    I avoided this movie for almost a decade because I thought it was gonna be a chick flick…………………I have never been more wrong in my life. My dad made me watch it back in the day ……….and it is absolutely one of the greatest films ever made.
    Tristan was a rock that everyone broke apart on.

      I never wanted to watch the movie because I’m not a huge Brad Pitt fan but my mom kept begging me over the years to show me. I thought it was just cuz Brad Pitt is her celebrity crush and that he’s so hot in this movie. Eventually I finally gave in to watch it. I admit it was a really good movie. It was too sad for me though like I can’t handle sad movies (I mean with sad endings specifically, cuz I like sad movies that have a happy ending at least). I did predict a lot of it correctly until Isabelle died and then all my next theories went down the drain. Lol

    So some insight to Tristan cutting the brothers heart.
    Some native american tribes believe that when a warrior dies, cutting out his heart will release his warrior spirit.
    Being that Tristan was taught the native way by One Stab, this is what he knows.

  • @whereisCarmenSandiego
    @whereisCarmenSandiego Год назад +47

    She’s right about Suzannah’s hair. Native American women cut their hair when they lose a child (some tribes cut it when a close loved one dies, not just a child) and they bury the hair with the dead, and then regrow it as normal. Many ancient civilizations use the cutting of hair as symbolism. I think she cut her hair before killing herself as a way to let go of the pain that loving Tristan cost her throughput her life.

    The mother's affluent family was from Boston, and Samuel lived with her while attending Harvard. Susanna's family had all died, leaving her an orphan, and Sam's mother played a part in arranging for them to get together. And given the time period, she would definitely have felt like she had no options when Samuel died.
    She turned out to be the opposite of their mother, because when she was brought to Montana, she took to ranch life immediately.. She was naturally an ideal match for Tristsn, but he had his ptsd / guilt to deal with, and abandoned her at his father's house.

    Imo, the unraveling of the brothers began with Samuel's belief that HE alone could make a difference in the war. Abandoning a new bride for service was selfish. Don't blame Susanna for her beauty and indecisiveness. Samuel risked his brothers lives, and was naive to his special impact on the entire family. Amazing acting.

    the title Legends of the Fall is in reference to the biblical "fall from grace". and as we see everyone does in their own way.
    the Colonel developed a deep respect for the native Americans and their plight. One Was a scout hired by the Army who ended up as a close friend and confidant to the Colonel. Pet, Decker's wife was One Stab's sister and Decker was one of the Colonel's soldiers. they all came to Montana to "Escape the madness over the mountains". meaning both the Indian wars, oppressive government and the way of life back east. at this time native Americans were still being forced on to reservations and we're not considered citizens. so the relationship with the Ludlow family was very remarkable and unusual.
    as Tristen stated the Colonel and his wife Isobel "loved the idea of each other" more than they were "in love". a relationship echoed by Samuel and Susanna.
    Tristen was heavily influenced by One Stab in many way raised in the way of the Lakota indians. that's why he was so much more free spirited and wild than his brothers. when he touched the bear it was not a suicide attempt or death wish, it was a way of "counting coup" many native American tribes practiced counting coup, the simplest explanation of which is that encountering an ement and touching him with hand or a coup stick showed even more bravery than actually engaging the enemy with weapons. you don't fear the enemy or his weapons so much that you walk up and touch him and walk away unharmed....big balls!
    the relationships seem strange by modern standards but at the time marrying a brother's widow was pretty common. keep in mind they were in a very isolated, rugged part of the country. and enter into this an attractive woman. of course they are all enamored of her. and she being an orphan wanted the family connection, and loved Samuel but was just overwhelmed by the magnetism of Tristen and his way of life. as Hannah and you picked up on, there were underlying tensions between the brothers and the Colonel...add Susanna into the mix and those were all brought to the surface.
    Tristen of course was suffering with severe PTSD after the war and Samuel's death. and Susanna was a reminder. he could never find his peace with her. where as Isobel Two was essentially meant for him and waiting all her life on him...so it was so very tragic to lose her. Susanna's death was sad, particularly for Alfred, but looking back was almost inevitable.
    the redemption of Alfred and the family bonding was one of the best movie endings ever!
    so in the end the all fell from grace but they were all also Legends. especially Tristen.
    this is my all time favorite movie. I really enjoyed seeing your reaction, almost like seeing it new for me even though I've watched it many times. thanks for including it

    • @travismorris9303
      @travismorris9303 2 года назад +2

      You're right Cree, and I knew that, not sure why my brain went to Lakota but it did. I have a nephew named Tristen so I habitually missed the an vs en. I have read the novella but it was many many years ago and I don't remember the details of it as much. I didn't think it was as good as the movie, which is odd because I usually like the books more. In any case my comment is limited to the movie. I do think there is evidence that Decker was one of the Colonel's Troopers though. It specifically shows he was on the run from the law, or at least the O'Bannon brothers version of the law. But it makes sense that he'd go to his old commander and wife's brother to escape. I don't remember what or if the novella says about this, but I think it's heavily implied in the film.
      Speaking of the novella, another Jim Harrison novella is Revenge. It's also been made into a pretty decent movie

    Many of the Native tribes believed in funerary rituals involving the hearts of their loved ones. In this movie, the intent was to free Samuel's spirit, so he could move on in the afterlife. The same is true of several ancient European cultures, including Scandinavian and Germanic peoples.
    Native hunters also did the same thing with the hearts of animals they killed hunting. They saw it as a way to show respect for the animal's life and to thank it for its sacrifice so that the people could live.

    I think that like Ash, Susannah also blamed herself for this family’s destruction. She desired Tristan, and was punished with Samuel’s death. Then she betrayed Samuel with Tristan, and also didn’t wait for Tristan, married the other brother and is now punished with infertility. Then after she is jealous of Isabelle and their family, Isabelle gets killed. And, because of her, Tristan’s and the other brother’s relationship was irreparably damaged. I think she cut her hair out of shame, cutting this symbol of sex and beauty. She just wanted a family, but she feels like she imploded theirs. Such a tragic character.

    I love this film and find it so moving. Which is why I never thought I'd laugh so much over it during a reaction. Y'all are so entertaining! But that's not my point. My point is, you saw things I haven't seen through decades of watching this (Suzanna's hair as symbolism, the mom keeps going back and forth the same way Tristan does, etc) Wonderful reaction.

    I think it's interesting how Hannah point out pretty early on that each of the characters in this film are good-hearted and well-meaning, but often make foolish or morally wrong decisions due to circumstances beyond their control. She points out that she can understand the motivations for each person, even though she doesn't necessarily agree with their actions, But she somehow flips her opinion on Alfred when he tried to talk Tristan out of reacting rashly after Isabel's death. Hannah said that she could now say with absolute certainty that Alfred was wrong. But was he, really? As unpopular an opinion as it is, he was trying to be the voice of reason in a very emotionally turbulent time. He knows his brother. He knows that Tristan can be recklessly impulsive, and can make bad decisions when he's not thinking clearly, even if he has every reason for doing so. He's smart enough to know that if Tristan goes after the men responsible for his wife's death, the situation will only get worse. The O'Bannions obviously have the cops in their pocket, probably the judges as well, and I'm sure Alfred isn't the only politician they have in their pocket. Any retaliation against them will end poorly. By the end of the movie, Tristan ends up getting his revenge, but it costs him the life of peace he had wanted for himself when he is forced to go on the run. Alfred knew this, and tried to stop it. Like the rest of the film, I may not agree with the character's actions, but I do understand them.

    When it comes to the love triangle. You guys gotta understand the era. It wasn’t that uncommon that wives would get married to familiar family members. They were in the Wild West or the frontier. Selection for suitors or even good ones were limited.

    Our most basic instinct is not for survival, but for family. Most of us would give our own life for the survival of a family member, yet we lead our daily life too often as if we take our family for granted.
    Family quarrels have a total bitterness unmatched by others. Yet it sometimes happens that they also have a pleasantness beneath the unpleasantness, based on the understanding that this is not for keeps; that any limb you climb out on will still be there later for you to climb back.
    You don't choose your family. They are a gift to you, as you are to them.
