They were hardly struggling. While not super rich, they also weren't in the "slums" as how Lewis sometimes claims (he's been called out by his community of Stevenage and they released a statement saying that they were disappointed by his claims). He went to a posh private sixth-form college. Lewis was scouted by Mclaren at age 12 or 13. And the guy never had to rough it out in backmarker teams. There are 20 drivers in F1. I believe 4 have dads who are Billionaires (Malzapin, Stroll, Latifi, Schumacher); And a few more who are multi multi millionaires who own engineering firms (Riccairdo), Financial wizards (Norris), retired racing drivers (Sainz, Verstappenen), Even the 'rags to riches' storyline guys are probably middle class to upper-middle class. Lewis's dad was in IT which pays well. Ocon's dad is a mechanic, but he owns a garage, not some low level hourly worker at a jiffy lube. There is a somewhat big error in the video, you don't need 40 points from race result, you need 40 points in 3 years on your super licence. For example, for winning the entire Formula 3 Championship you get 30 points on your super licence.
I was gonna comment the same thing. Further more if you Finnish 1-3 in the F2 championship you get 40 point. The Wikipedia page for Super License have a usable chart with how many SL points you get in the lower categories.
@@paulwallin5311 Yep! There's even videos talking about the chart and the points you can get in different race series that you participate. Chainbear did a video on it, I'll see if I can find it!

CORRECTION: Damon Hill wasn't rich when he started. All his dad fortune was lost in debts because of his dad's F1 team. He made it through partly on his own, and partly thanks to the connections that had his mum inside the motorsport establishement knowing she knew almost everybody there from the days when she was taking her husband lap times in the boxes at each race. That helped Damon a lot.
Almost the same for Lauda: his family didn't gave him a single penny to race, but his name helped him for sure to get loanes and help from other drivers and teams that were interested in his family fortune.
Thanks for the informative video. I think a lot of people forget that the worst of the worst on that race track may still be better than those they left behind (in other words they have to have some talent in them).
Some drivers actually come from very modest families though. I think Hamilton and Vettel did for example.
And specially Alonso, who's father was a coal mine worker and who's mother was a department store clerk. Supposedly, Alonso's parents couldn't afford rain tyres early on, so he ended up doing some kart races with slick tyres as a kid.
Yep. Alonso's dad used to drive him every weekend from their home in Oviedo to his karting races in Italy and they would drive back the many hours while Alonso slept to make it back by Monday for school. They did that until he was old enough to make the journey to Italy alone. They couldnt even afford to have his karts fixed when they broke down and had to fix it himself. At 14 yrs old he won the World Karting Championship on July 14 with the number 14 kart.
They barely had sponsors and if not for 1 former Spanish F1 driver who used to drive for Minardi, he wouldn't have gotten the sponsorship to move to F3000; where he was scouted by Briatore who then paid for him to drive in Minardi while being with Renault. He then moved to test driver where he tested for Renault and Jaguar.
Imo it forces you to actually a better driver with a worse kart which is why they make it to f1
