I was an offficial at then Norwalk Raceway Park working the "water box" as we called it.I sprayed the water there so the cars could do their burnouts.I also brought the cars up from the stating lanes and I was the one to signal them to start their burnouts.I tell you. There's nothing like being in between to top fuel dragsters as they launch off the line. You hear it,even with ear protection, and you feel the ground shake, your body vibrate and the smell of nitro and the burn of the eyes. What an experience.
I had the absolute pleasure of my truck being tow vehicle for Harry Schmidt's "Blue Max" Mustang Funny Car one night at US 131 Dragway in Martin MI. in 1972 and I remember Don Garlits racing his new rear engine Top Fuel car, the Swamp Rat XIV, in 1971. You're right, ain't nothing like being down in the traps getting buzzed off that nitro. Still diggin' it now at 65 y/o.
Earplugs are an absolute must have! I just went to Maple Grove for the Mello Yello nationals last October, which was the 1st time I'd seen top fuel cars since probably 1991, and their horsepower had DOUBLED in those 25 years, so it was insanely loud! But you don't just hear it, it rattles you! They were selling earplugs within 20 feet of walking past the ticket window, and you absolutely needed them if you value your eardrums.....
HighlanderNorth1 I've to many airshows with military jets, but I've yet to go see an NHRA event in person. Is the sound of these cars similar to that of a fighter jet using afterburners as far as rattling your body, or is it a bit more intense than that?
just think, standing in a concrete hallway, and having 8 357 mags going off at the same time. the shockwave that comes off these cars in a full pass sets off car alarms, and wacks you in the chest hard, ain't no experience like it.
TV will never do these cars justice. Even with ear protection you guys rumble as the cars goes by and your ear will still vibrate as they pass by you. It is definitely something you should see in person.
I remember the first time I went to the races with my older brother, I was 12 at the time. He and a friend snuck me into the pits and got me within 10 ft of the dragsters. When those things took off my whole body shook so hard I was sweating! Never will forget that.
Don’t have to sneak into pits at NHRA events. All tickets allow pit access these days and have for years. It is a incredible experience. I’ve been involved in drag racing since the mid 1960’s and still in awe watching these fuel cars. Words can’t explain and videos don’t come close to what it’s really like.
Only wished my Dad would come with us to a meet. When Dad passed away.. Mum came with us for the first time.. she was hooked.. ended staging for my boys in Jnr Dragster division...
Ya just GOT to watch your first Top Fuel runs without hearing protection! After that, you just GOT to go to the gun range to shoot your first 44 Magnum without hearing protection! Then, witness your first F-18 Aircraft carrier launch without hearing protection! ... and fire your first 338 Lapua without hearing protection! … and Nuclear bomb test ...
I am a former Air Force aircraft mechanic for five years. I have hearing loss and tinnitus even though I wore hearing protection most of the time. The buzzing in the ears and the need to wear hearing aids is not something to laugh about. I started attending NHRA drag racing events in Pomona during my junior year in high school, 1962-63. Up until recently, I had attended either at Pomona, Phoenix or Houston each year and I wear ear plugs and ear muffs. I want to protect what is left of my hearing. I WOULD NEVER let a friend attend a drag racing event with Top Fuel dragsters and funny cars, Pro Mods and most Alcohol dragsters and funny cars running without convincing them to wear hearing protection. Folks may think it's funny to expose friends and loved ones to that bone vibrating noise without hearing protection . . . I don't . .
Hey am just wondering this may sound like a stupid question if a a Nitro goes agest a top fuel NHRA dragster does the Nitro have a chance am guessing no
Not sure what you are meaning by "Nitro" in your question. NHRA top fuel cars (dragsters and funny cars) use nitro-methane fuel and are commonly referred to as "Nitro" cars. Not sure if you are referring to something else in particular or just confused by this "Coke" vs cola situation in the wording.
you mean a nitrous car on race gas vs a top fuel car?? nitrous is an oxidizer, N₂O; nitromethane is a fuel, a monofuel specifically, CH₃NO₂. An NHRA legal nitrous car won't stand a chance against an NHRA legal top fuel car in a drag race.
Yeah what a creep he didn't even tell his friend of the first time she's at the races which is obvious.. how loud that was.. he didn't even tell her to plug her ears or nothing.... Oh Tara I would take much better care of you on your first time
You can't FEEL it watching it on a screen! The most accurate example of a "breath taking" experience!
I have done a lot of drag racing and knowing someone was having that much fun at the track would be the payout for me.
Ive been to atleast 15 top fuel races and being at the starting line is still amazing.
Hearing the individual cylinders firing at the finish line kicked my ass. Just sweet.
I’ve been to Maple Grove and Houston speedways it never gets old.
First time I took my wife, she squealed and said it vibrated the bleachers. Then she wanted season tickets.
Finally a reaction video that shows the cars. Thank you very much and I’m happy to see her joy
I always love seeing a nice looking girl at a drag race and enjoying it !
Lol nice

Two not to
I stood behind Larry McBride's Top Fuel bike at Valdosta multiple times......the smell and eye sting is unforgettable.
It is one of the best feelings you can experience I miss going to these we used to go every year since I was about 9 years old I'm now 39

@@michaelmurray7199 A mitary jet taking off at full afterburner is about 5% of what a top fuel car sounds like. Its not even close!
utjason8 I actually found that out myself at the 2018 Virginia NHRA Nationals where I got my Baptism by Nitro. With temporarily unprotected ears.
That smile is gorgeous
Tara in 2022..... _"What!? Huh?!? I can't hear you....._
It's funny because these cars cause hearing loss without ear protection.
24,000 hp literally exploding off the line!!! No words can adequately describe that experience!! Ya just gotta be there!!!!!
It’s more enjoyable with earplugs. Trust me. You still FEEL it. With the added bonus of not loosing your hearing and pain
They say the only thing louder was the Space Shuttle launches.
It's a genuine holy sh!t experience like few others in life no doubt!
And now Tara is deaf
Man0fMeans damn she have to use signing

Love watching people's reaction, 👊✌️🤗

The experienced guy makes sure to hold on his beer. 👌
Great stuff: I would suggest the following for First-Timers: *Get them ear-protection.*
she has a little bit of a methy laugh lol. like she's been clean for a while now but wasn't always.
That’s the face ya make when 11 thousand hp is unleashed!!!
Her ears might be bleeding....but she's definately hooked. Her smile at the end is wonderful, and says it all.
Which means her ears aren't bleeding.
Yeah and don't tell her to wear ear protection.Guy standing beside her is wearing full ear muffs. Not cool guys!
The guy next to them knew to grab his beer before the cars launched, lol.
"Tara, remember, don't cover your ears while I'm filming".
Who else here turns their headphones up all the way?
I'd like to give her a top fuel experience... lol
She has never felt vibration like that before LOL !

If you think that's loud go see Motley Crue
😆
If you think anything is louder than top fuel you clearly haven't ever been
For the Tubbie Tour?
Why do you have ear protection and not her?
