  • Our pole barn house is really coming together as we finish the loft space.
    It doesn’t do us much good without a staircase!
    So we bought a one on the internet…

    Great video y'all. There's a DeWalt concrete anchor called a mini undercut. It's designed to only into the concrete 3/4". It comes with a stop bit to help ensure that.

    I know EXACTLY what you were talking about with drilling the slab. I CRINGED every time we had to drill a hole in ours. We had pictures and some measurements, but not enough to cover it all. So far we still have pressure on all our lines. We are doing a homemade all wood spiral staircase to our loft.

    Thanks for showing this. Our house has a really weird 3rd floor access with a super tight spiral staircase that lands on a sketchy catwalk that runs between two loft-style attic rooms. The catwalk terrifies me every time I try to walk on it. I actually haven't been inside the room farthest from the stairs in over 5 years! I'm hoping to install something like this in the future. One for each room.

    In the future if you have to drill into floor. Let the house cool off then turn on radiant heat. Use a thermal camera or if the runs are far enough apart you can feel it.

    No issues with the Pex in concrete yet? I've heard of the lye or other chemicals breaking down the pex plastic over time. Usually from moisture getting drawn in.

    Your stairs look amazing. I’m looking for space savings stairs for a loft space. Would it be possible to let me know what the drop from your loft space is and how far out the steps stretch from the wall. That would give me an idea if they would work for me as my space is pretty tight. Many thanks.😊

    Interesting. Awesome documentation and LOL at drilling the holes in the slab blind. Yikes!
    The non code-compliant aspect of the stairs seems like a pretty big bummer. Is there some reason you didn't want that space to be a legal habitable area? (Maybe some small property tax incentive? or max sq-footage limits for your project?

    I have a homemade ladder going up to my loft and I can carry a cup of coffee in complete darkness up the ladder being a senior. My ladder is hard on me but yours looks like an accident waiting to happen. I was looking for alternatives but I'm thinking my best alternative might be to decrease my angle and have wider treads on a homemade ladder. Yours looks extremely user unfriendly. has it gotten easier with time or have there been any incidences?

    How tall would the walls need to be for the loft to have enough headspace to be up-to-code bedroom(s)?

    • @LittleMountainLife
      @LittleMountainLife  2 года назад

      Our side walls are 12’ tall and you’d want to go with at least 16’ side walls to have a proper full sized bedroom up there. I can’t remember exactly what the code says but I believe more than 50% of the room needs at least 7’ headspace to be considered a bedroom.

    Very informational! I'd like to consider this product for a spiral staircase spiral in a pretty tight space. I wonder, to what degree can you "spiral" this staircase? Are there any "twist/turn" limits on the metal cylinders?
