There is a scene where Tony is talking with Bobby in the boat, and Bobby says that if someone gets shot, they don't even notice their death, everything just goes dark. Supposedly, this is the key to the final episode.
not 100%. Chase says he doesn't. The point is the series didn't start at the beginning of Tony's life, in the same way, the series doesn't end that way. The point is Tony will have to look over his shoulder for the rest of his life.
@@orangewarm1 That's a theory, just the same as Tony getting whacked is. There is no definitive answer other than what the audience chooses to believe..
I started watching these guys watch the sapranos 1 year ago. As someone who’s grandfather got here 1909 from Italy. Definitely a very special viewing experience these last 1 year
"You dont even hear it when it happens" fade to black... With all the Godfather references in the series, Tony always said his favorite part is when Michael gets the gun from toilet and comes back to the table to kill. In the final scene here, you see the same thing happen with the guy in the members only jacket leave the table and walk into the bathroom, suggesting that he'll come out with a gun and take care of Tony. Thats just one of 100 different thoughts about the ending. Almost a choose your own adventure ending. Great way to end one of the best shows ever to be made.
@@ravigahllaThat GF 2. It’s during the scene after AJ gets arrested after trying to take out JR in the looney house and Tony picks him up. AJ accuses Tony of being a hypocrite and that he sits there with a bowl of ice cream saying that the scene when Michael gets revenge on the men who attempted to kill his father is his favorite scene of all time.
Because it sucks. The series overall was so good, and then the end just falls flat like a wet turd. David Chase couldn't decide how to end it, so he took the coward's way out and just cut to black with no ending, intentionally frustrating the audience because he didn't have the ability to write an ending that could satisfy the massive audience. (The way that Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul or The Shield or The Americans or ST DS9 or multiple seasons of Fargo all ended with a satifying series conclusion.) Chase punked out, and called it "artistic license".
@@drewwesely8853 If you seriously believe this was a "cowards way out" of an ending a TV show then you're delusional. The cowards way out would've been to have them sitting at the table, the scene slowly fades to black over the music and roll credits. David Chase is clearly trying to imply something with this ending, something that for years fans of the show have tried to reject out of pure denial. For the entire 2nd half of the Season 6 they have established more than once that when you're shot in the head you hear and see nothing, it's instantaneous death. Bobby asks Tony "You probably don't even hear it when it happens right?" during the "Sopranos Home Movies" episode and Silvio basically experiences it when Gerry Torciano is executed right beside him while they're at dinner. Silvio says to Tony that he "didn't even hear the shot as it was happening." The last scene is very clearly a callback to this concept for anyone who has actually been paying attention. I don't think there is a way to dispute it. What is up to opinion though is who shot Tony in the final scene, another thing Chase very clearly shows is Tony's paranoia in the final scene. He looks to a couple different people in the restaurant, unsure if they may be here to kill him. The shifty looking Italian man in the Members Only jacket and the 2 black men that Tony may worry are another one of the mobs "unidentified black males". Personally I think personally the correct answer is that The man in the Members Only Jacket is there to kill Tony, him walking into the bathroom before Tony dies is a reference to The Godfather when Micheal Corleone goes to the bathroom to retrieve the gun before committing a double murder. The Members Only jacket is a reference back to Eugene from the first episode of season 6 titled "Members Only" in that episode Vito points out Eugene's jacket, no reason to do that unless it's foreshadowing, especially considering the jacket brand is literally the name of the episode. I believe the man wearing the jacket in the finale is wearing the exact one that Eugene wore, probably a family member of Eugene who discovered the reason behind his suicide through Eugene's wife and decided to take revenge for his relatives needless death. That answer may not be 100% confirmed but what is confirmed is that Chase didn't on a whim decide to chicken out of giving the show an ending, it ended exactly how he wanted it to. Chase had to fight with HBO executives who didn't want the show to end this way. Anyone who believes that Chase was" too lazy" to give the show a "proper ending" (whatever that means) are the truly lazy ones. People being spoonfed the best series of television ever made and not bothering to put any actual thought into what you are watching. And then when the show actually forces you to put any thought into it, all of a sudden the creators are lazy? Unbelievable. 😂
@@drewwesely8853LMAO this is so wrong on so many levels The answer right there. The fact that you think its just a “black” ending with no meaning is hilarious What show did you think that you were watching?
@@drewwesely8853 What could he have done though? Have Tony killed? In front of his family? would have made no sense, and would have been a hacky ending like Boardwalk Empire. Tony was screwed. About to be indicted and put away. Silvio was not going to survive. The Soprano reign of North Jersey was over.
This is exactly what happened when it first aired. We were all in a daze. I remember waking up later in the night to check if the cable was still working.
This whole thing has been the world through Tony's eyes. If Tony suddenly died (maybe shot in the back of the head by members only guy) and didn't know what happened next... neither do "we"... This ending was sheer brilliance!
I didn’t think so at first but I started to understand why it was so f’cking brilliant to end it that way. Gawd I miss that show or perhaps it was just the era. I can watch it over and over again.
I was so nervous for this day lol. You guys had the exact same reaction as everyone at the time. Upon rewatching this series many times you do have an appreciation for this. “You don’t even hear it when it happens” RIP Tony. I hope you guys loved the series and thank you so much for watching along with you
He died. Everytime the bell rang when someone entered it showed Tony looking up and then his POV. This was shown when AJ/Carm walked in. When meadow runs in, the bell rings, Tony looks up, and it’s black bc Tony got popped by the guy coming out of the bathroom (3 o’clock)
Oh shit,, I came here to post this about the POV every time the bell rings and that he is Def dead but in all the times I watched this and talked about it , I never put it together that if the bathroom guy shot him which is prob the most likely person that he would have came from Tony's 3 o'clock , like the omen from Chrissys "Dream"
There are a bunch of hints throughout the season that imply Tony died. My favorite is that the guy comes out of the bathroom to the right of Tony, or "3 o'clock" as they say in the military. 3 o'clock is the message Christopher gives to Tony and Paulie from hell, once Chrissy gets out of his coma. And there's lots of talk about the military in this episode. The fact that the 3 o'clock message was for Tony AND Paulie, implies Paulie is one who set Tony up, probably with New York. This episode also has odd moments where it lingers on Paulie as he looks regretful after talking to Tony, like at 17:02
Don’t forget the beginning of this episode they show an up close shot of Tony sleeping and it looks like he’s dead in a casket, and u hear organs playing in the background the ones u hear at funerals
@@dabbadoo2226no.. 3 o'clock shows up over and over in the series. And I think Pauly had tony clipped. He intentionally sent the zips to the wrong address. When n.y was talking about the takedown.. they specifically said not to touch Pauly. And since sil and bobby were now gone.. Pauly takes the throne as soon as Tony dies.
@garrybaldy327 I think Pauly did. Look at his face when he leaves the bar after Tony offers hom construction. He looks shocked when tony offered... and sad and guilty when he goes outside.. N.Y. even said Pauly was not to be touched when they were planning the attacks. You never really see the other capo flip.. Pauly only brings up his kid after Tony says he might have flipped.. I think Pauly whacked him. Tony and all 3 capos are now gone.. Pauly takes the throne and is in good standing with N.y. .. it's perfection
Yeah we got hints before, when Silvio saw a guy got shot in front of him, and didn’t even hear a gunshot; when Bobby told Tony “you probably won’t even hear it”
Popular theories: 1. The girl with AJ was a NY plant. 2. Patsy and Pauly switches sides (Patsy was still pissed about his twin getting killed by the sopranos crew in season 1 and Pauly is just an opportunist). 3. Tony gets shot by the guy at the counter coming back out of the bathroom from his 3 o’clock position (remember Chris’ near death experience). 4. If meadow would have managed to park on the first try, she would have been sitting there, blocking the gunman. She was Tony’s guardian angel throughout the show, but fell short this time.
As another thought (and I like this a lot): patsy and Paulie did conspire with NY to take out Tony, but they never got to execute, because some civilian relative of Eugene got his revenge first. That would explain the hit in front of the family, which patsy and paulie would probably have avoided. The members only guy also does not come across like a pro.
So a few things regarding the ending of the series. David Chase actually had wanted to end the show after season 4 feeling he’d lost creativity but writers Terry Winter & Matthew Weiner convinced him he needed to still finish a lot of the character arcs. They’ve said Chase decided on the black screen ending around that time, so it was planned far in advance but he never told anyone. It wasn’t in the script for the final episode and was done in editing afterwards so even the actors didn’t know. The final scene of the show was filmed at Holsten’s in Bloomfield, New Jersey and the booth they sat at with the jukebox is still there with a sign that reads “reserved for the Soprano family”, yet fans can come and sit and dine. Chase had eluded to many different scenarios since the shows ending as to Tony’s fate but never settled on anything. He truly wanted to leave it up to the viewer to decide how they think it goes. There was quite a bit of foreshadowing and make of it what you will moments throughout the show and in the final season including; In Season 6 Bobby and Tony are sitting in the boat at the cottage and Bobby tells Tony regarding getting shot “you probably never hear it when it happens”. Also not much later when Jerry Torciano gets murdered at dinner with Silvio, the gun shot is heard after blood splatters on Silvio, and he tells the guys later he didn’t hear it until after he realized it happened. Also after Tony and Bobby’s fist fight when Tony is sitting alone on the dock there’s a bell on the boat that keeps ringing as it hits the dock and Tony keeps looking over at it after it rings. It’s almost identical to the doorbell that rings in the diner in the final scene every time someone new opens the door and Tony looks up, which happens to be the final sequence of the scene. Most tellingly I think (and least well known) when the camera zooms in on the jukebox as Tony is looking for songs to play take a look at the song by Journey that would have played right after “Don’t Stop Believing”……… Any way you want it ;)
Another foreshadowing you may recall is when AJ is arrested for trying to whack JR. Tony slams AJ up against the car and starts yelling at him. AJ got the idea from when Tony would watch GF1 and say that his favorite scene was when Michael went to the bathroom in the diner to grab the gun hidden behind the stall.
The scene cuts back and forth from Tony's perspective and the door...back and forth....when it flips back to Tony for the last time (from his eyes), the bell tolls and it's black....he's dead and it was likely the guy coming back from the bathroom "at 3 o'clock"....Tony was just telling Carm about the troubles and that made him now a liability...and the Bobby line earlier when he says you don't even see it coming was foreshadowing...and remember when Tony was near death (coma) and he heard Meadows voice calling him back - unfortunately even Meadow was too late this time...on a re-watch, the ending was well crafted like the rest of the show (even if in the moment we all lost our minds)
The only thing better than watching the entire run of the Sopranos is rewatching the entire run of the Sopranos! I've lost count how many times ive been through it!
David Chase was focusing on all the different random customers in the diner because that’s how Tony’s life is like. Constantly having to “look over his shoulder”
“You need the cats for rats” my favorite quote this man has said while watching this show. The meaning behind that 😂😂 them cats will let you know who ain’t supposed to be in the house literally
My personal opinion. The cat coming to Paulie at the end, because it was Paulie who gave Tony up. Probably was the one who set up Tony at the end to save his own ass because he was too afraid of dying in a war started by Tony
Just remember the very beginning of this episode, they show a close up of Tony sleeping and it looks like he’s dead and u hear organs in the background the ones they play at funerals…. It was all foreshadowing Tony’s death at the end
I definitely thought my cable went out back in 2007! I did lots of swearing about it afterwards!! Thanks for your reactions, I enjoyed you doing this iconic show!
YUP that was more or less everyones reaction to the ending. I got up and angrily smacked the cable box and TV and being pissed off along with my brother trying to see if the signal went out hahahaha. Golden ! SOPRANOS is hands down the nest series to date! Love you both .. Shout ut from Mexico!!!!
David Chase said in one of his interviews that Tony died... do you remember that Tony once said (in one episode) that people like him end up in prison or in the dirt....
I rewatched the entire series for the third time with you guys. You we're a blast to rewatch it with. Great commentary and even better laughs! Gonna miss it. ❤
Your reaction to the black screen took me back to that Sunday night in 2007 when myself and all of America was like WTF 😮😡🤬 David Chase left it to the audience to figure it out....but yes, Tony was taken out by that guy in the Members Only jacket who walked into the bathroom.
You got to experience what all us experienced long ago. The fact you still had the same reaction was priceless. Was fun re-watching this with you's 2, enjoyed it, thanks!
''At the end, you probably don't hear anything, everything just goes black'' Just like Bobby said, it just goes black. It was us that were killed, and then it went black and we don't see the Sopranos life anymore.
Love this ending. People would be mad if you saw him get shot and mad if you didn’t. He didn’t show it but he got killed. They have a ton of videos that break it down. “You probably don’t even hear it when it happens”- you know that even if he didn’t get killed ( which he did) his gang is all broken up and the indictments are coming. It’s just who did it? Little Carmine? Butch? Did Paulie flip? There are also some great videos explaining how Little Carmine may have been playing both sides to try and sabotage both Tony and Phil’s crew so he can be boss. Although he says he didn’t want it, he screwed up that meeting with Tony and Phil by bringing up his dead brother. I think little Carmine played dumb and was being a snake the whole time.
I don't think so because there was actually an episode they never did giving closure to that. Where Chase had written that at some point they returned to the Russians place and he was there but had brain damage and couldn't remember what happened to him. So the fact that episode was pulled makes me believe that the Russian had no bearing in the last episode in terms of Tony's death@@anthonyzarate9807
Actually it was presumed to be revenge from Gene who Tony wouldn’t let leave after he and his wife came into a lot of money. The guy who hung himself. Remember when he killed a guy in the diner. Also, he was wearing a members only jacket. Chase set that up at the 1st ep of this season. I believe he directed the 1st ep of this season and the last ep.
@@demonized3299 Genes wife who hated Tony. They were rich and Tony wouldn’t let Gene out. She was crying about it. Remember she said something about hoping he gets whacked? Also, connect the members only jackets. Also, it’s no coincidence that Chase Directed that episode and this one. Took years for this to be clear to me but after watching it - it’s extremely clear. Chase even said “everything is right there on the screen.”
😂❤️❤️❤️ Asia, BJ, when I watch this, I thought my power went out in the house. LMAO didn’t find out the real meaning behind it until years later when they explained the ending of the Sopranos,,, Tony gets assassinated at the table.😞😞
Your reaction to the ending was amazing 🤣I literally thought my cable cut out when it first aired. Thank you for this amazing journey you guys let us go on with you. I've watched this show so many times and it's still my favorite show every rewatch. I have loved every reaction for every episode you guys did.
The beauty of this show is David Chase’s writing and how much you actually have to think with this show. All the signs were there to let you know…”I bet you don’t even hear when it happens right” so ya….Tony’s brains were blown out in front of his family right as meadow walked in. We saw that whole last scene from Tony’s POV and fading to black means that’s what he saw as he got shot. As for Meadow and her struggle to park….this was significant because Meadow was always Tony’s guardian angel. When he was in his coma…it was Meadows voice that brought him back to life. Her taking forever to park also left Tony’s “3 o clock” wide open. If you remember When Christopher went to hell in his coma he had a message for Tony and it was “3 o clock” She would have been in the shooters way had she been able to just park right the first time. Also what was Tony’s favorite scene in Godfather? When he hides a gun in a bathroom of a restaurant then takes everyone out. As for The Guy at the bar, he was wearing a Members only jacket and if you remember there is an episode called Members only. Gene wore a members only jacket when he put a hit on some guy that owed $$ inside of a restaurant. So he was obviously the hitman. This is why this finale is amazing because even all the years later people are still coming up with their own version of what happened and who did it. This ride has been so fun with y’all. Please go watch Many saints of Newark. There’s a lot of foreshadowing in that movie as well into Tony’s life in this game.
So glad i found you guys. Very rare for me to find fellow black soprano fans and reviews. I suggest you guys also check out sopranos movie. Many saints of newark. It goes back to tony soprano teenage years. Where it shows his bond with Christopher father. Tony's hero.
The ending was genius. It foreshadows what death would be like when it comes throughout the whole series and then again with Tony and Bobby’s last real conversation. You never even hear the shot! But why Chase ended it like that wasn’t more so for Tony’s death but more for the death of the viewer. Tony’s story was over no matter what. If he didn’t die at the end then he was going to jail for the rest of his life. The story began and ends with Tony and in that world things continue to move forward but now the story would continue through another
I love the last moment with AJ when Tony puts his hand on him. The ONLY good thing Tony did as a father was shelter AJ from the mob, he was terrible father but he broke the cycle.
Then AJ gets to see his father's head explode in front of him, covering him in blood and brain matter... I bet that sent AJ into a deep depression and he probably committed suicide. 😢
@@mattwatson No there’s a recent superbowl commercial that shows current day Meadow and AJ together. You can find it on youtube but David Chase confirmed that the commercial is canon to the Sopranos world so I guess AJ managed to get through it
The entire series is from Tony’s perspective, for the most part. Every other episode ends with music playing over the credits. Remember back to when Bobbi said that “When it happens you probably don’t even hear it”. Tony also said “There’s only two ways out of this life, in the can or dead.” The sudden cut to black was Tony getting shot in the head by the guy who went into the bathroom. He was wearing a “Members Only” jacket, which is a notorious clothing choice for mobsters. He also looked over at Tony 3 times. Notice Paulie’s facial expressions after his last meetings with Tony. It’s mine and others theory that Paulie sold him out to save his skin. Might not be true, that much is ambiguous. Originally, David Chase left it open and refused to tell anyone if it really meant Tony was killed. Finally, in 2021, he confirmed that Tony did in fact get killed, right in front of his entire family, as the bell that rung was likely Meadow coming through the front door. This is also the only episode that cuts to black and is silent. When this originally aired, a ton of people thought their cable went out right at the worst time lol Tony got whacked, there’s no more ambiguity to the ending.
27:30 - So, I watched this on TV live. Girlllll, we thought our cable went out. Then everyone started calling each-other. The writer didn’t confirm it meant he was dead, for years. I was pissed. “Did they cut something out?” Nope? 😂
Here’s the correct interpretation of the ending: Tony Soprano was shot. The blackness is Tony’s POV; the entire last scene is shot from Tony face, the diner door bell rings, Tony looks up > we see his POV. David Chase said “its all there,” and it literally is (rewatch it after reading this, its obvious) here’s the explanation: - Christopher’s 3 oclock meaning - 3 onion rings at table - 3 people at table - Meadow 3 attempts of parallel parking - Junior’s “All things come in 3’s” - This would be the THIRD attempt on Tony’s life - “You probably don’t hear it when it happens” - Tribute to Tony’s favourite Godfather scene - Member’s Only Jacket goes to washroom to get gun (like Al Pacino did) - Carmela is the third person to walk through the door at Holsten’s - Tony is shot at his 3 oclock - 3rd “Don’t Stop” verse is where it goes black - “Third strike and im out right?” - Tony Ending of Many Saints - Tony waiting for Dickie at Holsten’s who died.. Holsten’s the start and end for Tony. Constantly looking at the door for dickie
LOL, the ending. Same deal here. I was at work and taped it, and thought for a few seconds the recording had fucked up in some way. Then the credits arrived, and I was like "No... no, ohhhh you sneaky BASTARDS! " The non-ending ending.
I like to think David Scatino's son Eric and Sal Vitro's son Paul, met up while taking some classes at Montclair State, went out, got drunk a few times, and learned from each other that Tony Soprano had had a negative impact on their families and plotted to contract with someone else to take Tony out. Maybe with some help from Eugene Pontecorvo's wife and perhaps his son also?
Paulie turned on Tony; his apprehension to takeover Carlo's gig wasn't because of his age, but it was due to him joining New York. When the last sit down is over, Paulie and Butch have an interaction. Paulie knew Tony was finished.
I'm with BJ, The family comes together and thats the way I'll remember it no matter what everyone else says, including the writers! Great reactions & thanks to Asia & BJ...
Notice the guy wearing the members only jacket? My theory is he was Eugenes brother and he shot Tony, just like in the godfather coming out from the bathroom.
DING! Ding! Ding! That’s a bingo! Hahaha. Nailed it. It’s not a coincidence that Chase directed that episode and the final episode. He made sure to connect the two. He said after the series aired, “Everything is right there on the screen if you look at it. It’s all there.”
@@johnnyskinwalker4095 He’s the capo who hung himself because Tony wouldn’t let him out because his family came into a ton of money. Eugene Pontecervo.
We all had the same reaction when the screen went to black. People thought there was something wrong with the cable lol. "Don't stop....." BANG, Tony is dead. Also....it has been recently confirmed that the Russian from the Pine Barrens episode survived. He climbed a tree and waited until it was safe to get away. He stumbled upon some boy scouts who were camping in the area and they helped him. In the final season they did shoot a scene where Paulie and Chris spot him at a bar. Then they shot him in the alley. David Chase didn't like the scene so he cut it from production.
Pauli definitely betrayed Tony to NY. Paulie always felt underappreciated by Tony so when in this episode Tony offers him the promotion and he looks pained when he leaves the bing, that's because he's already talking to NY. He's thinking why did you finally appreciate me when it's too late. We know Paulie was untrustworthy, he previously gave Johnny sack info because he thought that would allow him to join NY. Tony nearly whacked him on the boat because he didn't fully trust him and Paulie sensed it. Paulie would have been the most likely to take over the family too with Silvio and Bobby out, so he had a big reason to sell Tony out. Also Tony was probably going to prison if he didn't get killed, Carlo had turned informant and he had so much on him. He was screwed either way.
Really enjoyed watching this again with you both , I am a massive fan of you both and The sopranos , watch it most of the time and I like to believe with journey playing in the background that Tony went on to have a good life with the family and Paulie by his side , Don’t stop believing. ❤
This has to be the boldest ending to a tv show I’ve seen because Chase leaves it up to the audience to piece together what happened. Alot of people were initially disappointed when this episode first aired and people were saying it was the worst ending ever. However, most of the fanbase appreciates the ending now because its more effective than anything that they could’ve shown to us on the screen
Look up an analysis of the Superbowl Commercial. It makes a reasonable argument that only Meadow survived, because she was late. That was never a conclusion I came to but the argument sure gets you thinking.
I hope you guys do a little follow up video once you’ve had time to digest the ending. Either way it was a great trip through this series with you two!
The look on both your faces when you both discover it just went to black & Asia kept thinking she missed something or thinking the episode had extra footage 🤣😂 Hilarious I liked the ending; it let you 🤔 😺 "might have fleas scatching & everything 😂 I was with you on that one 🤣😂😂
Its worth mentioning that the writer finally admitted not too long ago that it was his intent that tony did get killed at the end when it went to black. It wasn't well done and was a pretty bad idea but it is what it is
I disagree, I think it was extremely well done. When Tony is sitting at the booth and looking at whose coming thru the door the audience sees it thru his eyes. Thru Tony's eyes we see meadow , then we see darkness. He got smoked and never saw it coming.
I remember freaking out when the screen went black. We thought maybe too many people were watching and it glitched…and MANY HOURS LATER, we had to accept it. I kinda felt like they whacked the viewers. I think it called back to the conversation Tony had with Bobby. Bobby said something like “I wonder if you see it coming or if everything goes black.” Or something. It was the scene in Bobby’s boat when Tony & Carm went to Bobby & Janice’s for T’s birthday.
The guy with the members only jacket at the end, I think was the one that got Tony. Apparently, he's the brother of the capo that hung himself earlier in the series so he probably held a grudge against Tony for his brother.
"Oh the movie never ends, it goes on and on and on and on." This is David Chase saying the audience that they will always be able to rewatch the series.
I know this is cynical, but I think the real reason they decided on this ending is because they wanted to leave their options open for a reboot or a Sopranos movie. If James Gandolfini was still alive they would’ve 100% rebooted the show by now with Tony as an older man.
The guy in the members only jacket comes back out of the bathroom to kill Tony. From that direction he’d be at Tony’s 3 o’clock. Fulfilling the prophecy from Chris’ coma dream.
"You probably don't even hear it; everything just fades to black" ... It has been suggested that the fella in the Members Only jacket is (a "zip") coming out of the restroom, Tony looks up to see Meadow, and everything fades to black for Tony. Personally, I'd like to think Tony survived, as an FBI team swarmed in before he could get off the fatal shot, however the TV commercial with Meadow doing the drive from NY, in the electric Chevy, (produced by David Chase) suggests her family was murdered, by her jewelry the camera comes up close on, and the hurst behind A.J, when they hug, I think he maybe in black clothing. Also notice the Cat on the wall in the restaurant is similar to the one staring at Christopher' picture on the wall... How cool, Waldon aka Wild Bill Guarnere from Band of Brothers, took out Phil. You both are fantastic! thank you for keeping the entertainment rolling our way.
The cat seems to be the spirit of Ade. Hopelessly in love with Christopher & she never liked Paulie very much. Ade always dressed with a cat like vibe in her style.

End of an era. Loved watching this with you guys. I saw every episode when it originally aired. It was a Sunday evening thing at the in-laws. Either the guy went in the bathroom and came out Godfather style, or you don't see the last person that came in. You don't see it coming until after it happens. Just darkness. Or maybe the show didn't start at the beginning of the story, and it doesn't end there either. Tony goes to prison. The kids continue doing their thing. Sil sgays in the hospital. Paulie is stuck with the cat. Take it how you want it
The voice of the guy who brokered the meeting is George Paglieri one of the fictional analogs of the Five Families of NY. The Lupertazzis were the only other one mentioned by name that I remember.
There is a scene where Tony is talking with Bobby in the boat, and Bobby says that if someone gets shot, they don't even notice their death, everything just goes dark. Supposedly, this is the key to the final episode.
They repeated it in the last scene of the prior episode. The show almost never does monologue flashbacks, so it is very signifigant.

AJ accuses Tony of being a hypocrite and that he sits there with a bowl of ice cream saying that the scene when Michael gets revenge on the men who attempted to kill his father is his favorite scene of all time.
A ending still talked about 17 years later.
Imo opinion the worst ending in show history. It was smart cause ppl still talk about it but dumb
(The way that Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul or The Shield or The Americans or ST DS9 or multiple seasons of Fargo all ended with a satifying series conclusion.)
Chase punked out, and called it "artistic license".
Silvio says to Tony that he "didn't even hear the shot as it was happening."
The last scene is very clearly a callback to this concept for anyone who has actually been paying attention.
@@drewwesely8853LMAO this is so wrong on so many levels
The answer right there. The fact that you think its just a “black” ending with no meaning is hilarious
What show did you think that you were watching?
@@drewwesely8853 What could he have done though? Have Tony killed? In front of his family? would have made no sense, and would have been a hacky ending like Boardwalk Empire. Tony was screwed. About to be indicted and put away. Silvio was not going to survive. The Soprano reign of North Jersey was over.

It was not through Tony’s eyes.. it was through multiple characters eyes.. Vito. Christopher. Carmela. A.J.. best show ever with the worst ending.

I was so nervous for this day lol. You guys had the exact same reaction as everyone at the time. Upon rewatching this series many times you do have an appreciation for this. “You don’t even hear it when it happens” RIP Tony. I hope you guys loved the series and thank you so much for watching along with you

I love the “do you want to rewind this again ?
Feel like I'm the only one on the planet to think "ooh, cool way to end" back then lol
@@dabbadoo2226nah it’s an interesting one that I’ve heard plenty of times, this guy just sucks at explaining it lol. Google sopranos rule of three
@@dabbadoo2226no..
Who gave the order? Without an answer to that, your theory blows up in your face
Was so awesome watching the Series again with Asia and BJ. This was a masterpiece.

@@joshuacoldwaterThank goodness Breaking Bad didn't have a similar "you decide what happened" ending!
The last episode was told from Tony's perspective. You don't realize you're dead if you don't see it coming. It was lights out for Tony.
So a few things regarding the ending of the series.
David Chase actually had wanted to end the show after season 4 feeling he’d lost creativity but writers Terry Winter & Matthew Weiner convinced him he needed to still finish a lot of the character arcs. They’ve said Chase decided on the black screen ending around that time, so it was planned far in advance but he never told anyone. It wasn’t in the script for the final episode and was done in editing afterwards so even the actors didn’t know. The final scene of the show was filmed at Holsten’s in Bloomfield, New Jersey and the booth they sat at with the jukebox is still there with a sign that reads “reserved for the Soprano family”, yet fans can come and sit and dine. Chase had eluded to many different scenarios since the shows ending as to Tony’s fate but never settled on anything. He truly wanted to leave it up to the viewer to decide how they think it goes. There was quite a bit of foreshadowing and make of it what you will moments throughout the show and in the final season including;
In Season 6 Bobby and Tony are sitting in the boat at the cottage and Bobby tells Tony regarding getting shot “you probably never hear it when it happens”.
Most tellingly I think (and least well known) when the camera zooms in on the jukebox as Tony is looking for songs to play take a look at the song by Journey that would have played right after “Don’t Stop Believing”………
Any way you want it ;)
Another foreshadowing you may recall is when AJ is arrested for trying to whack JR.

My personal opinion. The cat coming to Paulie at the end, because it was Paulie who gave Tony up. Probably was the one who set up Tony at the end to save his own ass because he was too afraid of dying in a war started by Tony

''At the end, you probably don't hear anything, everything just goes black''
Just like Bobby said, it just goes black. It was us that were killed, and then it went black and we don't see the Sopranos life anymore.
He actually never said «it all goes black» watch it again
He said you probably don’t even hear it when it happens… nothing was said about going black
I personally think there is a good chance it is pay back for "Slava", the Russian Paulie & Chrissy try to eliminate
Nice one !

All 3 of them were shot.
Tony’s hell is not being able to see the one person in his life he loved more than anything, Meadow.
@@giodagrate5369 Nah.
David Chase confirmed nothing. He just said he always planned to kill Tony while driving into NYC.
When this originally aired, a ton of people thought their cable went out right at the worst time lol
Tony got whacked, there’s no more ambiguity to the ending.
One of the best endings in TV history.

Thanks for getting into The Sopranos, you two! Loved watching your reaction to all this!!! Cant wait to see what series comes next.
Here’s the correct interpretation of the ending:
Tony Soprano was shot. The blackness is Tony’s POV; the entire last scene is shot from Tony face, the diner door bell rings, Tony looks up > we see his POV. David Chase said “its all there,” and it literally is (rewatch it after reading this, its obvious) here’s the explanation:
- Christopher’s 3 oclock meaning
- 3 onion rings at table
- 3 people at table
- Meadow 3 attempts of parallel parking
- Junior’s “All things come in 3’s”
- This would be the THIRD attempt on Tony’s life
- “You probably don’t hear it when it happens”
- Tribute to Tony’s favourite Godfather scene - Member’s Only Jacket goes to washroom to get gun (like Al Pacino did)
- Carmela is the third person to walk through the door at Holsten’s
- Tony is shot at his 3 oclock
- 3rd “Don’t Stop” verse is where it goes black
- “Third strike and im out right?” - Tony
Ending of Many Saints - Tony waiting for Dickie at Holsten’s who died.. Holsten’s the start and end for Tony. Constantly looking at the door for dickie
Tony is murdered at the table as the music cuts.
“You probably don’t even hear it when it happens”
Bobby bacala
LOL, the ending. Same deal here. I was at work and taped it, and thought for a few seconds the recording had fucked up in some way. Then the credits arrived, and I was like "No... no, ohhhh you sneaky BASTARDS! " The non-ending ending.

That look on your face when it ended is priceless. I laughed so hard.
@@mikimiyazakiThis was the actors only role and he just so happens to bear an uncanny resemblance to Eugene while wearing the same jacket

One of the most anticipated and talked about finales. We all felt the same way.
David Chase done that to mess with us
Tony was assasinated by the man in the members only jacket who came out the bathroom. He was killed in front of his family !!

“Is there a hidden episode?” LOL
You know Tony probably wished Chris was around when all this was going down.

We were all like that at the end.
It was his end.😂
I haven't watched the end in a bunch of years, but it was definitely a hit (look at the juke box and the songs they highlight with 'hit.').
Members only jacket smoked Tony. Great watching with you guys. go Lions.
@@gregsgoogle2947 Right, even a Hit is a Hit episode, when she was meowing during that terrible song and Bokeem? was going right along with it, and Christopher realized it was bull 💩
Take it how you want it
Thanks so much for providing a great reaction to literally the greatest television show of all time. 👍
Toney got wacked by the guy in the Members Only jacket!!
You both embraced the show so well.❤
I remember watching it live at my brothers house. He got so mad and talked about it years after.
thanks for the journey on this one Asia and BJ - yall made this a great re-watch!
The voice of the guy who brokered the meeting is George Paglieri one of the fictional analogs of the Five Families of NY. The Lupertazzis were the only other one mentioned by name that I remember.
