This is the best SSL/Apollo tutorial i've seen so far. THANK YOU!
The tutorial was on point… but damn those tracks in the background 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for take your time and explain so detailed this interesting routing config for those who want to maximize Apollo's outputs to give an warm touch to our mixes! Thanks from Puerto Rico men! Very helpful
cool vid...i've been bustin' my head trying to visualize apollo 16 with a mixing desk ..so the apollo in between the desk and the DAW...you got the whole 9 yards here of what was goin' on in mind.....respectamundo
Seems pretty simple when you explain it is really love to see a behind the scenes process of a mixing session more in the sense of watching dump in and out of the ssl
Really helpful video. Thanks bud. I'm getting a SiX soon and already have Pro Tools and a UAD Appollo Twin so this is perfect. Thank You for sharing!
You are putting it down great information videos bro much appreciated. Keep up the great videos
🙏🏿 thanks for checkin me out brother.
Man this is an awesome vid! Keep on teaching us bro.
Great information and the beat is dope. Salute 👊🏽
G-Wiz, thank you man I checked out your explanation on the Apollo Twin and applied it to my set-up. I am using the Apollo 8 into a Tascam M3500 32/8 Bus.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I had the hardest time figuring out how to send a smpte track from pro tools out to the mpc-60 smpte in...I got it done but, it was a hack job.
You Explained it perfectly!
Great Tutorial, I love my SSL SiX 🔥🎼💯 thank you
Thanks Magic!!!!
i could sure use some help figuring this out
Thank you for your help mood.s
Awesome I need to save this for later viewing
thanks for the useful info 🙏
What I needed to know mane! Beat smoooth too
Thank you brother!!! God job!!
Good review.Thanks
This is actually super interesting! I was thinking about getting an interface like the Antelope Orion studio to be able to utilize all the IO for recording, but the way you did it is super cool, might have to reconsider.
I’m thinking about getting that exact one too! And doing some analog summing there a rupert neve 5057 or 5059 satellite. But i really want a real mixer with faders & all that
@@ApolloJetsonKND I decided to go for an apollo cos i really wanted the plugins lol. But the orion is for sure the better value unit and with neve summing would be pretty much unbeatable! Defo with you on the real mixer with faders and that tho. The compromise im going for for now is the UF8 which still gives me the tactile control while not being annoying to deal with like a real analogue mixer. (also is pretty small for what it is so fits the desk nicely)
Great Tut!!! Thanks Brah Brah...
Great video thank you sir
Great, Thanks for this :-)
dope video
Bro might wanna change them xlr mic cables going from the ssl back into the Apollo to xlr to 1/4” so u can use line level on the twin so you won’t be double preamping. Dope video tho
I'm gonna try this
Great overview! Shows how less is really more! You watch the SSL Six in Action video? Does a great job showing creative ways to use Talkback as extra mic input for drum tracking and so much more. Shows how this mixer is a real secret weapon. I’d rather have a Six and Apollo Twin like you got rather than dump all my money into a larger interface and plugins. Can’t beat analog plus it’s fun!
I know right? It's so much more fun to produce music that way man.
Love your video bro I was thinking the same thing about routing into a mixer. But I think I’ll freeze. I have a really great sound connection. My Drug addtiction, MPCX= Roland TD-50 Apollo Twin Quad MacBook Pro. I down size just to get ride of all that. But I must admit the Apollo Twin is not going to take me far. Just like you said it’s like have a old tape machine. So I’ll make my next Drug Addiction Apollo X with Dangerous Music 2Bux Plus Or just the Apollo AP And use a Sum Cable back in to mic pres.
My brother you a real ☝️ one. Thank you for your videos you about to make me step my RUclips up.
Do it bruh! U can teach me some thangs too brother.
Lava Lamp Zone Recordings the part I was messing up was not having the 2 xlrs to the apollo. I got them now. Are you recording the vocals from the six as mono? Last question much respect tho
@@hypebeastdad Just depends. If I 'm bussing a set of vocals that needs panning, I'll do them stereo on 1-2. If it's only a mono vocal or instrument, I'll run it mono through ch 1 or 2 and add some eq and comp.
Keep up the videos fam .. you should do a video using StudioOne Presonus ... love the videos maan
Thank you!
Thanks so much for this! Been wondering how it would incorporate with a Twin. I'm on the fence about the Six cuz I'm wondering how I can incorporate it into my workflow. My sessions can be up to 25-30 individual tracks...I can see how bouncing through the EQ and compressor on the six could add some much needed life to each individual track, but I'm confused how it would all come together at mixdown time, especially if I needed to deliver a 4 or 5 track stem mix for mastering purposes. Please keep making these bro, I want to see more of how you're incorporating it into your workflow. Peace!
Great question! As the SiX is only going to give you the ability to do 3 stereo stems at a time, we also have to keep in mind that ch 3-4, 5-6 do not include the eq or compressor in their paths, especially if we want to add that to stems running through those channels. Essentially, you'd probably need to create groups out of those 25-30 tracks that you could send out stereo through the SiX and back into your DAW. Or you could also send those groups though the board ch 1-6, mix from the board and create your stereo stems back into your DAW that way! This could be time consuming but on the other handing, spending the time to do it would make for some pretty kick- ass stems for mastering. After all , who's complaining about sitting at a SSL for hours at a time tweaking knobs, mixing tunes and playing back some high quality mixes! I'll be sure to pull up a larger session and make a video of some theories and ideas I have for mixing larger sessions through the SiX. Stay tuned, I'll make that my next video. Keep on jammin' brother!!!
@@LavaLampZone Thanks so much! Would love to see how you handle a larger session, I will stay tuned! And you're absolutley right, who could complain about a deep dive mixing through some sweet hardware, would be a blast even if it took longer :)
we need one showing us step by step wire by wire showing complete hookup from beginning to end..thanks
How do you record vocals using the super analogue mic pre in logic
here it is!
DOPE 😎😎🤓🤓
great video man. I have an apollo twin mk11 and I was thinking of just using it for summing and mastering. I use logic pro x tho so I was wondering if it would be the same way with summing? When i mix in the box can I just route it the same way into the six and print back into logic?
Absolutely! U got the right idea! Jam on brother!
I wonder if yiu could expand to say 2 BigSix or run full 8 with ADAT to the Beringer X32.
Nice...Suppose I want to use the G compressor from SSL 6, but want to do some peak limiters from pro tools..Then I want to monitor UAD output. Is there a way to monitor the return from SSL 6?
wow man thank you very much for your knowledge hey could you make a tutorial on how to do it in ableton live ?? Could the same process be done with an ssl +2? thanks again keep it up crack!
yo man can you explain how many xlr and trs cables are needed for this. thanks
Aye bro can you route the B bus at the same time as the main bus and basically get a mirrored out from the mains and the B bus output in the back? I want to hook up a external meter
do one recording vocals with an instrumental tutorial..
Hey, I noticed that you're going back into PT via the Pre's on 1 and 2. The Main Out on the SiX is line level so you shouldn't go through the preamps back in. Doesn't the Apollo have line in? Or is that something you can change in the Apollo settings? Either way, cool video!
why am i only getting audio in when i press pfl
Great video man. All support here.
My question is about whether or not there’s ANY other gearslutty way to use the third in with the Apollo
Third in? I only have 2.
How are you recording vocals? I see this is for a beat. Are you reconfiguring the routing when you record vocals? You would think you would use 1 of the mono channels. How are you doing it? Basically showing more of what you're doing with the hardware routing is also very important. Thanks
would you say its worth buying a SSL 6 if you working with headphones?
shouldn't you be panning L/R in the console settings in UA, you currently got them straight up the middle ?
Hi man, I have an SSL Fusion and can not make it work with my Apollo Twin MK2. I'm coming out from 3&4 to the Fusion, then coming in to 1&2 in the Apollo. I took my Mix Buss in PT out to 3&4 and create an audio track with 1&2 input and Mon Ctrl output. I have signal coming in the Fusion, but nothing comes out, not even in the meters of PT. What do you suggest? Thanks.
Anyone know how to use a Samson mxp124 fx and Apollo Twin duo together??
The sample is by “Kool & the gang”
Should i have instrument or speaker cables from the interface monitor outputs into the six’s mono input while mixing?
I suggest balanced quarter inch cables or quarter inch to XLR cable. The SiX only has XLR on ch 1-2 and Talkback input. 1-2 also have quarter inch inputs. 3-4, 5-6 are quarter inch inputs. Main outputs from the SiX are XLR. Theres also D-Sub connections on the back of it as well!
I have a question, I could just route busses directly from my daw into this mixer to mix any genre of music right?
This feels a lot like producing music back in the day.
U got it! That's exactly how I feel about it. Takes me back to that workflow and feeling.
@@LavaLampZone I'm really considering this, but I will purchase console 1 first. If I feel too in love with that device I'll probably won't even buy this, but just for bus summing is pretty amazing xD
very helpful. nasty beat too
GREAT VIDEO
Thank you for checkin it out!
How would you track a vocal ?
why are the apollo lights like that
To Chicago Brothers 👍🏾🤛🏿
Question - I have a synth A, and a Pedal A. I want to play synth A but I want to mix the output of the of the pedal A. Is it possible to mix to Dry and Wet Signals? So 50% Pedal output and 50% Synth output. 2. Same scenario but I have to 2 pedals. Can I mix both pedals OUTPUT and my Synth together. Thanks
I don't see why not.
How much channels can you sum through the UAD? Is the Six good for analog summing?
Depends on which model. I'm using a twin so limited outs. 6 total.
How good is that G bus compressor. Thats what I really want it for.
It's pretty awesome man. Especially considering it doesn't have all of the parameters of a traditional SSL G Bus Compressor. They've done a great job at compacting it's most popular parameters into two knobs. At my first use of it, I was amazed at how it actually does "glue" my mixes together with a smooth silky touch. When I listen back to mixes in my car I'm always amazed that I get such a warm sound and so much depth form my home studio!!!
hahaha A1 ⚡️⚡️@@LavaLampZone
My man appreciate yurr wurk. Quik question. I have a Apollo twin as well with the six an I’m going out of 3-monitor channels on the Apollo into the 1-2 channels on the six and I also have the mic going into the 1st channel as well. I can hear me on the mic when I depress line an push 48v but I can’t seem to get a signal in my protocols daw as a output. How can I make this happen so I can record??
My boy Chingy! Ok so here's what we wanna do, instead of having your line channel outputs going to 1-2 on your SiX, plug those into 3-4 on the SiX. Leave channel 1- 2 dedicated to your microphones unless u need to eq your lone signal. From there, ure going to want to plug the outputs from the SSL into ch 1-2 on the Apollo Twin. In pro tools on your track you want to select input, assign to input 1 and you should be getting signal for that channel.
We basically want our signal flow to start at Ch 1 on the SSL, once we get board signal, then it'll go out of the SiX into ch 1-2 on your apollo. From there make sure your input in protools is set to ch 1, arm the track and see if you get signal. I hope I explained it correctly and hope this helps. Also double check the UA Console to make sure signal is hitting there on ch 1-2. As long as signal is hitting there if should be showing up in ProTools too. Let me know bro. If not, we'll get on the horn and troubleshoot a bit brother. ✊🏿
I’m on the road but soon as I get stable I’m going to see
@@chingybailey9407 Bet, let me know bro. We'll get u together in no time. Safe travels out there and kill them shows bruh! 💯👑💯
Lava Lamp Zone Recordings so nothing goes into the Apollo monitor?
@@chingybailey9407 That's correct bro. U're gonna use your SSL as your monitor control from now on. ruclips.net/video/Y3G3AMQIyfA/видео.html
Can you pls show us step by step if you dont maind how i connecting cabels thank you mohd.s
ruclips.net/video/hwf_BtPVwmo/видео.html
do you think this is just as possible to do in Logic Pro x as well? thanks man
Yessir! I use logic too!
figured it out oh yeah
Yo bro so what level have you found works good far as on the main mix fader? Like on yurr master fader what is a good level to be at
Just depends on what ure doin. Keep it at 0 or adjust it to meet a satisfactory level on your input channels. I like to push my mixer hard and adjust my fader accordingly for whatever it is that I'm doing bruh.
Hey so can you hook a external compressor to the Apollo twin mic preamp?
@@chingybailey9407 sure
So how would I do that
Nice videos. Can you do one with Presonus Studio One. I have a similar setup and can't get it to work
I don't have that DAW but I'd imagine the signal paths to travel the same way. It's all in the routing matrix Devon. If I come across a copy, I'll make a video on that for ya for sure.
Hey bro can you make a video on connecting the Apollo twin. I know you have it already connected and I'm just lost on how to get it all set up.
Will do. Thanks!
I second this request. I'm more of a visual person so I learn more by seeing what someone does then someone telling me. As small studio owners with this same set up, who don't have your knowledge for routing, this is great. We're trying to record songs, so knowing how you record vocals is very important to us to get this thing going. Seeing how or if you have anything plugged up in the back, this is all important. Then showing how you finally Routing everything back into the apollo would definitely be the icing on the cake.
Basically a more indepth tutorial on what you're doing between the hardware.
@@CzarPharo I would also like to make the same request. I know i'm close... do you have an email address you can be reached at?
So you do need an interface in order to run things through that board and get it back on the computer in ProTools?????
Correct. The SiX is purely an analog mixer with no audio interface feature. Absolutely best paired with an audio interface for going out and back into your DAW. The Big SiX is analog mixer + audio interface!
If I'm correct, I have a Steinberg UR22 interface and wouldn't be able to route like you did with the Apollo interface. Would need to get another interface???
Been making beats for some years now and now starting to invest in some outboard EQs/Comp...Any suggestion? Anything that’s a solid buy?
Also your beats hella clean the mix on them a professional af.
There's so much out there bro. Just depends on what ure looking to achieve.
@@SupeBeatz I appreciate that brother. 💯💯💯
Man just something they’ll help quality wise, I got a decent amount of major placements and all but I’m not satisfied with my sound. Looking for something that’ll help with stereo separation. Plugins help but just don’t get me the sound I’m trying to achieve.
Lava Lamp Zone Recordings no doubt you nice g, you in Atl??
So how does the Ssl six sound compared to the UAD Ssl channel strip??
Sounds much more analog and gives me much more depth and dynamic range. I have the UAD version as well. The Plugin gives you more options as far as parameters goes but it still has a really clean digital sound as opposed to the SSL SiX which gives you much more body/weight and warmth. Also I'm able to push the levels on my mixes much harder. UAD sounds great but analog will always be analog. Keep on jammin!!!
Lava Lamp Zone Recordings
So I’m using the Apollo 8 blackface and the Apollo x16. Both are feeding my Dangerous dbox and the Dangerous 2 bus plus. This gives me 24 channels of analog summing. Do you see a possible sonic benefit by adding the Ssl six in my setup??
@@RodneyD This setup sounds incredible!
Do I see a possible sonic benefit by adding the Ssl six in my setup? I've never used the DBox but I've always heard great things about it.
Sonically I'm assuming the differences would mainly be the coloration of you sound as well as tone shaping. I really enjoy the eq's and dynamics sections on the SSL SiX. I feel like they give me that classic SSL analog feel I've always enjoyed and wanted to incorporate to my sound. Not necessarily loudness but wider dynamic range and sweet tones when I hit the meters really hard. With that being said it just depends on what sound u're looking for. I even push my meters so hard purposely of course sometimes that they start to distort and it just adds a different harmonic coloration to it which I love!
When I play my mixes back from my small home setup on the bigs (Speakers) or in my car, it sounds like I just left and played back a mix off the big consoles in Paramount Studios in Hollywood, CA.
I'm in it for the dynamic range and color of the sonics more than just the ability to push harder to be louder if that makes sense.
Another thing I might add is that you may have too much I/O if you are currently separating all 24 channels. I'm maxed out at about 10 channels but I send my stems through in groups. I only use 6 because I'm only using the Apollo Twin but if I had the Apollo 8 or 16 I'd definitely take advantage of all 10 channels on my SSL SiX.
Sorry to ramble but I hope that helps! I bought it to try it and return it if I didn't like it but it's been woking out amazing for my setup. Couldn't ask for much more other than more I/O from my interface.
Keep on jammin brother!!!
Lava Lamp Zone Recordings
That’s bro for your detail answer. I just bought the MPCX and it has 8 outs. Maybe I could use the ssl six with my MPCX and come up with that fat ssl sound for the drum samples.
@@RodneyD that's just what I was about to say! ✊🏿
Is this the same process for Logic Pro X?
Yup!
do a studio one set up..
I noticed your session sampling rate is 44.1 KHz......There is no need to use this anymore as CD's are pretty much obsolete. Go 48KHz at the minimum and you will use more the great potential of your setup there. Thanks for the info.
U are absolutely correct! Not sure how I missed that. Thank u for the informative post! 🙏🏿
Lava Lamp Zone Recordings - Go 96khz man, I don’t see anything else holding you to be able to go for a higher sample rate. 🤙🏼
@@quantika72 done deal!
Lava Lamp Zone Recordings
96k will max out the dsp quickly on the twin.
No, No, No.. Keep it at 44.1. There isn’t an audible difference. 96Khz would just be fucking ridiculous and a complete waste. If you’re going to increase anything, Go up to 32 Bit Floating point and mix down at that, but that’s still something you really wouldn’t need to do, it does do more than increasing the sample rate though. You should never just listen to some random smuck on the internet. You shouldn’t even listen to me, but it’s worth reading about from a reputable source, which is what I did.
i also noticed u had some channels muted on the console
Yup. You don't want to get a mirrored monitor signal.
How route if using db25 connection
Same principle applies. I don't use db25 connections due to my Apollo twin but routing should be the same I'd imagine Brother Goldie. What's your setup?
SSL six into the Apollo twin duo but I have db25 connector...it’s complicated so I might go trs to trs snake into outputs
