    Like 1960s British fashion, Orange amplification has always stood out from the crowd. And the lively looks of their cabinets and heads are a physical manifestation of the Orange sound. Orange’s new OB1 Series was inspired by bassists who use two amps to get their clean and dirty tones, and to achieve this dual-prong approach, the streamlined amps integrate class-AB technology with a flexible overdrive section. There is a 300-watt model in the series, but our attention was directed at the more powerful OB1-500.
    One of the ways some bassists produce thick, distorted tones is by splitting their signal and running into two amps-one clean head and an overdriven guitar amp. The OB1-500 is inspired by this philosophy, yet packs everything into a single 2U rackmount chassis that also stands alone on burly rubber feet.
    When you plug into the 500-watt OB1-500, it splits your bass signal into two separate paths: One amplifies the clean sound, the other seasons it with upper-harmonic distortion. Gain and blend controls balance the intensity and level of the distortion before the combined signal is sent through a simple but robust EQ.

    Just bought mine. Loud as hell (i set volume to 3/10 in rehearsal situation), equipped with both crystal clear and caveman-dirty sounds. Perfect amp for pick users.

      3 years ago: I sold my OB-1 500, then bought The Bass Butler, sold Butler to buy a Bass Terror MK 1, sold Bass Terror, bought OB-300.
      Selling OB-1 500 was a mistake.

    The predecessor of these amps, the OB-1K, was never released so I'm glad Orange repackaged them in a different box. Much more affordable than the intended price of the OB-1K and still sounds as great! Although as a fellow Star Wars geek I would have put a sticker or sharpied "enobi" on that bass head. :D

    That amp has an awesome DOOM tone! But it needs an Effects Loop.

    For solid state it sounds great. What I like is how well it retains the low end even wo blending end clean bottom. It's impressive, for the price, but still not quite the wonderful wounds you get out of the AD200 for $2400; Which unfortunately WAY out of my price range.

      Absolutely. Wampler makes a overdrive called the Low Blow that gets close to this sound.

    I really get that bass amps with built in OD are cool. Who wouldn't love that? But why does every demo of this amp focus on that aspect. More often than not, you're going to be using it a lot cleaner, so why not give a better overview of clean tones?

    • @gutbucket260

      Doesn't OB it stand for "Orange Bass" ?

      Over driven or fuzz bass sounds like ass. Never could stand it. Natural overdrive from a large headroom amp being over driven might sound all right but it's a totally different sound. Geddy Lee had a touch of it going on, but he still had enough clear tone going on with it, too.

    • @valendis

      I completely agree with you, I'm interested but I probably don't want the OD all the time

    Is love to see a review of the Tech21 Dug 1000 amp. Same basic concept with a few more features.
    I have a suspicion that this sounds better, but the tech21 is more versatile.

    • @tungtobak
      @tungtobak 9 лет назад

      Buskin Kef Overdriven bass rarely has any bottom end, no. The trick is to split the signal and keep the low end clean or use a overdrive that does this for you. This was not something they had done with this demo..

    • @girmonsproductions
      @girmonsproductions 11 месяцев назад

      why so? what kind of amp or settings would be good in a band?

    • @grisbain
      @grisbain 11 месяцев назад

      @@girmonsproductions I can’t tell you what settings and amps would be ideal for every situation. Just that the Orange amp sounded terrible. On its own it sounded sort of cool but with a band it was missing a fullness. Everyone noticed it. I brought it to one gig where I let other people use it and they also hated it. I remember I went out to the parking lot across the street and I could hear that stupid honking sound. I traded it in at a loss just to be rid of it.

    • @grisbain
      @grisbain 11 месяцев назад

      @@girmonsproductions it’s hard to describe the sound. The bass wasn’t right, the mids have no frequency control, the treble wasn’t right, the distortion is fizzy and has no touch sensitivity. Totally disappointing. Also the amp has no preamp in so you can’t just use it as a cool looking power amp. It’s a dud all around.

    • @girmonsproductions
      @girmonsproductions 11 месяцев назад

      @@grisbain what cab were you using? I use the crush bass 100 which was 1x15" speaker but I need more watts than 100 so I'm looking where I should go next. I'm also considering Fender Rumble 500.

    • @grisbain
      @grisbain 11 месяцев назад

      @@girmonsproductions I play Traynor Monoblock II amps into Ampeg 8x10 cabs. I have used Fender Rumbles and I think they are decent.

    Terrible tone and demo. Try dialing in a sound you would actually use in a band
