's father, Odin, in the MCU films.
If you enjoyed this, I think you’d like City of Angels.
Anthony Hopkins plays in this amazing movie also, it's titled The Edge.
As I have said before, I enjoy your reactions and wish you the very best with them. I am presently watching a "before your time" British legal series called "Rumpole of the Bailey" on Brit Box. I saw it as a younger lad and loved it. My second watching is just as enjoyable as the first. It is a wonderful courtroom/legal comic/drama starring Leo McKern. Mr. McKern is superb in the role of Rumpole. The show is beautifully written - great for the mind and the spirit. I hope you will enjoy it on your own, sometime in the future, as I know you like films to do with the courtroom. All the Best - Kenton Couch
Yea Anthony Hopkins was barely noticeable in all those Thor movies 😂
Great reaction, _as usual._ This is one of my favorite films.
I also recommend *_Silverado_* (1985). A *fun* western with _Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, John Cleese, Kevin Costner, Jeff Goldblum,_ and more.
Since we're on the subject...
● *_The Fisher King_* (1991) Dir. by Terry Gilliam, with _Robin Williams_ & _Jeff Bridges._
● *Spy Game* (2001) with *Brad Pitt* and *Robert Redford.*
● *The Mexican* (2001), starring _Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts_ and _James Gandolfini._
● *_Inside Man_* (2006) _Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster_ and _Clive Owen._ (A Spike Lee joint)
Silverado, Spy Game, Inside Man. 👍 Top tier.
Thanks @@BDogg2023! As I'm not likely to have my recommendations seen, the backup is always appreciated. 🤸🏼♂️
*EDIT:* _"seen"_ as in watched/reacted to. I know she scans the comments a bit, so _the comment_ may indeed be seen. 😏🤷🏼♂️
I saw this with my girl in the theater back then, and remember she punched me in the arm when I burst out laughing when Brad Pitt got pinballed in traffic.
Kind of like when your girlfriend gets that wry smile on he face when the slutty girl with the big you know whats gets taken out in the slasher flick.
Otimo react Mary, realmente esse é um lindo filme!
Abraços amigos do Brasil 🌹🙏🤗
I love this movie, it’s so underrated!
This film is a remake/retelling of the 1934 film "Death Takes a Holiday," starring Fredric March. Another film with a similar theme is "On Borrowed Time, " starring Lionel Barrymore . If you have time, watch both films.
Can we all take a moment to appreciate Mary's Christmas jumper. Sweater if you are a yank. A Christmas jumper.....in September.
Does it get any more awesome than that?
One of my very favorite films of all time.
(And Laura Scudder’s is bay far the best peanut butter. Only lunatics put it in the fridge, run from those people! Lol)
Since you tried that one,
I highly suggest
“Lost In Translation”
Which I think is Bill Murray’s finest work.
I would call it Romance, Drama, Comedy , set in Japan
You’ll love it.
It’s my daughters favorite
from all the reactions of You, i watched until now, this was the most emotional i have seen...it was beautyful to see how much You enjoyed this Gem....
if you like the overall tone of this movie, if you candlive without the supernatural part of this one, i would recommend this two Nacy Meyers movies: The Intern and The holliday. both outstanding masterpieces, without the need of over the top happenings.... Like Meed Joe Black, they are just soothing to the soul to watch.....
I compliment peoples names all the time, if I do genuinely enjoy the sound of it. The is one lady, a voice actor of some skill, who I cant wait to meet, so i can tell her how beautiful her name is: Moujan Zolfaghari. I know it looks odd in print, but the sound of it spoken is somehow magical.
MARY would like to watch Anthony Hopkins in *THE EDGE* (1997) opposite Alec Baldwin. Hopkins plays an aging tycoon just like in Meet Joe Black.
I love the way you laugh.
This is one of those movies that I've always laughed at the concept of letting the story play out for like half an hour or something more. That would be incredibly awkward, finding dad's corpse in the grass and Brad Pitt's character not knowing how she could tell him that her dad was dead with such a lovely face, when he just had past away moments before finding each other again. 😆
I literally discovered peanut butter (at age 18) from this movie.
Jamaican isn't just an accent. It's a dialect of English. It's kind of a language of it's own. Jamaican is to English as Italian is to Spanish.
This is a remake of the classic movie Death Takes A Holiday (1934). I like movies with unconventional/weird ideas, and this has an interesting idea for a romantic story. Anthony Hopkins is very likeable here, his relationship with Susan is really sweet.
Your audio is drastically louder than the film audio. You may wish to equalize them a bit in the future.
"Thank you for loving me."
I think this is a modern remake of an old, old movie, titled "Death Takes A Holiday."
Kid sister, his little sister 👍
Watch Shadowlands with Hopkins, you'll like it.
Fantastic movie 👍
I feel genuine sorrow for people that live in places without peanut butter.
This movie is based on Death Takes A Holiday.
"Kid sister" is a sister who's younger than him. Same for "kid brother".
im not religious or anything but i always love shows/games/franchises that show Death as a genuinely decent being that is just doing its job, not an evil or terrifying horror, just some thing that knows what it has to do
I'm a big fan of this film. So beautiful made. Interesting perspective.
There are two 1930s films with storylines in the same vein "Death Takes a Holiday" and "On Borrowed Time".
1939's "On Borrowed Time" stars Lionel Barrymore, who played the villain in 1946's "It's A Wonderful Life". Barrymore is legitimately wheelchair-bound in both films due to his real life infirmity, but are polar opposite characters. The film is based on an ancient Greek story.
1934's "Death Takes a Holiday" is a lot closer to "Meet Joe Black" in its story; "Meet Joe Black is based on "Death Takes a Holiday", which in turn was based on a 1924 play "La Morte in vacanza" by Alberto Casella. Death takes human form to understand why humans cling to life. He is first very attractive to women, but at a point in the relationship they feel something disturbing about him and leave. Until he meets a beautiful woman who does not. Her father learns who he really is and works to break them up.
I was surprised you didn't show the scene where the girl begins to understand who he is. I thought that was a very important and interesting scene, very well acted. No comment about the background music? I found some of the score to be unbelievably beautiful ... on a level with Beethoven and Mozart for God's sake.
"kid sister" = Younger sister.
If you are in Manchester? Ar' kid. = My sibling
Oasis. "Round ar way " = In the immediate vicinity of where I grew up.
Great movie!
Amazing movie! ❤
I think grim reaper there felt that if he couldn’t have her for himself, he’d let her have the guy she met at the coffee shop as a selfless gesture of his love for Susan
A LOVELY MOIE AND A LOVELY REACTION
