It would be great if people could listen to a performance like this without prejudice. To say Beck OWNS this or that is just childish. I love the Jeff Beck version but I am stillI astonished at the beauty and passion of this rendition. Their interpretation is exquisite. The phrasing, tone and thoughtfulness is brilliant. It's a masterful performance, by Larry and Steve, of this gorgeous song . Music is not a competition. There are many ways to interpret a great melody. This is one of them.
For those who say it's Jeff's song, they need to listen to Syreeta's version. Recorded before Jeff's, it was the inspiration for Jeff to even do the song.
I love music. Stevie Wonder writes a great song, like a lamp post on a Christmas night, snow falling. Jeff Beck gives it a kiss and takes it into The Wood Between The Worlds and turns it into the most beautiful piece of electric guitar music of all time. Steve and Larry take it for a walk through the back of a wardrobe and end up in Narnia. Music is a gift that keeps on giving, and giving.
@@danodonnell7218 Yeah really cool extended metaphor. Beck does take an idea and live in it so to speak. He extends it by his experience in it. He is the most visceral guitarist by far. All feel and improvisation. I love his playing and I have done since 91 when I was 17 and I was a passenger driving across France on Holiday and I had Jeff Becks Guitar shop and Wired on the same Tape. I also had Van halen 1984 Night Ranger Dawn Patrol and Yingvie Malmsteen Rising Force and Tony MacAlpine Edge of insanity. , Vai Flexable and Al Di Meola Casino. That last one ended up being one of favourite albums along with Wired. Soon after that I realised I was into the deeply uncool world of jazz fusion. Didn't give a fuck. Sounded good to me. For those who don't know, the original version of this song is a vocal rendition by Stevie Wonder's first wife, Syreeta (RIP) in 1974. It's also quite beautiful.
You are absolutely correct! And here are the lyrics to the song when she sang it... Metta: I don't like "this guy is better than this guy" crap, but I do have to admit this is how I feel about this particular song and the performances in question. This video demonstrates how an amazing, generational composition sounds in the hands of 2 incredibly amazing, extraordinarily talented, elite players. Beck's version(s) show how that same song sounds in the hands of a genuine musical genius.
Wish I could thumbs up your comment 100 times. JB version for mine is the only version. Forever. My wedding song, my funeral song, the birth of my children song. Not a bad version though
as a musician, I know the feeling of a performance that even transcends ones own expectations. This version is not an 'every night' kind of performance. It was magical!
It's an incredible tribute to Jeff Beck to have somebody of the caliber of Larry Carlton and Steve Lukather playing a song he made famous. The reason Jeff, Larry, and Steve are all who they are is because instead of sitting around having a musical peeing contest they were actually getting better and not having idiotic arguments like most of the "experts" that you've never heard of do.
Goddd ohhhh dear God I am in tears, such a beautiful rendition by two master virtuosos playing from the very deepest bottom of their souls. I can't help but listen and let my tears flow...
I love how while hearing Larry Carlton's run at 5:13 I just knew that he would finish it in an unexpected, distinctively Carlton way. And lo and behold rather than hitting that big bend you'd expect to close off this kind of run he does a half step bend into a bluesy lick. He always does things just a bit different than anyone else.
Well, this is great music played by musicians of high quality. They are friends and respect each has a life experience. Each one thinks one way and feel the music of a very particular way. So I do not think there is competition but cooperation!
100% agreed, each note Carlton plays makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck because of the anticipation and also he is quite unpredictable...LOVE his string bends, very unorthodox but totally singable. Just phenomenal.
No idea why so many negative comments - and now 11 yrs later, they sure haven't aged well. I;m just happy to find such a great rendition and I'm sure there was nothing but love n respect for Jeff at this time. Its well know that Luke and JB were good friends. My god people just appreciate 2 of the best player we (still) have playing their guts out...
This intro is quite possibly the best thing I've ever heard and experienced. When it comes to a guitar performance. I need more of this in my life. Fantastic b
This was fucking great! There is no competition here - just two guitar player’s interpretations of a great song, backed by an exceptional rhythm section. We are lucky to get to see and hear this. A big thank you to the band!
Only two geniuses can pull that off. I'm sure JB is pleased. JB does make it sound like two guitars are playing at the same time. Hats off to all these 3 gifted visionaries and masters! Como e bom tocar um instrumento. How good it is to play an instrument!
Beck's "Blow By Blow" album was an rock instrumental icon...other rock instrumentalists were inspired by this album from Ronnie Montrose to Joe Satriani to Steve Vai and many others....these two were inspired as well. Just my humble opinion.
Words are faint shadows compared to the content and clock speed and intensity of music. The emotional content of these wonderful chords, the nuances of these screams, the restraint, the... add up to the finest poetry.

G W - check out the Ritenour / Luke version of this from 1990 - more consistent approach - both players shred it - Rit is a guitar god, but Luke's vibrato and bends just stand out for me here and pretty much everywhere he has played (solo from 1978's Hold the Line was like nothing else on the radio at the time)...and Carlton played this beautifully.

Two of my favorite guitarists, but still seems they have to be two to simulate what one, the greatest guitarist in the world who recently passed (RIP Jeff) could do with the greatest of ease blindfolded. No disrespect to Larry or Steve, Jeff Beck was simply another breed of guitarist.
Stevie Wonder and Jeff Beck worked together a lot back in the day. Carlton is one of the all time greats, incredible phrasing- Mr. 335 and Lukether is brilliant. One must learn to appreciate well crafted covers. Jeff Beck covered this song he did not write it or record it first.

Sneaking kisses in the hall
Parting love notes are on the wall
Been each other's all and all each day
Lovers walking in the rain
So close we felt each other's pain
But now you say that love has died away
'Cause we've ended now as lovers
Doesn't mean that we each other can't be friends
'Cause we've ended now as lovers
Does our love for one another have to end
I remember teaching you
On piano 'Tea for Two'
And how playing it wrong I kissed your hand
But when our love has gone and passed
Why does the good exceed the bad
Well that's one thing I'll never understand
'Cause I remember us at class
You were always the one to pass
And gave me answers right to see me through
But that was more than years ago
And who will love me I don't know
It's sad for sure but true it won't be you
