I reconstructed a design similar to this when testing out various farms - I also like having the observers looking at the bottom reed (sugarcane) - it causes random tick updates, but on a large scale, it's slightly faster, but also slightly bulkier - something ilmango and gnembon would make an hour long video on, but I don't care if I get 1,000 drops an hour less. :)
why does he put the observers at the level of the first block of sugarcane rather than second? should it be the second so it can detect the empty space being filled with sugar cane and activiating the pistons?

I really appreciate your designs and tutorials. Have been for years. Efficient, straight forward, entertaining, well explained and incredibly useful. Thanks so much!
Thank you for this tutorial, and thank you for explaining the design instead of just placing blocks and calling it a day. As someone learning redstone, nothing frustrates me more than watching a tutorial that doesnt explain and just says "I'm sure everyone knows how this works". So yeah, thank you.
I really like the simplicity and reliability of this design! Since the rates aren't mentioned anywhere, I decided to quickly measure them with carpet mod in the world download. They seem to stabilize at slightly below 2500 items/hour there. Assuming that all modules are equally efficient (which they should be since all lines have the same probability per tick to be activated (even on the edge)), that gives around 50 items per hour per module (or 3.125 bone meal/hour if composted).
Thanks so much for this Tango! I love just having my farms on in the background and hate the constant need for monitoring the flying machine farms. When I saw the farm in your HC vid I was blown away, so happy you made a tutorial ❤️

UPDATED FOR 1.20+ 100% Loseless. >Replace the iron bars with closed fence gates, > Reason you're finding sugar cane on the dirt is because of both pistons pushing the item from both sides at the same time, to fix this add a repeater and set delay to 4 , so that the pistons facing each other does not fire at the same time.
@@Mr._Lagom From 1.16 ownards Iron Bars connect to nearby blocks such as piston heads. This sometimes pushes the sugarcane to the sides. Fence Gates don't have that problem
Thank you, Tango! Seriously. You worked really hard to perfect this. We know you don't like making tutorials so this is extra special that you shared it. I appreciate how you defined the reason you built it this way. I'm to the point in my world I need rockets... this makes getting the paper soooo much easier!
Great tut Tango, I like how much thought you've put into having the farm be actually reasonable in terms of cost thus being something feasible to actually build in a survival world xD
Thanks Tango. I saw it on HC and was interested in the tutorial. I've started a survival world on 1.16 when the update rolled out and wasn't quite happy with the typical sugarcane-farm designs yet. Thanks for solving the problem with sugarcane just sitting on the blocks. I'm guessing it would work with bamboo as well, right? (Just no need for the water in the first layer) Will definitely build this one.
So glad you decided to make the tutorial. I'm gonna build this farm soon in my world. I was always iffy on the pistons in the middle of total growth so it's awesome to see the version which is shorter and lossless.
For bedrock, the only difference is we cant have flowing water at the same height at sugarcane. I haven't seen any get stuck on the dirt yet,all of the sugarcane get pushed into the iron bars and falls straight down into the water, so the farm is still lossless if you just have your flowing water in the channel where Tango has his solid water.
Found something fun to do with this farm. I changed up how the pistons are powered to an Observer line on top of the pistons. It primarily reduced gaps by having the walls be (from bottom to top) Sea Lantern, Piston, Observer. I found it soothing in an odd way with how the pistons fired in a wave motion (using quieter pistons from vanilla tweaks) and can do a fun lighting or other things on the outer walls that react to the observers.
FOR BEDROCK PLAYERS. Just as a heads up, doesn't work on bedrock. Water will wash away sugarcane and observer doesn't read the age change on bottom sugarcane. But awesome video Tango, unfortunately didn't work for bedrock but it did give me ideas on how to make my own lossless design.
I am also Bedrock and yes the water flow doesn't work. I have made adjustments by removing the observers at the end and placing them on top of the pistons. That way it observes them at 3 high and then pushes the middle breaking off the top two. Which also means a second row of iron bars to push them into so they drop straight down. The middle is 8 Hoppers that are water logged flowing into a Chest. I loved and hatted having to find a work around but thinking things through and trouble shooting gave me satisfaction of figuring out.
I think the reason these don’t get as much attention is because people only watch it when they need to build a sugar cane farm , it should get more views in the long run

The whole "top slabs in between the cane" part was in there twice. No harm done, it just really threw me off... (1:38 and 3:32)
Max Miles glad I’m not the only one that noticed that lol. Really confused me too!
Yeah I noticed that too
When I add top water it knocks off my sugar cane? What am I doing wrong?

3 years later, still works great- and with the auto crafter i can automatically make paper and rockets! everyone day ty tango
That is so great Tango!!!! I will definitely build this at my world!! Thanks for the tutorial!!!😁😍
Thanks a lot for the tutorial, Tango! I've waited for this one.
This is great! just built mine with 3 rows and it's been producing very well.
Tango, I’ve only just begun but your great at tutorials. You should do more!!!
100% gonna build this! Awesome job Tango! GG
Thank you so much! This is the best farm without 0 tick! We need more tutorials!
I really like the simplicity and reliability of this design!
Since the rates aren't mentioned anywhere, I decided to quickly measure them with carpet mod in the world download.
They seem to stabilize at slightly below 2500 items/hour there. Assuming that all modules are equally efficient (which they should be since all lines have the same probability per tick to be activated (even on the edge)), that gives around 50 items per hour per module (or 3.125 bone meal/hour if composted).
is this per module?
@@Paranorium 2500 for the whole wdl, 50 per module
@@thomaskolar90 ah great. Thanks man!
Thanks so much for this Tango! I love just having my farms on in the background and hate the constant need for monitoring the flying machine farms. When I saw the farm in your HC vid I was blown away, so happy you made a tutorial ❤️
This was so EAST to BUILD!
EAST
Yes really EAST
very EAST
Kinda sad it wasn’t a bit West tbh😢
EAST VERY VERY “EAST”
for all of you wanting to know each module makes ~30 sugarcane per hr (tested with a 2x4x4 system for 20 min then took the total ( 5 stacks )multiplied by 3 then divided by 32)
that's so wrong lol, I tested it. A sigle module makes like ~90 per hr
I watched you design this on livestream and as promised, here's some love. Awesome design and awesome tutorial
Saw the stream so I already know this lol. Still watching tho bc tango
Me too
UPDATED FOR 1.20+ 100% Loseless.
>Replace the iron bars with closed fence gates,
> Reason you're finding sugar cane on the dirt is because of both pistons pushing the item from both sides at the same time, to fix this add a repeater and set delay to 4 , so that the pistons facing each other does not fire at the same time.
why fence gates instead tho?
@@Mr._Lagom From 1.16 ownards Iron Bars connect to nearby blocks such as piston heads. This sometimes pushes the sugarcane to the sides. Fence Gates don't have that problem
@@agniveshsp ah, tysm!
Where do I add this Repeater

Amazing video, will add it today to my world! Now just missing your amazing iron farm 😅
Love the tutorial!! I’m not good with redstone but this one sounds so easy to make! Will def build it in my single player
Playing in 1.21.1 in 2024, still works perfectly!!!! Very server friendly!
Thank you for making this, I know that you probably would have preferred to make a hermitcraft video
Everyone watch this video through and give it some love, and we may get more tutorials in the future!
Thanks!
Thank you, Tango! Seriously. You worked really hard to perfect this. We know you don't like making tutorials so this is extra special that you shared it.
I appreciate how you defined the reason you built it this way. I'm to the point in my world I need rockets... this makes getting the paper soooo much easier!
Wow this is one the best tutorials ive seen some of the oher tutorials are super complicated for something that is so simple.
Just made this (6 modules - parallel) and it works fantastic! Thanks Tango
Excellent!
Great tut Tango, I like how much thought you've put into having the farm be actually reasonable in terms of cost thus being something feasible to actually build in a survival world xD
For the bit of the farm where the pistons are back to back, you can have only 1 line of redstone because bud will power both pistons.
This has been my go-to sugar cane farm design since this vid came out
Thanks Tango.
Not sure if you built this, but I thought that I would keep the soil layer water for bamboo, since it is part of the collection system.
I can’t wait to build this!
So glad you decided to make the tutorial. I'm gonna build this farm soon in my world. I was always iffy on the pistons in the middle of total growth so it's awesome to see the version which is shorter and lossless.
still works. replace the chain with closed fence gate and it’s the best bang for your buck farm you will find. (1.19.2 java)
Right as I was about to make a sugar cane farm... this tutorial showed up. Now I don't need to use my brain
For bedrock, the only difference is we cant have flowing water at the same height at sugarcane.
I haven't seen any get stuck on the dirt yet,all of the sugarcane get pushed into the iron bars and falls straight down into the water, so the farm is still lossless if you just have your flowing water in the channel where Tango has his solid water.
did you manage to get this to work tho?
Thank you!
I've been stuck trying to recreate this farm for a few days lol. I thought I was doing something wrong. Thanks for explaining.
but we can just, like, bonemeal the sugar cane
@@toxiclynark589 the answer is pretty late, but yeah! works fine
Thanks Tango for taking the time to make this video
Hitting you with a like because we secretly love build tutorials!
Overall pretty good concept. However I would recommend adding some light source blocks so hostile mobs don't spawn within the sugarcane.
True zombies occasionally spawn inside mine
