I met John Williams once in LA at an LA Phil concert when he was walking around at the intermission. He was surrounded by a bunch of musicians from Venezuela that were there to see the concert as it was a collaboration with the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra.
I was dying of panic to come forward to him but this is the guy who wrote the Superman theme. How could I not?
I realized then that he was with his daughter and I made my way towards them and said: maestro, I don't mean to bother you, but I just need to say that you wrote the soundtrack of my childhood. Every time I hear the Superman theme, I turn 8. I wanna thank you for that.
He then looked at me and with a kindness I cannot even describe, he held my hand with both his hands and said in a santa like voice while sincerely looking at me in the eyes: oh you're such a kind young man! Thank you for your words!
His daughter, also super kind, said: would you like me to take a picture of you two?
You bet I said yes.
They thanked me again and went about their day.
It is one of my life's greatest moments and one who taught me, no matter how big, kindness always goes first.

@@OttophilWell, John's music has touched several generations, if you've never watched Harry Potter you obviously won't recognize it as his other themes, he played a big part on the success of the first 3 movies (3rd movie score is a masterpiece), so I say that's enough reason to watch it, as well as the presence of great british actors like Alan Rickman or Maggie Smith (my Great Uncle is 72 and is getting into it, he loves Star Wars and Jaws btw).

I know it's considered iconic at this point, and I am a huge fan of Williams' work in general. But I remember seeing the first Potter film in the theater and thinking the Hedwig theme sounded like a cartoony American impression of how a magical British world should sound. Like, a creepy music box tune? It just seems a little on-the-nose. (Also, note that he wrote it without reading the books.) Anyway, the tune has grown on me (I'm not a jaded teenager anymore) but it still think it's ham-fisted compared to Williams' other classics. Later directors used the theme more sparingly and went with simpler, less Hollywood-sounding arrangements, which I think helped.

We were lucky enough to have such beautiful childhood years. What makes them more beautiful is that most of our vivid childhood memories, dreams, silly thoughts about extraordinary things, characters and heroes outside of this world and reality are magically accompanied with the timeless music this great man has composed. A masterfully crafted soundtrack of our childhood that we will pleasantly look back on for years to come.

There are no words that can express how truly amazing John Williams is. Every single day I've listened to his music, throughout childhood, through school years into adulthood and now in my 30s. Each track is as magnificent as it was the first day I heard it and was mesmerised as a kid. He creates magic. Thank you John Williams!

Well, he's definitely brilliant, but is he a genius, or is his work derivative of other famous composers and compositions?
I'd wondered if he'd done a western and found he did _The Cowboys_ and before that _Wagon Train._ However, the former isn't as distinctive as Ennio Morricone's compositions for the Clint Eastwood movies _A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More,_ and _The Good, the Bad and the Ugly._ Instead it seems based on a piece by Aaron Copland. Also, Morricone brings in other sounds from other instruments including electric guitar, while I think Williams sticks to traditional instruments of the orchestra.
@@sandal_thong8631Experimental doesn't equate to genius. Morricone heavily borrowed from other musicians too, like every other composer in history. Moreover Williams has composed many more iconic scores than Morricone. Other than the Dollars Trilogy or Cinema Paradiso, can you name me any other popular soundtracks from him. No offence to Ennio though. Without him we wouldn't have Zimmer.
Also his score for DePalma's "The Fury" is extremely underrated as well
@@sandal_thong8631As George Lucas explained in the 1995 Pre Special Edition of Star Wars, he would actually write to music as a temp track and tell John Williams to write music similar to the grandiose theme he had in mind. And then John would write his own version based on that theme yes but there were many other themes that came on their own way.

He is a cinematic phenomenon. When you actually look at the film scores that he's done, not only are they incredible, but every one of his scores either enhanced the film, or dare I say it, makee the film.
His impact on cinema and audiences is immeasurable. Thank you, John. You made my childhood, and made me fall in love with movies.

Crazy that John is still alive and has worked as a pianist on "Some like it hot", one of the greatest films of all time, and a Marilyn Monroe movie at that! What a legendary career.

I prefer to give credit to the human rather than some imaginary deity. Incredible hard work, natural talent and a brilliant mind is what he possesses.
What a legend this guy is, he formed the soundtrack to most of our lives.

Hook is his most underrated score I think. I've never heard him talk about his work on it. "You are the Pan" is incredible.

In a way, I would consider Star Wars II and III and Harry Potter 3 his most underrated. Everyone knows how great they are but they are really top 10. Star Wars III is, in my opinion his best soundtrack ever.

John Williams and David Attenborough for me are treasures of humanity. Through their work they express of our joy, soul and wonder. I've never met John Williams but he appears such a humble, gentle person. Even my young kids learned Williams' music at such a young age - they know his work as well as any pop star. We are lucky that Mr Williams is still around to add brightness to the world.

This man can bring fandoms together, I went to film concerts where they played his themes, amounts of Harry Potter and Star Wars fans (including me), when I watched Harry Potter, I was already into Star Wars, Indiana Jones, E. T., Jurassic Park, etc. John Williams played a big part on it, I wish he still worked in the other movies (it's not like the other composers were bad), but I'm glad they kept the Hedwig's Theme throughout.

John Williams opened my eyes to classical music with Star Wars in 1977. Then I learned of other movies he had scored previously, and then always watched for him scoring the next movie. He is the Bach, the Beethoven, the Strauss of our time. 300 years from now orchestras will be playing his music. How fortunate we are to be alive while John is here to create these incredible scores. He will forever be part of history. His influence on me not only opened my eyes to classical music but also filmmaking, along with others. I wish I could encounter him one day just to shake his hand and give my profound thanks.

@@MusicismoreImportant - Yes, all great composers, but none of them have scored the number of films that John Williams did. He goes back to the mid-1950's and has scored movies since, including even films released in 2023.

I have had the privilege to see this man conduct live right in front of my eyes. The room was brought to tears because it was a tribute to Carrie Fisher and it was Leia's Theme. This man inspired the direction of my career while I don't work on the music side of things anymore, I don't think my life would've been the same if not for his music. My favorite scores of his are Catch Me If You Can, ET, and Memoirs of a Geisha.
When it comes to composers, he really is the GOAT. What he said prioritizing making a spiritual connection with the listener is exactly what he does. I appreciate this man harnessing his talents! I think I listen to his music almost daily.

I worked at the commissary at Disney corporate headquarters from 2016-2020. Basically the studio cafeteria. Every Disney employee from CEO Bob Iger to landscaping Mike came in. Countless famous actors, but no one made the entire commissary stop like when John Williams was there. Disney executives who make 6-7 figures in salary would whisper “that’s John Williams over there at the salad bar!”
Some people grew up on Motown, Classic Rock, whatever…I grew up on John Williams. Thank you sir for sharing your incredible gift with the world.

I'm sorry Maestro, but I have to correct you on one thing! It is not the theme parks that keep films like Jurassic Park in our hearts and minds, its your music! My childhood, like millions of others, was filled with your incredible music underscoring our favorite films. I picked up the violin as a kid because I wanted to be able to play some those incredible pieces that you composed! Today I am a music major, and we performed some music from "Home Alone" last Christmas with our Symphony orchestra! Thank you for getting myself, and countless other young people, interested in music!

@@Moodboard39 I think you misunderstand my comment, I am not saying that people watch music for the music, but that it is John Williams's music that makes many of these films memorable and keeps them in our hearts and minds. The plot of Star Wars is a basic hero's journey, (and draws a huge amount of inspiration from Dune) but the score makes it stand out as something unique and memorable. People may watch films for the story, but they remember them because of the music.

Recently re-watched JFK by Oliver Stone. Such a mesmerizing score to this day that is not talked about enough.

John Williams is one of the best composers of the 21st century . Also Hans Zimmer is great but he uses too same sounding in some of his themes.

@@ir8freeoh horner was special (may he rest in peace) and the rest are great, i just heard zimmer's score throughout Dune, Shore went iconic with LOTR but you can't become quite equal to John Williams. Trevor Rabin did Jerry Bruckheimer movie scores and i loved his music because i'm a fan of the genre he puts out and it was powerful music in those movies. Ramin Djawadi is rising the bar with movie and tv scores and his work on Person of Interest in particular was outstanding before he got to Game of Thrones popularity

This man is a cinematic legend and icon. The biggest personal sadness is the amount of times he has been nominated for the Oscar vs how many times he took one home. Given they are still bringing so much joy when they are played, and most are instantly recognizable, that is worth more to us as film and music fans than any award. What an amazing legacy and long may he continue!

I flew to New York last spring, last minute, with a girl I'd just met on Bumble, just so I could finally see John Williams conduct in person. We didn't find out until we were in our seats, that Spielberg was in attendance and would be giving his dear friend a tribute, as well. Tears were shed. John is a musical genius who has elevated so much art and who has touched so many of our lives. I hope there's more music in him and I can't wait for the documentary about him that Spielberg is working on!
The first album I ever bought? Six year old me BEGGED my dad to get the score for ‘star wars’ in 1977. As a double album, it was a bit pricey, but he obliged and I proceeded to play it to death. Took it overseas with me and whenever I needed a bit of a boost, I’d listen to it on my comically bad record player. Bought a second copy at a Salvation Army store in 1988. Then a tape copy, a cd copy and a few variants of. Along the way, I began to develop a series interest in music and particularly, its history. As I grew older, my collection of albums grew and grew and it’s a bit north of 5000 albums now, but of all the artists I love and treasure, John Williams has the single largest footprint in my collection with over 120 albums - and I treasure each and every one, always and forever.
(Second place goes to Led Zeppelin, btw, with 70+ albums, just in case anyone wonders. :)
What a humble smart talented young man. He deserves every award.

John Williams' body of work is absolutely staggering. Staggering. In the world of film scores he pretty much defined the seventies and eighties. He had many great hits beyond that of course, but those two decades especially belonged to John Williams. The world is a better place with him in it.
Living legend. We are lucky to have lived in the same generation as him.
His cue for the ark of the covenant in Raiders is absolutely transcendent. Probably my favorite film music of all time. Unbelievable
