Of course this has a cost, but let's not forget that Putler is a psychopath who, out of anger, can make the most terrible mistakes. Of course, we will then respond but the result would be terrible for everyone. So it's best to do as decided. We need to think about the post-war period, not just the present.

Before you can say "Putin is my God," they'll give you an all-expenses paid trip to a nearby mil.ru base for basic training - basically how not to shoot you or your comrade in the foot. Maybe you'll be issued a nice shiny Kalashnikov (or at least a rusty one) and a clean uniform. Oh, Nyet! Don't worry about the fresh bullet hole in your 'new' uniform. That was just because some other Russian didn't get the above "training," and shot his comrade by mistake. So be proud! You will wear the uniform of one who died for the Motherland... Wearing a deadmans recycled uniform is an honor because it saves resources. (And, meh, who cares if he died - your commanders sure don't.)

As a German, I cannot express how ashamed and infuriated I am at chancellor Scholz' decision. I'm not a political or military expert at all, but here are my two cents anyways:
There is certainly a strong russian influence on our people, especially politicians, but I do not think Scholz is "bought" by the Russians. Instead, his decision to cancel support for Ukraine is probably a political move to mitigate the exponential rise of AfD and BSW (one a neo-fascist, the other an authoritarian leftist party), which are openly pro-russian and fans of the russian dictator (no surprise there).
Another reason might be the absolute crazy obsession most Germans have with "savings". Almost no-one in this country recognises the difference between savings on an individual level versus savings on a macroeconomic level anymore. As soon as minister of finance Linder came up with budget restrictions, the support for Ukraine was history. We save money, no matter the cost.

I think people are getting a little bit upset about the fact that foreigners get more help than the local population. Pensioners in germany are collecting bottles from trashcans to survive, but ukranians get placed in hotels and get catering for 100€/day/person. They get free cash and go back to "visit" the country that they just fled from in above average fancy cars.

This war started in Moscow when an evil little man decided he wanted Ukraine. That's also where this war will end, when Putler decides the price is too high.
Ukraine doesn't have the manpower or ordinance to push Russian troops off their territory. Their only hope is strategy.
This move into Kursk was strategic to put pressure on the one person who has the power to end the war.
Buffer zones and prisoner exchanges are percs but Kiev has their eye on how to best get their territory back.

I am from Hungary, massively pro-Ukraine. The name Ben Hodges in a video title is instant CLICKBAIT :) . With some background in foreign service(s), I would regard highly the next US administration to request the General"s advices on Eastern Europe security issues, Instead of the hazardously incompetent (or worse) like Sullivan and co, whose directives are just ignorant and dangerous, in light of the outcomes (policies) they have generated ref. the war in Ukraine. Fear is never a good advisor. And they are driven by anxiety, by definition irrationale. This lead to inhumane decisions, terrible loss of life on Ukrainian side: unnecessarily. Biden followed erroneous paths, that lead to wrong, harmful decisions. Many. Far too many, Going against US interests, Global Security, as well as ethics, democratic and human values in general. Even against international law, like the restriction in long-range arms use (even those noit produced , not delivered by the US.). These are shameful acts. With blood on these policies, and the people who inititated and supported them. Trump is a nightmare of course, but this does not save the day.

    • @andrewlockett4569

One of the problems is that there are no bona fide Russian experts in the decision making centres in Virginia and Washington. It's clear they simply don't understand Putin, his motivations, and the Kremlin playbook whatsoever. Secondly the current Administration has singly failed to relay to the US public, and by extension western citizens as a whole the value adding, multi scale benefits of assisting Ukraine militarily. Too many people even here in Australia think it's all just charity with no payoff or return for allies at all. I've heard it many many times. Even the Republican party spout this lunacy. This is nuts. Putlers red lines have been crossed so many times without any significant retaliation that you could weave a new tartan cloth out of them. Ultimately only new eyes and a fresh set of forthright and bold leaders such as seen in Scandinavia and the Baltics will save the day and resign this western recalcitrant policy to the dustbin where it belongs. 🇺🇦

Our troops need to be in tunnels and underground bases - underground aircraft carriers for drones.
There are many projects (that could be used as examples) converting shipping containers into low-coast housing.
Containers could be fitted out, behind the line of contact, with bunks, kitchen and toilet facilities.
Then bulldoze out a hole, drop in configured shipping containers (w/ water proof coating -ref example projects) cover with dirt and within a day have underground operating base.
