Oh Sweetie, I am 57 years old, and never lived in one of those larger homes that you are talking of. I raised 3 children on my own, in a small home. Now that they are adults it's HUGE! and I would give anything for them to be crowding these walls again. You broke my heart when you were crying, in #7, those that act as if they have more usually don't, and are about to lose it all. Stay humble, God holds your strength, you know this, never forget it. Small homes hold happier, more grateful hearts.

I'm always blown away by women that have to have their husband hang a picture up for them. Get it together ladies, you are perfectly capable of doing so much by yourselves. I realized 30 years ago that if I wanted something done around the house I better figure out how to do it. I've remodeled many homes and learned new skills with each remodel. I'm 69 years old now and have just finished up my latest home remodel. I've installed LVP flooring, painted all the walls, ripped carpet off my stairs and installed oak treads, replaced light fixtures, installed new cabinets and sinks and hooked them up with no leaks. Don't underestimate yourselves, pay attention when you take something apart and then you know how to put it back. RUclips is an invaluable source of information!!

You are so right. My husband and I had very little when we started with our home 33 years ago. It was the worst house on the block, today it is one of the better ones. My stance was, take it slowly, spend wisely, and you don’t need tons of money. Just like you and your hubby, we taught ourselves how to do things. There is very little we can’t do. This was wonderful advice. You should be proud of what you have achieved, your home is beautiful.❤

We live in a small home and love it! I feel closer to my kids as our rooms are near each other and we spend time near each other since the living spaces are so close/small. I can't imagine having my kids in a room far from me, like many people with large homes. I love this video and I love the quotes! When I reflect on the hospitality of others, I felt "warmth" and love by those who did things for me because they wanted to. It so happens that those same people lived in small homes. Everything about their hospitality made me feel good inside. I didn't care if they were in an ugly apartment or not, and in fact, I don't remember their home, I remember how I FELT. I've been in plenty of large homes that felt cold because of how I was treated. I'm in no way saying only bad people live in large homes, btw. 😅
Also, our children won't remember a "perfect " home. Our kids remember RELATIONSHIPS and real-life experiences.

Loved this video!! Especially when you started talking about time. I repainted our kitchen cabinets this summer and it took me a few months because I did it by myself. But reflecting on the project, I realized how much time I wasted by scrolling on my phone in the afternoon before starting my painting. When I would put the kids down for rest time, I just wanted to check Instagram and that “checking” ended up being 45 minutes!! CRAZY. I probably could have shaved at least 3 weeks off my kitchen project by simply starting the painting right when my kids went down for rest time. So all that to say, this year I just decided to delete Instagram completely and it’s been so nice. I have freed up so much time to do other, more necessary things and I am not missing out on anything. Your home is beautiful, Andrea!! Thanks for sharing all of your insight 💜

I went to an estate sale one day and they had an item I liked and it was $200. It was antique, it was beautiful and it was the reason I went to the sale. But, I wasn’t aware that it would be $200. Therefore, I did not get it. To satisfy my shopping urges that day I stopped at a Goodwill on the way home and spent around $40. Over the course of a month I made various stops at Goodwill spending between $20 and $40 each time. At the end of the month I was going through the transactions on my bank statement and I realized that in that month I spent more than $200 at Goodwill for smaller items that cost anywhere from $1-$15. In hindsight, when I look back on the items I had bought that month, there were some that I was glad I got, but all in all I think I would’ve preferred the $200 item at the estate sale over all the smaller items I picked up at Goodwill. I could not bring myself to spend 200 in one transaction, but I spent over $200 in multiple transactions.
I am also guilty of spending my time, watching DIY videos on RUclips, and not taking the time to actually do the DIY myself.

Keeping to a tight budget -- either by choice or need -- makes us more environmentally responsible. Re-using and recycling, and NOT just throwing things away and buying brand new, is the best way to go if we care about our planet. I admire so much that you have done that consistently! And kudos to your husband for being willing to be an enthusiastic learner! He has done a terrific job!

Hi Andrea! Sheri here, using my husband's chrome book, LOL. Love this video. I too have been blessed with a husband who has learned to do so many things in our home. I cannot guess how much money he has saved us in the 37 years we have been married . You are so right, it is definitely litlle bu little and patience is certainly something that I have had to learn. I've had to learn not to look at what others have but focus on what I am able to do with what God has given me. I painted my kitchen cubboards because it was what worked with our finances. I had never done it before and used videos on you tube to see how others did it. The cubboards turned out great! If I can do it I know others can do it to. And yes, don't be afraid to fail. Thanks so much for this video.

Andrea, this was a great video today. I agree with you - the hardest part about any project is just getting started! The children’s song is a wonderful reminder of how to get started. Thanks for sharing your words of wisdom.

Amen! We live in a SMALL home, that is most definitely imperfect, BUT I have managed to be able to create small areas of contentment, as we work towards our goals. Decluttering is one of my BIGGEST goals, that is a continual process and challenge. Deciding on a style is a struggle, but I TRY to listen to my inner voice and tune into what FEELS good. Thrifting and DIY have been my best friends~ Thank you for your uplifting spirit and words!

  • @jkp62

Andrea! This! Cohesive design is gradual unless one has unlimited $ to hire a decorator and buy everything all at once, time is what it takes to create a home. I remember just starting out as a single and then married- we believe we have to get all the stuff our parents have in their homes and not realize that our parents, grandparents, etc started out with nothing and slowly acquired those furnishings and decor and kitchen stuff, etc over time as they could afford it- getting loans for furniture and credit cards were not the norm back then and our parents and grandparents saved money to create their homes. Plus, tastes and priorities evolve as we mature, gain families, become empty nesters, etc. This is why I keep my walls a neutral off white- this allows me the opportunity to change curtains, rugs, throw pillows, slip covers, etc as my tastes change (which seems annually) and keeping neutral walls allows me to make mistakes with the soft decor without repainting walls/ceilings/trim. After 40 years of marriage, I am a simple type of decorator- basic furniture, classic lamps (everywhere because we have minimal south or eastern set windows, most all are northern)- my furniture is high quality that has taken us this long to purchase and I pay for slipcovers made to not only preserve the fabric and leather but also to change up color and pattern when I feel like a change. And plants, not a jungle but enough to fill spaces that cry for something to complete that area. And HINT for those with small homes with low ceilings- paint the walls, ceiling AND trim all the same color- it truly makes a room look bigger and taller! The only wood tones in our rooms is our furniture and exterior doors and kitchen cabinets, everything else is the same color, even our bath vanity because our only bathroom is very small and painting it the same color as our walls makes the vanity recede and makes that 6x7ft space appear much brighter and bigger.

Your discussion of commitment and willingness to make mistakes reminded me of something I heard years ago - "an imperfect something is better than a perfect nothing." The dark side of living in the information age is analysis paralysis - too much information can make us consumers of information and discourage actually doing something with that information. Your videos are so encouraging. Thanks for that!

Great video! We've been living in our current home since 2002 and I didn't start decorating, including painting, until the summer of 2020! I also struggled with styling our home. I had "not time, no money", that was my excuse. But then Covid hit and I found myself with plenty of time. We were able to paint and purchase some items that completely changed the look of our living room. I slowly started to tackle a room at a time and now our home is slowing starting to be something I am proud of and love. I also got into thrifting (thanks to your channel) and enjoy looking for unique pieces to bring into our home. I agree with all you said in this video. Even the part of your husband teaching himself by watching videos to get stuff done around the house. My husband does the same thing with everything he takes care of in our home and our vehicles. He doesn't like to do it, but he knows it' s best for our wallet! I really enjoyed this video! /Thank you.

Your wisdom is amazing! I’ve been married for 48 years and we have remodeled so many houses. We’ve been in this fixer upper for 2 years now and have done so much but have so much more to do. My husband still works full time, active in helping our church plus is a full time volunteer fire chief in our small community. Time is obviously an issue and we’re on a tight budget. Also, there are physical challenges as we are seniors. As much as I had wished it could’ve all been done in a year I can actually say that it’s a good thing it wasn’t. As we live here and think about our options we have changed our minds so many times on how to do projects. So each room we’ve finished ends up being the best way. Our next big project is the kitchen. We’ve been talking about all the different ways we can redo it for 2 years. We’re still undecided! For one thing, it’s going to be the most expensive room in the house so that makes it very challenging! I hope by this time next year I’ll be thinking about what a big project that was and so hard to live in but it it was so worth it! If it’s still not done, oh well, little by little. 😂 I really enjoyed this video and it’s definitely not too long! Thx 🙏🏻

I'm struggling emotionally like you are with investing in higher ticket items. There is a chair I want, it's $2700, but I'd have it forever and probably not need to reupholster it for the next 20 years because the fabric is so high quality. But MAN have I been putting myself through changes about it. I know it would kick my living room up about three levels, and I also know "fast furniture" looks meh within a year and you will definitely be reupholstering in three. So I'm in prayer on this! Just found you and really enjoyed your video. New subbie!

About finding your style - someone once told me that if you bring only things that you really, really love into your home, it will all go together and your “style” will just evolve - that’s pretty much what I’ve done & I’m sure my style could be described in many ways, starting with “eclectic “ ! And always have fun - enjoy the journey !

You are so amazing. Your ideas are such an inspiration. I moved from a small cozy home in the country, to a larger home nearer my grown children. I miss that cozy home. I have found that making one room cozy and warm is very helpful. It gives me a place to go and feel comfortable! When I can get to the other rooms to make them cozy, I will. I am the turtle in the story..I move slow, but I’ll get to the finish line!

Andrea, I always LOVE your videos!! I live in a small 1955 cottage, and you are right no all day cleaning with a smaller house. I love all the quotes you shared with us. Your home style is the home style I crave to achieve eventually-patience, Jeannie, patience. I always feel so much better in my soul and in my heart after seeing your videos. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Honestly my concern is cleaning/dusting everything. I love all the unique pieces you have. I hate seeing dust sitting on beautiful pieces but if you don't have time to pick up each one weekly to dust, then what? Do you have a simple method for dusting or cleaning baskets, flowers, moving each piece of pottery, etc? I think this was one of my favorite videos of yours. Thank you!

What valuable advice Andrea!! I know for myself, a daily reminder helps motivate me. When I want to declutter a room I first get myself a big box and some bags and put them in that room. Then I put a daily reminder on my phone when I know I will have time, to declutter! When the reminder goes off, I stop whatever I’m doing, I set a 15 min timer and power declutter for those 15 min. It may take a week or more, but with those little consistent steps, like you said, I get it done!

Such a great video with lots of good information and suggestions. For many new homeowners, renters, newly married couples you covered many of the major issues confronted when owning a home, doing home improvements etc.
I am a retiree, lived in a small home 40 years, raised our kids, etc. Money was tight so prioritizing was always a major factor in our lives. A new toilet, or refrigerator, upkeep of the outside of the house, the inside of the house always came first and decorating was secondary. For 25 years I never changed our decor. Maybe a new couch or chair. A new lamp when needed.
I had small children and ran a daycare so I accepted the fact toys were a part of our life during the early years. I think people expect their homes to be RUclips show houses and forget they are homes with people , children, families living there.
Lol have to say I am glad we did not have internet or cell phones or RUclips in my early marriage days. Lol it is easy to sit and relax watching all the wonderful influencers instead of doing laundry or cleaning toilets or playing with our kids.
Thank you for sharing your tips!

Even though thos is not out forever home, we still want to make it beautiful and to our style. I agree with you, do what you can when you you can. Just be content until you are able to so projects. I have been wanting to change out the layout of my kitchen for so long, but there are a few little things qe have to do before we can that will be expensive to do so we have to be patient.

I 100% agree that there is nothing wrong with a small house and I prefer my current 1380sq.ft. house to my former 2600 sq.ft. house. It is much easier to clean, heat/cool, and decorate a small house and much easier to make it feel cozy. In my current smaller house I feel like I can really spend time perfecting each space because there's less area to cover. When I lived in a large house the idea of decorating felt overwhelming because it would take many more gallons of paint, sq.ft. of flooring, hours of diy time, etc. to tackle any decorating project. In a small house decorating feels manageable.

We keep a cardboard box in our room and throughout the week or month (whatever it takes), we throw in things we want to get rid of. When the box is full, we drop it off at Goodwill or a thrift store. Amazing how much stuff can leave over time.

I am definitely an inch by inch mentality person . I actually took a piece of binder paper and drew a stick figure blue print of the rooms in my home, including the garage. In each room box I wrote the projects I wanted to accomplish, in the order of priority. I then took one room at a time, crossing off completed projects. I would not go to the next room til one was done. I even drew all the shelves in the garage and numbered them . LIttle by little, inch by inch I had touched every room, every closet, every shelf , every cupboard. Decluttered and donated til I felt a sense of peace. I cannot accomplish anything in chaos. I need control or it feels to overwhelming , and then its to easy to never get started.

YES, grew up in a household of women and we just HAD to learn. We never had the money for a handyman. Funny how some people just think that another person just Has those skills to repair and do carpentry etc. Every single thing we do in life is learned. I always tell my son, "If someone else can do it, you can to. They just learned how." His perspective is quite a bit different than a lot of kids, because of that. When I was dating my husband, he came over one time and I was using a dremel on the cupboards, saw dust flying everywhere, lol. He was shocked and said, what are you doing? I was sanding down an area for the fridge to fit under the cupboard. The previous owners didn't measure correctly and when I moved in the fridge stuck out six inches. Another time he came home and I was ripping out carpeting. It was an awful shag orange and I couldn't stand it anymore and found hardwood. I also told my son, we have things in this life we have to do, we can view them as drudgery or enjoy the journey and process. We aren't placed on this planet to be happy with everything and view life as wrong if we aren't. Overcoming and learning brings a lot of joy. I have a larger home and it is more difficult to keep clean for me and easier to bring too many things in.
