    If a country band wants to make an impression in our house, doing a seven-minute cover of a Richard Thopson classic like "1952 Black Vincent" is a Hell of a good place to start.

      So unfortunate that David A ran out of gas and left the band. Saw Reckless with David about 10 years ago in Boston with Micky & the Motorcars. Both bands were fantastic. Saw Reckless without David a couple years ago... Willy still rules, but just not the same without David.

    Im a 50 year old dude. There are two songs in their world that ring true I’m my heart - Leonard Cohen’s “hallelujah” and Richard Thompson’s “52 Black Lightning.”
    If you’re going to cover either tune, you had better nail it. It is not easy to honor either song and make it unique without being tacky or cliche.
    These dudes just hammer it. Bring it home. Blend in a gospel feel to the song with the country.
    Holy crap bro, bring a tear to my eye. I’m not crying’, you’re crying,

    My grandpa had a Vincent Black Shadow. He died in 1964 when mom was 9, so I obviously didn’t know him. Grandma did sell the bike after a year or two. She needed the money to raise mom on her own. I was born in 1980. All I have is a few photographs and my grandmother’s memories that she shares with me throughout our conversations. I lost her in 2015. She’s with grandpa in heaven on the back of that Vincent.

    Fucking Hell!! I'm an Englishman and live 5 miles from where they made the legendary Vincent Black Shadow "The fastest production motorcycle in the world" ... so doubly possessive of tgis song and our proper music in general (not the pop shite ... the real stuff). I am always a bit reluctant to see/hear our better stuff getting covered by American bands .... just as I'm sure lots of Americans feel the same way when a British artist covers a well liked quintessentially American song. Theres been some covers that are as good as the original but many that were far worse.
    But this ... well this is ... and I feel traitorous saying it ... this is better than Richard Thompsons original to my ear. It could be that the original is decades old and musicians, instruments and sound technology has advanced so much but I dont think it is. I think it's because these guys feel it and I guess I shouldnt be surprised and should broaden my outlook. This is truly fucking awesome.
    I hope my neighbours like too cos they're going to hear it for a while.

      There's also bluegrass version on RUclips by the Del McCoury Band. He changes the lyric slightly in one place--Boxhill becomes Knoxville. I realize that Richard Thompson is RIchard Thompson, but versions like this have a bit more energy to them that I like. And, even though I know a lot of singer-songwriters, I often prefer bands to solo acts.

Whichever it was, Reckless Kelley was formed before they moved to Austin in October 1996. Or was it 1997? They have an unfortunate way of giving more than one answer to the same question.

    I have been encased by this song and RK's versions of it since the first time I heard it . Now a huge RK fan and Texas Red Dirt. Nn'duh- folks who don't know about Red Dirt, welp, they don't.

      Better, IMHO. This version has David Abeyta, Joe Miller, Jay Nazziola, Willy Braun, and my personal favorite, Cody Braun.

      @shadowrose8907 5 лет назад

      @Biomed Aggie Agreed; much more energy and life (despite the irony of the song ending in a death), and having multiple singers gives it a fuller, richer sound that a soloist just can't bring to bear.

    Grandpa had a Vincent Black Shadow after the war. He put a sidecar on it so as to transport my grandma and my mom whilst a child. He then died of lung cancer in 1964 while mom was 9 and grandma 33. Grandma didn't know shit about bikes after he died and sold it for cheap. Poor girl. When I first saw the pics as a teenager, and figured out what I was looking at, I cried.
