I feel bad for Lucas. I always hear him get hated on and yet he created the fricken universe that people are obsessed with. My intro to Star Wars was episode 1 and I loved it.

And actually, they have been ... in a way. Somebody on RUclips made his own version of the prequels that he calls "De-cheesed version". He cut out most scenes with Jar-Jar, rearranged some of the events, and kept it serious through out of the movie. I find it hilarious that somebody out there, a fan, made a better movie than pros George Lucas and Rick McCallum were able to do.

My oh my so much has changed since this interview. For one thing I have much respect and admiration for George Lucas. He is a legend, and nobody can deny that. I will forever respect George Lucas. Not only did he make one of the greatest films of all time (Star Wars, as a 6-part Soap Opera-Serial dubbed “The Tragedy of Anakin Skywalker”, finally completed in 2011 with the last of the OT Special Editions), he also created ILM, which helped make the CGI for The Abyss (1988), and a dozen more iconic movies 20 years before Marvel started making films. He’s also a vastly more interesting filmmaker that half of the top directors today. The man’s a pioneer of modern cinema, not only in terms of film as a visual and poetic art form but in special effects, etc., and I hope he will be respected and remembered as such. And no, I don’t blame him for selling Lucasfilm to Disney. I hope he’s able to make his own little movies now, even though I am a bit saddened at the prospect of the general audience probably never seeing them. George Lucas always has been and will continue to be my inspiration, the one I admire, the one I like to study, and a meaningful part of my love for cinema.

Lang and Kubrick also took the risks. George just made fairytale movies. Loveable but not on par with Kubrick, Lang. Méliès is a pretty accurate equivalent.
I always lean toward practical effects, but in the case of Yoda, I think ILM came up with something really special by the time they got to Ep. 3. Ep. 2 Yoda didn't look there yet, but the Ep. 3 animation, texturing, and lighting looks wonderful.
Say what you want about his filmmaking, directing, or editing, but one thing that nobody can take away from George Lucas is how much of a devoted and dedicated father he has been, ever since he first adopted Amanda way back when Return of the Jedi was being finished up. To raise one adopted child as a single father is something that says volumes about what kind of person he is, let alone three. I think George Lucas is a genius for inventing the World I escape to the most in my life, and I have additional respect for him as a human being for what he's done for those kids. None of whom were his paternal offspring to begin with, and still treated and raised better than most kids are. Whether they're raised by both of their own parents or not. And, to provide them with the best possible lives he's not only worked his A off creating multiple film making industries, from LucasArts, Lucasfilm, and ILM to the digital effects technology that would eventually become Pixar Animation Studios. In his efforts to avoid being constrained by the Hollywood Studio establishment, he's effectively become one of, If not THE, most influential and consequential Media "Moguls," in the industry today. No movie gets made to this day that hasn't passed through a Company that George Lucas wasn't involved or wholly responsible for inventing. (Just look at the credits following ANY movie you can think of, and if "Industrial Light and Magic," doesn't appear somewhere, as having some hand in helping the production, it's arguably not even a movie worth watching. And that's just I.L.M., which George Lucas was forced to create just so realizing his original Star Wars vision could be possible.) It's not enough to say he's set industry standards filmmakers are still working under today, because he literally invented those standards outright. All so he could provide the best possible life he could, by himself, for three children who he adopted. That's impressive. Most impressive. 👍
I still think he is right. There is no episode 7 or 8. So far I couldn’t tell you why this sequel trilogy exists and what it is about except tarnishing our original hero’s legacies.
George Lucas is the man. In my mind, Revenge of the Sith is pretty damn close to being a masterpiece. Too few people produce truly high quality tragedies these days. The only Star wars film I could argue as being better than Revenge of the Sith is the Empire Strikes back, though that question is of course completely subjective. Seeing this interview today, I cannot help but think that George Lucas would never have sold the rights to Star Wars to Disney if he had any idea that they were going to make the films the way they did. Even for 4 Billion dollars. You can see the attachment he holds for this series in his eyes. I am sure that Star Wars is an immense source of pride for him. This fact just makes me feel sympathy for Lucas, and makes me hate Disney, Kathleen Kennedy and J.J. Abrams to my bones, because these people dragged one of the best series ever made through the mud, for no apparent reason. Any sane individual could see that producing a trilogy with barely any original or creative content, literally recycling story lines and villains from the previous works almost verbatim, is a terrible idea. Even disregarding this, the story is not even coherent and consistent. Disney was so negligent that they clearly didn't even bother to create an outline for the trilogy before making the movies. Palpatine being brought back from the dead, beyond ruining the ending of the return of the Jedi, is proof of this half assed, unplanned approach to writing. Even within the trilogy itself, there is a tremendous amount of inconsistency, with each movie contradicting the film which preceded it. I seriously do not know what Disney was thinking. I could have written a far better story. Most people probably could have with the bar being so low. Anyway, I digress. George Lucas is the man. Disney has gone to the dark side. We should get our revenge by pushing through harsh anti-trust legislation ^_^.

For George, absolutely everything is secondary to his story, even the dialogue. This has been the case since a new hope. People act like somehow Episodes 1 and 2 are special but no, the dialogue has always been wooden since episode 4.

It was only when he wanted to do small films that weren’t going to make much money and would drag his company down that he thought about more Star Wars films and to sell his company while his story would be secured with who he thought would be the right people to tell the rest of his story. There are only 6 Star Wars films. Those are the only ones that matter. The remaining 6 he envisioned could possibly happen one day back in the 1970s won’t come to be.

George Lucas is just boss genius and knows the delicate balance between the business and the creative world, and is able to keep that focus and balance of his force to achieve success. If you are too business you lose track of the art. If you are too art you neglect the business. George Lucas got the delicate balance correct.

+Matt Consigli eh I'm not sure, I don't think his face really evokes the character - Hayden's voice, face and just general demeanour as the character was perfect for me. Especially in rots. Hayden gets a lot of shit and I don't understand it at all, I think he was excellent and can't imagine anyone else as anakin. The whole point is that he isn't Han Solo in a Jedi costume, you know, but that's what they want.

I love the original six Star Wars and Rogue One and you are so right, it doesn't matter what the film critics say, as long as you do what you want to do, because there are people out there who totally agree with you and appreciate what you've done, me being one of those people. The illustration of if you painted your house white, and some person tells you that it should be a green house, but you'd rather have it be white because that's just how you feel was perfect and makes total and complete sense. I always lean toward practical effects, but in the case of Yoda, I think ILM came up with something really special by the time they got to Ep. 3. Ep. 2 Yoda didn't look there yet, but the Ep. 3 animation, texturing, and lighting looks wonderful.

Say what you want about his filmmaking, directing, or editing, but one thing that nobody can take away from George Lucas is how much of a devoted and dedicated father he has been, ever since he first adopted Amanda way back when Return of the Jedi was being finished up.
To raise one adopted child as a single father is something that says volumes about what kind of person he is, let alone three.
I think George Lucas is a genius for inventing the World I escape to the most in my life, and I have additional respect for him as a human being for what he's done for those kids.
None of whom were his paternal offspring to begin with, and still treated and raised better than most kids are. Whether they're raised by both of their own parents or not.
And, to provide them with the best possible lives he's not only worked his A off creating multiple film making industries, from LucasArts, Lucasfilm, and ILM to the digital effects technology that would eventually become Pixar Animation Studios.
In his efforts to avoid being constrained by the Hollywood Studio establishment, he's effectively become one of, If not THE, most influential and consequential Media "Moguls," in the industry today.
No movie gets made to this day that hasn't passed through a Company that George Lucas wasn't involved or wholly responsible for inventing.
(Just look at the credits following ANY movie you can think of, and if "Industrial Light and Magic," doesn't appear somewhere, as having some hand in helping the production, it's arguably not even a movie worth watching. And that's just I.L.M., which George Lucas was forced to create just so realizing his original Star Wars vision could be possible.)
It's not enough to say he's set industry standards filmmakers are still working under today, because he literally invented those standards outright.
All so he could provide the best possible life he could, by himself, for three children who he adopted.

George Lucas is the man. In my mind, Revenge of the Sith is pretty damn close to being a masterpiece. Too few people produce truly high quality tragedies these days. The only Star wars film I could argue as being better than Revenge of the Sith is the Empire Strikes back, though that question is of course completely subjective.
Seeing this interview today, I cannot help but think that George Lucas would never have sold the rights to Star Wars to Disney if he had any idea that they were going to make the films the way they did. Even for 4 Billion dollars. You can see the attachment he holds for this series in his eyes. I am sure that Star Wars is an immense source of pride for him. This fact just makes me feel sympathy for Lucas, and makes me hate Disney, Kathleen Kennedy and J.J. Abrams to my bones, because these people dragged one of the best series ever made through the mud, for no apparent reason. Any sane individual could see that producing a trilogy with barely any original or creative content, literally recycling story lines and villains from the previous works almost verbatim, is a terrible idea. Even disregarding this, the story is not even coherent and consistent. Disney was so negligent that they clearly didn't even bother to create an outline for the trilogy before making the movies. Palpatine being brought back from the dead, beyond ruining the ending of the return of the Jedi, is proof of this half assed, unplanned approach to writing. Even within the trilogy itself, there is a tremendous amount of inconsistency, with each movie contradicting the film which preceded it. I seriously do not know what Disney was thinking. I could have written a far better story. Most people probably could have with the bar being so low.
Anyway, I digress. George Lucas is the man. Disney has gone to the dark side. We should get our revenge by pushing through harsh anti-trust legislation ^_^.
As far as dating, he wasn't single for much longer after this aired. He met his current wife in '06 and got married in 2013.

@@lordsidious83 The prequels had less cgi than the sequels, despite what JJ Abrams says. Regardless, the CGI isnt there in the prequels just to be CGI, they are merely tools to tell George's story. For George, absolutely everything is secondary to his story, even the dialogue. This has been the case since a new hope. People act like somehow Episodes 1 and 2 are special but no, the dialogue has always been wooden since episode 4.

It was only when he wanted to do small films that weren’t going to make much money and would drag his company down that he thought about more Star Wars films and to sell his company while his story would be secured with who he thought would be the right people to tell the rest of his story. There are only 6 Star Wars films. Those are the only ones that matter. The remaining 6 he envisioned could possibly happen one day back in the 1970s won’t come to be.

Hyperbolic naysaying of the sequel trilogy aside, it's weird seeing prequel promo stuff for the first time in 17 years; this has some serious bd-2000s energy & I love it. It's also nice to see ppl actually being in awe of CG instead of complaining about it (critiques of bad or overused in current films aside, & yes I know fans at the time thought Lucas used too much CG for the prequels) or not even reacting to it. It's these kinda interviews that keep reminding me of why I love Lucas & Star Wars so much. He doesn't seem interested anymore, or at least not making them available to the public, but I would love to see Lucas's experimental art films. That house painting analogy was great.
