David can make Walter. His grimaces are good. I like Walter Matthau expression he is funny even if he says no word. There are few actors like that, Lui De Funes or Vlasta Burian. They are funny even if they dont speak and have charisma and energy.

    What a great concept!
Dave and a guest of the week going head to head discussing unfairly overlooked masterworks.
Dave H. and Vladimir P. discussing the delights of the complete works of Cesar Cui.
    A must hear.
You know? This could catch on.

Interesting, if not strictly pertinent fact to alleviate Draeseke's dullness: his grandfather Bernhard Draeseke was a pastor in Bremen who in 1831 accompanied notorious poisoner Gesche Gottfried to the scaffold. She had murdered 15 people and poisoned about 20 more.

wonderful accomplishment of your friend from Germany. My dad worked for Mercedes Stuttgart and MBNA. greetings. I didn't know Lehar did symphonic stuff, or fluff your word! I hope to go someday and visit the car headquarters someday! There's a Nikish story on laziness he looks through the fugue by Max Reger Nikish looks through the score and asks where is the fugue? Reger sneers there is none. Nikish Oh. true story.

It's the Haba for me. A quartertone opera must be a life-changing experience one way or another.

I never knew about Lehar's symphonic output. Makes sense, though since the Theater an der Wien had no faith in Lustige Witwe as it was considered too symphonic and highfalutin for operetta!
What a wonderful duo act, by the way.

A huge thank you to Mr. Meyer-Eller.
I have most of the Gielen box sets as well as the Rosbaud/Mahler set. He really did a fabulous job. Some of the best packaging I have seen. Beautifully done. I did check out the Hába; it sounds very demanding and must have been inspired by Schoenberg.
Incredibly, it was written in 1929.

    • @DavesClassicalGuide

There was more going on in 1929 in the musical avant-garde then just Schoenberg.

Whoa. As someone who's always on the lookout for a vast music-drama canvas as an alternative to the Ring (Cauldron of Annwyn anyone?), I never heard of Draeske's Christus. I must give it a listen, despite the warnings of Mssrs. Hurwitz and Meyer-Eller of its lugubrious properties. I never heard of Hippodamia either, but I can give that a pass since it's evidently hours and hours of Czech speech over music.

The strange thing is that doing a good job on box sets does not require you to solve differential equations or perform feats of strength. All it requires is for you to care. And so few care! Kudos to Soren for his caring and dedication and a job well done.

Hi. I'm new to your channel, new as in
started watching today and I was wondering
if you have done, or could do a sort of " starting a
classical cd collection for beginners" type of video
to help me get a gist of what I need in my collection; any budget cds ( with reasonably
good sound quality) would be nice, some bang for my
buck in other words. Thanks for reading.

I talk about works more than recordings, but you can then looks at the work surveys too once you have a sense of what you want to hear.
