  • In this video G-Wiz breaks down how to route larger sessions into groups for mixing using Universal Audio's Apollo Twin MKII with Solid State Logic's SSL SiX as a summing mixer.
Also we discover how to use the Apollo Twin's headphone jack to give you 2 additional outputs for your audio interface instead of the traditional 1-4 channels! Turn your Apollo Twin into a 6 channel output interface and route that sweet signal!

Found this while looking for demos of the SiX... really smart routing and bussing happening in your mix!
And I gotta say, as an owner of an SSL2+ ,I love what SSL are doing for the home studio market... the 2+ and SiX are affordable but don’t cheapen SSLs reputation as the “Rolls Royce” or pro audio.

Also, make sure you Gain Stage / Calibrate your system. You have an SSL now!
Know that those 3 sets of outs are all different.
Line 3 & 4 are better than Monitor L&R which is better than HP L&R.
    121 dB (A-weighting), 115 dB (A-weighting), 113 dB (A-weighting) respectively
Also, Also, the output Levels of the three sets of outs should be maximized for the most Dynamic Range and least noise.
When you set the output level low, then Gain up on the SSL, you are adding gain to both the signal AND the noise from the previous device.
I glanced at the manual for the twin and couldn't easily determine, but I suspect that if you run the L&R out all the way up, that's what UA calls Line or its best DR. Same for the HP outs, however they could have more gain in order to drive cans. And the 3&4 outs can be set to Line outs with no knob variable which is best.
Part of playing with SSL for analog audio is world class signal to noise / headroom.
You got it, now push it to the extreme!
    G.

Whats up G? I have this same set up. On my vocal chain Im using an external preamp and compressor. In which I won't be using the 48v power on the ssl xlr, because my mic is powered. Im trying to figure out my best routing option for recording. Do you think I should mix the beat, boause to stereo track first and record vocals on a stereo instrumental? Or would you record vocals on the mono channel on SSL and group the channels from the beat and route those through the remaining channels available on the ssl? I'm trying to figure the best way with this many channels. I know my vocals are usually mono, my sub bass and mostly all my drums are usually mono. My melodies and chords are stereo and I wanted the whole track going through the G compressor back into the daw. Knowing what you know, how would you configure this?

    • @G_handle
      @G_handle 4 года назад

      CzarPharo Yo Yo,
Well first off congratulations, that setup is amazingly solid, SSL SiX, UA Apollo, and you said you have external Mic Preamps and Compressors. (Which ones?)
Now, I can’t give a “Best” answer, nobody can. Music is subjective, there’s multiple ways to setup those pieces, and each way will produce different results. 10 Engineers will do 10 different things.
      That is my whole point!
To get quality pieces, then exhaust all possible combinations. In the process, you will both discover new sounds /music that inspire you, and master your tools, finding where they work, then sing, then fall apart.
Once upon a time, Recording was done in a recording studio and recording Session, Mixing was done in a Mixing Studio and Session, and Mastering was done in a Mastering Suite and Session.
Now, MOST music is probably recorded, mixed, and mastered in a bedroom on a laptop and interface.
That’s both democratized and de-professionalized the art and science of Recording.
      Pros and Cons.
There also used to be many more “best practices” in the Analog only days, when your multitrack was on tape, and there was noise everywhere. Now, we’re digital, at least the tracking, and noise isn’t nearly as relevant a problem.
But because of that, engineers also don’t spend time Pushing each piece of gear, as far as the can above the noise, up into saturation, and pulling back from distortion (the bad kind).
Engineers have to learn their instruments just like musicians, and there’s too much Capitalist consumer thinking where: “If I just buy the (name brand) ABC and plug it into the (brand name) XYZ, boom! Hit Record.”
      Off that soapbox:
Technically, any 2X2 interfaces with built in Mic Preamps will get stereo sources in and out of your computer.
For beginners, a hundred bucks gets you a Studio to learn 90% of what you need to know.
I recommend at least a 2X4 interface, because music is a collaborative game.
It’s often best to have at least 1 person ‘Engineering’ and another ‘Performing’.
With 2 inputs, you can record most sources other than Acoustic Drums, and with 4 outputs, you can provide a dedicated stereo “headphone mix” to each person, allowing each to hear what they need in order to Engineer and to Perform respectively and independently.
Stepping up to a UA Apollo, the price jumps dramatically, but so does the quality of each component in the device.
The built-in Mic Preamps, DI, Line Inputs, and A/D Converters are amazingly clean.
The 4 Line Outputs and Headphone Amp are also Pro Grade.
The included Console (and now Luna) software, give you a virtual version of almost everything you would need in a Recording Studio, with incredible , and usually untapped, flexibility and power over your tracking workflow.
The “Killer App” though, the thing that puts UA in a league of its own, is the combination of Onboard DSP that runs its their own dedicated Plugins which are among the best modeled in existence, especially their Unison Preamp and Channel Strips, into a system that allows for “Real-time “ processing through the Plugin Signal Chain, as if it were Analog Hardware.
If you only bought 1 Unison plugin, the Neve 1073 emulation (though now they have a 1084 I believe) gives you two channels of the most popular Mic Pre/Channel Strip of all time.
So to your question: I say this, unless your External Mic Preamps are REAL Neve Channel Strips, many times, no matter what external gear you have, plugging a microphone directly into the Apollo will be, not only the easiest choice, but the best choice to record a particular source for a particular song.
Along those lines, if the source calls for the cleanest possible signal, directly patching into the Apollo Mic Pre, and NOT using any Unison Plugins will result in pristine tracks, again when that’s called for.
Now adding in your external gear, plugging your Microphone into external Mic Pres, then from there into the Apollo’s Line inputs, with a lesser interface, that would usually result in objectively “Better” signals being recorded around the interfaces inadequate built-in preamp. But patching External Pres into the Apollo will be subjectively “Different”, and you have to decide if it’s the Better option or not.
Again this game is about options.
And your Apollo gives you many, including not just “usable”, but some of the Best options available anywhere.
So that said, your SSL SiX, being a Mixer, also includes 2 stripped down, but still very much SSL Channel Strips.
      FOR $1500!
There’s a thousand ways to patch those 2 devices, but one obvious way is to use the Direct Outs on the SiX into the Line Inputs of the Apollo, just like your other External Preamps.
This gives you another flavor in tracking: Mics into the SiX, engage or disengage the Channel EQs and Compressors, Ride the level on the way in.
Or you could use the SiXs Main Outs, and track through the Buss Comp as well.
Or even use the Talkback Input and engage the LMC if you want something crunched out.
The point again being, you have TONS of high-quality options and variety.
I think this YT video I was mainly talking about using these components for Mixing rather than Tracking.
But I will say that Both of these pieces are incredibly clean, provide a ton of options on their own, and make a fantastic centerpiece for a legit home studio that can play with the big boys.
And, money is obviously relative, but for under five grand, you can get results that too a hundred Gs not so long ago.
Hope that helps, didn’t really answer the question as much as give you more to think about.
But on some level, I’m rejecting the question itself, and trying to convince you that, some questions you don’t ever want anyone to answer for you.

    Dope!
But.....I'm pretty sure that your headphone to CH5 is only duplicating 5 onto 6. In other words, when you use the left of a stereo pair, not only on this SSL but often in the audio world, the left input will take a mono and put it on left and right. Then if you insert into the Right, it will break the normal, like a patchbay, and show up on the right. Left only gets both (dual mono), Right only gets only right side of mix.
To test your hookup, in Pro Tools, send something to the Twin HP and hard pan it left and right, the two meters on the Six would change if it was actually stereo, but if I'm right, they both move together. (Depending on how the Six deals with the TRS tip and ring, it may only show one side or the other, or sum them both, but it won't be the same stereo as in your DAW in the mix.)
What you need is a TRS to Dual TS cable known as an "Insert Cable", NOT A SPLITTER or Y CABLE.
They're made for TRS send and returns, but will also split out the TRS HP jack which is Unbalanced L,R,G into separate Left and Right TS.
You'll want to verify which is Left and Right regardless of the cable colors though, different MFRs change it up.

      @@LavaLampZone Heard!
Yeah health comes first, the toys will be right there waiting for you.
But when you're ready, peep the Softube Console 1 system.
I can break it all down for you later, but it's WAY MORE bang for the buck than it looks.
It's really 3 or 4 things at once.
We all came from real analog consoles. An SSL 4K or 9K being the dream to mix, but a Neve to track, say a BCM10 sidecar. SSL clean, NEVE fat.
Then everything moved in the box.
Interface PREs, ProTools and plugins, endless mouse clicking. Wack!
You got the Apollo, dopest thing being the Unison PREs that you can track through, so NEVE 1073 are back.
Then you got the SSL SiX, 2 SSL channel strips, 12 channels Analog Summing (more on that later), mixing into a G-Series Bus Compressor (plus you can track through it, or print bus stems through it etc) DOPE!
Now Console 1, is half software, half hardware controller. It puts an SSL 4K (to start) channel strip on EVERY track in your DAW, and let's you touch it like you would a real console. Except you don't have to slide your chair up an down the desk, the tracks come to you.
Shits insane, plus my guys at SSL said the plugins are better than their own!
But then....Softube and Universal got together, and the controller can run UA plugins too!
THEN....they came back with Apollo Central, which let's you press a button, and switch back and forth between controlling Softube Console 1 software, and Universal Audio Console!
With your hands, like real shit.
They mapped UA Console, and ALL the UA Plugins to the controller knobs to where it feels like UA built it.
And say on channel 2 you drop a brand new Avalon 737 plugin in the Unison slot, then an LA2A, into an 1176, followed by a Pulltec EQ, and you still have a slot so fuckit a 660, you gonna to adjust all those knobs with a mouse, nah, you press the 2 at the top of the Console 1, boom all the Avalon knobs are at your fingertips, wanna adjust the LA2A while you're artist is singing, press the 2 again to control that, 2 again for the next, 2 again for the next, all 5 plugins.
Say you don't have screen space, shift press a button to show or hide each plugin!
There's never been anything this fast in the history of recording.
Even if you had a "Million Dollar Studio" in the 80s, with a Board and crazy racks of Outboard, you still had to slide your chair to patch, then again to twist the knobs, all outside of the sweetspot.
Oh, and that fifty-thousand-plus-dollar Neve BCM10, get an Apollo 8P together with your Twin, and load all 10 Unison slots with 1073s.
Now, your DAW is a legit SSL 4K (or SSL 9K, or Neve, or API for less than 1 month's electric bill to run any of them), and with 1 shift-click, UA Console is your Neve sidecar (or anything else! ).
So now also, if you did add that 8P, those 8 OUTPUTS, together with the 4 on your twin, would let you use all 12 Summing inputs to your SSL SiX.
At that point nobody could fuck with you!
      G.

Hey man thanks for this video! I have a Six myself and I'm running into issues when I record the Stereo Main Mix Bus signal into my DAW - the final mix recordings have these strange sounds/phasing issues. I have my Apollo 8 sending DAW signal through channel 3 and 4 output to Ext 1 and 2 on the Six - then I have the Main Bus outs going from the Six back into my Apollo input channels 7 and 8. I also have Bus B outputs going to channel 5 and 6 on my Apollo.
So pretty much when I am summing whatever is going on in my DAW through the SSL and I want to record it back into my DAW (using the G BUS compressor) I get these weird ass noises on the final recording. I showed a friend, he said this happens often when using outboard gear to record final mixes. Do you have any suggestions or ideas on how to address this? Would really appreciate it!
Thanks again for your videos man keep up the good work!

Hmmm, have you checked your UA console? Try muting the monitor signal on channels 5-6, 7-8. Sound like you may be recording 2 signals at once.

I had some noise floor issues in the beginning, but G-Wiz gave some good advice in getting a grounding adapter for the plug. It’s like a couple dollars and it got rid of pretty much most of the noise for me. Also EXT 1 and 2 are stereo inputs. So output 5 and 6 should be on EXT 1 and outputs 3 and 4 or outputs 7 and 8 should be on EXT 2. Usually the lower number output should be on the left input, if not switch it. This should solve the phasing issues.

@@LavaLampZone yes you are right I was recording 2 signals at once. I had the tracks muted in Console but I had them on "Auto" while I was recording in my DAW and had to turn it to"Off". Now it works like a charm, sounds amazing

@@abaddon416 nice - I don't think I'm experiencing any phase issues now but there is an audible hiss at all times. Maybe the grounding adaptor can fix this? Is it for the power plug? Can you paste the link of the one you're using? Thank you!

Mark James III I bought it at Target. It’s just one of those adapters that turns a 3 prong into 2 prong. Make sure the label says grounded. Pretty sure they’ll have it at wal mart 2

Maybe not relevant for the twin but apparently the six can have up to 12 inputs: ruclips.net/video/eC1CORyQhMI/видео.html
