I just realized that Nick and Jordan third-wheeled in the entire novel.
As TvTropes would call it, "Pair the Spares"
That's literally all I could think about the whole movie lol. Even we the audience third wheeled too. Since we're in nick's pov.
especially nick
They should've dated lol
They Dated in the Books
The fact that everything looks saturated and CG-like almost helps to capture the essence of the book and Fitzgerald's overall message: it is has this shiny, glossy sheen with bright lights and vivid colours that is almost dreamlike on the surface, beautiful to look at (and to listen to), but going deeper the actual story is tragic with unlikable characters and an unhappy ending. It's almost like they've put the mood of the book into visual terms: it looks unrealistic...because the mood of wealth and brightness tied to the American Dream in the 1920s was unrealistic.
This film was severely underrated and is, IMO, the best adaptation of the novel possible.
Perfectly said. People act like the look of the cgi was an accident or mistake but it was most definitely intentional.
Beautiful take! It’s pleasant to look at, but you can see artificial of it all.
I would drop a like but your at exactly 600 and that’s too satisfying to break
Baz was the best person to direct this adaptation. You want more proof? Romeo & Juliet (1996) with a young Leo and Moulin Rouge (2001)
That string of pearls is $350,000 in 1919. That translates to over $5 million in today's money. 😮
Well yes that’s how inflation works
@@AladeenofWadiya1 its called a fun fact buzzkill
If they were natural matching pearls it could be way more expensive today. cultured pearls were invented twenty years before Daisy was a debutante and it was still an expensive propriety thing. If they were cultured pearls, they would fetch far less today.
Not that I have an Economics degree but I think inflation has grown more than 15 fold since 1919. Gold was about $20 an ounce back then.
@@BandiGetOffTheRoof a penny was like a dollar
When your bestfriend spills your marriage tea
That's why I keep my marriage tea between me and my husband lol 😂
True
😅😆😂
The scene of her breaking the string of pearls was actually really powerful. In the book she could never give up the lifestyle Tom provided to be with someone like Gatsby who was considered 'new money' and she was always unable to express her true emotions and would retreat back into the life of prestige and luxury she grew up in. Except, in this one clip when she lashed out and pearls went flying everywhere it essentially showed her finally putting love before anything else, and lashing out about how she feels. I know that in the end she turned on Gatsby but I think at one point their love was definitely real because she was even willing to give up the wealth that would be handed to her, which is what destroying the necklace represented.
and then the necklace being put back together and worn by her again signifies her ultimate bond to that old money lifestyle :0 woah
I hated the book really lol
Thanks for explaining more specifically to let us know better
the real gag? Real pearl necklaces have knots between each pearl, making the necklace much easier to fix if broken, and making it so the pearls would never scatter all over. The way in which the necklace breaks here insinuates the $350,00 necklace was made of plastic beads, and not in fact, true pearls.
Matt Libra hmm, interesting. Maybe the fake pearl necklace is representing Daisy’s artificial and shallow mindset about love and wealth. Or maybe Tom winning Daisy with money, but not by love. And Daisy thought the necklace was authentic pearls.
jordan is my favorite in this movie. in their world everyone is so committed to pretending to be perfect little people but jordan doesn't pretend to be deeper or better than she is. she just lives the high life and enjoys the drama between her friends. she's the best lol
Jordan has known Daisy all her life which means that she has always led an equally wealthy and privileged lifestyle all of her life
She's even better in the book ! She had way more of a part
That’s the exact reason Nick liked and hated her at the same time. He specifically mentioned when she was lent a car, let it out in the rain to get drenched and the proceeded to say it wasn’t her. I don’t think she was believed , just no one intruded either because they did not want to get involved due to getting on her bad side or held no regard because it wasn’t their car.
she’s portrayed as a liar and didn’t care about myrtles death though.
She was so perfectly cast, the way she speaks and the way she moves is so beautiful. She was my favorite character in the book too.
Jordan's narration accompanied by Lana's voice and the instrumentals just haunt me. Oh and the look of complete love on Gatsby's face. "The way he looked at her is the way all girls wanna be looked at"....
Yes I love that line...
The editing of this film is so bizarre in the best possible way.
Thats Baz Luhrmann, If you like this, you should check out his other movies.
As much as I liked it in some cases it gave me a headache 😂
So much CGI... it was really jarring
I think Jordan has one of the best storytelling voices...her soft alluring voice and story manner of speaking....it makes this scene even better :)
Jordan was by far the most interesting person in this entire story. She's a self made woman and has her finger on the pulse of everything going on but never allows it to affect her personally.
Ikrr
She's old rich just like Daisy, and it's implied that she bought her fame as a Golf star
Well in the book it says she cheated in her golf tournaments
It’s too bad Fitzgerald didn’t write her as a second love interest for Gatsby
she cheated with her golf
Where has Tobey Maguire been since this film came out, it's hard to see one of the biggest actors of the 2000s to just vanish into the next decade
@@Italonino wow...though great choice for Cerra... Maguire also has that baby boy angel face.
I'd imagine it was this film and its bad casting

The Boss Baby
Everyone is a snake in this movie
Except for Nick
Nompumelelo Thwala and Gatsby (mostly).
@@nompumelelothwala6573 I'd disagree. Though he did give people the benefit of the doubt, his passiveness towards all of the indecency in the lives of his "friends" around him, I think, makes him a little guilty in a way. He was sucked into the corrupt, but glamorous game/lifestyle of the rich and famous, and sort of let everything play out as it did without much obligation for intervention. Indulging in the gossip I think in a way makes him a bit of a snake.
@@stephenmccarthy2517 I think you're kind of right, his moral code of holding back judgment turned on him in that sense, however towards the end of the book he openly displayed his disdain towards the Buchanans. That was his whole character arc.
I know right? And somehow in this movie you still feel bad for most all of them in some way
"It was Gatsby" that line and the music at it ..wow
😭😭
Asmara Pretrick I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE
“And the way he looked at her.. is the way all girls want to be looked at” that line too.. hit me hard 😭
The instrumentals, Lana and Jordan's voice narration, it's too nostalgic.
You know since you are one of the few that can appreciate good editing and song choices you may be good at filming and editing your own videos you should look into it! :o
Elizabeth debicki is such an amazing actress. Her voice, the pose. She steals every scene she‘s in.
0:12 *lil fun fact*
The waiter with the mustache is the director of this film, baz luhrman.
wow 😮
Elizabeth Debicki stole the whole movie for me. The way she narrates the story and her voice, her mannerisims, grace, the way she carries herself... she was the only character who actually looks from that era by the acting.
*Why does the woman look like Katy perry*
A skinny and tall version of Katy Perry
I was thinking more like Zooey Deschanel
Or Zoey deschenel
Except taller. She is 6' 3", and dwarfs a lot of men.
no she doesn’t just another face, she can’t look good in this role
I spent the whole movie wishing I could just hang out with Jordan and talk about everyone else. Nick screwed up big time when he let her get away.
Lurklen Actually, in the book she’s regarded as manipulative, shallow, and very selfish. She’s also a liar, and nick over the course of the book realizes all of this. She’s also engaged to another man throughout the whole thing but doesn’t let him know till the end of the book. I think this version is toned down from the book, and even watching now I still love her character, but I think Nick made the best choice.
@@isabellagriffis3061 even in this movie, she comes across as unconcerned, detached, and generally apathetic to most of the horrible events transpiring around her (a trait implied to have been brought on about by her obscene wealth and privileged lifestyle) , which was one of the main reasons why Nick didnt want to be with her in the novel as well.
Now hold on. Nick had a rumor follow him all the way from Chicago to Daisy and Tom that Nick was supposed to marry the girl he "didn't quite break it off with" yet. Everyone has _something_ to lie about, I don't care who you are.
@@TrelliessRose Exactly, he's not exactly innocent. Nick is prone to the same self delusion of his aloofness from the situation as anyone else, and in fact that's one of the things Jordan likes about him, until it isn't. I like Jordan because she's pretty honest about what you can expect, it's only when she starts to really feel something she gets hurt. She's slightly more real about how false everything in their lives is.
She’s shallow in the books
Lana Del Rey just completes the scene!
Taylor McKay where?
frenchie the music
yuh
Taylor McKay QUEEN😭🥺
It's perfect.
2:35 - the way the piano enters in.
the way tom holds the string of pearls like a leash... a symbol of his possesiveness
This scene has more personality than 99% of films made today.
It just feels too busy and crowded to me.
That's just simply not true. There are plenty, plenty of great films coming out today. You just need to watch them. My favorite film in recent memory would probably be Roma. The new Joker movie also looks like it's going to be pretty good. Watch those.
The director, Baz Luhrmann, has cited Italian-style grand opera has one of his influences, which are known to be very lavish. He also did a commercial with Nicole Kidman for Chanel in this style.

*Background actors acting indifferently*
“He bought that house to be near her.”
*how did I get chills on my head*
I always loved this scene best in the entire movie. The way Daisy broke down after reading the letter. “Tell then Daisy’s changed her mind” but the emotionless cynical look she has after marrying Tom. This is my favorite movie
1:36 That right there, that's terrifying
agenttheater5 Explain?
How?
@@jackdonohue7893 Ownership - placing the string of pearls round her neck, holding onto both them and therefore Daisy like that. Doesn't matter what he does, he'll not let Daisy leave him, she's an old money socialite and now he owns her.

Koekel Akouwnt LMAOOOOO
1:36 it’s a cool visual effect how they made it look like a string or a leash.
(Edit) chain not leash lol
See you’ve taken High-school English class 😂 This movie/book is chock full of symbolism and it’s the reason most English teachers like going over this book.
I also like how she snapped the chain symbolizing at that moment she didn’t want to marry Tom but eventually did (mother out the chain back together and recollared her)
tobey maguire is a criminally underrated actor..
Pizza time!
Jordan Baker is the essence of the magic of this movie. Daisy could never
That pearl scene will always live rent free in my head
Tom's got you by the pearls, doesn't he?
I can't get over this fantastical version of New York City. It's almost like a dreamy fairytale kingdom in the clouds.
Jordan’s hat in this scene was the star of this whole movie
daisy's cries still give me chills
Nick: So what happened next?
Jordan: well I dont know
*Jordan continues to tell much more of the story*
I love how in the beginning, Jordan Baker was eavesdropping on Daisy and Tom's argument and here she wants Nick to lower his voice so (Daisy's history and) her own business doesn't get out in the open.
This lady should be the woman Gatsby falling in love with, not Daisy.
Mien Yue She is very beautiful but Jordan’s character is cold, distant and frivolous. This actress looks exactly how I imagined her while reading the book before the movie was released, . She shows a little humanity at the beginning but she always betrays that and chooses the superficiality of party life. Daisy, in the other hand, seems warm, pretty’s and innocent, almost like a child, although she betrays Gatsby at the end, just like everybody else, except for Nick who was the only one who cared for his friend.
Nick should be the one Gatsby falls in love with, there, I said it 🤷♀️

"On the last afternoon before he went abroad he sat with Daisy in his arms for a long, silent time. It was a cold fall day with fire in the room and her cheeks flushed. Now and then she moved and he changed his arm a little and once he kissed her dark shining hair. The afternoon had made them tranquil for a while as if to give them a deep memory for the long parting the next day promised. They had never been closer in their month of love nor communicated more profoundly one with another than when she brushed silent lips against his coat's shoulder or when he touched the end of her fingers, gently, as though she were asleep."

I watched this movie once and once only. 😭had me crying and punching the air, they did gatsby so dirty
What really takes your breath away is Jordan's beauty
I always found jordan mysterious.
But in a good way.
Sometimes it’s hard to tell her emotions. And other times it’s obvious. She is such an underrated character I think. Daisy was beautiful but so was jordan. I always wanted her and nick to get together.
The production design and CG, color palettes, color coordination, props and graphics, accurate costumes and makeup! It's all breathtaking and infinitely detailed. Catherine Martin really did an incredible job. Everything looks so brilliantly thought and thoroughly researched. Probably one of, if not the best film to visually, artistically and intimately portray 1920s New York, or even the 20s style in general. Two Oscars well deserved for her design work.
Edit: The design team actually looked through fashion magazines from the time including satirical illustrations of people from Vanity Fair to visually inspire each one of Gatsby's partygoers.
Elizabeth can to be bond girl or villain in next James Bond film if direct by Christopher Nolan
Muhamad Adry Rosly Tenet
She could spit Daniel Craig on his head 😂
Christopher Nolan already directed a Bond movie named "Tenet" starring debicki
I love their accents.
A high-class old American way of speaking...not very common today.
TransAtlantic accent
@@ashleycarr9589
Exactly right! The Trans-Atlantic is an American accent specifically cultivated with elements of both British and American English. It's a way of speaking that was once taught in prestigious schools, and commonly used by American actors of the time.
This is so dreamy, this is why I love the movie
Everyone’s talking about Elizabeth Debicki - they seem to be missing Baz Luhrmann’s starring role as the waiter at the start!
As much as the broken pearl necklace scene was powerful, it makes me laugh because real pearl necklaces have knots in between pearls as to not ruin them when they rub together, so they wouldn’t have all fallen off like that. Obviously it was for cinematography but I like to think that our Tommy-boy here was a total cheapskate liar 🤡
good point....i guess this goes the same for Martha Wayne's pearl necklace scene right?
LMAOO
It's an artistic choice to dramatize the scene. It's not a clue of him faking his wealth or cheaping out
$350,000 is not cheap even for todays money. If he spent that much money and it was fake that meant someone really did rip him off BIG time.
the slow young and beautiful instrumental playing in the background while jordan narrates the story is so beautiful

I edited this comment so the only way you know is if you read the replies to this
Because this was a flashback, it's not supposed to look real....
because there was a GREEN SCREEN to RECREATE many DETAILS AND Layouts, just like the entire New York city times Square from 20s, it is architectonical and by photos of that time, pretty accurate.
Its all intentional to make everything seem larger than life. It worked much better in 3D on the big screen
Pimp King Facts
The whole movie was pretty much heavily cgi to recreate that vintage look from the early 1900s. I remember watching this movie and also wondering why it looked like a fancy video game.
I can sympathize with Gatsby for his desire to impress Daisy. He hosts some of the most extravagant parties at his mansion, acquired a vast fortune, and expanded his reputation just to have a shot at getting back Daisy. It is inspiring yet tragic because his success is merely based on his desire to get Daisy. Daisy is his reason to gain a fortune and to live his hedonistic lifestyle. Without her, he will have no reason to continue with his success.
I too did a lot to have a shot at getting a girl I was infatuated with by studying hard in school, later going to a top tier university, buying a luxury car, learned to play guitar, and lived a wild life just to impress her. Just like Gatsby, I grew up from a low income background and the girl I was interested in was being groomed to be among the top students in our district (possibly the county) and she was higher in the social rankings than I was. Once I blew my chance with her during college, I decided to continue on with my life and no longer made her my only reason to continue improving my life. Too bad for Gatsby, he couldn't let go Daisy within those 5 years otherwise, he would have had a better life.
Man, from the looks of it, you don't just sympathize with Gatsby.
You empathize with Gatsby. Also, best of luck for your future...I hope you find a great partner as well :)
@Starscream91 Hush.

i adore this movie in a spiritual level
The movie shots and description most beautifly depict New York and its roaring years.

Have To Admit , this was one helluva stylish movie, makes me feel like going back in time to the 20s, oh i mean 1920s to be dressed up all like all those classic dandy blokes
This is the first time I've seen Elizabeth Debicki in a movie, she was amazing in Tenet 😍
This is one of the few scenes that makes you sympathize with Daisy
The debate on weather or not Daisy loved Gatsby is interesting, I however think she did. I think she's smarter than we think and than she'd like to be. Smart enough to know that for a woman in this time life is just easier if you follow "the rules". Everybody talks about how sad it was that Jay couldnt have Daisy even though he loves her so much, but it hurts Daisy too. She knows that he loved her and she DEFINITELY loved him. He was real in a world of fake rich people getting drunk to solve their problems and partying because they have gone to far to remove the glass which is pain that rests on the beds that they have made and shall forever sleep in. Daisy loved Gatsby
Yes, that's why she was crying when Gatsby was throwing the linens at her. At that moment, she knew she could've had both fortune and love. She's been with Tom for so long that she feels secure being where she's at, and that's why she was scared to get a divorce. It's like a relationship where the guy/girl doesn't feel comfortable living together even though they've been together for years because the individual is so use to living by him/herself. Change is hard when you adapt too much within that time period.
Background is so beautifully vintage like being in Memphis, NY or an old booming city in the 20s... Brilliant set design
I love this movie, the ending hurt so much because I just saw so much similarities between Gatsby's character with mine, and so much in the character of Daisy with the girl who hurt me
The tragedy of this book.
i'd look at jordan the way gatsby looked at daisy.
Am in love with 1920s ,it's the best era ever

It's too much, i can't follow every scene
It’s crazy to know this actress is only like 2 years older than me (she was born 1990) so when this movie came out she was like 24 ish? Yet she looks more matured.
He gave her a $6 million necklace in today's money.
The letter was about how he couldn’t believe that daisy went with another man, but he still loves her. Gatsby is the only honest good man
Gatsby's entire life was a LIE. He was a criminal who pretended to be Old Money.
happybkwrm still better than the rest
1:41 Unrealistic. Pearls are strung with knots between each bead and its neighbors specifically so that if the strand breaks that only one bead can be lost on the floor and that a scene like this cannot take place.
Elizabeth Debicki has the most hypnotic eyes!
The sound design on this is so nice
the fact that the beads in the necklace went flying cracks me up, because on a real pearl necklace, there are knots between each pearl so they can’t go flying
Elizabeth Debicki is 7 inches taller than Tobey Maguire. That must have been a tall apple box he had to stand on.
Bold of Daisy and Gatsby to sit right in the way of a golfer HAHAHAHA
Hollywood should always cast Elizabeth Debicki as mystical, glamorous women (also supervillains!)
The soundtrack really set it off for meee
1:56 still damn good for some reason XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
