When I first discovered the art of gel printing, I thought my granddaughter would enjoy creating using the plate. But they were quite expensive. I watched videos on how to make your own. So I gave it a try. It turned out well & she did enjoy making prints with it. I need to dig it out & give it a try. Thank you for caring for it.
Very useful info. My old boyfriend always said, “take care of your tools and they’ll take care of you”. My clamshell actually left a mark on my plate. At first I was annoyed and bought another plate and same thing happened. It just gives my prints character.
As I am new to the Ceri Griffiths creative world, I wanted to tell you how much I have been enjoying your videos and the depth of your explanations. Very well done, and so much fun listening to your stream of conscious thoughts. I look forward to going back through your videos and finding many hours worth of mixed media process and advice!
Great info. I just played with my 5X7 and realized i need to oil it. Somehow we must be on the same wave length! Storage containers and now conditioning gel plates! Thanks for sharing. You do beeautiful work, very clear explanations and i am very thankful, as a beginner, to hear your thoughts and your "formulas" for ephemera. It's not as easy for me to figure out things as when i was much younger. When someone has a plan, no need to reinvent; just modify and make it your own. P says "Be prepared to modify your (or someone else's) plan." 😉❤👍TFS.
Thank you so much for the info. I purchased my plate months ago but was not using it because I was unclear on how to care for it and make it last. You are a Hero! I do enjoy your videos, thanks again!
Thank you so much for sharing this information. I have had my gelli plate for a good chunk of time now and I have never reconditioned it. That is certainly something I will be doing in the near future.
Thank you so much for making this video, it’s by far the very best video I’ve seen on this topic! It’s very interesting to see all the different sizes & shapes & I’m pretty sure you’ve covered all the beginning info! Now I’m going to watch more of your videos using the gel plates! Hope all is well in your neck of the woods, it’s hotter than Hades in the US Midwest! Erica❤
Thank you for this beautiful video. I saw my first video that wasn’t properly explained like yours. Only have started 2 months ago and NOW TRYING to restore my plate. Thanks to you I think it’s minimal damage and Love your explanations for caring for gel plates. Will continue to watch your channel and XL out the others. ❤ Kathy
Great info, Ceri. Like everything, when you're new using a gel plate, there are such varied practices with it. I tend to lean toward someone's advice who has had a lot of practice with the item in question. Many thanks!
Ceri, I love that there is a reason for everything you do! I was aware of the cleaning technique, however, the conditioning was brilliant. I live in Arizona where the humidity is normally very low and everything dries out quickly. I’m sure that your suggestion about buying a 5x7 inch gel plate as a first purchase was helpful to so many people. Thank you for your very thorough explanation in all of your videos. 😊🐾🌵
Thanks for the detailed demonstration! I am definitely not as good at storing my plates, but i do periodically condition them, usually when i have stubborn paint that just won't lift off. I have painfully discovered from various intensive craft sessions that I am allergic to mineral oil😢, so I carefully glove up before massaging it into my plate, but it's doable. I also sometimes just wash my plates in the sink with soapy water first 😉.
What a great video - so informative. Wish I would have waited for this before I ordered my 12 x 12 & the other one. (My fault, certainly not yours, Ceri.) You answered everything, loved getting your demonstration. Thanks so much. Your wrist looks really good. Hope it's not hurting. Thanks again
Omgoodness, thank you for sharing your caring process for the gelplates. I've been lucky during my holiday and had a master class from my friend who uses a geliplate in her art, from which I have learnt so much, and also from your videos, I have ordered one, so when I get home I can have a play, but I also now know how to look after it. Love your videos, have a fantastic day xx
Thank you for sharing this method, Ceri! When I saw it, I "gasped", then ran upstairs to grab mine - And away I went! Appreciate you so very much, Betty :)
Brilliant tutorial, thanks so much Ceri. Enjoyed this so much. p.s. I like a clean plate too, and a clean brayer. I've been using cut up old terry towels (damp) to clean my brayer while my print is drying and love that method!
This was really helpful. I did get a indentation on my other plate know I know why ! Have started to store as you do and things seems to be going better. Thanks again hugs
Oh my gosh...great minds think alike? Maybe? 😃 I was putting mine away yesterday & wondering if I should be doing something to maintain them. Thank you my friend! Just love your instruction.
Thank you for your informative video. I love how you always explain everything inyour videos. They probably don't want people to condition their plates so theyhave to buy a replacement one 😊
I’ve got two gelli plates, and I’ve never done this, I didn’t know you were supposed to, lol. I’ll be doing it now though! Thanks for this really helpful video!
My gel plates are so bad with paint stuck to the surface. I placed the plate in my sink with warm water and poured on Murphys oil for a good soak. All the paint and grime came off. I am wanting to oil both sides of the plate with baby oil. Before cleaning the plate I could not get a good pull at all. Wish me luck! Love your channel
Hi Ceri, good information. What do you think about using, tissue paper, wax paper or parchment paper for the storing? My regular copy paper isn't big enough to cover my gel plate.
Tissue paper might tear if it takes on excess oil, wax paper should work but be aware it’s not leaving a film on your plate, parchment paper should be fine, you could even use baking paper which comes on a roll.
I never would have guessed how EXPENSIVE gel plates are!! While I save my pennies for one (or more), would it be worthwhile to get a smooth surface 18 x 18 inch tile to practice with? Are there any other surfaces that can be utilized that are less costly but give the same result?? Glass, plexiglass??? I made my own Tim Holtz glass mat with a shatterproof shelf (tempered glass) from our old refrigerator, and it's the bomb-diggity!! And it was WAYYY cheaper.
You can lay paint down on any flat shiny surface, lay paper onto it and then immediately pull it up but you’re not going to be able to leave your paper down to be pulled later. Every surface will give a unique effect.
Hi Ceri thank you for the lovely video! Since we mostly use acrylics on these plates, do you think a brush cleaner (the type you would use after doing an acrylic painting) would be good to use to get off some more of that paint residue before conditioning with the baby oil? Would appreciate your input thank you!
I ordered mine here in Britain from eBay, however if you look for 12x12 scrapbook storage boxes you’ll find something similar I’m sure, just make sure the base of the box is smooth so that it doesn’t indent your plate. In this video I think I show them in detail. ruclips.net/video/HgNtnzUWaag/видео.htmlsi=qTWawvNctGnrl6Bt
Wonderful video. Curious about the releasing of oil on the first prints you pull after conditioning. Do you do a pull with no intention of keeping it?...let it sit a bit on the newly conditioned plate so any excess oil may come off on that trial print? I like the baby oil, too, but I didn't condition both sides so that was new information for me. I will look into those storage containers to keep my plates safe. Thank you Ceri!
Love this. As a beginner it was extremely helpful. I am wondering why my paint seems to be sticking to the gel plate rather than the paper. I think my plate may need conditioning. Researching this topic led me to your video. Do you think that could be right?
Crazy question…what are the black dots you put on the gelli plates. I need them. Mine are traveling around when I’m using the plate. What are they called and where can I get them!! Thank you Ceri! Love all your videos!
I got them from my local pound store, they’re rubber feet that you put on the base of things to stop them sliding around. I think you can also get them from the hardware store.
Hi Ceri. thanks for this video. I have been kind of afraid of my jelly plate. So this helps me to know that I can help them if I mess them up to a certain extent. If you know what I mean. I do have an issue with it in that when I grayer the paint on it seems to bead up sort of. You may have answered this in a previous video but since I am a new subscriber I haven’t gotten to that one yet. Is there something I should do or certain brands of supplies I need to keep this from happening? Have you heard of this before? Thanks for all you do it’s been wonderful to find you!
Hi Cindy, beading of paint on a gel plate usually happens when you have a high flow or thinner consistency of paint, it can also happen if you’ve got residual oil on your gel plate. And then there are some mediums that just bead. You’re not doing anything wrong.
Marylyn that truly depends on how often you use it, I use my gel plate on average two days a week but its a full day of working on the plate and then I condition and clean my plate approx every eight weeks.....if I remember. But if my plate is getting really dirty or loosing its stickiness then I'll do a condition.
Isn’t it….I thought because it was paper it could be recycled, I did however buy the kitchen roll that is recycled paper to start with. Oh that’s annoying.
I must be the only person who can't use packing tape to clean my gel plate. I really like cleaning mine with mineral oil. I don't love the smell of baby oil.
Brenda I’m not sure this will work on a home made gel plate.
Very useful info. My old boyfriend always said, “take care of your tools and they’ll take care of you”. My clamshell actually left a mark on my plate. At first I was annoyed and bought another plate and same thing happened. It just gives my prints character.
Definitely.
So useful to actually see how to clean and condition.
I’m sure there’s other ways but this works for me.

It does improve the quality of your art work.
I got my first gelli plate this weekend and can see how it can become addicting. Still testing techniques but having loads of fun!!
Just remember not every print will be great but each will be a lesson learnt. Have fun creating.
Thank you so much. I learned a great deal. I am just starting in this craft, and now I can move forward with some knowledge of what I am doing. ❤

Thank you Ceri! I have a huge bubble in my 12x12 and think it is ruin. I know it must be from the way I store it. This video has been very helpful ❤️
Have you watched Carolyn Dube's video about getting bubbles out? It might help. Can you flip your plate over and use the other side?
Thank you
Yes do watch Carolyn it may help.
Very nice Ceri...thank you for showing all this xx ❤

Great information and so well presented Cheri! Now I don’t feel so bad about using up my Baby Oil 😄 Tfs
The gel plate companies say there is no reason to condition a plate….I disagree and so do many others as it improves the quality of your final pulls.

Joan I normally condition my plate at the end of a session so normally any excess oil has been absorbed by the time I use my plate next.
@@CeriGriffiths Thanks so much for the information.
Love this. As a beginner it was extremely helpful. I am wondering why my paint seems to be sticking to the gel plate rather than the paper. I think my plate may need conditioning. Researching this topic led me to your video. Do you think that could be right?
It could be that your paint is already dry when you put your paper down.
Crazy question…what are the black dots you put on the gelli plates. I need them. Mine are traveling around when I’m using the plate. What are they called and where can I get them!! Thank you Ceri! Love all your videos!

I tapped 2, too skinny acrylic plates together around the edges (remove the film covering all of the plates😉)
Fabulous Marta.
Hi Ceri. thanks for this video. I have been kind of afraid of my jelly plate. So this helps me to know that I can help them if I mess them up to a certain extent. If you know what I mean. Thank you for this, Ceri. Will the oil show up on my prints?
It shouldn’t but if it does it will be minimum and only on the first couple, usually only detectable from behind.
Interesting video. Do you use baby oil to clean your brayer?? Thanks
I just wipe it with a damp cloth at the end of each session.
What brand are those low plastic boxes. They are exactly what i need! Tia
Here is a link to the video where I explain all about the boxes. ruclips.net/video/flcLa0Qkpnk/видео.htmlsi=SEXdZJr39LRRw3Ef
Hi Ceri, how often would you suggest cleaning the Gelli plate?
Marylyn that truly depends on how often you use it, I use my gel plate on average two days a week but its a full day of working on the plate and then I condition and clean my plate approx every eight weeks.....if I remember. But if my plate is getting really dirty or loosing its stickiness then I'll do a condition.
@@CeriGriffiths thanks for the reply. Love the smell of the baby oil. lol, reminds me of my babies and stupidly, my sunbaking days! OMG!
💜💜💜
Thank you Amy
How often do you need to recondition..?
I gel print every week so I normally condition my plates every six to eight weeks on average.
😊
The plate won’t collect paper towel fibers?
I’ve not noticed any fibre but possibly it will depend on the brand.
Ceri, why don't you make your own gel plates?
I’d rather have a product that lasts years and doesn’t require any special storage. .
I enjoyed your video but must point out that kitchen roll is not recyclable. 😕
Isn’t it….I thought because it was paper it could be recycled, I did however buy the kitchen roll that is recycled paper to start with. Oh that’s annoying.

Baby oil does have a distinct smell, I understand.
Carrie what can I use as an alternative to what strength tissue
Some people use deli paper.
