Thank you Jay....very useful information. Most important item on bike..pay attention to it and replace tires a little early than late..check pressure often and inspect tires for damage, nails..etc...
Tire's are a personal opinion. I had a set of Dunlap's that lasted a little under 4K. I commute a 100 mile's a day and I check inflation once a week. BTW those Dunlap's were the original tire's on 2009 Aprilia Shiver. I put a pair of Metzeler's on it. I have 5K on it and they still look great. Handle better too. I also put them on my FZ 1. I have used the Met's for years. they cost but you get what you pay for. Yes, some will complain about them. I love them.
Wow.... My tires are over 10 years old. I bought the bike '05 model with only 1,9@# miles last year. Tire still looks good and my mileage is over 4,000 now... I had no idea how short life the motorcycle tires have... I really thank the lord for watching over me... My new tires are arriving by mail.
Great vid Jay! There's another type of wear, typical of inexperienced riders, what i call squaring, when you see the tires (especially the front) flattening in the middle and making a sort of squared profile. Even if your riding skills improve, your riding is bad with that sort of tires
Good advice, I use it whenever I check my bike. I'm also in the market for some new tires for my Suzuki sv650sf, and I'm wondering if I can get the longer lasting touring tires in lieu of the regular sport tires. I understand that they have less traction than a stickier sport tire would, but I simply do not have the money to spend on tires. My riding style is very casual, non aggressive, and some input would be nice.
The tread is the actual rubber that contacts the road the grooves that are molded into the tread are referred to as the pattern. Slick tires still have tread they just don't have pattern. Just a terminology pet peeve of mine. Cheers ken
GREAT GREAT GREAT.... I just replaced my BMW R1150RT tires with Michelins Pilot III and the difference was night and day.... The Meltzer's should have been replaced thousands of miles before, with cupping and circumferential ridge...
You don't mention anything about how old the tires are. They can have plenty of tread on them, but if they've sat in a garage for 3 years they can be hard and lack grip. Born on date!
I very much respectfully disagree (as do MANY other riders I know). If you are a street rider, unless you solely ride canyons, it is next to impossible NOT to square off tires. If you use your bike to go on long trips, highways, or maybe you live in a place with very straight or slight turns only, you will square off tires. It depends on what you use your bike for, and it has very little indication of the experience of riders. I do agree with your choice of tire though, BT-016 Pro's are great!
My question is. I just bought a boulevard 2006. The dealer the dealer brought it to there other shop to service it before I pick it up. My only concerns. Mostly were with the tires. There going to go head and inspect it there at the shop as well they r a licensed inspection stastion as well here in massachusetts. Or i can have inspected my self. He said they would change. The tires if it needed it. My fear is if i let them inspect it maybe they will pass it. Or should i just have my guy inspect. Indpection is free if they do it. I did use a penny upside. Down to check the tread in the middle of the tire. Front tire is bearley above the writing on the very too of the penny...back tire a little bit better but still not to the top of Lincolns head. The penny was inserted up side down in the tread
Thanks man! I run a ride those goes 400 miles one way on my gsxr and it seems that its really wearing out my tired flat as in its squaring off is there a good tire thats out there that can be used for long rode trips as well as still take turns very sharply? Thanks!
Thank you! The treads in the middle of my back tire are worn down and gone yet the sides look great. Nothing else is wrong with it. I ride it daily to work Mon-Thurs. Do I need new tires? (Also what is a good back tire for a Ninja 250R 2010?)
My rear tire looks like the one on top of the stack. I think i shall replace it then. (it's more then 5 years old now and doesn't hold its pressure like it should) It's also tricky when wet. (aquaplaning)
is it possible to fix a nail hole in a rear tire yourself? A friend just bought a new one, and has a nail in the center of it. He doesn't have the money to take it in to fix it. Also, how do u get stripped hex bolts out? My seat bolts are stuck and almost completely stripped. Needless to say, I have to get them out because my battery is under there. Please help! Thanks
so what those it mean when my front tire is experiencing small cracks between treads but the side wall is fine. and thread life is fine just little cupping too.
What kind of miles did you have on those Michelin PR-2 tires? I've got 10,000+ miles on a pair of Diablo Strada's. All riding is one up semi-agressive on a Kawasaki ZZR on HOT Florida highways. Rain performance is much better than the Batlax tires that came on the bike. However, the Brigestone Batlax tires had better grip on twisties. "Not many of those in Florida". The rear tire has gotten a bit smooth in the middle but not bad enough yet to be dangerous. Looking for a new tire now.
I have a front tire that I stored in two layers of garbage bags, but the date shows that it was manufactured in 2005. There is no visual signs of deterioration, what is your opinion? It is a sport bike tire, 120/70 ZR 17 thank you.
Yes it is possible...Go to pepboys, autozone and get a bolt extractor kit for like 20 bucks... drill a bigger whole and then just tap that extractor inside and after slowly remove bolt. I did this on my bike and it came right off.
you said "bump or indentation." For what it's worth: a "bump" is Concave. An Indentation is Convex. Therefore, the wear indicator is a "bump" and NOT an indentation. That said............nice video.
My motorcycle tyre (Bridgestone Battlax) is 4 years old. I dont ride often and the threads are in good condition. Is it safe to use the tyres or do I need to change?
Got a ?. I got a 2000 zx600r kawasaki i let my friend use it and he ended up hitting a curb. the front tire now has a slash on the outer edge but it didn't go all the way in and i can still ride it. now my ? is should i change my tire or keep it? there is no air coming out of it.
Hey, I have a Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa rear tire and the last 15 mm from the edge of the tire have become slightly blue'ish tire stil has 3-4 mm of thread on it would you consider it still safe to use the tire for normal road riding if i'm going to use the full shoulder of my tire / ride on the blue area?
No man! Tires expire, and for street bikes it makes a big difference. They are probably dried out and cracked. Tires have to be properly stored, too. When you change them you'll feel the difference. And I bet you'll ride that gixer more often! Cheers P.S. I highly recommend Bridgestone BT0016 . Or S20 (latest model)
@kd4ysi Yeah i always find that odd. I understand Motorcycle tires are softer than car tires but still only 3 to 5k miles?thatd be like changing tires every two months
excellent video and thankyou for the video....with that said...if someone needs to be told when to change motorcycle tires, well then maybe they shouldn't be riding at all. Motorcycle riding is 100% commen sense and if that commen sense needs to be taught before they ride, then they are going to be a casualty. Which is going to put more laws on us that have commen sense. So please if you have a MS or Dr. degree Please for all of us DO NOT RIDE A MOTORCYCLE because you have NO COMMEN SENSE!!!
+blah LOOKS verses the BUMP coming (yes it will) made me CRY like a BITCH all the way to the store for regular rims AGAIN! Learn from others MISTAKES unlesss you dont care about MONEY:)
You can't compare the two. The dynamics of a car means you can do the low profile thing. You could change the rear rim & come down 10-20% on the profile but it will be expensive!
Hi I have a 2006 NINJA 250, the previous owner haven't change the tires since new, back in 2006, but he barely use it too. When I bought it, it only had 900 miles bit the tires. The tires look new, but with a little cracks on the front tire. So how long do you thibk my tires will last
***** It will probubly last a long time since as rubber ages it gets harder. A harder tire will last longer. But, it isn't really safe since this hardness can mess up the way the tire was originally designed to function. It will not turn, accelerate or stop the way it should.
I just put a new set of michelin pilot sport's on my 900rr, what psi should i have front and rear, no track days just fast road riding. Anyone any idea's?
Awesome video. You give great explanations! Thanks for the video!
Great video! Only think I would change is higher camera resolution to see conditions better. Awesome explanations.
Thank you Jay....very useful information. Most important item on bike..pay attention to it and replace tires a little early than late..check pressure often and inspect tires for damage, nails..etc...
Great presentation. Very informative.

Thanks Jay. Good video. Very informative. Questions answered. I just changed tires this morning. Now glad I did.
most comprehensive video on motorcycle tier ware I've seen, A+, thanks!
I would like to thanks yuo very much for placing this video on youtube it is very detailed and instructive. thanks

Forreall i ride every day out on just under 5k miles in 5 months and i am changing rear tomorrow. Ive heard fronts last twice as long
Thanks for this video, am looking to buy a used motorcycle and this info will come in handy.
Great vid Jay!
There's another type of wear, typical of inexperienced riders, what i call squaring, when you see the tires (especially the front) flattening in the middle and making a sort of squared profile.
Even if your riding skills improve, your riding is bad with that sort of tires
Thank You Jae your explanation is very clear
old but gold video
Very helpful video, thanks alot.
I'm just wondering, do cars have that bump in the tire aswell?
I’m close to but not on the wear lines so I still have a few months but I might as well get it done and dealt with.
Good advice, I use it whenever I check my bike.

Great job, jake. Thanks for the excellent info.
Very informative. I look forward to the HD version of your video... hint, hint!
wear a mic next time. thanks for the video, this actually could save someone's life! good job

Thanks Jay, very informative video. And for the haters if U think U can do better post ur own and stop criticizing.

Can you please explain the importance on tire age ?
Excellent advice, thanks for posting.
Is it the same for scooters?
Thanks for the great video!!!!
Great demonstration!!!!
awesome video thanks
GREAT GREAT GREAT.... I just replaced my BMW R1150RT tires with Michelins Pilot III and the difference was night and day.... The Meltzer's should have been replaced thousands of miles before, with cupping and circumferential ridge...
You don't mention anything about how old the tires are. They can have plenty of tread on them, but if they've sat in a garage for 3 years they can be hard and lack grip. Born on date!
@imhereforthevideos1 Unless you're a racer, it's normal for the tread in the center of the tire to wear before the tread on the sides.
Thanks for making such a useful and informative video! : )
Great job man! ;-)
You really helped me!
Tnx!

i agree. i had a continental tyres and they were damn sliperly. i changed them well before my due change as i felt so unsafe
Thanks man! I run a ride those goes 400 miles one way on my gsxr and it seems that its really wearing out my tired flat as in its squaring off is there a good tire thats out there that can be used for long rode trips as well as still take turns very sharply? Thanks!

Top shelf! Very nice job!
Thank you. Good vid simple to the point
sweet video learned so much thanks dude
Just put 2 of the Michelin pilot road 2 on my bike. I hope you're right.
i am taking notes, thnx im learning lots.
Phew. Old video. But still very relevant content!
How many people do wheelies on their tyres before changing them?
I doubt these were rode in that state
Damn I always wondered what those little bumps in the tread are for!
is cool tank you... saludos desde mexico(hello from mexico)
My rear tire looks like the one on top of the stack.
I think i shall replace it then. (it's more then 5 years old now and doesn't hold its pressure like it should) It's also tricky when wet. (aquaplaning)
Thanks for the info...now i know i need to buy some tires lol
Thanks for video.Very useful info!
Nice video J
@zero12590 replace it, if the middle of the tire is worn down and even almost gone..replace it even if the sides look okay
is it possible to fix a nail hole in a rear tire yourself? A friend just bought a new one, and has a nail in the center of it. He doesn't have the money to take it in to fix it.

I heard to watch for tire blueing representing the tire has been through to many heat cycles. Is this true?
so what those it mean when my front tire is experiencing small cracks between treads but the side wall is fine. and thread life is fine just little cupping too.

Very informative video! Thx
Thanks I needed to know this!
@imhereforthevideos1 Definitely replace it as soon as possible, if you've gone past the wear indicators.
you said "bump or indentation." For what it's worth: a "bump" is Concave. An Indentation is Convex. Therefore, the wear indicator is a "bump" and NOT an indentation. That said............nice video.
very nice program.
Excellent stuff. Thanks.
My motorcycle tyre (Bridgestone Battlax) is 4 years old. I dont ride often and the threads are in good condition. Is it safe to use the tyres or do I need to change?
You know Ron, you always rotate back to front when u notice front is wearing out, just like a car. Or is it front to back?
Liked it. Thanks!
Got a ?. I got a 2000 zx600r kawasaki i let my friend use it and he ended up hitting a curb. the front tire now has a slash on the outer edge but it didn't go all the way in and i can still ride it. now my ? is should i change my tire or keep it? there is no air coming out of it.
What causes one side of front tire to wear out before the other side?
I LOVE awkward Asian people. They are my favorite :)
Good tips, thanks bud.
Thanks! Very informative!
thanks..
i am looking tires for my 350cc RE...because i am tired off gravels (the small stones)...it causes big accidents...
so plz help me ...
Great video thanks imm off to get a set
Informative. Good use of RUclips. *Thumbs Up*
Good job man
Hey, I have a Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa rear tire and the last 15 mm from the edge of the tire have become slightly blue'ish
tire stil has 3-4 mm of thread on it
would you consider it still safe to use the tire for normal road riding if i'm going to use the full shoulder of my tire / ride on the blue area?
Great Vid man!
Cupping causes headshake. Also caused by bad tire alignment usually from poor chain maint.
When to change shock and muffler??? thanks

@nils001 I actually think 1 of my front springs is broken,on one side
hey bro..excellent stuff...i was wondering if you could tell us how to lower bikes height cuz uknow its hard for asians...wat we should man?
@kd4ysi Yeah i always find that odd. I understand Motorcycle tires are softer than car tires but still only 3 to 5k miles?thatd be like changing tires every two months
when do you rotate?
good stuff machang.

Ya I've heard this before from some random aswell. Chicken strips is definitely at the edges of your tire, it has nothing to do with the middle.
Thanks for the info
Can i put a low profile tire on rear end of honda shadow i dont prefere the dohnut look sorta like factory to skinny like cars
+blah LOOKS verses the BUMP coming (yes it will) made me CRY like a BITCH all the way to the store for regular rims AGAIN! Learn from others MISTAKES unlesss you dont care about MONEY:)

@csisac thanks for all the help
I just put a new set of michelin pilot sport's on my 900rr, what psi should i have front and rear, no track days just fast road riding. Anyone any idea's?
great video
I almost think it doesn't hurt to wash the tread with a mild soap?
i always change my tire at the beyond road safe hahaha usualy end in a burnout lol
well put together thx :)
