Of all those US pianists of that tragically doomed generation - Fleischer, Graffmann, Kapell, Katchen - it's Katchen whose performances (for me) stay in the mind the most. His Brahms Hungarian dances, especially, have so much more exuberant panache than anyone else's (including Kissin). One of the very, very greatest.
Wow! I thought the piano was going to explode any second during the last two minutes. Nothing beats Katchen doing the Brahms F-Sharp Minor Piano Sonata though.
Hey, it's a live performance and Katchen keeps the rhythm going while opting for the grand musical gesture. Artistically it still still works very effectively, and likely in a more emotionally satisfying manner compared to if he had held back on the daring and hit all the right notes.
What for a silly fool are you ? At this speed, it's perfectly normal to butcher the score But always better is a wild butchering than a comfortable quiet tempo for your shitty ears.
He is my all time favourite pianist. If you feel it is a "kind of a mess", please bear in mind that he might have been in pain from the cancer that killed him about a year later. His Brahms is incomparable. Perhaps Leon Fleisher is a close equal, but not quite.

Dang! Katchen even looks like Schubert. He was certainly a great interpreter of this great composer's music.
Je fus surpris de me voir au premier rang, âgé de 19 ans; ces concerts des JMF étaient un moment d'intense partage entre jeunes
Made to look unbelievably easy, a genius of the keyboard.
Ooooh, a genuine storyteller telling one of my favourite stories :-)

One of the best I’ve heard! Lots of wrong notes, yes, but a true artist !
katchen le brahmsien pur ne s'en sort pas mal dans schubert mais brendel me semble inégalable dans schubert ,
Arthur Schnabel...
Phenomenon. Just a little bit nervouse (i'd like more rests....), but wondferful
Not more nervouse than other pianists, I guess...! This sudden accelerandi he makes it in his studio recordings too.
La registrazione è penosa. Xchè tutto quel pedale? Comunque è una interpretazione importante
Adagio 5:44
15:13 why did he have to butcher that part
Nishant Modak otherwise ok?
@@paradiddleday yes but it seems odd he would choose such a fast tempo when he knows he's gonna play so many wrong notes.

Why did he die by a brain tumor ? .... and at a very young age. Too much notes in his head .......... ?
wonder how he was involved with the rolling stones in rock & roll circus
Kathleen one of my favorites, forget wrong notes……BUT he misses the mark here. KInd of a mess.
