Thank you all for the support from the beginning to the end! Please feel free to leave us suggestions for future shows we should do, as well as any movie recommendations!
You guys should definitely watch the movie The Drop with Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini. It was the last movie James Gandolfini did before he passed away.
I think it was a fantastic ending. Because all these years later, people are STILL talking about it and debating what the ending means. Many people believe that everything suddenly going black represents Tony being shot in the head and killed. But, either way, the fact that people still debate it's ending is way better than any definitive ending
Amazing reactions and outro to a great show! It was so much fun watching the show thru your eyes. Love the TBR font change for this episode to match the soprano's "R" gun! Nice touch and your outro blackout super cool!. Keep bringing your great content and smart and fun comments. Thumbs up!!!!
I feel like yous guys' reaction to the ending captured the real-time feelings of the Sopranos-watching world at large, going from unsure, to "what just happened", to anger and disbelief, to deeper thought, to realizing that it might be a brilliant ending not only for the story itself but how it struck such a powerful cord with so many people who are still talking about it. It's been great rewatching the show with yous!
I remember the season finally back in 2007. People was reacting and some even calling their cable company because they thought they cable got disconnected lol.
- Christopher’s 3 oclock meaning - 3 onion rings at table - 3 people at table - Meadow 3 attempts of parallel parking - Junior’s “All things come in 3’s” - 3 attempts at Tony’s life - “probably don’t hear it when it happens” - Tribute to Tony’s favourite Godfather scene - Member’s Only Jacket goes to washroom to get gun - Carmela the third person to walk through the door at Holsten’s - Tony is shot at his 3 o’clock - 3 onion rings - 3 people at table - 3rd “Don’t Stop” verse is where Tony is shot - “Third strike and im out right?” - The church bell rings after getting out of the hospital in Season 6A and the camera immediately goes from Tony’s face to his POV, looking at the church bell - The bells on the dock ring when Tony is sitting and staring out at the lake in “Sopranos Home Videos”. The camera switches to Tony’s POV when he looks over at the bells - Gene kills Teddy Spirodakis (TS) at gun point in his Members Only Jacket.. Tony gets shot by members only jacket 2.0 at gunpoint - Tony is awake in bed in the Sopranos pilot.. Tony is sleeping to funeral music in the finale - Silvio didnt even HEAR it until “it happened” when he was eating in the restaurant with that NY guy that got shot up. Guy gets shot, blood splattered.. THEN gun shots. It makes sense that Meadow is the last thing/person that Tony sees before he dies. In many ways, she was his guardian angel. The one person who never feared him. The black screen is Tony’s POV. He’s dead. Tony was set up by NY and Paulie/Patsy. You can see the look on their faces (Paulie guilt, Patsy’s hatred for Tony that dates back to Season 2). Tony had Phil killed in front of Phil’s family, so they did the same thing back to Tony - shot in front of his family
I came close..but it was so everyone who knew would get it..I said imagine if they have an equipment malfunction the last 30 seconds of the show and the screen turned black
I remember once I said this series doesn’t even hit its stride until the 3rd season, and some other commenter went off on me. 😂 But honestly, those who follow TBR and Sam are respectful and caring, and would never spoil the fun.
@@michaelsegriff3362 yea when a show is rough/bad for half its run and its like oh you just gotta get through 30-60 episodes THEN it gets good! lol sure or i could go do something actually fun with my time
@@LeMaqnifique That's fine. But clues don't make good television. Richie's death wouldn't have been as amazing of a scene if we just got clues about what Janice was gonna do.
The scene with Junior and Tony just kills me every time. Dominic Chianese is outstanding in his portrayal, and truly made Junior one of the most memorable characters in the history of television.
@@samantha_schmitt your reaction is pretty much how many millions of people felt when the show ended back in whatever year it was!!! Many of us thought that the cable went out!! And now you guys get to join the debate that's been going on for 20 years plus!! Did Tony Soprano get whacked? and is that why it went black? Personally I'm still torn!! I'm hoping that he doesn't get assassinated but it's all so devastating to think about him getting shot in front of his family!!
@@bernardsalvatore1929 In an interview for a 10th anniversary book David Chase referred to this in passing as Tony's "death scene". When the interviewers asked him if he realized what he had just said, his response was "F*ck you guys". After this the consensus is that Tony was killed, and the debate turned to who done it. Was it Phil Leotardo's plans still in motion after he died? Was it Phil's advisers double-crossing Tony after getting rid of Phil? Was it Carlo who had been in hiding rather than "disappeared"? Was it Patsy Parisi as revenge for his brother Phil?
Crazy when you think how Paulie and Janice of all people are among the few who actually survive everything. Paulie will have no problem becoming loyal to New York, and Janice always finds a way to land on her feet.
The last time you see the NY guys, they're meeting at a barbers shop Paulie's next scene is him walking into satriales asking if anybody needs barbers scissors
The comment AJ makes to Tony about focusing on the good times is a throwback to the first season where it rains heavy and they end up at Arties restaurant as they are closing and he tells them to focus on the good times.
That shot of Paulie by himself at Satriale’s sums up season 6 pretty much. Majority of the guys who used to hang there are either dead or close to death (Syl). Everything fell apart in the last season and all the charm and charisma that made Tony likeable was replaced by bitterness and paranoia. Sopranos is the best show of all time. Period. Also the ending will grow on you over time, trust me.
@@thorfox3562 bro I binged it when I first watched Sopranos and the sudden tonal shift half way through season 6 was so depressing 🤣🤣 it’s like David Chase was saying fuck you to everyone that was rooting for Tony.
Yup. I think back to season 2, when Tony's scratching his rash on his arm with the show polisher and they all go outside to investigate that car crash and all the guys are outside. It's a pretty big gut punch seeing all the emptiness outside the pork store now
@@clarktownsend8991 Nah. Better Call saul was always very flawed, that cartel thing grafted into the show with barely any connection to Saul was always a clunker. The Wire is certainly a masterpiece, but it's more prosaic and direct.
That ending gives me chills So glad they didn't choose the obvious ending, tony lies in blood, camera slowly moves away This ending is genius because what we as an audience, did not see. Its clear what happened to him, but we didnt see it Best ending and very hartbreaking James gandolfini was so good that it hurts
i think the ending is great but disagree that it's clear what happens. the point of view theory ultimately doesn't work: the camera shots are not exact from tony's point of view, they are too close to the door to be. therefore, a pattern that would lead to blackness being tony's exact point of view is not established. i think the point is more that it doesn't matter what happens, the ending is more abstract - life will go on for whomever is left, as the series stops with tony's face and the words "don't stop"
@@michaelfarkas2257the ending is emblematic of the series as a whole. It’s gritty and hardcore, minimalistic, and distant from all conventional understanding of narratives. Masterpiece.
@@michaelfarkas2257Nah, Tony got popped. It's obvious he's a gonner. It's not even an ambiguous ending. People get angry just because they want to see Tony getting offed.
You guys are without a doubt the best Sopranos reaction series. Almost every other channel who’s watched the series just stares the whole time, with the occasional “oh wow”. You guys actually provide funny commentary and have interesting thoughts about the show.
FRR Friends Request Reviews are pretty good... especially since they get all the jokes. All of the stuff that Sopranos fans laugh at that a causual watcher or first time watcher doesnt laugh it, they catch
Tony and Bobby discussed death a few episodes back, this is how Bobby said it probably goes. It's the perfect ending, it makes you feel abruptness and loss. There is nothing, it just happens and its over.
@@meself4955 Do you mean Gerry Torciano? Cause that scene in retrospect was almost like a spoiler for the ending. Sil is just eating and all of a sudden he just has blood on his face. Didn't hear or see anything. That's exactly how I took the ending, it's just that we see it from Tony's perspective so everything goes black.
Great reaction! Loved following the show with you guys. Some observations about the ending: The guy in the jacket goes into the bathroom, just like the murder scene in The Godfather. He's wearing a Members Only jacket, the title of the first episode of the season, the jacket Eugene wore before he killed himself. It was also worn by the hitmen who shot up Silvio in the parking lot. Meadow can be regarded as Tony's guardian angel - her presence by his side helped save him when he nearly died after Junior shot him. In the montage at the beginning of the season, the voiceover describes the "Guardian Angel" while focusing on her. She's the only one absent from the final dinner scene, which means she can't be there to save Tony. Her absence leaves an open spot to Tony's right - meaning he would be shot from a 3-o-clock position. Remember how "3-o-clock" was a message Christopher delivered to Tony after his near death experience? Bobby's words from the boat trip are repeated in a flashback at the end of episode 20 to drive home their signifance. "You probably don't even hear it when it happens". The episode ends in an abrupt cut to black, total silence. David Chase has refused to confirm the ending, but he has remarked that it's all there if you look at the clues. I think it's clear, Tony dies the moment the show ends.
Yeah most of me agrees and that leaves us with the question as to how did the family deal with seeing that?? I always thought it wouldn't be a bad idea for a movie or maybe a short series on what happened in the aftermath and what Carmella herself wound up doing!? I always like the scenario where perhaps she seeks out Furio!
The beauty of this ending is that at first it annoys you but the more you think, read and hear theories about it, when you start to connect all the dots that were planted throughout the entire show, it becomes the greatest finale of all time. Thanks for the reactions you guys✌🏻
It’s definitely not the greatest show ending of all time as it still leaves this vagueness and emptiness after watching it. But at the same time it is a great ending. We started with these people at a random point in their lives and now we end with it at a random point in their lives. It’s not exactly a definitive ending but it’s a solid ending for the way the show was written.
Most brilliant ending ever. The whole show is basically from Tony's perspective more or less, and when he's dead, boom, the show goes black. Lots of clues throughout this season as to what the ending means, as you have researched in the outro. The deepest clue (that may be over-reading things) is "3 o'clock", the message Christopher gave to Tony when Christopher was shot in the 2nd season and went to "limbo". "3 o'clock" from a direction standpoint would be directly to Tony's right, which is where the guy with the members-only jacket would have emerged from the bathroom to shoot him.
doesnt make sense. the series is not from tony's perspective and neither are the last shots. there are tons of scenes without tony in them, and the last shots are too close to the door to be his perspective.
@@michaelfarkas2257 The series was definitely from his perspective, or at least it started that way. He was the narrator in the first season and in this final episode, we're looking at him looking around.
The night this aired so many people called their cable companies thinking there was a glitch or an interuption in service. This episode was the reason i couldn't rewatch the show with you wonderful kids. Love you guys.😄👍
Still to this day when David Chase is asked, he says it is open to the fans interpretation. He has never once confessed, nor deny the Tonys gotten shot. Is interviews on talking Sopranos
@@tucko11 yes he did. In an interview in November of 2021 David Chase finally admitted Tony was to die. His original plan was for Tony to be driving back from his meeting in NYC ans going through the Lincoln Tunnel. There was going to be a car following Tony's into the tunnel and then an areal shot of the tunnel and the car following Tony drives out but Tony's car never does. Chase changed his mind when he was driving and saw a dinner thought that's the type of place Tony should get it. He also stated that it was intention from the start that no one watching the show was to see Tony get killed. But yes Tony did get killed.
Look, I know it's not the most important thing, but I genuinely loved Sam looping her arm into Dan's, preparing to do the ending discussion. It's just really nice to see you two connecting and enjoying being together.
I've been silently watching along with you guys now for over 5 months. It's been hard not interacting, yours is the best sopranos reaction. I'll miss this... Especially on Sundays I'd wake up and watch you guys watch Sopranos. Fantastic. 🇿🇦
“ don’t stop believing” when this episode came out the majority of people had the same reaction as you all did including me. For years the writer David Chase refused to discuss the meaning of the ending and why it is the way it is. But finally not to long ago after being asked about in an interview for the millionth time he relented and spilled the beans. He basically said yeah Tony got his head blown off at the end. Presumably by the guy wearing the members only jacket, which was the same jacket that the guy who hung himself because he couldn’t get out of the life and move to Florida wore. There is some for shadowing like when Sil didn’t hear the shots at the restaurant when a the guy next to him got whacked. And when tony and Bobby were out on the boat and they say I bet you don’t even hear the shot when you get it. Hence it cuts to black and Tony didn’t hear the shots. Also at the beginning of this episode Tony is laying on his back asleep kind of like he would look in an open coffin. But yeah Tony got whacked in front of his whole family. The end. It’s the best show. I still watch it all the way through a couple of times a year or so. You all are the best loved your reactions on these.
@@JayGeeForty He never fully admitted it. He said he had another final scene planned, a death scene, that he discarded. That scene isn't the one you're seeing in the show. But yeah, it's obvious Tony is dying in this scene.
David Chase did let it slip (mostly) shortly after the series ended, in an interview with Richard Belzer. I wish I could find the interview again. He brought up the New York restaurant scene with Silvio and the conversation between Bobby and Tony.
@@MrTomlette I get the clues, but from the other side of things, they could've been just put there to mislead the audience into thinking he was going to/did die.
But it's the end. There's no surprise after, like: "we mislead you to think that Tony died. Surprise, here he is!" The idea of it being intentionally misleading sounds like hopeful thinking. Either the clues are there for the ending or not.
When Chrissy told them about his father in hell he said he is whacked every night over and over the same way he died in life... I think it's Tony walking in and having to relive his final moments over and over.
Also, mad props to you both for realizing in about 30 minutes what took me WEEKS to figure out, and Daniel is right; I am STILL thinking about it. I was initially part of the "Tony's not dead" crowd, but the more I thought about it, and especially after watching the entire series over again many times, Tony is for sure dead, and it was brilliantly done. Honestly, what outcome would have been satisfying for such an unconventional show?? Meadow's wedding? Tony dying in jail, like Johnny Sack? Ending up alone, like Junior? The real cheat would have been wrapping up a show like this in a neat little package. Tony is dead, and we were spared seeing Carmella, Meadow, and AJ's reactions to Tony being murdered in front of them. Best. Show. Ever.
The brilliance is also that we already saw Tony’s families reactions in the first few episodes of the last season when Tony almost died. So now in the last episode we don’t need to see it.
If you go back to the scene with Bobby and Tony in the boat from the episode this season at the lake, Bobby makes a comment about "I bet you don't even hear it when it happens" or something close to that, it's been theorized this is sort of a representation of Tony's death at the end.
What I love about the final Tony/Junior scene is that out of everything Tony mentions, Junior only remembers the fact that they played catch together. None of the power, crime, money, or glory, the only thing that mattered in the end were the few fleeting moments of actual loving familial connection. Perfectly reflecting the speech Tony gives over dinner in the finale of the first season and then is reminded of by AJ in this episode.
Tony’s Dead! No Question -Every time the bell rings on the restaurant door; it’s the same, exact pattern. -Tony pops his head up quickly to see who it is. Then we see through Tony’s eyes who is who coming through the door. That is the (POV) point of view camera shot. -This pattern happens every time. -But when Meadow walks through the door, we only see black through Tony’s eyes. That is because Tony was shot and was dead before he could lay eyes on his daughter. -Remember the flashback with Bobby at the lake talking about death with Tony: “You probably don’t even hear it when it happens” (This was taken from Goodfellas) -Black screen and no music during the credits to mourn Tony. Godspeed you gangster you.
Its brilliant because the episode has really dark ending when you consider Meadow walked in on seeing that happen to her dad and Carmella and AJ being covered in blood and yet, you dont see it... but know thats what happened
That’s right. I hope the reactors see this comment. That’s exactly how it went down. Tony is dead. Is his family also dead? We don’t know. But we can be certain that Tony Sopranos was in fact killed.
@@J4ME5_ the gun doesn't have to be in the bathroom, it was prob in his pocket the entire time. the reason michael had a gun hidden in the godfather was because he knew he was going to get patted down to see if he had a gun. that's not the case here. i think he went to the bathroom in order to come out behind tony, giving him no time to react, whereas tony may have seen him approach if he had just walked up to him directly from the counter.
Speaking of how sad it was losing Gandolfini, I remember watching an episode of The Sopranos podcast, and the crew memer being interviewed broke down crying whenever he brought up a line that Tony said at the end of "The Test Dream" episode when he's on the phone with Carmela at 5am....."Is there light where you are?". Even 10yrs later the cast and crew lose it when talking about Gandolfini. He must've been very special
There’s a great New York Times Magazine essay called “Why Is Every Young Person in America Watching ‘The Sopranos’?” that goes pretty deep under the surface into the themes of the show. You all would really appreciate it now that you’ve finished the series.
Thanks for bringing this article to my attention. As a left wing Sopranos fan I've always been frustrated by some of the discourse around the show, but this article mentions some podcasts I wasn't aware of that I'll have to dive into!
That final scene has been picked over shot by shot, frame by frame, diner patron by diner patron, for years. It's just stunning to see it again, along with both of you. "Remember the good times."
@@claya7580 Yeah, all of that. I've even seen analyses of the other songs on the jukebox that surround "Don't Stop Believing." One RUclips essay I saw years ago pointed out that they're all swallowing the onion rings like communion wafers.
Agree Mongo! It was Sam's REACTION and it was real and exactly what MILLIONS of people were going through after the ending when it aired. It's the "right" initial reaction for sure! Good job TBR on black out at end. Perfect!
It’s been great rewatching this series with you guys. I was worried you would have the ending ruined, so I’m glad it wasn’t. You can really see how this show was the blueprint for the prestige television dramas that came after it.
One thing I absolutely love about the Sopranos is rewatching it is so fun, they really spell out the ending for you throughout the series if you pay attention to the details.
24:36. "What happened?" Tony got whacked that's what happened. I've left 2 other comments about that conversation with Bobby and Tony fishing about the heavy implications of it. ""probably don't even hear it when it happens, right?" they even had a flashback to it in the previous episode. It was to set up this ending
Imagine the balls they had to end the biggest tv show of all time like this, amazing...pure genius. How else would you end a show like this? It gets my heart racing every time I see it.
Been a fun ride y’all. Definitely the best reaction channel out there. The post episode discussions prove how observant and smart you two are. Definitely rewatch the series again sometime, there’s so much to unpack in this series..which is why it’s one of the greatest
Wow, you guys processed that ending very quickly! Let's face it, if--IF--that is Tony's last moment, no viewer wants to see his brains splattered all over a restaurant table. And his family's reaction. The other option is... you know that sense of unease you both referenced during the episode's final minutes? Maybe that's Tony's life for the indefinite future. Always looking over his shoulder, worrying about every stranger he sees. Big thanks to both of you, it's been a great, fun ride. Can't wait to see what you decide to do next. If you're looking for a mini-series to bide you over, might I suggest "The Looming Tower' and "The Night Manager"?
Speaking to what you mentioned about the storylines not wrapping up; to me, that's the whole point. The show constantly takes storylines that would be overly dramatized in other media and drags it down to the mundane, human level. Stories don't neatly wrap up in real life. They continue indefinitely. If you die young, all the stories around you will be unfinished. Hell, even if you die old. The Sopranos is about the most down-to-earth, human crime drama that you'll find. Loved these reactions!
The woman who was with Agent Harris is the person he got Phil Leotardo's whereabouts from. She must have heard Harris talking to Tony, and that's why she was angry. The Best Show EVER!
That's the genius of the ending, you can't spoil it, there's nothing to spoil, because it just ends. Someone asks what do you mean, and you reply indeed, what DO I mean...it just, ends.
Christopher said 3 o’clock which is the side that the shooter came from where Tony was sitting. Bobby asked Tony if you even hear it when it happens. The members only jacket was worn in a previous episode where one of Tony‘s crew killed the guy in the diner. Tony looked up on every person that the bell rang when the door open except for him because he came in with someone else.
This reaction was beyond amazing, and you’re both so smart. The reaction was so enjoyable and authentic. I’m so freakin happy you’ve had no spoilers. ❤️ thanks for this great series. What a joy it was to watch!
All the people focused on in the restaurant were allusions to people present in past "hits" or attempted hits: The boy scouts at Bobby's death scene, the guy wearing the Member's Only Jacket like Eugene, the two black dudes looking like the two guys that shot at Tony in season 1. This explains the tension throughout that scene.
Omg yes! I did a screen grab of when Tony was seeing himself sitting in the restaurant 😫😫. The (non) placement of the washroom tells me it's purgatory 😩😩. So spooky.
Thanks for the reactions, I know you guys didn't necessarily get the ending you was expecting but I'm glad I got to be a part of your guy's journey with such a great show and I can't wait to see what you react to next.👍🏽😎
I love you two. It has been such a thrill watching you experience this show. I had a similar reaction to the ending, but 16 years later I still think about it all the time!
Sam's reaction was literally all of us when we watched this in real time. Thanks for making these reaction videos, though. It's like watching it again for the first time. I think back to what Bobby said to Tony on the boat. "It probably just all goes black." But that it's us, the viewer getting whacked. That's it, shows over.
Also there are some amazing videos out there that break down the whole scene and how the bell and the looks up play into what's happening. But you weren't alone, when this aired everyone was calling their cable provider thinking they missed the last minute of the show lol
Great job guys! You made it! When the show ended the whole world went crazy on the ending, but it has a purpose and has aged well as someone who watched the series back then. But yes, people everywhere thought their HBO crashed when it cut to black! You guys should do a follow up reaction after reading/watching stuff about explanations on the finale!
I have really enjoyed watching you two watch The Sopranos. I've seen it a half dozen times and didn't plan to watch it again. You guys gave me a new way to enjoy it. Thanks!
"Semi-ambiguous" ending is why it so incredibly genius if you actually look at this scene more closely. The most important aspect of this final scene is Tony's POV after every time the door bell rings. The final time it rings we see Tony's last POV...black. Death. And thus for whom the bell tolls.
Lol you guys are so awesome tha you could wait 18yrs when your kid is grown and come back on here and I'll be clicking that notificaaaaaaaation quick as hell lol
The fact that it's actually telegraphed but the point is made. Tony went against NY and he was gonna have to watch his shoulder for the end of times. He was dead the moment Phil died.
Hi TBR & Sam. As I said on your previous Sopranos video, watching this show with you was the closest I've ever come to being able to view it for the first time again. I'll save all the theories and explanations for people much more eloquent than me, and just say thank you both so much for your reactions. Much love.
The frustration, anxiety, and confusion that you felt in this episode is the best way to know what it’s been like to be in Tony’s head. There are great actors and actresses that have made me feel for their character. But this was the only character that I got a glimpse into the character’s head. Amazing finish.
Appreciate the ride! It was a pleasure rewatching all 6 seasons of The Sopranos with you guys! Many people thought their cable boxes had shut down during that ending including me lol! It either pissed people off or for others had people saying it was a genius ending. Either way the ending of The Sopranos is still talked about today! In my opinion I also believe Tony is dead. Like Bobby said "You probably don't hear it when it happens!" 😉
I've always believed that they lived on.. thank you two for being amazing im looking forward to your future videos.. god bless from Melbourne, Australia
In 2007, people were PISSED. People were calling their cable companies thinking their service went out. My sister STILL hates the ending. I'm good with it. I think it's a fairly genius way to end this. About three years ago I convinced a friend of mine to watch the series. He loved it. Then I asked him when he was watching the final episode. He told me. I said, "Well, make sure you have time to call me afterward." He goes, "You think I'll call you after the final episode?" I said, "No, I don't THINK you'll call me, I KNOW you'll call me." He called me twenty seconds after he finished it.
Love the scene when Butch is on the phone to Phil about backing out. I didn't notice the first time. Butch wants to back out and when he gets off the phone with Phil he's lost in China town. Direction he feels Phil is taking him and New York.
Its brilliant because its a really gruesome ending when you consider Meadow walked in on seeing that happen to her dad and Carmella and AJ being covered in blood and yet, you dont see it... but know thats what happened. It was all painted for us to see and come to the inevitable conclusion without actually showing
Fave show of all time! I hung in on every reaction of yours and did not disappoint! When this happened in the moment I remember all the emotion it caused in the media the next day…if you guys start looking at the clues it makes sense. But the ending was brilliant!
I had exactly the same reaction to the ending. When I first saw the series, my adrenaline was so high that I was extremely irritated when the screen just went black and nothing happened. After a while, however, I think it's the best ending I've ever seen on a TV show.
@@dustinjackson3318Nah the whole "you probably dont hear it when it happens." Plus tony surrounded by suspicious people, followed by sudden blackness. Odds are he died right there and then and it's the last moment of tony soprano we ever witness. I think it's a great ending. People want everything laid out for them but that's boring. Some of the best movies and shows end with more questions than answers. It's often why they are referred to as good movies, because they do something lots of shows are afraid to do, make people speculate and theorize. Rather than just handing them an answer and going home.
@@ryman1933 Wrong. You said it even in your statement "People want everything laid out for them but that's boring." You're the outlier. Most people want conclusion and that doesn't make it boring. Breaking Bad is your evidence. Name one show with an implied ending for a main character that people loved. The answer is there are none.
@@dustinjackson3318 The thing, 28 weeks, prisoners, blade runner, just off the top of my head. I am sure you could find a whole list if you really want. Besides, you saying something doesn't make it true. Lots of great films make the viewers ask questions rather than just tell them. It's okay, not everyone can have a good imagination and creative thoughts, it's not your fault.
Even though I got into this series of first-time reactions (and subscribed to this great channel) later than most, I am very glad that I decided to take this ride with Daniel & Samantha back through one of the greatest television shows ever made (HBO or otherwise). I honestly can’t wait to see whatever you two decide to watch next!!!
The ending was seen through Tony’s eye’s “his POV” basically meaning he was killed instantly by the man wearing the Members Only jacket. The fade to black scene is Tony dying. You were given small hints throughout the seasons as to the possible ending one huge one being Bobby who stated a few episodes back while him and Tony were in the boat together at the cabin he says “I bet you don’t even see it when it’s coming, ya know the end.”!!!
incredible series, still remember that intro tune from way back when, and what great reactions guys ! I felt your emotions, thanks for sharing the ride
"Bye-bye, wave bye-bye, Grandpa. Bye-bye, Pop-Pop." Have enjoyed your reaction to one of my all time favourite shows thanks. If interested my theory on the ending- Tony Soprano was shot in the head just as Meadow was entering the diner. In the end scene you are seeing things through Tony's perspective (also switching between Third Person Point Of View) and the reason for the long black ending before credits is symbolising Tony being shot and dying as we are no longer able to see things from his perspective anymore. Just as Bobby Bacala predicts (S6EP13) "You probably don't even hear it when it happens, right?". I believe it was the guy in the members only jacket looking suspicious at the counter (just like Eugene Pontecorvo is wearing when he kills Teddy eating dinner at a fast-food restaurant S6E1) the guy goes to the toilet, like Michael was told to in the "Godfather" (also Tony's favourite scene from the movie mentioned by AJ S6E8) but he does come out firing and kills Tony from the 3 o'clock angle like Chrissy predicted from a dream after being shot. I believe it was Butch DeConcini ("can you see anyone?") behind the hit after Tony stomps his friend Coco Cogliano and threatened Butch. He was never gonna forgive Tony for that. Also he told Phil to whack Tony before the war even started and never liked the Jersey crew "was happy to do business with whoever is left". I think Butch wanted Phil out after Phil not so subtly threatened Butch and wouldn't let him know his whereabouts. He had Tony kill Phil which he knew would not fly a Jersey guy taking out a New York BOSS. I think he let Paulie know (he had history with NY and said he got through the last war) because he wasn't one of the 3 to be wacked. Paulie even though not the smartest gangster knew on the boat with Tony if he had of answered differently about the Ginny Sack joke "it was an off colour remark" he would of ended up with Salvatore "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero in the ocean. Also Paulie and Patsy discussion at the Bada Bing in toilet has me thinking did Paulie know something was happening and let Patsy in on it. We know Patsy tried to kill Tony for revenge of his twin brother, something he would of never forgotten so would have no problem with Tony being replaced. Also the final time Paulie see's Tony the cat walks up and sits next to him(maybe a symbol). My best guess is Butch had a meeting with Paulie at his hair dressing salon where he had previous meetings with his captains. He told Paulie what's going to happen(they had already asked Silvo and got a no by Sil killing Burt Gervasi) and he'll be taking over. Because next you see Paulie come into Satriale's store office dressed up like a boss handing out scissors(maybe gift from Butch's salon) to everyone and we all know how easily he can flip just like earlier in the show when Johnny Sack had his ear. Also I believe AJ's girlfriend Rhiannon Flammer gave up where they were going for dinner. She appears to make a note of it when Carmela tells Anthony jr. where they are going. The reason I think she is involved is one she has her photo on Butch's wall at the hair salon (told AJ she modelled) and two what she says earlier in the series when she was hooking up with AJ's friend while clubbing in New York and her friend asking about the "family business" with his Uncle. She seems to get a lot of air time as a minor character in the last episode as well. I have plenty more to my theory but would be here all day typing. But hopefully you can understand how I think it ended and got to my conclusion. OR Am I thinking too much about the ending and it was as simple as us the audience getting wacked and like the song says "It goes on and on and on and on".
One thing that makes me happy is that one of the few happy endings is Artie and his wife. Artie had his ups and downs, but finally rediscovered his passion, and ended up with Charmaine. His dad was right, honest work pays off in the end
We'll obviously never know for sure if Tony died or not - although David Chase, the show creator, once referred to it as Tony's "death scene" in an interview. That said, I think the arrangement of shots in the final scene shows pretty definitively that he did. Ultimately, it doesn't really matter if he died or not - the remainder of his life will be spent just like that final scene. Constant tension. Always looking over his shoulder. Always waiting for the other shoe to drop. The entire audience was endlessly tensed up during this scene and that's how Tony would spend the rest of his life. The hustle never ends.
No, he died. It's his story. That's where it ends. It was talked about as much. The alternative, with his face in the bowl of onion rings while his family screams, is just too much. At least to them, and I agree.
@@Mongo61 Yeah, and there was another interview where he called it a "death scene", the interviewer goes "you realize you just called it a death scene?" and Chase goes "Fuck you"
the signs are all out there that Patsy Parisi had Tony wacked, for many reasons, but mostly revenge for his twin brother Philly Parisi who was wacked by Gigi under orders by Tony.
When you talked about the greater impact of leaving it open ended, it reminded me of Twin Peaks. That’s another show with a similar ending - there was a huge cliffhanger, got canceled, came back for one season and then had another incredible ambiguous ending. It was created by David Lynch, and he’s even said exactly what you guys said about the Sopranos, that a mystery is eternal whereas a resolution shuts the door on thought and discussion. Idk if you guys have had people suggesting you watch Twin Peaks, but it’s amazing and one of the greatest and most innovative shows of all time.
I highly recommend The Wire. In my opinion it is in the conversation with Sopranos and Breaking Bad as the best series ever.
You guys are awesome! Best wishes on the new addition coming soon! 🙏🏼🎉🎉🎈
I think it was a fantastic ending. Because all these years later, people are STILL talking about it and debating what the ending means.
Many people believe that everything suddenly going black represents Tony being shot in the head and killed.
But, either way, the fact that people still debate it's ending is way better than any definitive ending

- Carmela the third person to walk through the door at Holsten’s
- Tony is shot at his 3 o’clock
- 3 onion rings
- 3 people at table
- 3rd “Don’t Stop” verse is where Tony is shot
- “Third strike and im out right?”
- The church bell rings after getting out of the hospital in Season 6A and the camera immediately goes from Tony’s face to his POV, looking at the church bell
- The bells on the dock ring when Tony is sitting and staring out at the lake in “Sopranos Home Videos”. The camera switches to Tony’s POV when he looks over at the bells
- Gene kills Teddy Spirodakis (TS) at gun point in his Members Only Jacket.. Tony gets shot by members only jacket 2.0 at gunpoint
- Tony is awake in bed in the Sopranos pilot.. Tony is sleeping to funeral music in the finale
- Silvio didnt even HEAR it until “it happened” when he was eating in the restaurant with that NY guy that got shot up.

Crazy when you think how Paulie and Janice of all people are among the few who actually survive everything. Paulie will have no problem becoming loyal to New York, and Janice always finds a way to land on her feet.
Throughout the show Paulie is one character who I never saw getting whacked. For whatever reason I just always knew he was going to be a survivor.
The last time you see the NY guys, they're meeting at a barbers shop
Paulie's next scene is him walking into satriales asking if anybody needs barbers scissors

Interesting point, definitely was a whole different vibe in the end. Much darker.
It's a pretty big gut punch seeing all the emptiness outside the pork store now
Greatest of all time...ehhh. it's great top 10 for sure but I'd definitely put The Wire and Better Call Saul above it.
@@clarktownsend8991 Nah. Better Call saul was always very flawed, that cartel thing grafted into the show with barely any connection to Saul was always a clunker. The Wire is certainly a masterpiece, but it's more prosaic and direct.

James gandolfini was so good that it hurts
i think the ending is great but disagree that it's clear what happens. the point of view theory ultimately doesn't work: the camera shots are not exact from tony's point of view, they are too close to the door to be. therefore, a pattern that would lead to blackness being tony's exact point of view is not established. i think the point is more that it doesn't matter what happens, the ending is more abstract - life will go on for whomever is left, as the series stops with tony's face and the words "don't stop"

Tony and Bobby discussed death a few episodes back, this is how Bobby said it probably goes. It's the perfect ending, it makes you feel abruptness and loss. There is nothing, it just happens and its over.
Silvio also said something similar after witnessing that hairdo guy get whacked in the restaurant.
It’s all a big nothing
Great reaction! Loved following the show with you guys.
Some observations about the ending:
The guy in the jacket goes into the bathroom, just like the murder scene in The Godfather.
Chase has refused to confirm but he slipped up once in an interview and referred to the scene as "the death scene."
Very good explanation!
This is old information. David Chase confirmed in an interview while promoting the Many Saints of Newark that Tony is dead and died in the diner.
@ashleyneku5432 no, he did not.
The beauty of this ending is that at first it annoys you but the more you think, read and hear theories about it, when you start to connect all the dots that were planted throughout the entire show, it becomes the greatest finale of all time.
Thanks for the reactions you guys✌🏻
There is no beauty in this ending. Don't even call it an ending. 15 years later I STILL hate it!
It’s definitely not the greatest show ending of all time as it still leaves this vagueness and emptiness after watching it. But at the same time it is a great ending. We started with these people at a random point in their lives and now we end with it at a random point in their lives. It’s not exactly a definitive ending but it’s a solid ending for the way the show was written.
it didn't annoy me, it confused me but also got across the message that Tony definitely died.
I agree with what you are saying and it makes sense, but the ending was still unsatisfying.
Nope! Heard every explanation ever. It was lazy and arts fartsy. Greatest show ever worst ending ever and David chase is a jackass
doesnt make sense. the series is not from tony's perspective and neither are the last shots. there are tons of scenes without tony in them, and the last shots are too close to the door to be his perspective.
That's just a theory people came up with.. Chase himself even gives no definitive answer

I dont like how Chase wavered on not saying ANYTHING, but THEN, after Gandolfini had passed away, THEN he comes out with Tony dying.
Weak.
Best. Show. Ever.
AJ just couldn't catch a damn break lmao
Cursed ass child
Indeed! We were spared the sight of an awful final scene. Our imaginations will be creative but…we were spared. Thank you.
No Question
-Every time the bell rings on the restaurant door; it’s the same, exact pattern.
-Remember the flashback with Bobby at the lake talking about death with Tony: “You probably don’t even hear it when it happens” (This was taken from Goodfellas)
-Black screen and no music during the credits to mourn Tony. Godspeed you gangster you.
Its brilliant because the episode has really dark ending when you consider Meadow walked in on seeing that happen to her dad and Carmella and AJ being covered in blood and yet, you dont see it... but know thats what happened
Also the bathroom would be at the 3 o clock position from Tony, tell tony and Paulie 3 o clock
And the gun in the bathroom in godfather
Exactly, Mr. Bleak. This is Soprano's life from this point on. "It goes on and on and on...."
David Chase confirms Tony was killed in a interview. It’s been on RUclips for 2 years
I wanted to see it, after all the horrible things tony's done lol.
"You probably don't even hear it when it happens right?" - Bobby Bacala
Very first shot of the episode, Tony looking like he's laying in a casket with organ music playing. Very funeral-esque lol
They telegraph Tony's death throughout the series. Remember, "it won't be cinematic."
Great discussion guys. I was kinda dreading this, but you did not disappoint. It was fantastic to see you go into "acceptance" haha.
It's crazy that Dominic Chianese is still alive and James Gandolifini isn't.
The woman who was with Agent Harris is the person he got Phil Leotardo's whereabouts from. She must have heard Harris talking to Tony, and that's why she was angry. The Best Show EVER!
Hilarious that you had the exact reaction most of the audience had. Anger initially then gradual appreciation for its brilliance.
That's the genius of the ending, you can't spoil it, there's nothing to spoil, because it just ends. Someone asks what do you mean, and you reply indeed, what DO I mean...it just, ends.
Thanks again for watching guys! ❤ been a lot of fun watching with you
Remember in the 2nd last episode, episode 20 the blue comet the man who shoots Silvio is wearing a members only jacket.
To paraphrase Bobby "I bet you don't even hear it coming. Everything just goes black"
The ending grows on you as time goes.
Agree. I love it
Agree
Sam's reaction was literally all of us when we watched this in real time. Thanks for making these reaction videos, though. It's like watching it again for the first time. I think back to what Bobby said to Tony on the boat. "It probably just all goes black." But that it's us, the viewer getting whacked. That's it, shows over.
Also there are some amazing videos out there that break down the whole scene and how the bell and the looks up play into what's happening. But you weren't alone, when this aired everyone was calling their cable provider thinking they missed the last minute of the show lol
Thank you for watching , incredible ride. Don't stop believing.
Thanks!
"I'm pissed!"
Yep, that was most people's reaction 🤣
"Semi-ambiguous" ending is why it so incredibly genius if you actually look at this scene more closely. The most important aspect of this final scene is Tony's POV after every time the door bell rings. The final time it rings we see Tony's last POV...black. Death. And thus for whom the bell tolls.
Loved watching this alongside you guys, your reactions are always so thoughtful and it felt like watching for the first time again!
Lol you guys are so awesome tha you could wait 18yrs when your kid is grown and come back on here and I'll be clicking that notificaaaaaaaation quick as hell lol
“You probably don’t even hear it when it happens, right?” - Bobby 😉
Exactly this. This isn't just a random line from the show...it's everything.
Much love.
Gonna miss those reactions from both of you. A great journey with a great show. Cheers.
The frustration, anxiety, and confusion that you felt in this episode is the best way to know what it’s been like to be in Tony’s head. There are great actors and actresses that have made me feel for their character. But this was the only character that I got a glimpse into the character’s head. Amazing finish.
"Damn! We're gonna win this thing!" ~ Agent Harris
Lol loved the brief cut to black😂
He told me. I said, "Well, make sure you have time to call me afterward." He goes, "You think I'll call you after the final episode?" I said, "No, I don't THINK you'll call me, I KNOW you'll call me." He called me twenty seconds after he finished it.
it was switching to Tony's POV with him looking at the door and the music.
I've enjoyed rewatching all of these with you! Great reactions, and I love that you changed the font in your title for this episode!
Love the scene when Butch is on the phone to Phil about backing out. I didn't notice the first time. Butch wants to back out and when he gets off the phone with Phil he's lost in China town. Direction he feels Phil is taking him and New York.
“You probably don’t even hear it when it happens, right?”

Or you have just made an excuse in your head to make it seem like it wasn't a let down of epic proportion. An implied ending makes no sense.
@dustinjackson3318 thank you. People stop defending this bullshit ending
It’s so brilliant and the reason why we are still talking about it over a decade later
Had a great time reliving my favorite show ever with you guys
The Wire had 5 seasons (60 total eps), so much shorter than Sopranos, which had 86 eps.
David Chase was quoted as saying that the ambiguity in Tony's ultimate fate was to show the audience that crime either pays or doesn't pay.
This is gonna leave a hole, Thanks for the great reaction to my favorite ever show ♥
Been a BLAST watching this with you two. You pretty much ran the gamut of all the emotions people had back when it aired.
incredible series, still remember that intro tune from way back when, and what great reactions guys ! I felt your emotions, thanks for sharing the ride
"Bye-bye, wave bye-bye, Grandpa. Bye-bye, Pop-Pop."
Have enjoyed your reaction to one of my all time favourite shows thanks.
If interested my theory on the ending-
Tony Soprano was shot in the head just as Meadow was entering the diner.
OR
Am I thinking too much about the ending and it was as simple as us the audience getting wacked and like the song says "It goes on and on and on and on".
I think both of you worked most of it out for yourselves.
Chase let it "slip" that Tony got clipped on Michael Imperioli & Steve Schirripa's podcast.
@@Mongo61 Yeah, and there was another interview where he called it a "death scene", the interviewer goes "you realize you just called it a death scene?" and Chase goes "Fuck you"
@@Notere Yeah people who don't think he died didn't watch the show correctly
the signs are all out there that Patsy Parisi had Tony wacked, for many reasons, but mostly revenge for his twin brother Philly Parisi who was wacked by Gigi under orders by Tony.
The more time that goes by, the more I like the ending of the Sopranos.
