In 2016, I had a disc rupture. I ruptured my L3/4 and severed nerves in leg making me unable to walk. I had a disectomy and a Laminectomy. I was told I would never run again. I was in a wheel chair for a while and unable to walk for a long time. It took me 4 years to be able to get back into it. I started slowly back in 2020 and now I've completed a couple of half marathons. I'm not ready to get back to a marathon, but I'm hoping to work up to accomplishing this in 2023. Good work sir! Resting before runs, doing strength work, eating oat flakes, but also getting back into a group - that's where I am at. I am doing a bit of interval training and a slow long run the weekends. I "flippin" ugly cried, and not ashamed to admit it.
I'm more than 3 months out of running because of what I thought was just a minor injury. Missed my first marathon because of it. Wondering if I'll ever get the chance to enter another one, but you're a huge inspiration. You've overcome even more so I'm not giving up just yet.
    Thank you champion!

I didn't expect to get a bit emotional, but I did. I felt so much of this, having been through surgery as well after breaking both kneecaps. Every thing that Rick said was so familiar...the wondering if you'd every walk or run again, trying to do basic things for yourself but needing to rely on family, going through PT, doing the strength work...and then finally experiencing that first run, no matter how short it was. And how much it meant and what a blessing it was.
So happy for you, Rick!!! Can't wait to see you meet your next goal.

So emotional right now.. I remember watching the initial videos of Rick's injury and surgery. Rick's journey shows he is a fighter and is an inspiration to many grappling with running related injuries. I am glad that he is back and would love to see a series on Rick's progress .. his running journey Run 2.0..

Amazing Rick! Looking so slim and strong! However, your mental resilience that you’ve gained over the past 2 years will be your biggest asset for the rest of your life. Nothing will stop you.

Ah man, has this video popped up at the right time for me. I have to get my meniscus repaired after what the doctor called "extensive damage" and been told 12 months off the road. I'm just a plodder, but running, aside from family, is the best thing in my life. I can't tell you what I've researched as far as treating meniscus injuries and would've seen hundreds of these on youtube. I've just sat down for breakfast on a warm Sunday morning here in Melbourne Australia and opened youtube and your video was the first alert that popped up. I realise my journey will not be a fraction of what you have gone through but your resilience and determination to get back have given me hope. I'm 52 years old, so I don't have a lot of years left running at a reasonably high level of fitness but I'm damn determined to get everything I can out of what I have left. Thanks Rick, you've made a difference to my life.
