After listening to others play the op 10 Ballades, Kemp, Gieseking, Gould, et al., I put this on, and as I was dressing to go out, the beauty of his playing caught me unawares. Gads zooks, it's transcendental, as are the works! Thank you for posting this.
We throw around Mozart, Korngold, Mendelssohn as the great prodigies of all time. Now while Brahms was not as young as these folks when he composed his first piano works with opus number, for a compser of 20 years to write the Ballades and the Third Sonata, with their sage-like wisdom and the experience of decades is one of the most prodigious creative acts in music history.
@@princeandrey Yeah, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, b. 1897. Viennese composer and student of Zemlinsky. Composed large scale stage, piano and chamber works before his 14th birthday.
@@joshsussman9432 I know who Korngold is; it was strange for me to see him included in the list because, no offense, I think he's a bit of a mediocrity (IMHO), but i see what you mean.
que c'est beau ! merci
A most beautiful recording, thanks Emanuele. Katchen almost never disappoints

Thanks very much. Wonderful!
Mir gefallen Balladen 1 - 3 von Katchen sehr gut: Er ist ein echter Brahms-Markstein! Aber Nr. 4 ?
I wouldn't like to do a boxing contest with somebody with hands like that.
