The range and quality of her voice is so incredible, as well as the control she has over all of it...but when it comes transitions, whistles and lows (for a soprano) she's truly outstanding.

I love that lower harmony run before the third whistle. I think it’s a nice musical choice - I don’t see that as sloppy at all.
She meant it was sloppy because it wasn't fluid. Not the notes themselves

Her runs only get better as the years go by and she discovers newer aspects of her voice!
You should check out her performance of Can't Let Go at SNL or If it's over at SNL 1992. They're some of her best performances.
Also, Butterfly at David Letterman 1997 is a beautifully difficult song she wrote mostly in her head voice and it's great live! I'd love to see your opinions on that

I do think her runs are great here as well, just one was not as precise as the others. I see it as a great reminder that these are live vocals, and it’s so impressive! Mariah masters vocal runs perfectly both when it comes to agility and musicality, there’s no doubt about that.

Some interesting trivia, I think Mariah usually avoids doing the upwards scale into the whistle on the bridge, opting for a lower run then jumping to the high whistle at the end. I figured it's because it's probably extremely difficult to accomplish and, as you noted, she pretty in-control of where she is and where she's going on stage. The recording of this song was very playful and she and the other producers were just experimenting with her vocals and that high register. That crazy upward scale probably came from all of this experimenting and may not be the most reliable to do live (Or it could be a little straining to do). There could be one or two live performances where she does do the upwards scale, though, not sure. Great reaction!
Mariah has always have a good solid background singers. Except for that one moment (somebody's doing the wrong note)
I LOVE her backing vocalists, and the arrangements are amazing! Mariah knows how to layer and it’s one of my favorite things about her music (apart from that stunning voice).

Actually where you said she fumbled, that is a legit voice part in a harmony. If you sing it against the melody, it creates a harmony and none of the notes were out of tune.
but to your point, it may seem like it was a path she wasnt planning on going musically, as perhaps evident in her eyes

It's true. We are not deserving.... To be honest, I lost track of MC once she accumulated some drama in her life. But This Mariah is truly a Diva in the best sense of that word. She is one of the female vocalists who has set the bar for all others. Who, in their right mind, would cover this song after this? Unless it was a reggae version 😏 Mariahesque is the ultimate compliment one could give to someone in her genre.

My grandfather in that generation was from Eidsvoll in Akershus, and my grandmother from the same generation was from Vang in Oppland. Going back, the lines were spread out to other counties. My great grandma on my paternal grandfather’s side is the only one with Norwegian ancestry; otherwise I’m pretty mixed with 3/4 European backgrounds (including Germany, Russia, Italy, Romania, the UK, etc.) and 1/4 African background (Igbo, Mandinka, Mbundu, and Kongo), so I consider myself biracial

Agreed. I was waiting when Mariah did a sloppy run here cause I know she actually did have some sloppy runs but it was rare. That "sloppy" run here was not sloppy at all, it was accurate in pitch and very fast, just fast enough to be mistaken as sloppy if not slowed down.
Lol that note was sloppy because it wasn't exactly smooth and almost pitchy but not because she saved it. hear it again. She didn't say it still wasn't good. But it wasn't perfect and clearly not what Mariah wanted because any other performance of the song has her doing the "middle" run better.
@@snareyshot2879 Ok this was confusing but after reviewing it, I think I agree that it was almost pitchy. But I don't think it was sloppy at all, 'cause there's still a distinction between each note in this 5-note run. Sloppy would be like totally messy but here, I can still hear each note. Just a little bit pitchy on that last vowel.
The notes were all very distinct but the pitch on the last 3 notes of the run were quite off, making it a bit sloppy

I kinda (just kinda) have an issue when you use the word "tasteful" when you refer to those growls, because as favorable as your review here on Mariah, my mind automatically goes to Jennifer Holliday and how you may say that her growls are not tasteful, to which then i would reply, "who are we to judge that.." Tastefulness is a personal thing and while you are very much entitled to your opinion and that which i respect, I am curious to understand as to what does and what doesn't constitute your idea of tasteful growls
