He seems like a pretty cool guy. I saw a video where he sat in on a tool song with a group of kids, and the look on his face throughout the song showed he was having an amazing time. Playing with a bunch of kids!
8:11 Pure expression, emotion, and love for his craft. You can tell by the way he just destroys his cymbals and drumheads. Especially during the climax of the song.
The snare roll at 2:33 is one of the craziest things Danny has ever done. It might not sound like it, but descending through those sub-divisions like that in 11/8 time and coming out of it so fluently is NOT EASY... to say the least.
Despite having played bass for a year, i know barely anything in terms of theory. It's all brute force and feel for me, but that is one of the few things that i've actively looked up for the theory behind. I always thought that he was just slowing down your ordinary 32 snare roll, but alas, it's not going to be that simple when you're Danny Carey.
It's the creativity...there may be faster drummers, or more technical drummers, but Danny plays with such ingenuity and honesty in all of Tool's songs. He will forever be remembered when they are long forgotten...
"... there's no "blocking" between thought and execution. "Do you know what I mean? Like when you are talking, you are instantly converting thought into words, because the mind is so developed. Listening to Danny's playing it's obvious that he can instantly execute whatever comes to his mind. That alone makes his one of the greatest but he takes it even one step further: he's playing is so tasteful, serves the song and is just pure pleasure to listen to." Best i've heard Carey described.
8:11 THAT FUCKING EMOTION. He looked like he wanted to destroy that fucking kit. I know the feeling. When you play the ending part to Lateralus, it is nearly impossible to play it quietly. As soon as you get to "spiral out," you just fucking destroy your kit like it just took your wife. It's the pure and raw emotion that gives you the feeling that nobody else can even begin to fathom.
Big D is a good dude. We were talking music and he said this is one of the toughest (musically challenged) songs he plays... Danny is a great guy and beast at drumming. Come out to the Mint in L.A. June 28 to watch him and JZ throw down with their band Volto..
wow.....just wow, he drops his stick and covers it up like a master.... Danny is something else I watch his videos damn near everyday and it could never get old !

Does anyone else notice how smoothly his drumming has progressed from undertow to 10000 days ? I can't see how anyone could outdo this guy in his game. Definitely to date the most original and outstanding metal percussionist ever.
Danny Carey is my favorite metal drummer. I remember July 24th, 2009. I was at their concert on LSD, And i literally felt that his drumming was surrounding me and I felt so damn happy. That was literally the best night of my whole fucking life and it will ALWAYS be the best night of my life.
Absolutely correct The first left hit is not bad but getting that other one in on time or even at al with that damn flam is so frigid hard It’s the little key things he does that makes the drumming hard almost in every song he challenges u like no other drummer Definitely the best and most creative drummer I’ve ever witnessed play In concert can’t wait to go c them again bro
@@asmodeus9075 I can attest to that, although I can't play anything nearly this technical! haha. Also, he's not playing it EXACTLY like the record. There's a lot more variation you can get away with as a drummer then say, a guitar player.
I always watch him play trying to figure out how he plays (I'm not a drummer, but I have sat down to a drum kit so i know how hard it is to play). In the end i always tell myself to just sit back and enjoy the music he produces without worrying about all the little details it takes to do what he does, because that spoils the music. His playing is a beautiful combination of power, rhythm and structure.
Danny Carey's creativity, technical capabilities, and especially power are all amazing. I don't agree with comparing musicians but I honestly don't think there will ever be a drummer that does what he does as well as he does, especially when it comes to having his drums speak his emotions and the way you can feel the sounds when he plays, not just hear them. Definitely my favorite drummer.

For an excellent drum deconstruction of what Danny is really doing look up Rosetta stoned drum cover by John Kew. Very good break down and also unbelievably good performance of the song
It's actually nice to see what's behind the technique. Also, I think Danny would be flattered that someone took the time to deconstruct his work and try to understand it.

Danny Carey still remains humble and appreciative of those who came before him. even after selling 10's of millions of albums and selling out countless stadiums and tours.
6:38 is unbelievable. Right foot kick in 5/4, Left foot high hat 4/4, hands playing swiss triplets in 6/4. I'd say objectively the most complex drum part of any Tool song. Mind blowing.
you know why this is called a drum 'clinic'? it's not only to show a drummers talents, but to expose the difficulty of the piece and you have to ponder... this isn't an ordinary clinic, he's performing in Kansas major city, in front of major artists, under the lime light, and, to any drummer, to make things worse, he has the world's best, hands down, drum tech known to man. if he messes up constantly in front of a bunch of fans, nobody bats an eye lash, but fuck up a few times in a group of pros and everyone loses their minds...
I wouldn't say the best technique, I've seen Neil peart play live 10 times and the dude is a little better than Carrey, but don't get me wrong Carrey is definitely #2 right behind neil
Danny Carey, like Neil Peart, plays Tool songs live note-for-note from the record. That's why Tool and Rush are such great bands to see live (apart from the fact that they're awesome in general). When you have songs that were so masterfully put together on record, you WANT their concerts to be predictable, to be straight from their records. Hell ..... If Tool had a concert where they played every album from start to finish, I'd stand for the entire 6-hour performance.
I believed my parents when they told me that I could be whatever I wanted. That illusion died when I watched this video. I could never be this good at drums.
some of yall just have no idea that band drummers, most of them anyway feel very uncomfortable without their band mates performing with them in public. also this song may be on of the hardest song ever to play on drums.
+Justin Allen This is so true! So much communication happens when they are playing together: eye contact during certain phrases, body language, etc. that it's really difficult to keep the same feel when you are playing alone. Thank you for mentioning this.
very true, I think there are only 2 other drummers who could do this style of drumming to audio of a song with no band mates In front of an audience and they are Neil Peart and Joey Jordison, if you've ever seen any of these 3 live in person you'd understand just how great they are, and if bonham were still alive he'd be on this list
+Justin Allen i agree with what you said about playing alone as a drummer, but Rosetta Stoned is far from being the "hardest song ever to play on drums". You just can't make such a statement. Take just "Bleed" by Meshuggah for instance, and you would have an example of a song ten times harder to play on drums. And even Bleed is far from being the hardest, you have to take into account songs from other bands that simply don't belong to the "Metal" category. Well, sorry but your statement was total bullshit but it's ok. There are plenty of Tool songs which are harder to play also. Aenima and Lateralus were full of songs that are way difficult to cover. Reflection for example is a song that only Danny Carey in the whole world could make sound like it does on the album. The only tricky part in Rosetta Stoned is this polyrythm which is quite simple to decipher and to reproduce.
i can "get" how most bands do it. i can at least "get" how some bands do it. but for the life of me, i just can't "get" how these guys make this music. so amazing.
I´d manage to sync this video with the original song. Start de vídeo when the song is at 0:26 seconds, turn off the video audio and enjoy Danny Carey playing along with the original song. Maibe it will require some adjustments.
On the surface it seems so random, almost like a drum jam within the song. It becomes monumental when you realize that this is exactly as he wrote it, And REPEATABLE!!! Even after all these years it’s still, WOW!!!

It is tough to play along without a click... try it yourself. And thanks to the uploader for this sick vid!!!
@somethingbetterfilms where many drummers play fills for flash, danny carey writes each part to bring out elements of the music that he is playing. all of his rhythmic compositions are so thoughtfully chosen. being flashy isn't the main goal, it is to take the music to the next level. when you get down to it, he is the reason tool works and why their songs are so epic. he is the foundation, creating the perfect path for the music. my favorite rock drummer, hands down.
Jonathan DelSanto I didn't post any "numbers", I posted the different times in the video, AKA 5:28 being 5 minutes 28 seconds into the video. The polymeters in the first two I believe are 5/8 and 6/8 together, and at the very end being 11/4 over 5/8 over 6/8, transitioning to 7/4 over 5/8 over 6/8.
***** Sorry, wasn't trying to be a dick, I can see how it'd come off that way, was trying to make it seem like a more indifferent or informational sort of tone. Apologies if it came off that way.
Franklin Scott I've heard before that he actually doesn't but who knows whether that's true. I've never heard him say it himself. Just secondhand sources.
He's got 4 actually, one for each limb. That's what polyrhythmic drumming is by definition- at points in this song he is playing 3 time signatures at once. Johnkew has a Rosetta Stoned drum analysis video that explains it pretty well, it's absolutely insane.
This just goes to show that it is all so well rehearsed!! In one word - fucking phenomenal! Ok, that's TWO words, but, either way, i think it works. That 'stick drop' at 6:11 is just to die for! Watch it, get it, and tell me it isn't. Danny fuckin' rocks... \m/ (:o)
What time is it? It's beautiful snare sound o'clock. Those two racks have been replaced by another roto these days. Makes me less apprehensive to use them.....

Its now officially ok to drop your drum sticks mid performance. If danny carey does it, that means its right to do it
As long as you can do it while playing a crazy polyrhythm and recover without missing a beat.

Love the poly-meters at 5:28, 8:49, and 10:15/10:28
The numbers that you just posted... I heard that those are the actual time signatures used in this song.
Jonathan DelSanto I didn't post any "numbers", I posted the different times in the video, AKA 5:28 being 5 minutes 28 seconds into the video. The polymeters in the first two I believe are 5/8 and 6/8 together, and at the very end being 11/4 over 5/8 over 6/8, transitioning to 7/4 over 5/8 over 6/8.
sihplak Dude, don't be a dick.
***** Sorry, wasn't trying to be a dick, I can see how it'd come off that way, was trying to make it seem like a more indifferent or informational sort of tone. Apologies if it came off that way.
oh its no big deal, i guess it's downright impossible to provide perfect context for everything
5/4, 11/4, 3/4 all in one song. one important part of what makes tool a unique rock band
danny must have a clock in his head
And in each arm and each leg (and his left armpit when gongs are involved)
LimitIsIllusion well hes a drummer so im sure he just hears in metronome while playing
most musicians do.
I love that he laughs when the audience applauded. He's so sweet :)
Such raw beauty brings tears to my eyes
What time is it? It's beautiful snare sound o'clock.
Those two racks have been replaced by another roto these days. Makes me less apprehensive to use them.....
There is no word in the English language to describe how awesome this is.
He messes up at 3:28 pretty bad lol, human after all.
Gotta love Tool. Saw them at All Points West this year. Mind blasting as usual...
3:28-3:32 Danny is human for about 4 seconds
And you can see on his face how irritated he is with himself for it.
Displays human-like behavior*
The way he recovers from that stick drop at 6:13 is so inspiring. Only someone like Danny Carey can make fucking up look so cool.
So many mics yet we get this
LimitIsIllusion microhones or micro grams?
ive had this video favorited for a looooooooooong time and i still cant stop watching it, hes so amazing...even though he messed up twice im still not convinced hes human
