  • Alfred Cortot in 4 recordings of Chopin's Etude Op. 10 No. 3; recordings from 1933, 1942, 1951 and 1952. I find it very interesting to hear the similarities as well as the differences between the various interpretations.

This is wonderful, the best posting I've heard in a while. Thank you. And thank Cortot, a pianist whose playing is so wonderful and so personal that we recognize his sound, his rubato, his tone. And these are all things that are in short supply, now. The progression from the relatively chaste 1933 version to the full bath of the 1952 version is like polishing a star sapphire, the star doesn't shine through until the final steps toward perfection. Bravo!

I heard Cortot when I was a young student in the 70h. And I was stunned on this clear and fine musicality this great musician had in his soul! I still love his recordings!

Cortot for the Etudes and Préludes ; Arrau and Pollini for the Nocturnes ; François for the Valses ; Zimerman for the Ballades ; anyone you like for the Mazurkas. Mount Olympus of Chopin interpreters.
