LOVE this film! Beautiful, spiritual, & filled with heartbreak & hope. It's also the movie that made me realize that Brad was one of the most brilliant & under-rated actors in the industry. Yes, he's a pretty boy but his acting talent is incredible!
Very few special effects (the car crash at the beginning), no exotic locations, just actors acting their hearts out with a simple plot and a clear script. There's a lot of heart to it.
A big thank you to Heidi for choosing this beautiful gem! Loved you two experiencing this one. I would love for you to get around to Brad's Benjamin Button one day.
Thanks to you both for reacting to this overlooked and sometimes ridiculed movie. I have wathed it and loved it so many times I can't keep track. I love that you liked it.
sometimes ridiculed? how? this movie was amazing! amazing cast and you get to enjoy throughout the movie! We watched so many films now and trust me this movie is one of the good ones!
Y'all are absolutely the best! I liked this movie...OK, sort of...the first time I saw it. Watching it with the two of you made it lots and lots better! Thanks! God bless you!
A favorite of mine! The romance (actually, both of them) are so sweet! Brad Pitt does a fantastic job with both characters he plays, depicting the charm of the man in the coffee shop and then the humorous awkwardness of Death experiencing life. Anthony Hopkins is also so compelling, and the actress who plays Susan expresses everything with just her facial expressions! The ending is both sad and hopeful, especially as Susan realizes her father has died and that the young man who comes back to her is the one she first met, not Death. Death ends up realizing that love isn't selfish, so he lets her live and also returns the young man to her that he had taken so he could feel what life was like. I love when Anthony Hopkins asks if he should be afraid, and Death says, "Not a man like you." Even Death recognized Bill Parrish was a good man.
Excellent pick of what I think is an under appreciated film. So unique, very engaging script with an excellent cast. Next opportunity try “Legends of the Fall” with both Anthony Hopkins & Brad Pitt….another great film.
This movie has always been in my top 5 of most under-rated or under-appreciated movies. The movie script was well written, and the performances by the actors and actresses were top notch. Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt rarely disappoint.
This film is a remake of the original 1934 film "Death Takes a Holiday" starring Fredric March and Guy Standing. Another film with a similar theme is "On Borrowed Time, "(1939) starring Lionel Barrymore and Cedric Hardwicke. Lionel is the great uncle of actress Drew Barrymore . Another film with Death as a feature character is "Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941) starring Robert Montgomery and Claude Rains. The remake of this film is "Heaven Can Wait" (1978) starring Warren Beatty, Jack Warden, James Mason, Dyan Cannon, Julie Christie, and Buck Henry.
"Here Comes Mr. Jordan" is better than the remake. Lloyd Bridges also has a small uncredited part in it. I'm partial to originals though. I think every remake of "Pygmalion" (1938) has been disappointing, perhaps because the original author, George Bernard Shaw, wrote the adaptation of the play for the 1938 film and he retained constant personal supervision of the adaptation.
You hit on it right away. While he's there DEATH is not out doing his job. Nobody's dying, well, with one exception. Oh...two! He certainly can't retire. He'll have to go back to work. Loosely based on a play called Death Takes a Holiday which was made into a movie by the same name I believe starring Frederic March. What a musical score this has! "A Whisper of a Thrill", by Thomas Newman. It's thrilling and chilling all at once. Kinda like falling in love with DEATH! "Don't Fear the Reaper"!
I absolutely love this movie. It always make me cry. The emotions that are portrayed by the actors is just so moving that I can't help but get emotional. I thought Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt were perfect. Very moving performances.
…on Marian’s comments on love; I heard a pastor describe it from a Biblical perspective: “love is a verb, it’s giving to someone that which they need, when they deserve it least but when they need it the most. It takes work, a dedication & a concentrated effort. It’s not all roses & rainbows.”
If you'll pardon the pun, it is always a joy watching you react! 😀 There is a classic film called _Death Takes a Holiday_ (1934) and other remakes. I think Marian is making good points about love, but IMO he was taking the wrong message from what Bill Parrish was getting at. Bill was not speaking only of the initial _getting to know you_ stage. But rather *the whole of the relationship.* I married young, and discovered, over time, there was no passion there. Years after my divorce lightning truly did strike. And for as long as we were together, there was passion and so much joy. It has now been 20 years since she has passed away. But not a day goes by I don't miss her. I may be an agnostic, but I do hope to see her again. How I miss her.¹ *EDIT:* 35:52 As for telling the truth… of course honesty has its merits. But one must also weigh the feelings of the other person. The one you love. Is it worth telling _this little petty truth_ if it is going to hurt the one you love? I say _no._ ··•●✺●•·· ¹ ─ I have a daughter from my first marriage, and my love for her has kept me going. I'm glad my daughter got to know my Love and saw what we meant to each other, before her passing. I hope my daughter (who is 35 now) carries that example with her and also experiences the lightning strike. ⚡
Marcia Gay Harden & Jeffrey Tambor made such a cute couple - I have always loved their acting. I also love Brad Pitt & Anthony Hopkins. I love this movie though I am not a fan of Susan Forlani because in my opinion she over acts particularly with the facial expressions but it does not spoil the movie, it just makes me usually avoid her movies. Jake Weber was SUCH a weasel in this movie and he plays that role too well - makes you wonder is he really a super nice guy in real life or a weasel. Did you notice that when Joe Black is in the coffee shop, at the phone, the phone partition is made of a glass that distorts what you see through it - and then when he visits Mr Parish he shows up behind a glass wall that distorts his image - that was cleaver. But I always wonder, how did the real Joe die that terrible death in that suit and Joe Black shows up in it all pressed and in perfect condition LOL.
Marion my dude.....he literally explains in the beginning that he is death and is using brad pitts body after he died. Why were you not understanding that my friend, she was spot on when she was trying to tell you that and its clearlg explained in the movie lol
Many Star Wars fans of a certain age bought tickets to this as they were guaranteed to see the first teaser trailer to The Phantom Menace, the first new Star Wars on screen since Return of the Jedi.
I've always wanted to see the conversation between Claire Forlani's character and her sister when she introduces the man they know as Joe Black...that is no longer Joe Black.
I loved this film when i was a teenager, but opened for myself that the older i become, the less like it, so now for me even its IMDB mark seems to high.
An amazing movie, cast, and well written story... all completely ruined by one of the most disappointed trash endings every conceived by hollywood. sad. could've been a masterpiece
I'm glad y'all did this one, a totally underrated film if you ask me.
I love this film - Clare and Brad have SO much chemistry! ❤
9:50 That’s right! This film is a remake of _Death Takes a Holiday_ (1934).
LOVE this film! Beautiful, spiritual, & filled with heartbreak & hope. It's also the movie that made me realize that Brad was one of the most brilliant & under-rated actors in the industry. Yes, he's a pretty boy but his acting talent is incredible!
Stellar casting. '98 was a great vintage for cinema.
The Jamaican lady always breaks my heart
Yes me too!😊
If you consider that the original title of this story is "Death take a Holiday", then things make sense sooner. The story is from the 1920s & 1930s.
"Lightning could strike"
Great movie. Anthony Hopkins was awesome in Amistad too.
Very few special effects (the car crash at the beginning), no exotic locations, just actors acting their hearts out with a simple plot and a clear script. There's a lot of heart to it.

*Legends of the Fall* (1994) next. Also with Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins! Must watch next.
Yes
YES! Legends of the Fall is another one of my favorite movies of all time. Terrific suggestion.
A River Runs Through the Legends of the Fall ;p
I love this movie.. it has a special place in my heart
wow.. that's amazing!
7:20 She’s 100 % spot on 😁 Catch up man
😝 thank you
"Should I be afraid?"
"Not a man like you"
Y'all are absolutely the best! I liked this movie...OK, sort of...the first time I saw it. Watching it with the two of you made it lots and lots better! Thanks! God bless you!
This was chilling in the theater, last show of the night and only person there.

You guys will LOVE The Talented Mr. Ripley. Matt Damon, Jude Law, GwynethPaltrow, Cate Blanchett. Thriller, shocks, surprises, twists, turns. Epic!
"Death is coming".... Man that pun. Lol

I had no idea, I'll have to check out these classics!

...the only Warren Beatty film I liked!
The movie Death takes a holiday is based on the 1924 play La morta in vacanza by Alberto casella
Potatoes are always potatoes lol

"Don't Fear the Reaper"!
Susan, "I like the way you smell too" -- MJoy, "what, smells like death?" LOL
One of the top ten movies.
The absolute best movie in many many years! Way under rated. Brad Pitt owned that role so perfectly!
Great analisis ! Congrats
IRS agents use cover names when operating on active investigations cases so the Joe Black name makes sense for when Drew returns in his old body.
okay! that sounds logical. I wish we knew the guy's real name though
Death takes a holiday is the original movie years ago.
I absolutely love this movie. It always make me cry. The emotions that are portrayed by the actors is just so moving that I can't help but get emotional. I thought Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt were perfect. Very moving performances.
Anthony Hopkins performance here was perfect!
Oh my, the thumbnail photo is giving uncanny valley...
Squirrel of Death!

wow! that is true!
Thanks for the reaction. Not enough people have reacted to this gem. Back when Brad Pitt actually chose roles that involves acting and storyline.
Interesting is: from the lot Brad Pitt fans one of his greatest movie never appears: 7 years in Tibet.
If you'll pardon the pun, it is always a joy watching you react! 😀

The Angel of Death can only do what God demands. It is his job. Justice prevailed with the 1st guy being brought to life.
Check out _Scent of a Woman_ (1992), by the same director.
they were of the same director! we reacted to Scent of a Woman!

oh wow! and did they get to see the teaser trailer?
@@MJoy4Fun We did. And we’re shortly able to then download a QuickTime video that took an hour to download.
This movie is long, slow and grandiose...but it's really good. Unique.
I wonder if Heidi likes the movie ..or Brad Pitt in this movie. LoL
I've always wanted to see the conversation between Claire Forlani's character and her sister when she introduces the man they know as Joe Black...that is no longer Joe Black.

oh Heidi loves this movie! 😁
✌️❤️❤️!...
Wow a good point you made was her death. Like imagine when she dies as an old lady or whatever.
exactly right? Death will do anything to cheat her time. That will be a great sequel 😅

Question if she got pregnant would the child be deaths kid or his 😊
Hi -Dee
thank you for the correction!
Great movie but every time I see out get run over in beginning I think Angelina ran his ass over for cheating 😅😅 I can't help it
