- I didn't realize how much the camera was shaking when I filmed this, it was sitting on a piece of foam for added insulation, didn't help because its TOO MUCH POWER! Just got these in, super loud, cleans are really clean, distorted is very distorted, I like em a lot. Distortion is footswitchable, DI and line out on the back, both running at 4 ohms.

I’m a little late to the party but once you start playing it brings me nostalgia. The raw sound and the riffs remind me of going to the local music spot and listening to the bass players perform their mic check right before the set starts. Such a sweet noise

That and they always play some slow walking blues line and mess up on the chord transitions like it's the first time they've ever played an instrument.

Check out the 300 watt version, most of the time these things are a quarter of the way up if that, they are incredibly loud.

I used one at a show the other day, and I've used an Orange 8x10, it sounded cool, super bassy, but harder to dial in the top end kinda fuzz, 2 amps makes that easier to achieve.

Silver sharpie paint pens. I painted it, the ouroboros was from a show poster, as was the hand, the witch looking thing is from True Detective.

One question; what made you want to go with two of these instead of the Orange AD200B (all tube bass head?)
I used an AD200B on the Destroyer of Light and Godhunter split, Endsville. I liked for recording but I've just gotten away from tubes on bass. The heads are super heavy, and I hate replacing tubes. Also I feel like solid state heads have a really fast response that I like for the palm muting.

heavy man, how do you play them at the same time?
I've been using a Boss space echo that has one input and two outputs, so it goes bass > tuner > distortion > delay > output a into the top head, output b into the bottom head. With most stereo delays the second output it double the delay time when the delay is on, it gets a kinda ping pong effect between the two sets of speakers.

I have one of these heads. I play it through an Ampeg 8x10. It sounds really thin and I can’t gig with it. I wonder if a different cab would be better.
I would check that all your speakers are working, and in phase. Have some one play through it, at a low level, and move your head up and down, about a foot away from the speakers. It should sound consistent. If it sounds way bassy, then gets thin, then bassy, you might have phase problems. Does the cab have multiple inputs on the back? If so try to one run speaker cable, into one input, labeled mono, and see if it’s powering all the speakers. Let me know how it goes.

love it. you say the dist is footswitchable, but i don't see that on the back. . . also i'm using a peavey headliner 1000w head right now. this holds up or better?? i use it with two 410 cabs. i would with this too.
I've never tried one of those Peaveys but just looking at the specs, it looks like a quality amp, I love all the old Peavey stuff.

It depends on your setup. I love having two of them, I've gotten to where I EQ one head really mid-rangey/treble, and the other super low sub-bass, the blend of the two is awesome. That being said, having 2 heads means you need two of everything. Two outputs from your pedal board, two cables to plug into the heads, two cables for the footswitches, a double footswitch, two DI's if the sound guy wants to use them, or 2 mics one on the top speakers, and one on the bottom. It has more room for failure, mainly the cables, but I think it's worth it.
If I could do it over, I totally would totally do two heads again, but I would use the OB-1 300's, these 500's are insanely powerful, and even playing in a crushingly loud doom band, I rarely turn them more than a quarter of the way up.
All that being said, if you had an 8x10 cab, one of these is more than enough to push tons of bass and volume, and if I was using just one, I would go for the 500.
the OB1-300 didnt have enough low to keep up in a band setting. How does the low end on the OB1-50- compare to the 4 stroke 500? do you have any experience with the 4 stroke ?
No experience with the 4 stroke, but this one has an insane amount of low end.

Terror bass was basically the same as this amp, but I liked the form factor of the rack mount. The terror bass had the XLR out which the OB series didn’t, which is something that is in the terrors favor

I really don't like the tone of the J bass (I'm an EB-3 guy), but it sounds (gorgeously so) nasty through the Orange heads. It sure dooms :)

Does this amp have a power drop at 8 Ohms? or does it remain at 500 watts for 4 and 8 Ohm? Second. Would this amp kill an 2x15 rated at 400 watts at 8ohm. Is the Ob1-300 loud enough at 8 ohm?
I don't know about the power drop at 8 ohms, the manual doesn't say anything about it. Honestly the 300 should be plenty loud, these 500s are monsters and most sound guys and the rest of my band won't let me play above half way.
And I would match the power of the cab, the 500 would probably blow it, it pushes my 4x10s really hard and they're rated at 400 watts each

Hi! What happened to the amps? I saw current pics of you using other gear. I play a similar style, use two Ashdown ABM 500, thinking about getting two OB1 to get more volume. How did the amps work?
The OB1's were purchased by the band I use to be in, so when I left the amps stayed. I love the OB1's, and the 2 500's were monstrous, I never really used them all the way up in any practical setting, so the 300's would probably save you some cash and achieve the same result.

Yeah, the cheap and free way is to use the strings as files, and go slow. I usually cut off the end, and use that before I install the string. Also if you're going to do that, your kinda committing to those gauges. I've set up my guitars like this for a few years, so I know I enjoy it, but you may destroy a nut in the process. But hey nuts are cheap, and you gotta learn somehow. Also thats why you should by a $80 guitar to bang on and not worry to much about it.

You're tuned to c standard right? What string gauge are you using? I'm struggling to find the right gauge for my p bass that isn't either too thick or too floppy (hehe heh heh)
I think at this point I was using a Dunlop Medium 5 string set, and just using the 4 lowest strings. 130 105 85 65. I did have to drill out the bridge for that lowest string, and I do prefer heavy strings, try a 125 set and report back.
