I bought his ebook ten years ago, and it’s one of the best out there...very detailed, with pictures...with a lot of repurposed materials to keep the price around $5k
I've been following you since you started..... I'm still so jealous of your cabin... I'm a single guy too with a girlfriend out of town... still want the simple lifestyle..i purchased your offgride e-book years ago
you don't have to explain yourself or your life to anyone. You have an amazing home. I hope to have one like it some day. I've slept on my couch for years despite having a big comfy bed. The bed in my van is just like a couch but comfier. 😀
Its going so great. i love living in this van. in a couple of weeks im wanting to put in the permanent walls and ceilings now that I have identified where window leaks are and am fixing them. its awesome to know it can rain as hard as it wants but I'm still comfy and dry inside. In act its raining raining right now. lol👍
dude...you are just too cool! You are so cute...all embarrassed, and trying to apologize for your bachelor lifestyle, afraid you would offend someone...Awwww! Don't you worry your sweet face, my dear...looks like a real comfy homestead to me! You have got your shit together! Wish the rest of the USA. could say the same. Thanks for sharing! Luv your channel, and I am trying to stay in shape a bit, because I know that someday, I will have to build my own tiny home! xo
I did a painting back in jr high school involving a small log cabin with an old style wood fence along the pasture with lots of trees around it. Never figured I would end up getting property like that to build my own on, but I did!
I give you a lot of credit. I don't have the knowledge to build a home with a solar system and a bathroom etc. I feel a little overwhelmed just thinking about it. lol I would take the easy way out and hire someone......PS your mom sounds like she was a lovely person and a good mom. Thanks for sharing.
Lamar nice to see you back. One thing that works really well is what my grandpa called an air lock or vestibule off the back door. It helps prevent drafts, a cold or hot rush of air into the house and can be a small place to keep shoes and coats. You see them on almost every old farmhouse including mine circa 1900. I bey you could build one cheap and it would be a great video.
I enclose my front porch with plastic in winter to create a solarium for that purpose but a small mudroom off that back porch is a good idea and I will think on it.
Great ideas at your place LaMar. Your videos have been my primary inspiration. Also bought your books and some for family. Can't wait to do what you're doing!
Thanks for showing us around. I like your cabin and admire you for what you are doing and inspiring others. You have inspired me!! I don't know where to begin, but I guess the first thing is I have to have some place to put it. That would require finding some land. I guess i better start looking.
I think your cabin is just perfect and it suits you. I love when a home is “lived in” verses those places that you don’t feel comfortable in. If I visited with you I would feel totally welcomed and happy to be there. Thank you for sharing your home and I really like what your doing with the house plans and such. Going to have to get me at least one of your plans, I especially like that the come with a materials list.
First off, you don't have to apologise for being you! I can truly identify with your ideas. I plan to build a small house/cabin on my 30 acres to get away from all the confusion going on in the world today. I have a septic system and access to electric so I won't be completely "off-grid". I like the idea of recycling the RV appliances and things. I won't have a loft, just a one level building. About the same size, though. 12x16 is my planned size. Build it by KISS standards, Keep It Stupid Simple. Doesn't need anything fancy for me. Thanks for sharing!
@@solarcabin Awesome! I'm glad to see some new updates on the site! By the way, where I live building anything under 10sqm is very easy and requires essentially no permissions or permits. Do you have any small designs that fit in this space?
It's cute! I would never want a loft - I'm too clumsy... I'd probably fall lol. So I like that daybed so you can sleep downstairs. I could live in a place like that.
I have a loft bedroom which was fine when I was younger but now I sleep on a day bed downstairs and that is why I designed this to be used either way. The loft would be good storage space for your seasonal gear.
I saw a tiny house design that I thought was brilliant. There was a set of stairs on the left that went half way up to a platform (same width as the stairs.) At the end of the platform was a closet. Then there was a loft bed on the right side that was a couple feet higher. So instead of climbing a ladder to get into a 4' high loft, you could actually stand up on the platform and get into the bed from there. And the bonus is that you only have to go up 4-5 steps to get to the platform. I have no idea how big your loft is. Probably regular height, but for low 4' high lofts, this works out great.
I have a design of my cabin with stairs and a side door instead of the back door. When I get time I will post those plans. I don't think stairs would be any easier with my knee but might help other people.
I think your cabin looks nice. The older we get I don’t believe material things mean as much as we thought we had to have. It’s just more of a burden to take care of. It’s like my daughter tells me, Mom we are coming over to visit you! She knows I was very meticulous with my house cleaning back before I had to under go several types of surgeries. You are fortunate enough that you can still get out and do things you like to do. For me it’s about having family time together. And my son has turned out to be a wonderful cook and he cooks healthy delicious meals! If I had a choice I definitely would choose off grid living. I have a husband who has Alzheimer’s and one of his kids lives close by and I don’t want to deprive him of his father. But I definitely have brothers and sisters that live off grid in very humble homes.or Mobile Homes.
Thanks Mae! I watched my father and mother go through aging and illness so I am trying to prepare my place so I can live here as long as I can and take care of myself. My best to you and yourn.
I can understand that. I have primary progressive multiple sclerosis, the one that doesn't go into remission. I just want a simple life to live while I can.
Your life sounds like mine but I stay home more than I should. But rather than go off grid I'm in the city don't need to go out much when I do I usually drive less than a mile. I have off grid equipment for emergency.
I had three chairs in my house; one for solitude, two for friendship, three for society. When visitors came in larger and unexpected numbers there was but the third chair for them all, but they generally economized the room by standing up. It is surprising how many great men and women a small house will contain. I have had twenty-five or thirty souls, with their bodies, at once under my roof, and yet we often parted without being aware that we had come very near to one another.
I have a bar stool, one chair and my day bed for seating in the cabin but 2 rocking chairs on the porch and that is where I usually sit and entertain guests. Also some Adirondack chairs around my fire pit. Never a lack for something to sit on and the outdoors is my living room.
I was on your website and I am interested in purchasing the off grid package. My question is the download able to be viewed on a iPad? Good stuff you got going on.....
I have been using the Alpicool C20 12 volt fridge/freezer for 2 years now and it is fine for a couple of people. ruclips.net/video/mUwW0Fn-bNQ/видео.html
You mean the poles holding up the porch? They go all the way to the ground and sit on cement pads. I used 6 inch spikes through the lumber in to those poles to tie it together.
I had planned on an addition off the back for a spare bedroom when I was still using the loft but now that I moved downstairs I really don't need an addition and would increase property taxes and be another room to heat. I may build a small mudroom with a tub off that backdoor though. I am thinking on it.
It is great to see ya back! But i thought that you were going to build onto the rear of the cabin to give yourself a bedroom & a place to place a freezer?
I had plans to build an addition for a spare bedroom and work space when I was still using the loft but now that I moved downstairs I revamped that to suit my needs. I may still build a small mud room with a tub off that back wall. Any addition raises your property taxes so if I do it I will have to keep it small and on the sly.
L’amour what happened to your cabinets used to have closed cabinets then you did an upgrade and you went to open cabinets and you were so proud of them and now you are back to close in cabinets

Looking to the modern Thoreau interpretation
It's coming along well. I have the new Thoreau cabin designed and just putting it together with my observations on Thoreau.

Man!

This + a Garden and that's my _Dream!_

Try a wool blanket over your door. This works great for us! Have a good day!
Place looks good! Been a sub for years. I’m curious how the trees you planted are doing ?
I got a few small apples last year so hoping for a better yield this year and planting some new trees.
Been awhile.. good to see you again.

Hey Lamar, what would you recommend for a solar refrigerator
Thanks

Don’t feel like reading through all the comments because I am sure someone asked but what state is your cabin in? Thanks
Your place is excellent! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you!
Fantastic
Very nice 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Do you still surround your porch with plastic in the winter?
Yes, every winter so my genny will start and helps heat the cabin.
I enjoy your channel. Thx
So I'm wondering, how much is the average cost for this in 12/2020?
If you can find windows and doors he materials will be around $3,000 to $3,500 depending on your area and foundation used.
Hello Lamar, What is the roof pitch of your cabin?
Looks good!
L’amour what happened to your cabinets used to have closed cabinets then you did an upgrade and you went to open cabinets and you were so proud of them and now you are back to close in cabinets
I had open shelves first which got very dusty so I saved up and got those closed cabinets. More storage space and no dust problems now.
I remember after you did that you were so proud of them cabinets but I can understand the ducst issue to
How do you do laundry?
I have a micro washer and spin dryer.
You are a very neat bachelor😋
Wow, thanks
Love it!
There was enough hair under there to build another dog! Lol 😄
It's been a while. How you doin'?
Doin OK Joseph. best to you and your'n.
Do you let your dog stay inside with you. My dog lives inside with me.
Been watching you a long time I pretty much set my off grid cabin up the same way as you check out its on my RUclips channel
Down sizing lol your so funny You cannot get much smaller and less you move into a little camper travel trailer like you used to live in
Wait until you see my Modern Thoreau 8x12 cabin plans. I could easily downsize and live comfortably in that!
Theyre NOSEY.
