  • Recently truckers have been speaking out about some accidents and lack of overall truck parking. I will tell the truth about this in the Sunday Rant. We don't get a pass on this just because we deliver everything in America. If you park somewhere unsafe that is on you, not the government. You don't get a pass on this just because of elogs. We need to stop making excuses for being unsafe and but this burden where it belongs which is on the trucking companies. Stop early and make them find you a place to park their truck.

If driver’s would stop trashing parking lots with pee bottles and poop bags we would have more parking

Trash has very little to do with parking issues. If picking up trash helps I’m willing to wake-up 20 minute early and collect all pee bottles.
Every town has zoning ordinances and businesses can’t allow their property to be used other than what it’s intended for, businesses like Walmart gets up to $50k fines in some cities for allowing trucks to be parked in car lots.

I get angry at the piss bottles lining the side of the highway. Take better care of your surroundings drivers!
I actually do agree with the parking issue and drivers not parking safely. I plan out my day and even the next hour when I am getting close to my planned destination. Having my truck over the line and in the travel lanes is never an acceptable option.

Urine bottles getting littered in Oregon got so bad in the late 90’s they passed a new law fining a person 1K if caught throwing it on the ground at the time the law passed the state said it cost $25.00 per urine bottle to dispose of because it’s considered biological waste.

One of the biggest issues with the ramp parking is people think they need to leave their lights on. I was taught when I first started driving if you park on the side of the road to turn off your lights because at night people follow the light. If the company is giving you a ridiculous timeline tell them you need some more time to get the load there reschedule appointments whatever you need to do.

Route planning is just as important as fueling, but it is becoming a lost art.

My company already has a policy saying that you must park in a "Safe Haven". Which means in a parking spot. Not on the shoulder, ramps, etc... Then they'll tell you to pre-trip your drive better, to include your stops. Knowing that truck stops fill up early means you plan for, not nearly enough parking.

When I did OTR in the early 90's, there was ALWAYS somewhere to park. I don't know exactly what happened after I went to "turn" style job. I agree that there is not enough enough parking and 7 times the amount of trucks now. Why isn't the government doing something by now?

First, there's NO reason to park on an exit ramp, where people are exiting the highway at speed. They should make that illegal in all 50 states.
Second, there's absolutely NO F**KING REASON anyone should be parked on the side of the interstate. Short of a blown steer tire, or catastrophic engine failure. That should be an automatic license suspension.

Well shoot. Truckers park in places they shouldn't because really. Where are they going to go? I remember team trucking down near Alburqueque NM. Trying to stop at a pretty sizeable truck stop. But every inch of that was jam packed. Where are you supposed to go? No matter where you stop you're going to be in the way. Dispatchers can't do crap about it. Mind you it was for a quick change of the drivers but still.

Part of good trip planning, is to plan when and where you will take your breaks. If you feel you'll be taking your breaks after hours, then reserve parking, if you have to. Find out if shippers/receivers allow overnight parking. Use Google maps/satellite view to see if Walmarts/large lots allow truck parking. Use trucker apps to find parking. We have more tools now, than before. Use them.

Uh where do want Drivers to "Park" to put this request in writing? This is a no win decision, NO MATTER the solution. It's never going to be fixed. Been out here 12yrs, it's getting worse not better. Stopping, finding a place to park to harass your dispatch over this? That's your solution? Parking in a lane of travel is a no no in every state. Parking on shoulders on ramps, like the Police do in some areas is permitted. Running into a Rest Area at high speed, yes ramp speed is posted is a recipe for disaster. Dispatch at 0200am is non existent at most companies. Mark you are not totally wrong but you are further wrong than right. Get Foreign Drivers off our Roads might help. Can not read, speak or comprehend English means ROAD WARNINGS are useless. Check the Accident Stats on that.

If sum1 drivers where to use their head when parking, like leave there running lights ON.
A good portion of these incidents more than likely be avoided all together.
If you are tired and haft to park, in a area where your not able to see your own truck and or trailer. Put your running lights on. A ounce of prevention goese a long way.
