- Опубликовано: 26 авг 2017
- I recently got my hands on a rotary tool, so I decided to try some glass engraving. It turned out to be easier than I expected and I’m very happy with the results. In this video I go over the materials you need and tips and tricks for getting the best results.
What you’ll need:
- Rotary tool (like a Dremel)
- Diamond coated bits (at least a ball-shaped one)
- Poster tacks
- Printout of the design
- Tape
- Wet cloth and a bowl of water
- Towel
- Dust mask
- Safety glasses
If you make one of your own, I'd love to see it! Send me a picture on Instagram :)

Even though my videos are set up as tutorials, I'm not professionally trained in any of these crafts. The tools that I use can be dangerous. Don't try a craft if you are unfamiliar with the tools and the necessary safety precautions. Be safe!
I appreciate how you practice first and show us. Others act as if they're perfect from the get-go. And practicing teaches alot.
Your bits would last a lot longer if you lubricate them. You can use either a water drip system (ONLY IF YOU'RE USING A FLEX SHAFT) or glass cutting oil.
It'll also cut down a lot on glass dust. You should still wear a mask and glasses, but it'll cut down on the amount of glass dust in your workspace.
Thank you for doing as much actual demonstrating as explaining! It helps visual learners a lot!
I'm about to start messing with glass engraving for the first time, and no lie... I chose your video first because I saw the TARDIS 😹😻👍
Excellent and easy to follow video. Many thanks. Enabled me to engrave sentimental mug from my grandfather RIP 1960. Much appreciated.
Hey Ellen, good job. One tip if you don't mind. When you put the paper inside the glass, put black cloths inside for 2 reasons. Less vibrations on the glass and that the paper remains flat to the inner surface. Where it comes to neck bottles, attach the paper to the glass and use a pointed bit to trace over the paper.
Awesome. As I've gotten older I've found "let the tool do the work" to be excellent advice no matter the task.
that's what my wife says before telling me to do all the chores. i thought she was giving me a friendly pointer. i didn't realize she was talking about me the whole time! *boomer audience laughter*
I'm so glad that I found you! I just won a rotary tool workshop and you make it look so simple and I'll be watching your future videos!
LOVE that you did a TARDIS
Wow! I’m surprised how easy it looks to do and outcome is very nice. Will try myself, now waiting for dremel tool. This video made my day.
You seem to be a sweet and humble person.. so with your talent and with that 2 gifts that i write.. you got here one more subscrived! Thank you and sorry about my english! 😊✌
It's funny that the tree you free handed came out better than the police box you traced. The tree almost looks like a machine did it. Very good job!
Wow - I use my Dremel for wood carving. Can’t wait to have a go on glass. Think I know what I’m going to make for Christmas presents 😊
Thank You SO much for making this video. I am a newbie and I get frustrated when videos are made for people that already know a lot !
The tree is beautiful! ❤ I'm going out tonight to buy my first rotary tool. Your video helped me know what bit to start with. Thanks! 🙂
Wow, that tree turned out wonderful!
Great little vid. I'm a welder by trade and have a dremel and was looking for something to make I hadn't done before, so now, I'll make a steel wine rack with some engraved glasses I think. Cheers!
Thanks for the excellent tutorial! I'm planning a Christmas present involving frosting/etching glass and I was really fretting being able to do it myself with my Dremel tool. After watching this I feel confident I can pull it off! Thank you!
Fabulous well done ! I am a calligrapher wanting to try this. Good advice. Thank you.
Nice video, love the T-shirt (Laura is awesome!) But just a small piece of advice: you want to hang the dremel, preferably above table level so that the FlexiShaft doesn't break or cause damage to the Dremel itself.
+Ralph Nabhan Thanks Ralph. I did consider hanging the dremel, mostly to give me more freedom in movement, but couldn't find a good way to do it. Didn't know it also affected the dremel itself. I'll make sure to hang it next time :)
The tree is beautiful!
That was very helpful Ellen, I'm always intimidated by etching. I must remember you said let the tool do the work. Thank you! Happy new year
your a pretty good artist i can see you have a knack for it . tip i do alot of wood carving with a power rotary carver its like a dremel in every way just bigger . when you did the tree at the end if you got some spray adhesive you could glue the picture on there with spray adhesive then scrap off the left over paper or even just wash it off . and you would not have to free hand anything . i do that sometimes or use carbon paper again i work with wood not glass . i have seen a couple home made set ups using a 2 liter bottle plastic of course with a hole in it as well with water the water comes out the hole and pores onto the glass to keep the dust down you dont want glass dust in your eyes or lungs young lady . and i would use goggles over them safty glasses dust will find any open area it can and get in your eyes . just tips you dont have to use them if you dont want to good luck with your projects dear .
Well if no one else says it . I will .... Thanks for your comments ... Nice of you to go to the trouble of sharing your experience and most practical advice ☘️
@@tixilx thank you very much .
Sounds like a great tip. I imagine glass dust in your eye could do a lot of damage. Thanks diy dark matter!
@@HeyWatchMeGo your welcome
Can you explain this setup? I’m not getting it
Love this. J just bought an engraver and realized I can use my dremel instead
THANKU, easy to understand EXCELLENT TUTORIAL VIDEO
Brilliant! Thanks for the inspiration
The tardis came out great. I’ve been nervous to etch glass but not anymore thanks to you.
First class instructor and demo.
Wow, that tree turned out amazing!
Thanks for taking the time to post this tutorial. I really enjoyed it. I am going to play with my dremel now. I am not as intimidated by it now as I was!!
That's awesome! I'm glad I could help :D
thanks a lot , you are a great artist, well done
nice work :) ONE POINT i dont know if you have had any Glass break when working on it ! a Simple simple trick that stops the glass from breaking is to put a cloth or tea towl inside to stop the glass breaking
+FireFly Good tip, thanks! I didn't have anything break, but that will definitely help prevent it.
glad you like the tip i do Engrave Glass of all sorts of things i have had a few thinks break on me because the vibration of the engraver can Oscillate the glass to a point that it can shatter so for a long time i have used a rolled up Cloth and put it inside the Glass the cloth needs to be a little tight so it covers most of the Glass to stop it falling out and to touch most of the inside the glass if the glass you are working on is flat a peace of felt under it damp down any Oscillation hope that helps i like the work you do BUT it only take 1 glass to Shatter you do a lot of damage to your hand or face
Thanks for that tip. I plan to start and that is awesome to know
....... couldn't you just wet your work as your going?
@Mighty Guyunderrated comment lol
Thank you, great video- Rick in the UK
Very impressive. Thank you for an excellent introduction.
Laura Kamph!! - another very talented lady!!
Gotta love a TARDIS glass!

That's the literally the whole reason I clicked on this video, out of all the videos that came up
The poster putty is a great idea.

starting glass sketching for first time.
Lots of love and support from India.
Thx for the tips I just got one for Xmas! 😊
Your tutorial is great for a beginner like me thank you.
Cool! I ordered my "dremel" for metal work mostly and didn't even realize it could be used to ingrave glass. That will be fun for my homebrew! :)
Great instructive video, emphasis on SAFETY and potential hazards. Use of protective equipment. I am just starting, projects to do for $pare change and gifts. Busy during RETIREMENT !! GREAT VIDEO and I've subscribed. Thank you.
Ellen, that tree was gorgeous!!!
Ellen, I loved it! You made it plain and simple, nothing to be scared about. Nice to know which tips to use as you were engraving too. Just super, keep them coming. --Joe
Thank you Joe! Glad you liked it :)
Thanks much . . . Just what I needed to know!
Absolutely love your tutorial. Looking forward to more!
Thank you, have jus5 bought my first Drexel to try glass engraving and found this really helpful 😊
i just bought the tool and i thought it would be more difficult to use it, but seeing you looks easy.
You are the first video that warns folks to wear a mask and glasses when doing glass work good for you. You dont want to breathe in glass duct .
Loved the video! To the point, packed with useful tips and not too long for those of us with a.d.d! Lol
Thanks,
Thank you, this is so helpful for this newbie.
Nice work. Thank you for shareing this video with us. I really like how you implamented the stencil pattern on the glass.
Thanks this was helpful, I am etching glass for all of my family for Yule and using them to make etched picture frame mirrors. I thought I could use my dremel for it, but wanted to make sure, and you've helped alot.
Nice work! And well guided. Thank you!
THANKU, EXCELLENT TUTORIAL VIDEO.

Very cool I have a dremel and only use it to cut nails off now i have a second use for it thanks for sharing!
Joe Basement Woodworking & DIY wtf
This is great thanks!
Pretty cool
Thank you so much! This is exactly what I needed.
Hi Ellen! Nice video, thanks for sharing your work. I will definitely start trying out these methods, as I've had my Dremel extension for quite a long time and I've actually never used it (nor have I ever engraved anything using the Dremel). I'd like to cut used beer/wine bottles and then engrave them to give them out as gifts. Your tree looked really good by the way :)
Really cool... going to give it a try!
You help me so much
Thank you
Thank you for making this project video. I've been intimidated to work with glass like this, but now I want to test it out. Nice work!
+Works by Solo Thanks! I was a bit intimidated as well but it turned to be much easier than I expected. You only need to touch the glass very lightly, so it's basically just like drawing. Hope you give it a go!
Thank you so much!!
We recently we're able to play with a Dremel micro, it was pretty easy to handle and I think it would work well for a project like this too! Nice tutorial, Ellen.
Yeah, the micro would work great for this I think. I've never used it, but it should be much easier to handle than the bigger Dremels. My flexible extension gets the job done, but being cordless like with the micro would be awesome. Thanks for sharing :)
nice and easy to follow, thanks Ellen.
Excellent explanations,thank you!!
Thank You, Ellen! I got some inspiration from your videos...
this was helpful, spot on, and kept nice and short. there really isnt that much to engraving/etching glass with a rotary tool.
i think the word etching is more appropriate, though, when looking at in intricacy of "proper" engraving.
Great video
Helpful...thank you♥️
Thanks for your video you have shared, it is really encouraging me.
thanks so much great video
Keel as All Get Out! I loved this Video!
wow, that looks really cool! i might have to give it a try! great video!
+Kata Fu Thanks you! It's a fun project to do, I hope you give it a go :)
Love that beautiful tree!
This was cool
You are amazing and a good teacher, definitely in my top three and will return for sure as well as follow you on Facebook. The Tardis will be my first attempt at this. I like Dr Who and I'm hoping to end up with something at least resembling the telephone box.. Thanks again for the great lesson.
Thank you Craig! Have fun!!
Wow super cool!
Love!!!!!! Thank you
Thank you ,excited to get started
Thank you Ellen for this wonderful tutorial; a quick question: are there any differences/gotchas when working on say Pyrex vs regular glass vs. crystal? ... many thanks in advance Madame!
Thanks for sharing and awesome work. Question? what's the name of the finishing bit?
Leuk!
