    When Gatsby sees Daisy for the first time is mesmerising. The music, the nervousness, the deep feelings; everything about this scene I love. Leo encapsulated Gatsby's character so well.

      @santo2679 7 лет назад +6

      nahh, the actors were great, the director’s choice of music and filming style was terrible. This is supposed to be a really awkward and intense scene in the book. He should not have had any music playing, it should have been silent. Silence is uncomfortable and therefore awkward, it would have made this scene a lot better if the director went with the book, instead of trying to romanticize Gatsby’s and Daisy’s relationship. Because in reality, Gatsby is very creepy, obsessive and weird towards Daisy

    • @nwilt7114
      @nwilt7114 5 лет назад

      @@santo2679 Silence might have read wrong. If you didn't want music some of Gatsby's thoughts and the ambient rain noise would have been good instead. This type of love feeling is mad and not to many people actually experience it. You can't go a day without thinking of that person, and when you see that person after not seeing them for years, and just communicating by letters/phone, it's like the universe flipped upside down and you'll full of anxiety and love until you eventually calm down after some awkward slow talk on both sides and then the balls starts rolling and you can only hope that the relationship blossoms into something more defined instead of constantly being lost in thoughts of hope.

      For me one of the best scene in the movie is when Nick arrives in the cab at late evening, and Gatsby is waiting for him. When he says he is going to invite daisy for tea Jay wants to give him a chance make some extra money in gratitude for his help Nick says it's just a favor, and he is happy to do it. You can see how Gatsby didn't know what to say, I think for all those years when he's climbing to the top he met people who care only about his money and in this moment he realize that Nick is something else than the rest of this rotten crowd, he is a really good man and his truly friend

    The part where Gatsby is surprised when Nick tells him that "Daisy is embarrassed too" really shows to me how much he idealizes her, that it couldn't even occur to him that she could be ashamed or even have negative feelings. He's so thoroughly convinced the awkward situation is all because of him that he doesn't event think as to what could be going on in her mind because he's so fixated on crafting the perfect beautiful scenario to impress her.

      That's why I like of Edmond Dantes who simply instead of fivent trapped in love for Mercedes in The Count of Monte Cristo, he forgets her and manages to love another woman, haydee. Unfortunately the film did not do justice to edmond idealizing a relationship that in the novel no longer existed. He did not get stuck in love for mercedes.
      Jay gatsby preferred to be stuck in the past as Heathcliff of Whutehinr Heights with an unrequited or lost love.

    To go on.. another thing i noticed, at 1:29 you can see Gatsby take in a deep breath to say something from all his excitement and nervousness. BUT he maintains his gentleman like composure and his manners to allow her to speak FIRST. You can see her taking a deep breath right after but can't find the words to say to her long lost love...
    In the Tea scene notice how Gatsby lets Daisy drink first before he continues. He always puts her first..

      Nate Dawg Yea, James Cameron is the artist, but nevertheless, Leonardo has done so many memorable characters, and put a lot of heart and soul in his acting, it's ridiculous they haven't given him an Oscar for his best works. Now when he gets it eventually, it will feel as though they gave it to him because of obligation more than anything. Just shows the Oscars are more about popularity contests than artistic merit. They go by trends.

    1:25 We had to analyze this scene in my AP Lit class. Its significant because even though hes amassed a fortune and fine tuned himself to be this impeccable gentlemen, the moment he has been waiting for for 5 years has finally come, and he stands before her soaking wet with tears in his eyes, scared. For that one moment, he was returned to his loving boyish innocence, with nothing but his love.

    The fact that Gatsby is still dressed up to his sharpest defying the fact that he had an all-night party the day before, just proves how disciplined he is. While the silver shirts and shiny cufflinks are not for everyone, he makes a good point with this clothing in this scene: never dress below what is expected of you.

    • @Jessa-RM
      @Jessa-RM 7 месяцев назад +2

      No, what is expected of you exactly, their clothes are made to telegraph their wealth. I think for Gatsby he never dresses less than what he expects and wants for himself. He's a self-made man and he's trying to copy the ways of the rich but he doesn't quite fit in that world and he isn't quite accepted.

      +PopTartsAndCinemax I think you're right about Mulligan's portrayal, but i completely disagree with the rest of your comment. I thought it was impossible to miss the sincerity of love in the way she looks at Gatsby alone. It seems undeniable that Daisy loves him to me. In my opinion the paradox of Daisy is that as vain as she is, she's ultimately lacking altogether in self-confidence. She knows she's beautiful and charming, and there's no doubt she takes great pride in her affect on people. But that's because her beauty is the one thing she has to be confident in. The way I interpret the character is that she's been taught all her life that her only worth is in her pretty face, and that she has no intelligence or value otherwise. This is what she meant by the "beautiful little fool line," because in this era the pretty bimbo was not only the ideal role women were supposed to play, but really the only one. Because Daisy even sees herself as worthless, she feels completely reliant on the

      +PopTartsAndCinemax men in her life. In fact she doesn't feel she can make any real decisions whatsoever; this is why she will never leave Tom for Gatsby. Carey Mulligan herself describes her interpretation of Daisy as someone who needs to be move. She's not strong or secure enough to make a big choice, so she lets both Tom and Gatsby sweep her along to whatever they want her to do and becomes whoever they want her to be.

      +PopTartsAndCinemax That is true, I'm not saying she's a great person. But I don't like when people make her out to be the villain of the story and Gatsby to be some romantic white knight. Gatsby didn't live Daisy, he valued her like he would a possession. That's not even an inference, it's states quite plainly in the novel that the interests of other men "increased her worth in his eyes." In my opinion every character in the story is equally awful, except for Tom who is naturally the most despicable person, and Jordan who ironically is a well-known cheat but is still the most honest person. Nick himself is arrogant, judgmental, and ultimately very two faced since he hates the Buchanans but still pretends to be their friend. He's also guilty of idolizing a delusional man and buying into his ridiculous notions, not to mention being self righteous. Gatsby uses Nick blatantly, and obsesses over possessing Daisy, which many people seem to disturbingly mistake for love.

      +PopTartsAndCinemax so yeah that line is true. But I think it's meant to be applied to every character because they're all selfish and cruel to each other

    The truth is when a guy loves a girl to the point that , the girl can make him or break him,the girl most of the time doesn't respect the guy when she can sense that she has a lot of power over the guy. When a girl becomes indispensable for a guy, he starts acting desperate, he loses it and the girl loses respect for the guy. As Carl Jung said, the guy is like clay in her hands.

      alessandra ruiz It's a slightly naive POV. gatsby's love for daisy wasn't just about feelings. He was fixated on her and his desire for her was more twisted. Although he honestly felt he loved her to death, there was something fundamentally flawed about his desire for Daisy. Daisy was a coward in some ways herself for continuing to be with a man who regularly cheats on her even though she may have wanted exclusivity.

    Also the fact that he doesnt talk that much about his private life as a man really helps getting into his characters.

    It's rare to see Leo do vulnerable and appear completely at the mercy of the person he faces. Certain actors come to mind; Anthony Hopkins, Tilda Swinton, Cate Blanchett, Sam Shephard, Ryan Gosling, Kate and Rooney Mara, John Wayne, Robert Redford, Clint Eastwood, Robert Mitchum, Richard Burton, Paul Newman, Humphrey Bogart, Steve Mcqueen, De Niro, Mia Wachowski, Oscar Issac, Matthew Goode, Alexander Skarsgard, Joaquin Phoenix, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp.
    As individuals they seem too nonchalant, self-possessed, remote and certain about themselves to appear vulnerable even as an act. There is no reading them.
    As a result they come across as pure performers who as ironical as it sounds are in a way detached even flippant about the perception of their performance. They elicit admiration, desire, envy, fear rather than empathy. Watching them perform is like witnessing a furtive act of nature. At no point will they let you in or share the position regarding their character.
    Love it!
