If you told someone you could get a house in NZ for this price with reclaimed, craftsman-made kauri joinery...they would laugh at you! The respectful, beautiful use of reclaimed, irreplaceable native timber makes it one of the most beautiful tiny houses I've ever seen. Not something most people looking to build a TH could afford, but it's a work of art. And nice to see the guy wants to use his craftsman experience to help younger people like me struggling to pay rent in Auckland get their own tiny house. Awesome work mate, it's a thing of beauty.

Something to keep in mind is that this home is built to be off grid, so for the most part the money you will save in some of the utilities you will make up your investment quicker. I love this mate. There may be some on a small scale, but I truly wish America would catch on to minimal living. I took to it while working in Asia and Europe several years ago. I currently live in a studio flat, which functions well for my lifestyle. friends don't understand it, but when you have the consumption mindset, and living above and beyond means, you cannot grasp that living small allows you to do others things that matter.

    • @maggiefriedrichs777
      @maggiefriedrichs777 7 лет назад +1

What a coincidence! I used to design the interiors for mega-yachts, and am now working on a design tool for people who want to build their own tiny houses. I'm trying to make it so an average handy person can build their own home at a minimal cost. There are a lot of tricks us boat builders can bring to the table! That shower is similar to the one in our house -- I sloped the floor towards the shower beyond the shower so there's no curb, it drains back into the shower. We do use a curtain though 😉

  • @AnimosityGamers

$77,000 for this seems pretty good. I mean it could be MUCH cheaper but literally everything in this place looks custom. I'd say if you didn't do everything custom OR you did the custom work (for those of us who are good with our hands) + salvaging some material (alot of wastage in a reg house would do your whole space), you could build it for $30,000 - $40,000 maybe less if you did it over a few years. Solar is also a nice touch for off the grid (initially expensive though) but if you could rent a lot in a local park with electrical/water hook up for $1500 - $2000 a year it would be a nice home for a 1st time buyer. Not to mention if you planned around adding solar power to it and left some space for it then you could live in it on a serviced lot while you added the solar to it over time. I love idea and will probably make a cabin like this later in life, I need more room currently because I want children.

I cannot believe how gorgeous the interior of this home is... I love sailboats... I personally have loved the old Hinckleys for 15+ years and tiny homes for 8 years. I would love to have a touch of the boat woodwork in my tiny house! I am in love with this one! My tiny has the same color scheme and a few boat touches like the hatches and "bedside table" storage.

Many here do not see the value in this build. At $77K US. it does sound expensive. That is very true, but also 99% of tiny homes are not built to this level of fit and finish.. This really is living in the homes of the rich and famous for $77,000 American Dollars.. I live in Florida in a home built in 1988. 7 years ago we bought and remodeled it. Most of the house interior only received new paint and flooring. New kitchen and 2 bathrooms got the works. We are under 2000SF and put more than $80K into it doing the work ourselves with only about $6K worth of outside help. And believe me, we did NOT fit and finish to this level... And no, we do not live in a big money area... We also do not have solar or skylights or a deck that wraps half way around our house.. That decking material alone had to be over $3K!!! BEFORE the time of cutting and welding the frame and putting down the decking..
Also, how much time was put into the planning of this build?? Those of you who think 77K is too much, well, you try to build it as this is built and tell me how you can get it done for under $77K... (AND MAKE ANY PROFIT)!!!

Dont forget higher minimum wages, geographical isolation and smaller economics of scales make things in New Zealand comparatively and generally more expensive than in the US

This was the builder's first tiny home build and he himself said it wasn't his ideal project because he didn't get much fulfilment from building for the rich and famous. His intention is to do it for the personal fulfilment of making homes affordable for young people at less cost than this. Sounds like he intends doing this kind of build to scale in future so the costs should come down. As a first project it's fantastic.... especially for a guy who only ever built boats.

This is not just awesome this is an amazing art! I have a challenge for you Jeff. I'll tell you a little bit about me first. I was diagnosed with a disease that attacks basically my own immune system. I get sick a lot and I have a wheelchair on standby all the time. Of course bills can be extremely difficult and things can get pretty difficult around here. My question is have you ever built a tiny home with one floor only, with wheelchair accessibility? I cannot do stairs at all. So basically in my mind I have created something like a box. And then maybe perhaps the middle could be a garden I don't know. I won't waste wanted to live in a tiny whom, I just don't know if it's feasible.

+Mary Carlone Hey. I think since you need space for your weelchair to turn there wouldn't be space to put a garden in the middle... I am no professional but I would love to help you with ideas if you want and it would be great to see your final home in the future. I have never seen a tiny house for wheelchair owners but why shouldn't it work? I think it's a great idea.

The house builder is right about people not wanting to do housekeeping work anymore. It's a point that is rarely mentioned when I see discussions about tiny houses. We all grew up taking for granted that house chores must be done. But we never stop to think just how many hours we spend on house maintenance every week. A bigger house than we need can really take over our lives ... not just financially but also in time devoted to its upkeep. Small house living makes so much sense in so many different ways. It's a no brainer.

What a beautiful house! In Canada even an itsy bitsy condo can set you back about $200 000. Mind you, that's in Canadian dollars. Not sure what that is in NZ cash. But the point is not a lot of single people can whistle up that amount for a mortgage.
I would love to see whole neighbourhoods of tiny houses, full of happy people who can actually afford what they're living in.
This house is attractive, as well as full of very smart features. The buyer is a lucky lady!

+suvariboy Egad! How is a single person supposed to arrange a mortgage that they will live long enough to pay off!!?? I'm not talking about a big three bedroom condo with wrap around balcony. What if all you want is a little studio with good TTC access? I'm on welfare, and have had to live in scary, dangerous situations. And as a realtor you know the housing situation in the GTA is dreadful for low income people. Where are people supposed to live????

+Sandra Nelson I live on the west coast. Victoria BC Canada, and a bachelor suit to rent will run you 800 plus dollars a month. And that's for a bottom tier one with no parking or amenities included. As a single person I could NEVER in a million years afford to own here. Tons of people from China and the far east have come to Canada to stash their cash away in property, sometimes paying 2x list price for houses in places like Vancouver. It means the normal working people like myself have no chance at all to own our own home.

Everyones gonna start living in tiny house neighborhoods that have tiny houses stacked on tiny houses some would say thats an apartment... but no apartments are waaaay bigger then these... I live in a 2 bedroom condo with the traditional stairs on the side setup and I am disabled and I cannot keep up with it and have to hire help to clean. If I lived in one of these tiny houses I would have no problems keeping it clean until I'm in a wheelchair which will be in about 15 years. I'm 34 now.

you guys realize that this is in Australia right? where the minimum wage is literally $17.29 an hour. the $7.25 American wage cannot be compared directly. $120k AUS would be a little less than 7000 hours at minimum wage. your $30k USD would be a bit more than 4100 hours at minimum wage. and that 30k house would be a shithole, or in the middle of nowhere. not to mention it would not be self sufficient, nor portable.
this dude said he put well over 2000 hours into it. he definitely gave her a deal on his time, he is most definitely not minimum wage skill.
also, "an ugly box" ok, so what kind of shape would you like to have, and still be practical on wheels and still be street legal? the outside was not ugly at all, and the inside is absolutely gorgeous. plus all the technology hes got in there. this thing is 100% offgrid. you do not need water or power hookups.

not a chance bro. an actual house needs a foundation, electrical run throughout the house for every switch, outlet and light fixture, plumbing, abide by more building codes, HVAC all kinds of extra stuff. in a tiny house you can adapt. so if you're over spending on these homes it's probably because you have expensive tastes and are missing the point of a small home. to me a tiny home is cutting away all but the necessities

2400 hours to build this thing! That's crazy. He can't make a decent living doing that. For that level of craftsmanship he should be charging at least $65/hour if not more which would bring this thing to $156000 just in labour. Of course nobody would pay that much in labour for such a small space so...he's screwing himself.
Aside from that, the place is incredible.
