I remember my first trip to Martin Dragway in Martin, Mi in the late 69's. My brother-in-law was racing but when the Funny Cars came up I was hooked. Now at 72 y/o I am still in awe of them and Top Fuel, too. The guys, and gals, who drive them have to have balls of titanium. Nothing on Earth like it.
For someone whose never been to the Drags…you have no idea the power of a Top Fueler (nitro/methane is the fuel, yes that nitro). It literally takes your breath away. You feel it in your chest and the ground. It feels like your lungs collapse momentarily. Your brain is completely overwhelmed for the first second. Like being in a trash can in the center of a fireworks display condensed down into 4 seconds.
I was never at a Drag race in person until 1993, It was the gator Nationals in Florida. I was fourty years old. I'd seen lots of drag racing on Tv. But I was totally un prepared for the sound of the funny cars and top feul dragsters. No ear plugs, no hearing protect nothing. Never even knew i needed it. But when they light those candles, it's like someone is beating on your chest. with a sledge hamer. Not just the sound of it, but you feel it through your whole body. you don't even get any of that over your TV.
Need to add this to my bucket list..never been to top fuel…did stand next to the fence at the daytona 500 and while in the Air Force ..got to be in a hush house with an f-16 engine run up with full burner!! Both change my heart beat! Cool vid of the ladies expression!
Standing in the wedge between two fuel cars when they leave, is this... times Ten. The throttle response is what has always impressed me most about fuel cars.
It's really unnerving to feel your entire body vibrate down to your bones. It stops less than 5 seconds later. Then you're like wow!!!! Let's do that again. 😂.
The two loudest events I've ever heard was a top-fuel race such as this one, and standing between the catapults on an aircraft carrier during a launch.
The loudest event I’ve experienced while in the Air Force was Trimming the engines on a KC-135 during water injection. Those j-57s were extremely loud and there were four of them. This was back in the early 70s.
If you ever get an opportunity to stand behind them at the start, don’t blink when the tree turns green. If you do, all you will see are the parachutes.
I tell everyone that I know who is into racing, you need to experience top fuel, dragster’s and funny cars or you’re missing the whole deal. nothing like having your eyes and your nose burn from nitromethane.
Come on!! Earplugs? That's not even close to the Top Fuel Experience! I've been to 100s of Top Fuel, right behind the cars. No Earplugs. Hope you took them out at some point.
Nothing on earth like it... Awesome ......
That never gets old !!!!
That worked , it hit the giggle button , big smiles
Not even close to Top Fuel Experience with Earplugs. Sadly.

Should have been around the pits back when the throttle wack happens
Start video at 1:05....
You're never going to get that reaction from an electric dragster.
Earplugs? We don't need no stinken earplugs!
Who are they?
That shockwave goes through your soul...😂😂😂😂
Like seeing a vehicle being hurled from the hand of God.
Like being kicked in the ass by the fire breathing Devil.
Never been. I imagine it is a bit like having the air sucked out of your lungs...
By all means GO. It's an experience you'll never forget. It's like a drug. One try and you're hooked.
