I think it's important for people to avoid the mistake of being too cautious -- which you alluded to. What do you have to lose? Just a little paint, a half minute, and a piece of paper! Thanks!

you can also use SHARPIE marker on the gel plate!!! it works like when you do a clean up pull - you rub the paper a lot and leave it to dry and it pulls it ALL up

Speedball block printing/lino-printing ink works well too, and easy to clean up since it’s water soluble.

Thank you Keren! It takes so little paint and if you use copy paper, it is VERY inexpensive. it is a great way to practice and get used to the plate before moving on to more complex techniques.

Hello Keren. Great job explaining gel printing “errors.” It will be very helpful for those learning how much paint to use. Have you been bothered by the Canadian wildfires or are you north of the smoke? The sea breeze has kept the smoke to a minimum here. Enjoy the rest of the summer, my friend.

Great information! Thank you . Saving this for future reference. What’s your favorite paper to work on? I am ripping mine . I like to work with rice paper on occasion to have see through and I know I have to be extra gentle w it but even w copy paper I tend to rip it if I keep it on for 3 minutes and I’m using hp .

I've been on a gel plate printing RUclips binge and your channel popped up in my feed. Loved this mistakes video. I got a gel plate last week and just jumped right into playing. Of course I made mistake #1!! Luckily I figured that one out. Also, before going on my RUclips bings I totally thought mistake #5 was true -- it's only for acrylics. My mind was blown by some of the videos using all kinds of mediums. Anyway, I appreciated your video and wanted to say THANKS.

Its hard to tell if I don't know specifics of what paper you're using, what paint, how much you're applying and how long you're leaving it on. The only thing I can say is to maybe experiment with different papers, paints and times and see which works best. That's how I learned. You can try it with liquid acrylics, ink pads, heavy acrylic paints, and see which you prefer.

For everyone out there who has never done this kind of technique, BE VERY MUCH AWARE!! this is not as easy as the videos make it look. I wasted a lot of money and time and was not successful. If anything almost traumatized me and made me feel so incompetent. I am renowned for not giving up and have done complicated art to a good standard. In any case all the best of luck.

I'm sorry to hear that!! and I'm glad you didn't give up! As with any artistic technique it takes lots of practice. No art technique is easy at first. Learning how to sculpt, watercolor, paint, etc takes time and practice and so does with gel printing. This is why I made this video so it helps people like you not make the same mistakes I made when I was learning.

Curious. What type of paper and paint were you using? I make painted paper collages and I use liquid acrylics (that’s as wet as wet as the paint needs to be) and mixed media paper to get the better results. This is my favorite tool for creating visual textures. Layering is challenging so, be sure to check the transparency of the paint. Practice with tiny drops of liquid acrylics from Michaels and printer paper or…even better…newspaper. I hope this helps. Would love to see your art! Could you drop your website link or IG?

Mercedes I find that some days I struggle and quickly figure out what the problem is. I suspect your best bet is to sit with someone and do this for an hour or so if you really want to master it, because once you get the basics you can do other techniques. You really will be hooked.
