- Last year I did a requested series focussing on playing Steve's parts from the In The Round concert, so this year I am following up with a series on Phil's. For any new subscribers I have gained in the last couple of years, I used to mainly upload Def Leppard content. From 2011 - 2017, I uploaded covers of pretty much the whole main discography, minus the Yeah! album and a couple of acoustic tracks (You can find here - ruclips.net/user/pl.... Looking back, naturally I think every video can be improved on, especially video quality wise. I always find I hear new things over time too and start realising that certain parts can be played differently and maybe more accurately. So I always like the opportunity to correct anything from a video that is numerous years old.
So, I tried to mimic how Phil would finger the solo here, which is quite different to Steve and this cover also gave me the opportunity to show what else he does at the end, just before the 'U2' bit. :)

I use a Jackson DK2 into a Boss Me50 into a Palmer Pdi-09 into a Focusrite Scarlett into my computer running Logic Pro X.

I love how Steve and Phil’s parts make the song just pop, I remember Phil saying they never wanted to play the same guitar parts because it would sound boring.

As said in the Steve Clark cover: Best version ever... I was in the seventh row, the first part of the Hysteria Tour, and the 14th, the second go round at the Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, NJ. Can't get enough of this version.

This song is always a treat live however the HYSTERIA and ADRENALIZE tours had this song at another level. TLFL into this is up there with GOW and DHTH as the best 1-2 punch for me, and this show had both! Flawless playing as always!

Great. Just found this channel. Former music teacher who loves music. Which for me does NOT mean crazy, technical shredding but putting each instruments strengths to a sum of all parts. Then true magic of music come alive. Thanks.
Thanks! My favourite covers are usually the ones where the guitar is providing some cool, ambient, session style work. Usually stuff from Michael Landau, Jay Graydon, Dann Huff, Steve Lukather type work. But I do enjoy the odd shred every now and then.
It's weird but I love that this video lets me hear Steve's part so well, because I can see what he's not playing.

I always thought that Phil and Steve both used a fernandes sustainer but seeing your videos and achieving the same sound makes me wonder that I might have been wrong!

Thanks for the kind words! Phil only started using a sustainer in the 90’s and Steve didn’t have any on his touring guitars. In the studio they would use Ebows. Also, with natural and pinch harmonics, you can simulate the effects of an amp feeding back, which is what a sustainer sounds like.

Another bad night at work, I come home and put on RUclips before going to sleep and what do I see? Another great cover from bwm5150... I can now sleep peacefully. I really like your guitars. I have a Les Paul and Ibanez Jem but looking at buying either a charvel or a Jackson. Do you have a preference out of the 2 you have?

Having both Steve and Phil on guitar is an embarrassment of riches for a band.
Good thing I have two phones and two sets of AirPods. One phone & AirPod can play Steve’s video and the other can play Phil’s. Just need to find a good sync mark 😮

The clean tone sounds a lot like the Tom Scholz Rockman tone they used to make the demos (and maybe lay down some of the album takes?)
How would Phil switch from clean to distortion in those days, was it a pedalboard with effects or maybe someone switching his rack gear backstage?

It is…
If I have a single criticism to make is that your natural vibrato is too small and fast. This song is good because some of the vibrato is so slow you are forced to slow it down to match the original sound, but your "natural" way of doing vibrato is the only thing I'd wish you'd work on, because every thing else man, you've got it down to perfection !
It's always been a weakness of mine and something I try to work on. Please don't ever think I'm sitting here thinking I am flawless, I am far from that and know ever single flaw. But these vids aren't really to show off, they are just for referencing how to play these songs.

Yes, although you could argue the biggest change was from this tour to the Adrenalize one.

@@bwm5150 YES!!! It was a huge change. Phil no longer plays his original guitar parts Viv does because he took over Steve’s lead guitar parts. Been that way since Adrenalized.

I took out the tone and moved the volume over as i kept hitting it when playing.
