For an old (age, and years riding) motorcyclist this is great video describing how to tell when your tires need replacing due to wear. You could have thrown in age of tire and weather cracking as well. However your tires did not show this due to relative short tread life. Very easy to understand. Keep up the good work mate.
I think you could mention tire age. Some bikes don't get used a lot and can end up with relatively unworn tires north of 5 years old. At some point the rubber starts to dry up though and it makes sense to replace them. If you have the money I'd say when worn out or 4-5 years whatever comes first, adjust a little depending on sunlight exposure.
You are lucky you still have shops doing mounting and balancing so economically for you in your area. Not so here in Indy. I recently bought commander II's for my Harley from a reputable internet supplier. Got a good deal. Things have changed in the last couple years since I last replaced tires. Now, local shops are either refusing to do tires you bought somewhere else, or charging so much to do it (at least $40/tire, off the bike, around here) that you should have just bought from them. So, when the time comes to put them on, I am planning on buying the tools and doing it myself.
Great video, i ride motorcycles since 26 years ago, changed lots of set of tyres ... and never noticed those marks ! ... right now i was figuring out when to change my tyres ! Thanks man !
Wish the tire manufacturers would add a bit more tread in the center of the tire. So if the wear bars are set at 1/32", that means with a 8/64" depth of tread on some new tires, we are wearing 3/4 of the tread and then we are illegal. Lots of new tires only have 1/4" of tread depth. That duel compound seems to be a good idea, to me. Hope it works well.
Very helpful... Last fall I blew a rear tire at 50 mph exiting a curve. Pleased to say that all was fine coming to a stop but the wear sneaked up on me... I didn't think it looked that bad but.... I've played that chip, don't want to do it again.
By coincidence, I am removing my old Bridgestone Battlax's and replacing them with Michelin PR4s. Thanks for the video. You confirmed what I suspected. Another reason to replace your tyres by this point is that 90% of punctures occur during the last 10% of tyre wear.
Running Conti Trail Attack II (3rd set) on my 2014 BMW R1200GS (currently 66,000+ miles) and getting 20,000+ miles on both the front and rear. Yes, 20,000+. The OEM tire, Michelin Anakee III had over 13,000 at replacement and had about another 4,000 miles remaining.
Another indication of tires being shut is; when you look at the tire's sidewall you will see a 4 digit code in a rounded rectangle, that is the date of manufacturing as in 00/00 week of the year and year; 2517 = 25th week of 2017. Reason being because manufacturers advise against using tires that are more than 5 years old since the oils dry and the rubber becomes harder and less grippy.
Alright, lets let them wear down into the first third and see how it develops. It has a nice earthy feel to them and definitely has a spicy kick in excitement.
Cool I just ordered a set of the PR4'S that should be here tomorrow. Bike shop quoted $50/each for mounting if I didn't order from them. $25/each if I did order from them. The guy did tell me sport bike tires are ridiculously easy to mount. Since I've successfully changed tube type dirtbike tires I guess I'll give it a try and then just pay for balancing.
I've now had Pilot 4s on for some weeks now and I think they feel 'harder' on the roads. Possibly this could be due to the harder compound that gives the longer lifespan of the tyres? Just a thought. Well I'm not a newbie however I didn't turn off your video! Very entertaining as usual Bryan.
Good info for a new rider. I have still my original tires on my rear. 16,000 in BT021. But at 12,000 I change out my fronts. I want to replaced both at the same time. And your right I hardly use my back break. And I check my tires pressure every other day.
"This is not an endorsement for Craftsman tools or lights for that matter." Nice video. Good tips. Your explanation on the tire wear indicator was much better than a few videos of the same subject. After your video I completely understood and what to look for.
Good Info on tires Brian. I usually buy 1 front and 2 rears when I buy tires. Right now I have the Dunlop Q3's and I'm looking at greeting the PR4's for my bike. Mind you I ride a sport bike and live where we have lots of twisty roads. So millage and traction are important to me since I do ride a lot.
If you were canyon carving I would say change them but doing straight lines in Florida you could go another year. It's a shame Battlax or Michelin don't make a straight line tire for the Florida region.
Got 12K out of my stock OEM Harley Dunlops, only had to change due to getting a nail in the rear tire. Probably had another 3K left on them. Funny, OEM Dunlops on the HD were more squared off and flatter. The Dunlops that I changed to (American Elite) much rounder, more usable tread and better handling through the turns. Glad I made the change to these over the OEM's.
Yeah, right now there are a total of 3 brands of tires available for my 200/50 18’s. The cobra chrome is $400+ bucks, the shinko is $169, And i think the battleaxe was around $300…. Gebeez. Where are all the tires?
OMG. thanks a lot. I never knew how to use those wear indicators. this really helped. I always looked at the arrows on the side and wondered how are these supposed to show me wear. lol. this was awesome and much needed. :)
Bryan, I really have learned quite a lot from your "how to" vids. They are just priceless for those of us who are beginning to do the simple maintenance and repair work on their bikes. This video included. I hope you do a video removing the tires from your bike when you are ready to switch tires. I have the PR4 GT rear tire on my FJR due to a nail that blew out my stock tire at 6500 miles. The tire is great. Had them on my Ninja 1k as well. Suggestion to you.....when you are at that point when you need to check and or change your brake pads on your FJR please post that video as well! Thank you again for your entertaining and very informative style and presence.
thanks man i have done a vid already on wheel removal. i dont do my own changes. i dont go through the volume to make it worth it buying all the tools.
Tire changes I can take to the dealer, getting them off is another story! I will take a look at your past vlogs and take a look. I am a visual learner or I comprehend better when I learn visually. Again, that is where you vids are great for guys like me!
I have never had any tire last 6k miles. 3.5 to 4 k and they are toast. Dunlop Roadsmat2, Bridgestone battlax, metzeler m3 n m7rr, they all die prematurely
I've been running the Battleax t31's and I've been getting 10k miles. I'm no lightweight at close to 300 pounds, so I think that is pretty good. The stock tires are never the same as purchasing a new tire. Don't compare the tires that came on the bike with ones that were purchased.
My next tire change. I am thinking about changing the tire value to right angle. ( for easy of filling and checking tire pressure) I am wondering if you have any thoughts on this? Do these valves have a long service life?
My tracer 900 2017 still has the original dunlop 222s on and only done 2,900 miles but are now 4 years old so been told to think about changing them, I have been looking at the metzeler z8 which I can get for £150 a pair in the uk
All Ill say is the tread info is good but the lack of oversight on the overall condition of that tire like age is also important and why having dryrotted tire sidewalls or rubber thats shiney and hard is dangerous ... Whether the treads are good or not I replace my tires every 3years and I also check the date of manufacture on the label to ensure Im getting fresh rubber...
I'll be fitting these MPS4 on my zzr1200.But already fitted are MPS3 and have done 10k miles so far and will probably go 15k.By which time MPS5 will be out :).Bit different to the Bridgestones on GPZ900, only lasted 3-4k miles.
Well my opinion it all depends on the weight of the bike because there's more weight on the back tire versus the front tire and that is why the back tire wears out before the front tire enjoy your video it is very informative especially to a rookie Rider I don't consider myself a total newbie but I still consider myself a rookie

And I would make a race course around the parking spots, painted lines, and obstacles, then practice proper knee down, high lean angle turning. Especially if I have a stunt or race cage & protective clothing.
your lucky. I got 4000 miles on the same tires. Also just changing to pilot 4 GT,s on my triumph sprint GT. Have got to get more miles. Not cheap, But hopefully worth it.
I got 11,400 miles out of my pilot 4 GT’s and could have gone a little more but I live on the east coast of Florida and it rains everyday in the summer ! I ran these tires on my 05 Honda ST1300 and will put them on my 14 FJR as well. How many miles did you get on your FJR pilots ?
I have a ducati multistrada 1200 and i am torn between pr4 gt or metezler 7rr. I know the gt is for a heavy bike but pr4 are awesome. How have you enjoyed them. One of the best things about them are the fast turn in... Just a warning if you ride out of fl. Great choice thou
Great channel. Has inspired me to do as much work as I can on my 2016FJR1300es. So my question is, now that you gave 2 years on these tires (or maybe already been replaced), how did they work for you? Mileage? Grip?
The stock tires shown in the vid I replaced at 6,450 miles, they had tread left but felt like crap. I replaced them with PR4GT that lasted 9000. They had tread left also but I did a long freeway trip and it left a flat spot I didn't like the fel of so I put on another set of the same. I currently have 5000 on this set of PR4GT and they look about 1/2 done and still feel great.
Good stuff TwoWheelObsession (TWO, haha, nice). How about some advice on the reasons to change out tires; nicks and cuts, what's acceptable, what's not. Cracking due to age/UV damage, what's acceptable, what's not. Puncture repairs, once, twice? Please don't say thrice. Keep up the good work.
i have two bikes... GSXR and YBR125... very different bikes. GSXR has road pilot iii. Very competent bike! The YBR however, the other day I lost traction on the front whilst overtaking a lorry... nearly landing under it! I had bars at full lock to keep it up, yet it was still falling left towards the lorry... so I booted the ground and that recovered the bike (few!)... what i was wondering... because on these small bikes tires last for ages (in tread terms).. and ive had it on the bike since 2010!!! And believe it or not there is still more than enough treat..... but do you think maybe some other aspect of the tire may have degraded??
i think its the fact that the rubber compound is harder than the pilots which have relatively soft rubber. the soft rubber is far more sticky than the hard one therefore making the tire easy to lose traction especially in aggressive changes in direction or extreme lean angles

hey man I was wondering if you can help me out a bit I'm interested in buying my first bike it's an 2002 harley fxstc softail custom but I'm a bit suspicious of the seller he says the bike has only 5733 km which is only 3562 miles and it needs new tires and he also says he's got nearly 50k invested in the bike and only wants $13,000 for it? what's your thoughts
haha 85 I was born in 86 my uncle has a honda 250X and a 250R. the 250R has I think lonestar axles so it's a bit wider then stock I took it out for a rip a while back. thing halls ass but gets a little hairy in the corners I told him he's nuts rippin that thing but he's pretty good with it. I'd rather 2 wheels then 3 or 4 at least with 2 I can control it easier launching it in the air and if I make a mistake air born it's a little easier to correct the landing. cheers bud.
Sidewalk cracks can be caused by under inflation or from tires that are old and sat in the sun too long. If you run them, you risk a blowout and loss of control of your bike!
do you have advice for getting an FJR on the center stand by yourself? i dropped mine trying to put up the center stand... trying to install frame sliders outta all things...
I have done it several times. The rear always dies when the front is at half life, so u get some other rear tire instead. For street riding I faced no issues at all in summer or winter- north east
HI sir what do you think about tyre age, sir. I recently bought a VTR1000F with pilot road 3 tyres on it, i was told these tyres were over 3 years old! Are they aged and do they need replacing? your reply would be graciously welcome:/
I recently bought a 2005 Suzuki c50, it has the stock tires with 11k miles and an 04 date on the tires, no visible cracks, but I take it I should replace these?
is that normal to not have the tire warn to the edge on an FJR? i just bought one and i dont like the chicken strip... can you lean on them hard enough to get rid of it? lol
CAIDMASTEROFPYRO same lol I get it this week but it’s only a 250 and I heard it’s not the best for the rain. Kind of worried now about riding with them. How was it for you?
I have never worn the sides out living in Louisiana and moved to South Florida and never worn a side. I hear noobs laughing saying I don’t do curves 😂🤷🏼♂️
Not watched video, but just wanr2say,swapped over tyres on my Z1000SX,from well worn Metzeler’s (1000)squared off,for a pair of Dunlop’s,bike feels terrible!metzs wer road tecks ,duns wer sportsmax300.tyre pressure was bit wrong!10psi out!Hav,nt had time to alter pressure yet,but ride felt very hard(bouncy)but they are a sporty tyre. If you have this bike, get pr4,s.Or Metzeler road tech!DONT COMPREMISE!

Great info! It’s the one fact I was looking for. Thank you!!
Instead of a triangle, Michelin uses Michelin Men to point at wear bar locations.
So they do. Thanks for the tip. I hadn't noticed until you pointed that out.
Yup!
I got 13 000 miles on Michelin Pilot Road 3 on my Honda ST1300. Now I changed to Pilot Road 4 GT and it's feels even better!
Alexander, I recently got about 27,000ks out of my PR3s and I don't ride like a 'pussy'. I just ride smoothly.
Alright, lets let them wear down into the first third and see how it develops. It has a nice earthy feel to them and definitely has a spicy kick in excitement.

I once put a batlax for a fireblade 16 front on my RX, it was dead on the sides within 130miles, went back to metz

Your tire did a lot better than my stock Dunlops. I only got about 3,600 out of my rear tire before it was extremely bald.
Me to bro. on a 2005 fatboy.

i just ride mine until i see the belts in the tire. my current rear tire has streaks of mesh visible
I ride mine until I can see the air inside the tire.
I ride mine until I can see the spokes.
Bavarian Banshee I ride mine until I can see the center wheel hub.
I ride mine until I see the rim kicking up chunks of asphalt
I just ride without tires lolz
I ride my tires till I see secondary rubber usually.... And I had known some dudes that rode it to the metal... Lol
I have searched my tire and I can’t find a wear bar anywhere.. The shop says I need new tires but I still have tread, I’m not sure if I do or don’t..

The driving tires wear because of braking and accelerating not weight.
Curious how well the Michelin tires are holding up and handling? I was considering going with Metzler
If my tires started looking as uneven as those, I would go to good parking lots, and practice techniques, that happen to wear down the outer tread, like pothole dodging maneuvers.
Like the FJR, any recs on buying one...perhaps the 2018 ES model?
I got 11,400 miles out of my pilot 4 GT’s and could have gone a little more but I live on the east coast of Florida and it rains everyday in the summer ! I ran these tires on my 05 Honda ST1300 and will put them on my 14 FJR as well. How many miles did you get on your FJR pilots ?
Share your views on the subject although I tend to screw ever last mile out of my rubber before I change them. Those PR4 GT's should be mint
Normally you can get 2 backs to 1 front
What about life span?
Bike sitting in garage. Not moving much great profile but over 6 years old.
I once ferried a bike with 12 years old tires
When changing out tyres, do you recommend changing both at the same time? will it effect handling?
No it really doesn’t matter
I'm curios from the legal point to show the tires cord how many miles you can ride......

Should have mentioned date codes in some more detail.
Much better info than MC Garage. I would recommend using a pointer or pen to really specify what we're looking at. Thanks.
My front tire is 7 years old. It still has some thread left on it. However it shows some microscopic cracks on the sidewalls. Should I replace it?
Yep
Sidewalk cracks can be caused by under inflation or from tires that are old and sat in the sun too long. If you run them, you risk a blowout and loss of control of your bike!
Cigar obsession is that you. I had no idea you rode a motorcycle
I have te problem that when I make a slow curve that i am feeling the back sliding is that because my back tire is a little bit flat instead of round?
If I crudely took off the tire from the rims and marred them, will it compromise them?
Random Gorilla I got them mounted just fine, thanks!
dude u kinda look an sound like Seth Rogan lol
I'm older. He sounds like me lol
Very helpful, thank you for taking the time to make the video. 👍👍👍
Mi tire tred go faster outside then middle becouse i live near mountains and the roads are like the $ mark ;-)
They wear outside because your riding correctly
how many miles did you do on your original tires because i have the same and im around 7,500 miles on mines i have a kawasaki concours
do you have advice for getting an FJR on the center stand by yourself? i dropped mine trying to put up the center stand... trying to install frame sliders outta all things...
i already have a video on it
TwoWheelObsession
anything wrong with mixing and matching different brands for front/rear?
+Supernova12034 no but most people prefer it matched for consistent handling
I have done it several times. The rear always dies when the front is at half life, so u get some other rear tire instead. For street riding I faced no issues at all in summer or winter- north east
Thanks for the info! Really useful.
These road pilots are great tires.
If I remember correctly, did you have a Cigar channel on youtube?
ruclips.net/user/cigarobsession
TwoWheelObsession Awesome I like your cigar videos sir, thanks for the high quality content you upload on RUclips.
HI sir what do you think about tyre age, sir.
I recently bought a VTR1000F with pilot road 3 tyres on it, i was told these tyres were over 3 years old!
Are they aged and do they need replacing? your reply would be graciously welcome:/
5 years is the industry suggested limit
Excellent video and very educational!
Thanks for sharing.
Ride safe
What is that line going around your front tyre/tire (just off centre/center)? I have noticed it on mine and I don't know what causes it.
It's just from manufacturing
Thank you for all your awesome info on bikes and cigars. 😀
I recently bought a 2005 Suzuki c50, it has the stock tires with 11k miles and an 04 date on the tires, no visible cracks, but I take it I should replace these?
100% they were unsafe many years ago.
Are they loosing air , going flat weekly yes but then i have tires on my sand rail 40 years old still holding air that only drop a psi or two a month
is that normal to not have the tire warn to the edge on an FJR? i just bought one and i dont like the chicken strip... can you lean on them hard enough to get rid of it? lol
did you miss everything i said about FL?
TwoWheelObsession im watching a second time, i was just asking. i have an FJR and was just wondering
Newbie sending thanks!
oh my god, you have a motorcycle channel also? i watched your cigar videos and i knew you looked familiar. LOL
I just ride mine until blow out and I dont care to check condition thats i ride longer than any other rider
Do you also ride 'till you run out of gas?
my bike came stock with pirrelli diablo rosso corsa's
CAIDMASTEROFPYRO same lol I get it this week but it’s only a 250 and I heard it’s not the best for the rain. Kind of worried now about riding with them. How was it for you?

praveen saji yes of course
"legally required to change tires..." Anyone got Harvey Spectre's number?
I still don’t get it ?
Wait I've watched your cigar reviews!
Thank u so much man!!! 👍🏼❤️
No problem 👍
I have never worn the sides out living in Louisiana and moved to South Florida and never worn a side. I hear noobs laughing saying I don’t do curves 😂🤷🏼♂️
Thanks for the tips
It's a Barney is going to give you a ticket, if he catches ya mark. LoL
nice video, keep up the good work
A soft tire will not last as long. The harder the tire the longer it will last.
Holy shit i watch your cigar reviews never knew you ride...little late i guess 😂
This video was sponsored by craftsman right?
