Def Leppard - Hysteria - Live 'In The Round' (Steve Clark - Guitar Cover)

- Part 5 of my series dedicated to showing Steve's parts on the In The Round concert release from the Hysteria tour. My original Hysteria Live cover from 8 years ago has always been my most viewed video. In that one, I play a mixture of the album variations as well as of course the live variations of both Phil and Steve. This was interesting to look back on and solely focus on Steve, even trying to capture his exact fingerings and whammy usage, which made me learn a few new things that I didn't get right the first time around. I used some of the Mountain View performance footage as well to have another reference for parts but even that performance has its subtle differences too.
For any new subscribers I have gained in the last couple of years, I used to mainly upload Def Leppard content. From 2011 - 2017, I uploaded covers of pretty much the whole main discography, minus the Yeah! album and a couple of acoustic tracks (You can find here - ruclips.net/user/pl.... Looking back, naturally I think every video can be improved on, especially video quality wise. I always find I hear new things over time too and start realising that certain parts can be played differently and maybe more accurately. So I always like the opportunity to correct anything from a video that is numerous years old. Plus, I really love playing this stuff and Steve is one of, if not, my favourite guitarist.
This series will be in addition to my regular uploading too, so if you never enjoyed my Def Leppard stuff, just hang about a couple more days, cheers!

I have a Patreon where I upload my notation notes for all my new covers and I am going through my old ones too. But I also provide custom notation and video lessons content there or at my bwmguitarlessons@gmail.com address. Please get in touch if you want help playing the music you love. / bwm5150

Hi mate been trying to get this solo right for ages do u have a tab or lesson for this.
@@robertsheasby2147 Yeah, the link above goes to a tab I have on my Patreon for Steve's part. I have another for Phil's too.
@@bwm5150 Can you provide the settings on your pedals?
It's sad that they don't play this version anymore. This was the best version of Hysteria.
is there any particular reason why they don't?
@@keithkarp Because of Steve's parts. RIP
They did play this version at Newport Centre on their Euphoria tour. Its by far my favourite version and i went mad when the bass line started. Tiny venue though.
I agree, the ending is amazing. It’s one of those few songs that give you the sense that the band don’t want it to stop. They just keep playing that last sequence over and over and it just capsulates you to another world of mesmeration. Brilliant 👍
I could listen to the beginning of that song on repeat for forever
best cover i've heard !!
The harmonic's in the beginning always gives me goosebumps. Great playing.
So agree on the harmonics. This whole album gives me goosebumps. Big fan since 1983.
Me Too!
I feel blessed to have heard this. To hear my favorite parts of the song isolated like this. All those little touches Steve added to really make it magical. So few "hear" the magic that was always present and thus, his contributions went unheard to so many.
Thank you for this. That intro kills me every time.
The ONLY song in my entire life that I could never get tired of hearing!!!! ❤️❤️🤘
I listen to it everyday!
My fave song from them. I remember listening to this song on my ship in the Navy over n over. Cassette...but got the cd.
I still sing along to this song in the car and it's now 2023....
Goose bumps, everytime I hear that intro!
by far their best song and one of the best of all time
Steve made this track. His ability and harmonisation was like no other. All from the heart. There's no one like him from the 80s.
Thanks for keeping Steve "Steamin" Clark alive.
This is awesomeness Ben!!! So cool to see you just play only Steve’s parts from that ITR concert. Flawless!! 🎸 Hysteria is one of my favorite Def Leppard songs so this was so cool to watch/hear you play! Thanks!! 🤓
If Steve Clark had a child with Lorilei and that child inherited Steves guitar playing abilities..no doubt itd be you!!
This is my all time favorite version of this song and you ABSOLUTELY NAILED IT!!!! Major respect for you in terms of putting in this level of detail and nuance with the whammy bar and vibrato to pay homage to Steve Clark! From a fellow guitarist and Def Leppard fan - well done, sir!
Kenyon Denning
Omg you absolutely nailed the heart felt feel of that song, that is exactly how I wish I could play that song and the memories and remembrance of that sound is 100 percent. Perfect job.
Your one of the few people who can pull off these amazing covers of Steve’s parts great cover man 🤘😎
Very kind, thanks!
@@bwm5150 your welcome
I grew up with Def Leppard and still always on my playlist at 53 years old. Really enjoy listening and watching. 👍🤘🤘
@@markjohnston6080 Same ...
These tunes never get old even though we do...
@@markjohnston6080Right there with you. First heard them when I was 8. 42 years later I’m always so grateful these never broke up. So many shows I’ve been able to go to. I’ve never had heroes- I’ve always had Def Leppard.
Steve Clark is my favorite Musician of all time. I miss him dearly. I think Steve would enjoy your videos if he were still alive. I miss the old way Def Leppard played Hysteria. I miss that intro. I really love that you honor Steve so much its really cool. Steve is my hero and I love him so much.
So true.
I feel the same, Watching him preform is such a delight, thrill, goose bumps still!
Indeed he would!
Steve Clark would be proud of you...
btw, this live intro is so beautiful
Very kind Mafaka, thank you! I'm always learning new things with Steve's work and always want to be as accurate as possible. I agree, this intro is always my favourite.
@@bwm5150 Love Your Videos Dude. !!! Been Watching You A lot. Man. You. Are Fantastic !!!!!!
Yes absolutely, best intro ever.
Fantastic reproduction! Steve definitely has a smile on his face hearing that!! Well done, sir!! 🎸👍🎸👍
This version of the song and Steve's part in particular is HUGELY underrated. I really can't emphasis enough how much different this song feels live after Steve was no longer with the band. There was a soulful simplicity in everything he did. He was the perfect counterbalance to Phil.
By far...by far my favorite version of this song. Better than the album version and any other live version I have heard.
FANTABULOUS! one of my favourite leppard songs.
That gig is one of the best I've ever seen. 🤟
watched this twice before commenting
Love this!
Absolutely beautiful
I must say, as def Leppard diehard fans,... YOU NAIL IT BRO!!!
Thanks! Be sure to check out my other vids as I’ve been covering Def Leppard since 2012.
That tone is getting better, and it was already amazing before, this sounds brilliant
Haha, thanks, I think I just know how to mix it a bit better with the track than a few years ago.
@@bwm5150whoever you are mate, you nailed it
Fully channelling Steve Clark via that whammy bar! Beautiful work Ben!
2 years later this performance still blows my mind. Losing my job and taking a break from looking for a job. This album came out when I was in high school. Great memories. My girlfriend at the time was such an amazing and genuine person. Great memories. Thank you. I hope you are still playing.
Who in their right mind gives this thumbs down...obviously isn't a leppard fan nor clark fan
Amazing cover dude...what a perfect tone.
Def Leppard has been in my life for 40 years. I was turned on to their music by my sister who bought Pyromania. It was in 1987 that she bought me Hysteria. Since then, this band is a part of my life that is almost unexplainable. When I am down or lost in my life, I come back to them. I feel like their music is home. Thank you for these videos and your love for the band. I feel nothing but joy anytime I come across your channel or videos.
Thanks for the kind words and for sharing your relationship with the band. You, along with a couple other channels, helped me hear and discover many new things. In fact, I used your bootleg of this show to double-check on what Steve and Phil were actually playing. So thanks! 😁
Me too
The cool thing about Def Leppard is their unique sound that's truly their own. Hearing this brings back great memories of my teenage years. Awesome work as always! Man that tone 👍
In one word "Boston"
What a beautiful cover. Well played!
Nobody in their right mind would dislike how beautiful this really is. Thank you so much. I am subscribed. Now, I can finally learn it!
This is my first listening to Def Leppard 😀 And.... I lost my word.
Just one thing I thought.
Steve Clark.... Is there anyone who is better at playing the guitar than you?
Is it bad if I'd rather see you play than Phil? I feel bad, but I know the playing ....
Just amazing. Wow.
I'm here again! I couldn't do anything but to smile and feel good while watching your hands Sir.
I really really love Steve and his riffs. Thank you so much for this beautiful cover!
I'm soooooo excited that a cover of just Steve Clark's guitar section was done. Ur playing and tone was Spot on bro🤙🇺🇸🙏
Unfucking real🤘 Ben, you might be the second coming of Steve. Love your playing!
That tone is absurd.
Words cannot explain what it feels when heard this emotional, wonderful, amazing song....and you made it shine a little bit more.....thank you.
The beginning sounds so identical that I couldn't tell at first, that's how good this cover is. Bravo.
Fantastic! Your Def Leppard, KISS, and Journey covers are the best on RUclips! Great job!
Very kind, thanks Johan!
I miss you Ben for these last two weeks but you truly made up for it my king from Scotland🤴👍 I really enjoyed this video 🎸🎧 awesome job your journey fan always🌹
I have sung this privately for so long. And to now hear Steve's part, wow. Joe had one of the greatest guitarists behind him!
It’s funny…as a kid I used to skip over Hysteria so I could get to pour some sugar, or Animal…I just didn’t ’get it’ at the time. Over the years it has actually become my absolute favorite song ever, and this version just puts me in a mood I never want to leave. Thanks!! 😇
Please send me a greeting to San Luis Potosí México ! Thank You!
Thanks from Scotland 🏴
So beautiful! Absolutely flawless! Steve Clark would be so proud!!!!
Love this song and your covers…this tone its so close …and your technique….chapeau!!!! Congrats my friend.
Doing our Sheffield band proud 😍 anyone who can play this as well as the real thing is also a lej in my eyes.
It's cool to see this video. To me, Steve Clark never got the attention or credit he deserves for his talent. Live, his guitar sound was huge. RIP Steve. We love you.
Noone plays Def Leppard as well you do that is so true to the band's tone and emotion (other than Phil and Vivian).
Very kind Tom, thanks!
Collen, Campbell, Schon, Sykes .....whomever he plays, he always nails the tone.
I love listening to you play and could watch and listen all day long. Simply mesmerizing. I do have a request, if I may. I would love to hear you do “More Than A Feeling” by Boston. You’d slay that classic and I’m intrigued by what it would sound like. BTW, also love the variety of music that you do as well. 👍
Thanks for the kind words! That’s certainly a track I’ll be covering at some point.
Reminds me of Paul. R.I.P.Big man. Excellent as always buddy 🎶🎸🎶
Me too man, miss playing this one especially as well.
@@bwm5150 yeah it was getting there. Complimenting the harmonics with the cymbal bell hits sounded great 💖🎶👍
Totally agree the harmonics are just superb 🤟🏻🎸 Learning this one currently. Im such a D leppard fan . You play so well I’m two years in hoping another 12yrs and ill be playing like this 👊🏻🎸
Great job!👍could you possibly play after the rain by Nelson... thanks Bro!!!
I just love your tone. It’s consistently amazing! If I join your patreon I can access your tabs, yes?
Thanks! Yes, you get access to all my tuition material that I've been putting on there since 2019.
@@bwm5150 are the tabs in guitar tablature? (6 lines, w/numbers representing the note)
@@benbatz382 both guitar tab and proper music rhythm notation
So glad you are doing these times again! I have always loved the Def Leppard hooks. I remember listening to alot of Hysteria tunes being played on an awesome sound system at a local venue back then.
Badass!! I can totally imagine Steve rockin' out.
Almost identical to his performance that night. Tone and all. I love that note at the end of the solo. Never caught it before. And I thought I heard an accidental note in the beginning of the song. Are you human after all? Lol. Great, great work.
Steve Clark is definitely smiling upon you my friend!
Def Leppard has some of the most beautifull guitar parts, Hysteria is easily my fave of theirs, i love how Phil Collen plays it now, as always this was amazing by you to.
I beg to differ, Phil’s use of the sustainer really takes the soul out of this song.
@bob proctor I’m very familiar with the guitar parts on Hysteria, no hate towards Phil. I just prefer the way Steve played Hysteria live and even when Phil took over Steve’s parts during the Adrenalize tour.
@@nookbandit i prefer the pre-sustainor days also, but it’s pretty cool to see how a song can develop live over time.
@bob proctor some are Sav too, don’t forget
@@bwm5150 lol when it’s been played for so long I like the fact that they’re still tweaking their work, when they start a new tour I always look for slight tweaks. They at least still care and it shows from tour to tour
You are, in one word... amazing!!! I am so glad I found your channel! 🥰
Nice. From Russia with LOVE ❤️💙♥️
Steve Clark was a melodic genius!
It's not a hyperbolic statement to say that Steve is channeled through your playing Ben. You don't play an adaptation of his playing.. you play his playing!
Very kind of you to think Kev, thanks
RIP Steve Clark. He did most of the song writing etc etc and made that band. He is and always will be Def Leppard ❤️
Very good information of STEVE CLARK ,,,DEF LEPPARD FOREVER
This is a fitting tribute to an amazing guitarist, who would be proud of you Ben, keep up the good work 🙂
La guitarra esta apagada😁😁, lo que se oye es el cd😂😂

Always epic and insightful covers! Thank you again.
I have a song request for you to cover, if you're ever willing to take a stab at it.
I'd love to see you cover Giant "I'll See You In My Dreams" from their album "Last of the Runaways."
Cheers!
Maybe one day, thanks!
I'm goin back and listening to all your covers again. I've been the biggest Def Leppard fan since day one. Always nice to hear someone playing that can capture the tone and feel of Steve Clark or Phil Collen. Not an easy feat to do it accurately. I have a Jackson PC1 Phil Collen signature series. Love that infinite sustain switch!
steve is still with us in you , thank you . very well done !
Very kind, I can only imitate what he’s already done.
@bwm5150 I saw def lepperd in August 8 2023 in Columbus ohio at the ohio state football stadium 🏟 rock on 🤘 dude
Love that fucking tone! Bravo mate!
Really you should just change your name to Dr. Leppard 😄 You are THE professor of Def Leppard.
I almost cry at this performance
That was fucking awesome... take a bow sir..
Photograph, heaven , love and hate arent bad ether ....
Love this entire series, but I think this is my favorite by far!! Superb!! Definitely going to be bumping to this regularly
The thing with Steve is that he plays the album version in one way along with Phil (Phil's book), when it comes to live, they used to speed up the songs and steve's playing changed show to show. Subtle changes that only hardcore fans can catch. He hardly moves his fingers on the left hand and still plays these complex rhythms, which is beyond me. Weird guitar strapping too low, dancing on the stage and still playing these...Common mate!!!!
This series is absolutely fantastic!
Some of Steve’s greatest work!!! RIP. Gone way too soon! 😢
"Muscle memory". When you can do things without actually have to think about it. There is only one way to get it. Practice. Do it 23 hours a day then let the world hear the last hour. You have one life. Kick some ass along the way and show them what you're made of.
I feel breaks are necessary to implement muscle memory. Too much practice in a short time can be overkill.
I could literally watch u play all day!! So entertaining & enjoyable 🤘🤘🤘🌟
FROM THE LEPPARD ONE OF THE NEJOR GROUPS OF HARD ROCK OF THE 80. THERE WAS A LOT OF GOOD MUDIC IN THE 80 AND 9THIR THANKS. ADEMAS ALSO APPREAD TO TO TO TOUCH THESE XANCIONS OVERCOME YOUR VIDEOS .😀😀😃😃😃😃
I wish that someday Def Leppard will perform this song again in concert with Joe playing guitar also like he did during this tour, so there can be three guitar parts live as there are on the studio version.
Where’s the curly cord for the headphones? Lol
I’m taking more care to keep it out of frame to stop the comments about it but I guess that doesn’t work 😅
Man if anything ever happens to phil or viv your def the one to call 🤟🤟
👍
Sooooo Beautiful!!!
Best version ever... I was in the seventh row, the first part of the Hysteria Tour, and the 14th, the second go round at the Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, NJ. Can't get enough of this version.
Wow, you were there. Amazing!
This version always gives me goosebumps. Stay awesome.👍❤From Down Under🇦🇺
My favorite song. Period. Thank you for this
Love from Ukraine 🇺🇦 ❤❤❤
Exquisite as always!! Awesome performance and a killer sound mate!!
I have a Def Leppard Tribute Band in Montreal and we play this version Live . Great job especially the riff ..
So amazingly played. The tonality from your hands is just so on point.
Still one of the best versions of this song... the epitome of a great 80s melodic love track. Takes me back to being a teen.

The most DefLeppard song ever!!! great cover !!!
New subscriber. I love this artist. Just watched the Steve Stevens solo also. I'm just getting back into guitar after.10y break. His fingering is so clear to hopefully copy lol.
