Yep. You don't need $50,000 worth of gear to catch fish. Just a rod or two, a pack of senkos, a spare frog, a ziploc with some hooks and weights, and a good spot to fish.
Always great to see a man doing what he loves. He's probably caught more fish than all the commenters put together, and still gets a thrill everytime. Good health my man.
In one scene from the video he was looking straight away from the camera and reeling for a few seconds. I thought to myself that if I saw that guy from a distance, standing there fishing on an afternoon, never would it enter my mind that it was Roland Martin. Yet there he was, enjoying a Florida day, standing on the bank and hauling in the bass from a backwater just like a regular guy.
Love reading all the great comments of thanks for all the years of absolutely the best entertaining fish catching videos. All the respect Roland gets is deserved. Truly a legend fisherman, teacher, and entertainer. And Tyler , excellent job filming, editing!
More like 65 or 70 years of knowledge, but I agree with your main point. It's great to see him still having so much fun while passing his knowledge and tips on to us.
You know, I typically reserve comment and just enjoy content, admire life, be positive, work hard....you know, the typical True American Life. Some of these comments and even comments made about these are out of place. This man is a passionate fellow American regardless of fishing, who just so happens to get fish to bite, hook, and land them. Also knows a little bit about it since he has done it all of his life. Money, hell...he deserves a raise. We all have to work to make it....he chose to make a life and is sharing it. RESPECT, LOVE , UNITY
It's amazing that , after all this time and so many fish, he still gets so excited about a strike. I hope I never loose the enthusiasm either. God Bless you Roland.
Late to the party but can't tell you how much I learned from and enjoyed this video! Predominantly a bank fisherman my whole life (I'm 68) this was of particular interest to me and I look forward to more great videos as I go through your episodes like this one. You inspire confidence in a sport that had gotten so overloaded with gimmicks and commercialism that the simplistic approach was forgotten in favor of speed and technology. Bass don't have eyelids, sunglasses or hats is the kind of critical thinking I enjoy the most while laughing at the same time! KUDOS and thank you for a GREAT video!!
I'm sure people were catching bass in the olden times with lines woven of grass or thin strips of weed stem or bark, and hooks made of bone. I'd rather have the braid, fluoro, and mono we have now, with a nice, sharp, strong steel hook and a good rod and reel. But the (very) old timers proved it can be done without gimmicks and $$$$$$.
I'm 50 years old,and I remember watch shows like yours, Jimmy Houston, Hank Parker, and of course Uncle Bill Dance every Saturday with my grandparents. This really brought back some great memories. Thank you for all you do !!!
Watching this video brings back the memories of watching one of your videos 30 years ago of when you were wading and casting a gold colored Johnson Spoon with an Uncle Josh pork rind trailer.... Sorry that I am showing our ages with this comment Roland! Lol.... I also remember attending the last day weigh in of the Bassmaster Top 100 on the Connecticut River when you ran north to just below the Enfield Dam and kicked their tails matching the hatch with the combination living rubber/hair jig and twin tail trailer( if I'm not mistaken the trailer was a Yamamoto). I've caught plenty of smallmouth on the river over the years using that exact pattern! You really have to downsize the jig now with all of the fishing pressure. You were a huge inspiration to me back then when I was in my 20's. (The Yamamoto twin tail became my go to jig trailer from that point on)
they don't make the uncle josh anymore? that is kind of sad. i remember using them when i was a kid. i wanted to ask also if Roland or any of you guys tie directly to the hook with the braid or do you use some flouro as a leader?
I grew up in Windsor Locks just down river from the Enfield damn. I fished there all the time as a kid. I use to ride my bike on the bike canal trail that goes from WL to the Suffield side. Fond memories.
@@sofloangler7990 I can remember being up there in that clear water back in the 90s and be amazed by the schools(6-10 fish) of 2 - 3+lb Smallmouth you could see roaming the flats. Thank you Roland for the opportunity to understand bank fishing and key strategies! And equipment! I have followed you inn my teens now I’m 51 and it solitfies the knowledge I would ask when I was young and now RUclips allows you to really shed light on information
Roland was always my idol as a youngster. I remember getting up early on Saturdays to watch his show when I was in elementary school. Hell, I’m almost 40 now. Still my favorite and I’m glad to see he is still producing content and slaying hogs! Keep it up Roland!
Awesome Roland! It is such a pleasure anytime I have a chance to see you in action! I can't even adequately express how grateful I am to be able to learn from you! 2 Poles and a couple baits in your pockets and you just absolutely crush it from the bank; I am in awe!
He said "caught some of my biggest bass on topwater." As if he hasnt caught massive bass on worms, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, jigs, and probably bare hooks. What a legend...
Everything else has gotten me respectable decent sized fish and in enough numbers to win tournaments if I were to compete.... but every single one of my largest trophy fish were caught with topwaters.
You can't help but watch the entire video with such a jolly guy... I spent all my life working my butt off and now I'm retired and I'm starting to fish again something I haven't done in many years and I realize especially pond fishing you can fish your tail off and never catch a damn thing but this guy will get you catching fish every time you go out
@@SuperJSi Well, when you think about it, a hook looks like a small, skinny worm without much action to it. I bet somebody somewhere has sprayed attractor scent on a bare hook and caught something, most likely while drunk. They say there's nothing new under the sun. 🙂
I'm sick about it but they drained that area where I did the film. Tomorrow I'm looking for new water! It's a never ending challenge keeping up with the good fishing in the Everglades!
Roland Martin could be the most big headed professional bass fisherman out there and if it were anyone else, they would be but yet he's got the most humble attitude. I respect the crap out of him. A guy like that will reach a lot of new anglers and start them off having respect for one another.
Hey there Mr. Roland Martin, glad to see you get back in the fishing scene. I grew up watching you on tv. How about you and Bill Dance or another iconic fisherman do a show together? I think that would be awesome.
When I was a kid I remember watching Roland Martin and that was 40 years ago! Wow nice to see hes still around and now he's 79! Keep it going Roland and your valuable tips!
You find a lot of fishing videos that are all about hormonal, high-strung, fast talking, "hosts" - with grindercrunch music assaulting your ears throughout. Others are boring, "do this don't do that," and flat annoying with all their technicalities Then there's pros like you. Thanks, Roland. You still got ir, sir.
Love Roland’s land fishing optimism and he explains what he uses. Not everyone does that. Well done. I want to get My unused rod and lures out for once. Well done. Oh sun!
The quick part where he told us to squeeze the water out of the frog was a tip you don't get just anywhere, and if you would it would probably sound scripted, or be spoken at 1000 miles an hour like the Gen Z video maker had one too many Monster energy drinks. When Roland said it, it sounded unrehearsed, like it just popped into his head, like advice from a fishing buddy, dad, or grandpa would sound. Great vid from an old-school master who's still doing it.
Used to love waking up Saturday morning to Roland Martin and Bill Dance fishing then sneaking into the old farm ponds in Arkansas and catching hawgs 😎🐟🐡
I was surprised at how vigorously he sets the hook. He even said that he set it a "couple times" on that one fish. Learn from the master. Set the hook like you mean it!
5:28 once i saw this i knew it was gunna be great video lmao roland is so legendary, i remember waking up and watching him and bill dance just slaughter tanks all day
Roland Martin, Jimmy Houston, Hank Parker, and Bill Dance are true LEGENDS of bass fishing imo. They caught big bass without all the technology that all the bass fishers have these days. They’d have huge final weigh in bags of fish at every tournament just by using Brain power! They’d catch big bass everywhere they went! Knowing where to fish, what color to use on any day of the year, and how to fish plain and simple!!!! Love watching these videos
Mr. Martin, it was a tremendous honor to meet you at Sunoco a couple weeks ago. The only thing I wish was different was if my Grandpa was still around. We used to watch your stuff on VHS when I was a kid, so meeting you on the way to the Honey Hole (I’ll never tell). I caught my PB of 10.87lbs that morning on a Custom Whopper Plopper from the little tackle shop. Thank You for being a regular Florida Boy, you didn’t have to stop pumping gas to take a picture with me, but you DID. That may have been the Single Greatest Fishing Day without my Grandpa of my life ! Thank You , nobody ever would’ve believed me 😂
This guy is awesome lol. I’m trying to get into fishing and I don’t know much about it at all. But he’s really giving the good info and pulling in them fish. Wish I knew where this spot is so I could hit it.
Before you posted this message, Roland posted upthread that they had drained this spot of water since he made the video, so it may or may not be fishable today. Either way, there are plenty of spots like it.

Yep. You don't need $50,000 worth of gear to catch fish. Just a rod or two, a pack of senkos, a spare frog, a ziploc with some hooks and weights, and a good spot to fish.
Been watching your videos since early 90s.and your still one of my favorite professional fisherman /videographers
Wow , Great to see you back Roland, growing up watching you made me a better fisherman and I'm passing that on to my son's
Thanks for remembering the fishermen that don't have a boat to fish in means a lot to us to be recognized keep up the good work 😊
Thanks Roland! I'm a Corrections Officer and I needed something positive to do so, I took up fishing! Your video was easy to follow and I enjoyed.
It's so awesome to see how excited he gets after all these years!! Like a little kid with 40 years of knowledge
Grew up watching Roland catch fish ...he’s still got it..!!!
It's amazing that , after all this time and so many fish, he still gets so excited about a strike. I hope I never loose the enthusiasm either. God Bless you Roland.
"There's a strike. That's a strike." Then he lets them have it for a couple seconds to get the hook in their mouth, and WHAM!.
Watching this legend and others never gets old. Employing what Roland teaches brings results without fail. Just tremendous!
OMG!! From my younger days (I’m 50) until today, Roland Martin is a fishing GOD! I love him!! The man was 79 when he filmed this!!!
(The Yamamoto twin tail became my go to jig trailer from that point on)
I remember roland busting out a senko in the 90s and going whats this sorcery, good times
just lost my last Uncle Josh pork frog this year (2018) :-( end of an era
they don't make the uncle josh anymore? that is kind of sad. i remember using them when i was a kid. i wanted to ask also if Roland or any of you guys tie directly to the hook with the braid or do you use some flouro as a leader?
I grew up in Windsor Locks just down river from the Enfield damn. I fished there all the time as a kid. I use to ride my bike on the bike canal trail that goes from WL to the Suffield side. Fond memories.
@@sofloangler7990 I can remember being up there in that clear water back in the 90s and be amazed by the schools(6-10 fish) of 2 - 3+lb Smallmouth you could see roaming the flats. I haven't been up there in years so I don't know how it is nowadays. I dinged many a prop trying to get my boat up there.
Roland so glad you’re back and getting stronger! I’ve followed you for years and it’s nice to see you back at it and enjoying what we all love! Fish on!
The master...I'd love to fish in the same boat with Roland and Bill Dance..So much knowledge.
Oooh sonnnnn !!!!
my31and37 BILL!!!!!
Roland just sold a pile of markers, love him
.
imagine all the bloopers between the two lol
This is awesome to see a pro fish from the bank and still kick ass like that... A true master at work here... Feels good to see roland martin still at it.
Thanks, I still have the passion!
Love this guy, grew up watching him on tv and in bass tournaments. A true fishing icon.
i was totally not expecting the trance music to come on. 100/10
Hey Roland, glad to have you on you tube. Watched you for many years and happy to see and continue learning from a Pro like yourself. Thanks.
still my fav fisherman. use to hit altoona and carters lakes up too. glad see you still killing it.
100% hook-up ratio on a hollow body frog. This is why Roland Martin is a legend!
100% in the video, maybe not in the parts that were edited out, if any. Nothing against Roland, I'm just sayin.
Awesome Roland! It is such a pleasure anytime I have a chance to see you in action! I can't even adequately express how grateful I am to be able to learn from you! 2 Poles and a couple baits in your pockets and you just absolutely crush it from the bank; I am in awe!
Thanks everyone for watching! This bank fishing is going crazy, I'll do more!
He said "caught some of my biggest bass on topwater." As if he hasnt caught massive bass on worms, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, jigs, and probably bare hooks. What a legend...
Ryan Bryant lol..”probably bare hooks”.... lol
Awesome job Roland,I absolutely Love love watching you and I've been watching you since around 1978 when I was 8 years old 😂🤣
Bill Dance, Roland Martin and Jimmy Huston ALL helped me catch my biggest bass. Thank you, Roland.
"Use the other end saves you money"
*Gary Yamamoto wants to know your location*
Thank u for make me laugh.. :D
A true fishing pioneer. Still loves what he does. Nothing fancy, just effective.
I'm sick about it but they drained that area where I did the film. Tomorrow I'm looking for new water! It's a never ending challenge keeping up with the good fishing in the Everglades!
@@RolandMartinOutdoors I hope they drain those areas slowly when they do that so the fish have time to move to different water when possible.
Come out with your fins up!!!!! Imma use that every time I go fishing now
Me too!!! Lol
That was hilarious but he should have said the rigs up now lol
Lol it was funny
No he should have said, " the *jig's* up" 😂
Roland Martin could be the most big headed professional bass fisherman out there and if it were anyone else, they would be but yet he's got the most humble attitude. I respect the crap out of him. A guy like that will reach a lot of new anglers and start them off having respect for one another.
I have watched Roland since I was a little boy. I am 46 and have always out fished my friends using just a plastic worm. Thanks Roland!
Hey there Mr. Roland Martin, glad to see you get back in the fishing scene. I grew up watching you on tv. How about you and Bill Dance or another iconic fisherman do a show together? I think that would be awesome.
Roland & Jimmy Houston would be epic
Keep going walk your ass off .....you dont know nothing....don't tell me how fush you are nothing I cant do
Come out with your fins up. Lol. I like that Roland. I can see your having fun son. That’s what it’s all about Nice Video Roland👍🎣
Yeah Roland pocket style tackle is the real deal !
I loved to watch the old school guys still today. Man I miss seeing you on tv
When I was a kid I remember watching Roland Martin and that was 40 years ago! Wow nice to see hes still around and now he's 79! Keep it going Roland and your valuable tips!
"Bites off the end of the worm, spits it out" Roland you a savage!! Lmao
My favorite fishing channel along with Ty PigPatrol.....best two on RUclips.
You find a lot of fishing videos that are all about hormonal, high-strung, fast talking, "hosts" - with grindercrunch music assaulting your ears throughout.
Others are boring, "do this don't do that," and flat annoying with all their technicalities
Then there's pros like you.
Thanks, Roland.
You still got ir, sir.
I'll try not to do that!
This is exactly the type of video I've been searching for. Thank you so much.
Always fun watching the master at work!
I've been a fan for a long time and always tried what i learned. Havent let me down yet. Tight lines
I have been watching Roland since I was a little kid on Saturday afternoons!!!!!
Thanks for showing this vid , not all of us can afford a boat to go fishing, its nice to see fishing from shore.
This guy setting the hook hard af. So far my favorite. Power.
Every time this guy sets the hook I swear it's a 10 lb Bass 😂
I feel like I need to step up my game...
I was surprised at how vigorously he sets the hook. He even said that he set it a "couple times" on that one fish. Learn from the master. Set the hook like you mean it!
When he started taking stuff outta his pockets it felt so real..cuz that how I usually go fishing 😭 I don’t usually take a bag when I’m pond hopping!!
Small backpack is where it's at my friend
5:28 once i saw this i knew it was gunna be great video lmao roland is so legendary, i remember waking up and watching him and bill dance just slaughter tanks all day
jared p haha yea those were the days
Thank You , nobody ever would’ve believed me 😂
I remember when he started fishing I use to watch him every saturday
This guy is awesome lol. I’m trying to get into fishing and I don’t know much about it at all. But he’s really giving the good info and pulling in them fish. Wish I knew where this spot is so I could hit it.
Download fishbrian, cool app and friendly community willing to help you land your first fish. whatever the species you're after.
Before you posted this message, Roland posted upthread that they had drained this spot of water since he made the video, so it may or may not be fishable today. Either way, there are plenty of spots like it.
As many fish as he's caught in his lifetime he's still having fun.
How is this even possible....I've stumbled into a time warp where the fabled legendary mythological Fisher King of my long-lost youth brings it all back to basics in the humblest way....amazing
I learned more about fishing in the first two minutes of this video that anyone has ever taught me. Thank you sir.
Yeah. That all you need to have an epic afternoon of fishing is what's in your pockets. !!!!???!!!! Awesome.
