It’s not easy to create the boss of arguably the greatest villain in movie history and make it not only do a credible job but outshine Vader. Of course he didn’t just do it on his own but Ian McDiarmid deserves so much credit.
@@Eggy79 and @Wally 1970 from the perspective of the average being inside the Star Wars universe they probably wouldn't understand the power dynamic running the Empire, let alone understand the nature of the Emperor or even know what he looks like. But from my perspective, a movie goer, and a kid who saw Star Wars opening night in 1977, the Emperor steals the scenes where the two are together and his presence in those movies makes for a much more interesting story.
Omg this guy sounds so comforting. He is like Morgan Freeman, he can narrate anything and chill yout anyone, yest he is the face and voice of a great legendary villian
This is my most favourite interview with Ian McDiarmid, I have an audiocopy, but it was wonderful to find this posted for everyone to enjoy, thank you Zach. :) (It was pleasing to see that the audio glitch "by sending various holograms...." was not only in my copy as well)
I’ve been saying that I’d love to see a Palpatine standalone film since the prequels. I hope we do cos he’s an amazing actor and such an intriguing character.
Apparently, Ian McDiarmid was cast as the Emperor, because his voice sounded similar to that of Clive Revill, who voiced the Emperor in the original cut of the Empire Strikes Back.
I saw this interview when they aired it at Celebrations in Indy back before Ep III came out. Loved it then and still do now! That is actually not an audio glitch, he stumbles/stutters on that line.
- You're playing the Emperor of the Universe - So we're doing it then Oh and by the way, out of the corner of your yellow contact lenses, you can play Spot The 2,000 Stormtroopers. Welcome to the SW universe Ian xD
I think Ian might be overestimating Palpatine’s age. He was 61 when revenge of the sith was released and since return of the Jedi takes place about 20-something years in the future, that would have meant Palpatine was probably in his Mid 80’s. It also means Ian is still too young for the part lol
I mean... 🤔 Sith Lords usually look pretty messed up. Yellow eyes and dark side degradation. Even at 90 Ian would never have that bad forehead wrinkles 😆😆
I’m so glad Ian enjoyed his work on Star Wars. I always felt a tinge of disappointment when hearing Alec Guinness’ recollections, that he thought it was rubbish and didn’t enjoy the experience. I think he was of the wrong generation to appreciate Star Wars, whereas Ian was what, forty when he did Jedi? Perhaps more receptive of blockbuster films (whereas Guinness and his generation of primarily stage actors seemed to be kind of dismissive of that sort of work).
I don’t think Guinness particularly hated Star Wars or his experience with it. He just described the original Lucas-written dialogue that was given to him as « rubbish ». Otherwise, he was just kind of annoyed at it being considered the defining role of his career.
Guinness also focused on 'respectable' roles in film and theatre, whereas Ian is a character actor who's always loved getting into more camp and over the top territory, he was clearly more receptive to the goofy nature of Star Wars and revelled in it. It also helps that Ian got along well with Lucas whereas there was some tension between him and Guinness, Mark Hamill helped smooth that over on the sets of ANH.
"I would have thought the emperor would have worn something a lot grander than a black cloak, I didn't really see the point of it" That's kinda a good point when you think about it. It is Surprisingly humble for a power Hungary Sith.
Psss, my respect to the Emperor, but George Lucas didnt start the prequels at some random time, he knew things were lining up, and Ian is clearly a serious and passionate artist, the passion of lucas and his whole crew is what made star wars great. The sequels involved so much backstabbing and disrespect toward actors’ characters, and sorry, daisy ridley seems like a total emotional ditz, not a stupid, a ditz
Also, i know lots of people knew palpatine was the emperor, but the kids growing up with the prequels didnt, and how often does someone wish others could tell this or that political figure is evil and not full of it, most people naturally jump to doing that, and lots of less dedicated star wars scholars came to see the prequels, and the scholars talk star wars with the other scholars, compartmentalized society is very real, even today, yet today its easier to deny that and still do it than ever yo
“I did speculate whether he would come back in another form and George said ‘no he’s dead’” This aged badly haha
It should have stayed that way. JJ Abrams fucked it up
Did it though ? 🧐
He's so pleasant to listen to.

Outshine Vader ?
Well it was only going up after mr chimp eyes from empire
The entire point is that he doesn't outshine Vader. Vader is the shiny, cool agent of evil and he's the puppetmaster pulling the strings.

Holy, ian McDarmid's voice is cool and soothig AF.
Palpatine is one hell of a character. Scary and intriguing at the same time. He makes a great villain. Great role for him. Marvelous Mr. Ian!

Super interview with an actor who is both very knowledgable and also a fan of the movies himself!
There needs to be one standalone movie about vader and palpatine before both Ian and James die
He must live he must stand trial!!!

The Senate: A Star Wars story.
There a few books about them together where they go on missions for Vader’s training.
Plenty of comics on that. Darth Plageuis focuses on Palpatine and it's great.
George: No he's dead!
JJ: Oh I don't think so
JJ's plot twist was based on a 3 sentence dialogue from revenge of the sith. haha
you aware he did come back in the EU as a clone right?
@@wwb16 he’s come back a few times depending on the comic but I’m fairly certain he was a wreath first

Jesus H Christ this guy's voice is so soothing it's insane. He should do ASMR or something lol
How has this only got 200 likes? Such an interesting interview. Great questions too!
Well said in the end.
And hopefully most new fans get to see the films in the intended order, beginning with episode 1

This is from another interview. Nice dude.
To be honest, I find Star Wars so simple back then.

Palpatine is said to abhor materialistic luxury and grandeur. In art, too, he prefers minimalism. This idea was explored in the Darth Plageuis novel.
