Nice review. I like your ‘real world’ examples... I waited for the low-light performance review but it came at the end, so happy.
Thanks for watching!
Who else here loves aperture control on the lens? That what I miss most on my Sony lenses and my Sigma lenses. Great review, Arthur!
The best part of my older MF lenes
I actually love it.
Same here
aperture ring is not as useful in videography right? I do mostly video & haven't used it at all 😐
Then again I shoot a lot of vintage lenses
Chromatic abberation is present as well as softness but for the price, it is great
Ordered mine on your B&H link the second I heard $249. Can’t wait for its arrival. This thing is a beast.
For an F/0.95 lens the sharpness wide open is outstanding! I ordered one today on AliExpress for only $209!
How much after import taxes?
@@caleidoo still $209, didn't have to pay any taxes.
Wow, finally a Tony 0.95 lens. I'm impressed 7Artisans.
"Toneh"
lol at this distinguished gentlemen, such a refined taste in toneh, lovely
@@kingsamvisuals Toneh, the mysterious background quality of a bright lens, like this Tony 0.95. We can all be friends here.
It's APS-C, so using crop conversion it's actually a 53mm f1.4.
@@smaakjeks almost right, but not quite. The depth of field and focal length is equivalent to full frame 53mm f1.4. But it still lets in light as a f0.95 lens.
Damn impressed at how far 7 Artisans have come. Have a Manual Fisheye lens from them found was very good as well, and has nice Close focus and Bokeh for "Macro" close up shots.
Amazing sharpness and Clarity in your Samples. Great work and review man keep it up.
They probably just brand lenses produced by others
@@kingsamvisuals Can't really fault them or discount them. It's a whole industry in China (cities like Shenzhen are built to do white-label.)
This lens appears to have the exact same optical formula as the Mikaton 35mm f/0.95 II, and the Risepray 35mm f/0.95.
The Mikaton ver. II was a refinement of the original design, then Risepray swapped out the heavy brass mount and thicker housing from the Mikaton for their own Leica-inspired housing, and now 7artisans have their own version in their housing.
The 3 lenses are effectively identical, with variations in optical performance likely being down to individual oens coatings, and sample variation.
The 7artisans model has a flipped focusing ring on the XF mount version to match Fuji lenses and is lighter than the Mikaton. I have the Mikaton ver. II and it is a stunning lens. That 7artisans have managed to effectively package the same lens together in a smaller, lighter housing, for $250 is great.
In 20 years, some of these Chinese lens manufacturers could be a force to be reckoned with.
20 years? Check out Viltrox. China has arrived.
Saw this on eBay. Ran over to your channel to see if you had reviewed it yet and at that time you hadn’t. Glad to see ya got your hands on one!! The white and red has that classic look!
Dear Arthur... I think you should put (for apsc) or (apsc or full frame) fot your future lens review 🙇♀️
Agreed.
@spc3mky the focal length is not in the title :/
So is this lens for apsc or full frame ?
@@ReedJacobsit is for APS-C only
Careful. The T-stop of this lens is around t 1.4 (according to numerous reviews), it has only real f stop of 0.95 (geometrically). So no benifit in using it in low light comparing to any 35 mm f1.4 (apsc) lens (and there are tons of them). Turns out, not really a killer of Mitakon as I initially thought.
thanks you!
It's a great lens and it's cheap, dont be a prude
Been a fan for a long time and finally bought something from your links (this lens). Love how you break things down and help out fellow photographers, thanks for your time and content! Look forward to more and more reviews. About to switch from a 6000 to 6400, if you get a link to a silver body I’ll be happy to buy from it!
I picked up a used Mitakon 35mm f0.95 and absolutely love it. The only issue I've found is that if I try shooting at f0.95 in daylight, my a6400's max shutter speed of 1/4000 isn't enough to get the exposure right. A simple ND filter took care of that though.
No 8000 electronic shutter on the Sony? With the same Mitakon on my Fuji I can shoot in sunny conditions.
@@REMY.C. Yeah, even in silent mode it tops out at 1/4000. It's kinda weird since my older RX10iii can shoot at 1/12,500
@@AquaticBaboon then ND filter it is :-D
Impressive performance! And yes an amazing low price point considering the mechanics also seem to be so good!
Could you perhaps do some night shots? Like proper dark city street photography or even astro? Seems this lens is a dream for people who like night photography
" Once you get it in focus" - a very qualification.
If using on a rangefinder, not so much of a problem.
Have some concerns as to focussing quickly on impatient adults and children who are used to very fast mobile phone focussing.
You had very cooperative subjects!
If you like night photography, your dream is a tripod and a cable realise. With those two I have no problem shooting 100 ISO film at night, you just need to be patient enough
price really defines its usefulness, the mitakon or lowa is better but cost a lot more
If you crop out the vignetting in a Sony a7s . . . Your should be able to see in the dark!
I wonder what equivalent FOV you are left with?
Or
You could use it in APS-C mode.
I believe there are some video modes that crop into the frame?
yes, when using ACTIVE IBIS or 4K120 in A7S3 there is a slight crop, which should make the already not so bad vignette a bit better so don't have to crop as much in post. A7III also crops in a little when recording 4k30
A7s is full frame. Just get a full frame 50mm f1.4 to recreate what this lens can do on APS-C, without a vignette.
@@smaakjeks facepalm, thx, got excited about 0.95 & forgot about aperture conversion
I also have the sigma 30mm. The autofocus and low light work well for me. Thank you for the review
I was waiting anxiously for this review! I have the 35mm 1.2 and I always use it wide open for stills, and I really don't mind that it's not sharp. Do you think that getting the 0.95 will bring me some benefits? Thank you so much for the videos.
i also have it and like it a lot! however i don't usually use it at 1.2 as i find in pretty bad this wide open. Much better at f/2 imo
The 1.2 has a very nice rendering. Wide open there is a glow and the bokeh looks vintage. I love it. But I'm interested in this 0.95 too. But if it is "just sharp" and "just creamy bokeh", I might not really like it because that's like many other lenses out there. I wish there was a comparison of both lenses somewhere, but can't find any.
Update: bought it on Amazon, just did a quick test vs 35 1.2
Pros:
+ slightly sharper wide open.
+ less vignetting
+ Smoother bokeh
Cons:
- no vintage glow like the 1.2
- bokeh is just soft, not special like 1.2
- extremely heavy compared to 1.2
- no significant better light gathering
- no shorter shutter speeds
- infinity focus is not a hard stop
- double the price of the 1.2
Tested T stop light gathering by aiming both lenses on tripod to the same grey wall. 1.2 give 1/1250s and 0.95 showed 1/1400s. That's almost no difference.
So obviously, sending it back.
@@caleidoo Wow, thanks for the update! Not gonna buy it then 👍
Thanks for this video, I am new to the photography world. So I’m trying to figure what lens to use.
I would use lens with automatic focusing at start, I still have only AF lenses but that's probably due to heavy videography
Hi, I’m just starting my photo journey and went all in with a Sony a6400 and Tamaron 17-70mm f2.8 lens. The focal range takes care of several primes and the picture quality is outstanding. It’s fast at 2.8 so you can capture birds in flight. Great for street photography and portrait work. The bokeh at f2.8 70mm is creamy without being too busy. Now I am looking to get the Sony 70-350 f4.5-5.6 and a wide angle low light lens and I’ll be done for quite a while. Good luck! Let me know what lens you ended up going with.
@@philipgardiner2003 ha I ended up getting the Tamron 17-70mm and I love this lens!!!! Thank you for the the advice, I’m hoping to get a longer focal length. But need to save some $$$ :-D
I've tried this lens. Real T-stop is T/1.3-T/1.4, so this is similar to good F/1.2 lens.
Hehe I just thought, that's a tiny 0.95 lens, when I compare it to my lenses, but then I realized it's a crop cam lens! Geez, didn't know how small those lenses are
I’m at a very pivotal stage where I’m picking up a Sony 6400 along with a Sigma 1.4mm. This is primarily for video purposes, perfect for my video podcast series! 🤗
Now that I see this new lens, maybe I shall plan to get this one somewhere down the line 😊
Welcome. I have the A6400 and absolutely love it.
sigma 16 ? or 30 ?
@@TheBornBoy Sorry, typo. Sigma 16mm 1.4f
Sigma 1.4 apsc e-mount lenses are fantastic, beautiful bokeh & AF works great
@@mirrorlessny So true! I still haven't fully started using it in my video podcast series yet because we have a backlog of content that is going up there but if you take a look at the video that will be released today(Episode #14) and look at my intro - that was shot using the Sigma 1.4. Just incredible :)
They just arrived in the UK this week and mine arrived today.
The box contains a lens, wrapped in plastic, but NO faux leather case . . . Or even a draw string bag!
So I’m guessing that the fancy case was just for the promo samples.
The lens itself is exactly as you described and I’m very pleased.
I’m in Florida and I didn’t get the pleather pouch either.😕
Looks good. I was thinking about getting the Mitakon 35mm f0.95 but this is probably cheaper. The Mitakon seems to be quite sharp at 0.95 though.
I have the Mitakon. While both lenses seem to have similar designs and number of glass, it seems both are not really the same. When you check out samples of this lens, the highlight bokeh balls (especially if there's foliage in the background) seems to be exhibiting bright outlines. I have not seen it on the Mitakon. It seems even if this 7Artisans has more rounded aperture blades, the Mitakon seems smoother. Also, there's no lens breathing on the Mitakon. This is very cheap though! I hope my friend buys one so I can have a better comparison between the two.
@@enshongmiranda It is two dif optical schemes
@@enshongmiranda I have the Mitakon too, was a bit disappointed by the quality. I have wabbling in the barrel therefore the focus shifts. The non clicky aperture ring is also a big issue for me. I like to set my focus and aperture when I shoot in street so I just have to point and shoot and the ring is not reliable. Any slight touch with my clothes or anything else and the set aperture is lost. Not convenient.
@@REMY.C. This doesn't have a clicked aperture ring also. Too bad that it didn't work for you but in my case, it hasn't been a problem. I usually shoot weddings, portraits, and street and I'm on Fujifilm so I guess it all comes down to the shooting and handling style. I have a habit of putting my fingers closer to the mount so I don't really hit the Mitakon's aperture ring which is in the front. When I still had my Fujinon primes, the clicky aperture rings were not really that solid also (1.4/1.2 primes) so I actually had more accidental aperture changes there (especially the 16 1.4).
But in any case, I hope my friend buys this lens so I can have the opportunity to compare it to my Mitakon.
Solid effort by 7artisans but Mitikon’s 35mm f0.95 Mark ii lens has it beat in almost all my testing categories. The build, better contrast, much better roll off, quality of bokeh & shallow depth. Focus breathing on the mitikon seems less pronounced. Credit where it’s due. Good job mitikon. 7artisans not bad either! Competition is great for us consumers :)
Vishal Trivedi Mitikon was a hell of a lens, regret selling that one. Got this 7artisans one and you’re right, something doesn’t look the same. Couldn’t put my finger on it.
Same lens actually .....
Is there a comparison? Are they both for full frame or APSC?
Wow, I thought f1.2 was nuts, shooting it wide open is wild!
Wb portrait photography?
Very nice, thank you, Arthur. Can you do one using APSC lenses on a full frame camera? I am thinking about buying A7C and would like to know whether my A6600 lenses can be used on this camera.
Yes there is a Super 35mm/APS-C mode on the A7C
Use, yes, but cropped. There's no point of using full frame with APSC lenses.
@@trym2121 I agree, usually those who get full frame sensor cameras like to use the whole sensor, but must admit it is good to have this ability, can carry a compact apsc lens as a spare so in case FF lens breaks at least there's a lens to finish the job
Great video. So great that I got the lens based on your review. I don't have anything to add as the video was spot on about the lens. Thank you for sharing this informative video.
Love your videos bro
The optical formula is looking to be the same as the Mitakon 35mm f0.95. I have one and I would easily recommend it. I believe that I might be experiencing less CA. 7 artisans being a bit smaller, lighter and cheaper is a no brainer.
The Mitakon is so heavy.
When I switch to one of my Fuji lenses I have to check twice if I really put the lens on cause the weight difference is sooooo disturbing :-D
@@REMY.C. Just workout more and it is okey :D
This is also a rebranded Risespray that you can get for even cheaper. I'm pretty sure 7Artisan and Risespray are the same company? Chinese rebrands are really hard to follow sometimes. Also Yaxall makes the same lens? Maybe Pergear? Brightin Star?
4:14 My eyes had hard time focusing on the sharp wood fence. I guess I need eye glasses now.
Seems like a very nice lens with nice photos and nice aperture
...But could you get something like this for a Nikon APSC DSLR, and about as cheaply?
Nice review! Would you recommend this lens in crop mode for a full frame camera over the Meike 50mm F1.2? The 7artisans would be about a 50mm F1.4 equivalent?
Mitakon has 0.95 it you want
@@trym2121 unfortunately much more expensive. What makes this 7artisans lens interesting is its price with a good image
I just have to say, LOVE the LS430 and Ultra luxury too!
I have recently bought a 7artisans 35mm f0.95 lens for my sony a6400, the len i got is Fx mount and my cam is E mount.
Please suggest me what can i do
I wish I could see some photos using on full frame camera but thanks anyway!
How does this compare to the Mitacon speedmaster 35mm F0.95 II?, because it seems the exacta same lens, juts diferent branded
neat lens! I have a sony a7ii. do you have any recommendations for something similar for full frame or do you think this is sufficient enough?
Go for 7artisans 35mm 1.4 Full Frame Lens..if you can deal with vignette then you can have the Apsc version 0.95
Mitakon makes 0.95 lenses
That is nuts!
I bought a6400 last week with 16-50 kit lens. I am thinking to buy a new lens for cinematic videos and photos both. I can only buy 1 lens . Which should i buy.
I have exactly the same set-up. And the same question... I'm only interesting in video. I'm hesitating between the 18-105 f/4 g lens, and the 35 mm f1.8. Any recommendations?
1 lens for cinematic videos? Sigma16f1.4, just keep in mind that you won't have OSS any more. @SPIROS I had both/ made video reviews too, there is nothing to hesitate there, these two lenses have very different purposes, figure out what you are trying to achieve
Reviews show this lens is not f0.95. Background blur at f0.95 is practically the same as at f1.4. Its not one stop difference but something like a third of a stop. There is some cleverness going on. Vintage optical design with a speedbooster in its rear to achieve "larger aperture".
Full frame E mount for sony ? Can i find ? Ok, I'm gonna search
Thanks
Any chance you can measure the actual light throughput?

I have the sigma 30mm. This is nice but would only be a redundant lens for me. Your son is growing fast! Great review.
Why redundant?
@@SocietateaAscendenta 30mm 1.4 vs 35mm .94. Pretty much the same. Sigma lenses are superior.
Very NICE review! But a little more variety of adjectives would be NICE... otherwise everything seems NICE and mediocre,

Actually It's a f1.2 !
Sony A7s iii and this lens for low light✨✨✨✨
wow I just realized that using ACTIVE IBIS or 4k120 on A7S3 will give a slight crop which will reduce the current "not so bad" vignetting 😏 very interesting

Can this lens be used on Full Frame cameras?
Amazon says it can but will it have to be put on some sort of crop sensor mode?

Thanks for this. I could move over to these guys. Currently have their 60mm macro and it's a beauty. Really solid and great optics.
So do these third party lenses fit only sony mount type cameras? Do they fit M4/3? Are they meant for full frame or crop sensor?
Meant for crop sensor and for the Sony e mount. So can be used by Sony a7 full frames, but are meant for 6x00
