So good at creating textures and atmospheres. He really complements Les' playing in so many ways. BY far my favorite Primus drummer.
It should be: By FAR
The most underrated and under the radar drummer I can think of. A true talent.
There's a few but yeah, Tim is for sure under rated.
Tim's drumming always sounds fluid. It never sounds forced or stale.
It's funny, even though I only hear the drums...I still hear the entire band playing :D
Guess I am not alone.
Mara Gossep, No you're definitely NOT Alone. This dude is amazing and not because I share a first name with him either.. I love his style as so many others do. There are apparently 11 people that know little to nothing about drumming or have ever even touched a kit for that matter. If they have, they can post a Video of just how wonderful they are !! lol. To each, their own I suppose.
i could have swore he was amazing simply because his name is the same as yours.
Ur not alone I hear it too 👂
THANK GOD THE BOYS NOT ALONE
Oh yeah me too
Tim Alexander is the reason I started playing the drums 25 years ago.
He’s the reason I picked the sticks back up!
that broken stick flip at 7:45 is a work of art. not a note missed
Dang I didn't even notice that until you pointed it out lol. That was badass!
You understand he's a professional, right?
absolutely the most underateted drummer, he is in the top something of all time, beast
+rusaneme -- I wouldn't call him underrated. His is in the top 100 (usually in the top 20) drummer lists for all the publications that matter. He is highly rated by his peers (the folks that matter)
Naa he's underrated he should be one of the top 20 drummer lists
Tim Alexander, Danny carey, John stainer Mike fluff bordin. 4 beasts of the 90s. One of the great decades for drummers ever. Runner up, Josh freese & Brooks wackermen. What a treat these guys are.
@@MatChew75 don't forget the late Sean Reinert
@@MatChew75 and Jimmy chamberlin
This is the guy that made me want to be a drummer. Unbelievable control over his dynamics, like a human dimmer switch! His stuff is so busy and yet so clean. The way he feels time seems almost elliptical??? 🥁🔥😯
Actually couldn't put it into better words myself. Isn't this man a damn legend?
Eliptical?

I've listened/watched countless drum solos and Tim's kits are consistently the sharpest and crisp of them all! Primus only SUX with TIM "HERB" ALEXANDER!
The Dr. Seuss of Drumming! That’s what always comes to mind when I listen to Tim Alexander. Colorful, imaginative, poetic, unique…just totally off kilter yet so deliberate, precise and dynamic.
Hope those docs know what size of heart they're holding, Tim.
Tim Alexander is one of the few who amaze me. Real music.
I imagine Benny Greb hearing him, and smiling...
Was front row when Primus filled the Austin City Music Hall waaaayyy back in the day. All I remember was Tim's monster kit and his phenomenal playing. Those guys taught me how to appreciate real musicianship before I even knew what real musicianship was. Ended up seeing Primus live a total of 4 times in my life.
When i was 16, I lived near mingus mountain Jerome AZ. We would go to shows (Lingo) and all of us would stand in a semi circel around Tim's kit for the entire concert. Close enough that he could talk to us while he played. We would watch every note he played listen to his beats weave in and out of this wonderful music. The whole band was so inspiring. and Tim was one of us...but then again not. We all knew he was Neil Peart status, i mean we could feel it. We would also dance on the street in the winter time outside the spirit room. And fight for standing space beside the big plate glass window of the bar. SOme of us piled on the wooden bench so that we could watch the band, watch Tim groove. The window would fog up on the inside cuz there were so many people inside dancing and creating so much heat. Johnny Lingo would come over and wipe the for fromthe window so we could see Tim play. We were all in high school we couldnt go inside the bar. But we grew up listening to Tim play. He is a part of me, part of my friend circle and part of my childhood.
That's a very cool story. I have a special story about Tim as well. His drumming definitely touches a lot of people
Tim is one of my greatest drum influences. Awesome sound, creativity and personality.
His personality is kinda stale but he makes up for it with out of this world drumming
Same here!
One of the most creative drummers I’ve ever heard. I could listen to a solo albums of just all his drum parts by himself. Anyone who is a fan of his should check out his stuff with attention deficit. Just shows how technical he is
Also worth mentioning is his project Fata Morgana.
Farta Mogana
My fav song as a showcase for Herb's excellent drumming is Sgt Baker, specifically the ending. When I first heard it I knew he was something really special
Good god, the drum track to Eleven is so much more complex than I already thought it was... So damn good.
only 154 likes? WTF people?!?! Tim kills!! ELEVEN!! hell of a groove, love his bells, and accents and trashy hats above his bons. i remember seeing him live opening for RUSH back in the day, Primus Sucked!! danny carey reminds me of Tim.
Dorian Samaniego Eleven blew my mind
+Dorian Samaniego Danny Carey refers to Tim Alexander as one of his "influences and heros". That is quite the compliment!
i could listen to him 24/7
The double bass pattern at 14:27 excites me in ways i don't understand.
Yes it was!!!!
I like how he doesn't do that lazy "bicycling" thing that a lot drummers do (playing straight 16ths all the way through with no variation).
He actually creates rhythms using the double pedal.
Always love all the splashes, bells, and SFX cymbals he uses and the subtle hit combinations. Such a great drummer.
What a great drummer is Tim Alexander, an excepcional talent.
Great drummer and very underrated.
One of the first dudes that really got me into playing. The sounds he pulls out of a kit smacked me in the back of the head as a kid.
Wow! So many hours spent enjoying and analyzing this guy. I was still in high school when Frizzle Fry, Suck On This, and Sailing the Seas of Cheese came out. I remember one of my fellow drummer friends saying that Tim Alexander was like a hard core version of Neil Peart. I thought that was a good description, although Mr. Peart is pretty hard core himself.
I love the extra "flare" and notes he adds to the songs - truly an innovative master of technicality and musicality. Primus sux!
Tim herb alexander is Very influential on my life.....very few drummers influence me like he has. Ya know bill bruford Stewart Copeland Bill ward Narada Michael Walden Terry bozzio Steve gadd & Neil peart are hero's that help influence me to play in the first place. But guys like Tim Alexander. Danny Carey. John stainer. Mike bordin are the guys who reinvigorated my playing & gave me another reason to keep playing an never give it up. I can't leave out Charlie benante & Dave Lombardo& What they gave me in the late eighties early nineties.....but most of all ,thanks to Tim.
Tim is truly unique!
I own the drums Tim plays in this video. I was at this clinic. A few days later, I went to the DrumPad and purchased the 7-piece TAMA Starclassic Performer kit. I will be selling it if anyone is interested. Comes with the DVD of course. Very cool to watch T. A. play YOUR drums.
What size were those Bass Drums?
I have the 5-piece version. Your comment is 5 years old, but I’ve been looking for the 16” floor Tom forever, and since they’ve been discontinued they’re impossible to find.
@@jake7945 it’s a 20”
Did your drumming career not go as planned?
@@eis904 I got older and didn't care to breakdown, hall, setup, play, breakdown, unload that kit. Small time local band just having fun now and playing Roland now.
that groove in Spaghetti Western makes me crazy
Tim Balch I could play that beat continuously. Love that song so much.
.. and the nicest guy in the world. Class act.
Is the best hands down ! His grooves are so unique ! And his off beats are so detailed . Words can't describe his drumming ability
The stick throw at 7:44, then the kit falling apart at 12:49 without missing a beat. :)
Dang I didn't notice that cymbal falling either! That's crazy lol.
What a delight to watch and listen to a genius in action!
Wow so much musicality in everything he does
I can’t believe the great algorithm waited this long to send me this! One of my top 5 drummers. He was firing on all cylinders!
Kinda wish he’d done Over the Electric Grapevine though
Ive never seen this guy play and I sure wish I had before now!!!I love his style,he has a very unique pocket which seems to be pretty much all his own,a very unusual sense of rhythm....his transitions and just overall technical knowledge is contagious....the more I listen the more I want to listen...its amazing Ive not seen any of his videos before maybe not quite as polished as Danny carrey but very very close its one thing to have all the bells and whistles but to also incorporate them in a tasteful way without overplaying is another thing completely....I guess what Im trying to say is what a great drummer this guy REALLY IS....
Dude tim is the MAN . As a self taught drummer I have to comment on how impactful Tims' style was in inspiring me to try to push myself to learn techniques and timing that seemed and sounded impossible ...I think Tims' drumming sorta ushered me into bigger possibilities of drum sounds and got me excited about players like Stewart Copeland ,terry bozio
Also,
The My name is Mud beat is still untouchable ❤
Incredible and professional
I'm not even a drummer and yet I still love to watch this all the way through, his playing is entrancing...
He changed the broken Stick very quickly...Amazing
This is amazing. HERE THEY COME!
He is not simply keeping time with sweet beats...he is 'playing' the drums.
Incredible. One of my top 5 fav drummers.
Definitely underrated one of my favorites for sure
This is music. He is true artist.
Lovely, now i have to buy a remote hi hat. Thanks Tim
The gorilla analogy Claypool made totally makes sense now.
Hyptonic...love herby! Could listen to him all day.
Tim is Sugar foot meets Thor's Hammer! So good!
Artist!! this guy makes the drums sound like music! i like how much power and delicacy he plays in. power kicks ,flourish of subtle sounds and he incorporates the colors into a groove. his splash cymbal work is over the top! most drummrs create about 3 layers of sound. this dude has like 10! go herb! top of the drum heaps.boom
Watching this reminds me of my drum lessons in the mid-90s. Tim was def an influence.
I just found this video! Old rooted in hard rock 4/4, had to practice sixty beats per minute and increase to still too slow for my imagination through all pages in A Funky Rock Primer, I think saturation in Sailing the Seas of Cheese, renewed and times discovered during recent years' welcome isolation, got me unwittingly counting odd times. The drive of Alexander's work and brain and work and metronome practice ad veni vidi vici is one hard core motivator to drive on when there is nothing to go on.
Impressive, i have always love that drummer! GG! 🙂
Always love the way he plays and always in the groove!
I wanna hear the end of Frizzle Fry exactly how he plays the kick drums on the album version. I’m half convinced something is overdubbed. It’s amazing work.
I could listen to another hour!
Love those TAMA drums!!!
Favorite drummer of all
One of the best! Primus grooves are infectious and thats a lot of Herb's doing!
Just starting to listen to a lot of primus, this guy is where the magic happens. His drumming is so catchy.
I didn’t know till over 20 years later that this guy play on the first a perfect circle album on the first song the hollow. One of my favorite songs
He makes it look so easy! Great drummer, really great.
This is pure amazingness.
Favorite drummer..hands down
It's a shame most people have never heard of his band Attention Deficit with Alex Skolnick and Michael Manring. There's some stellar work on those albums.
I have always been a Primus fan and being a drummer myself, I hadnt ever really sit and watched and listened to him until he shared the stage with Danny Carey from tool and I was absolutely blown away
A student from the school of Bozzio is now and has been a master! Great drummer!
Holy crap he has a lot of effect cymbals.
1 of my favourite drummers alongside Gavin Harrison Simon Phillips Gerry Gaskill and Gene Hoglan
Tim’s sound is very distinct and amazing! Especially is bass drum.
I'm not ashamed to admit that the double bass pattern at 14:27 made my parts tingle
You aren't alone Bro lml
Herb is Incredible !!
still one of my favorite drum videos of all time.
Tim is my biggest inspiration to play drums. He rights some really interesting and iconic drum parts and has a feel of that of Neil Peart and Stewart Copeland
That Laundry is so IMPOSIBLE!
Genio, groso,Master,no tengo mas palabras para describir a este tipo.
prob the coolest drum kit ever too :)
the way the beat subtly changes when the vocals come in in here come the bastards always causes my neck to become like joe dart's
Seas of cheese, Undertow and the first 2 DMB albums taught me how to REALLY play the drums.
best drummer in the world
It takes me 10 mins of trial and error to get my snare and HH stand legs exactly where/how I want them. Seeing all those stands at 9:57 will give me nightmares!
The whitespace is intact and correct, we can all feel it, few can play it right.
Wicked! That was fucking amazing, especially if u know the album 'sailing the sea's of cheese'. He's a fucking rhythm ninja.
I remember hearing Tommy the cat when it was first released, I was impressed with the style and flow, it sounded thrash metal but funky at the same time.
Re: correction on the reference in my earlier comment. A Funky Primer For the Rock Drummer by CHARLES DOWD (my first drum lessons' book; I dug it out of its storage box).
He is for sure Top drummer !
also the best kit ive ever seen
Herb is a BEAST
He's a different level of drummer. Like Josh Freese. You have to be able to play in any time signature to be amazing.
Exquisitely brilliant...
snarework is so awesome
Love the song that played over the intro
he play like majishen.so free for the feel .so good the sound.my favorites of drum
creo que es el estilo que mas me gusta, esos mini platillos suenan increíbles !!!!
So. Many. Drums.
Also his grooves are so fluid and somatic, despite the complex time signatures it doesn't sound cerebral. Sometimes I wonder if he wrote these by actually counting or by feel. Also on one uses the flam and flamadiddle to such effect like herb the ginseng drummer.
Tim, Copeland, and Cobham... Three of the Bests... Wow, don't forget Neil Peart !!!
WARNING:graphic footage of groove rape

great flow
Such a complex drummer. Beautiful sounds. What I don't get is how to you memorize so many songs with so much variations? Or is that the key? Either way, you will always be a drum role model for me. Absolutely love your amazing work!
