Ok, Nathan, you've got me. My EQ'ing totally looks like a topographical map with all the "surgical cuts" I've been making due to sweeping and boosting to find "bad frequencies :) I might need to cut back on the sonic surgery haha. Really appreciated this, even as I've been working on this stuff for a few years now.
I also use EQ modulation to make a nice high pass low pass filter that changes in lead melodys. By moving the bell up and down the spectrum and recording the movements. It's best to have a second bell modulation moving around to reduce peaks that might clip. I do it in nearly every song I make to a greater or lesser extent.
I’ve got a pretty good understanding of EQ, but I’m watching this anyway because…hello, it’s Nathan James Larsen. Who’s to say he can’t teach me something new?
Best visualization of a parametric EQ. I’ve been using 7 Band EQs with my guitar and Marshall amp. The improvement in sound quality is mind blowing, the EQ also acts as a preamp/boost. I bought an Ibanez Pentatone 5 band Parametric EQ from Sweetwater for $129, and have been playing with not only the levels of boost & cut, but frequency and Q. It’s lowest frequency is 3k and the highest is 14k. Effective audible range is 100k ~ 7k. So adjusting the target frequency then dialing Q (width) I can get a very natural tone. If you aren’t using an EQ in your fx loop, you’re really missing some magic.
I've never understood people who never uses EQ 😃 Everyones hearing is different and also headphones. Who says that a DAP has the right setting for you right out of the box? I EQ the hell out of all my headphones to get the right setting for my hearing and my liking. I spend hours fine-tuning.That satisfying feeling of getting it just right is amazing and the music becomes alive.
Thanks Nathan for your informative video. Can you please clear up my confusion on where to EQ from. Should I EQ on each instrumental track, or from the master track? If adjusting frequencies on the overall master mix, how can an individual instrument be isolated from the main mix ? Thanks Nathan for clearing up confusion.
I’m still struggling to understand. How do I know how to change the graphs for what my sound needs? Is there a prerequisite video that would help me get to a better understanding before I try to understand this one?
Hi Nathan! Thank you for an amazing tutorial and effort! Please could you tell us (if you remember) which piano library you used for this example? It is fantastic! Thanks again!
I’m working with virtual orchestral instruments in Logic. Should I approach EQ just as I would live instruments? I’m hoping to make it easy on myself. I’m a beginner.
Thank you Nathan for this valuable video. As a beginner producer I feel like I need an experienced musician to judge my musical compositions since I’m still not well versed in music theory. It just feel like what I compose is completely bland and lacks. What is your take on this and what are some places I can go to find these kinds of mentors.
I'm an artist and I have project that sounds decent and a preset but I can't seem to find a video explaining what to do when you hear a certain sound or something that explains specifically what changing the db on something does. My best thing I get from videos like this is listen until you think it sounds good but it does just not quite at radio quality. And that's my missing peace. Do you have a video like that or should I just keep messing with different compressors, eq, and reverbs to get a decent sound? I'd like to profit from this so I can pay engineers or idk be free n make a living lol
What do i do if im using bandlab tho? What i mean is that i cant really see the spectrum, neither visualize the "bad" frequencies. Anyways great video as always
Nice video, thanks for imparting this knowledge.... Just 1 question though, which software did you use in minutes 3 to 5 to show the waveforms ? and is it free ?
Thank you very much for this. This is the first video of yours that I've ever watch and I know it's two years old, so maybe you've changed; but you can drop the guitar riff. It was really distracting/slightly annoying to have in my ears (I had headphones on) while trying to paying attention and absorb what you were saying. But in all, thank you for the breakdown and explanation to help me understand how to actually use this tool.
Great vid! Clear & concise. I was wondering, couldn’t find this info online or in the Logic Pro EQ manual. Can you solo a certain band of the EQ to hear just how that frequency band sounds for the audio region it’s on? Or is that only something that the Multiband Compressor can do? Thank you!
If the threshold of an EQ is 0db why would we try to breakthrough it? Shouldn't we be mixing the sound to not clip, and use something like -10db as the baseline?
dB in an EQ plugin is not the same as talking about global decibel ranges. When boosting an eq - don't think of it like we are "breaking past" 0dB - instead it is simply ADDING that amount into the signal. We still need to know what amount is being added - so a 5dB boost at like 8k is only adding 5dB to that frequency range. Yes, this makes the end signal louder - but you can simply turn it down. This isn't one of those things you need to get overly concerned about unless it's causing your whole signal to clip - in which case - just turn it down before the EQ.
Nope not disappearing! We have a ton of new content in the works - end of the year was rough for me health-wise so I had to take a bit of a break and focus on other things.
When you are doing these types of audio examples, the worst thing to do is have that hard rock playing as background the whole time, even if you are shutting it off just before you let us hear the example. By the time we listen, our ears are getting adjusted/fatigued, by that massive amount of frequencies being thrown at us with that hard rock. Our ear can't adjust to the detailed sounds you are trying for us to hear, because it has been adjusted to deal with the scream/screeching sound to that hard rock
Hello beloved always remember we must repent of our sins (sin is transgression The Law Of Yahuah The Father in Heaven. The Law are The Books: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, & Deuteronomy). We must repent of our sins and Have Belief On Yahusha The Messiah. HE Died and Rose three days later so that we can be forgiven of our sins! Come to HIM Today. Much love!
CORRECTION: I said I sang an A at 440 but I actually sang an A an octave below 440 at 220 so the harmonica are above NOT below!!
What’s your price for mix and master man?
Bro im sure you probably get this all the time, but do you charge to listen to people's songs an give them some feedback on there mix/master??
I heard something about Quincy Jones disagreeing about the modern placement of the A note? Do you know what I'm talking about here?
Thank you! I noticed that and was gonna say something, but you beat me to it! Well done!
I was going to say.. But this is good! Concise, v nice. 🎶✨🌟👍

Thank you for making this video! It took me a while to find something that was plain and simple for people just getting started. You nailed it!
agreed 100% i watched like 4 videos before this, but none were as simple and clear at explaining as this one
I’ve got a pretty good understanding of EQ, but I’m watching this anyway because…hello, it’s Nathan James Larsen. Who’s to say he can’t teach me something new?
Haha! Appreciate it! 🙌🏻
can always improve and sharpen knowledge very open minded thing to say
Your videos are all very clear and really helpful, just wanted to let you know that I appreciate it very much! cheers mate

I had to check the play back speed because of how much good info i got in such a short time, great vid
This is a beautiful explanation of EQ

Bro how will we get to know the exact frequency number we are singing? as you said 220?
Just earned a new subscriber 🙌🏼
Thank you. This is one of the best tutorials I’ve seen on this topic. 👍👌
This is so helpful! Thank you!
This is incredibly useful.Thank you
Thanks so much for the cliff note sesh on EQ!! I locked your method in my banks! ;)

Finally I get it!!!!! Thank you!!!!
Brilliant tutorial
omfg i watched it to the end for "EMOTIONAL QUODRA(EQ)" 😭😭😭
Plz upload more like this...
Good some substance maybe can learn some something. Do you go into depth like masking phase etc.
Absolutely loving
For me. It's very comprehensive. Could not be explained better.
so if all the frequencies sound bad when boosted, how do i know what truly sounds bad in the mix/within the sound?
Very very true

Do you do any audio consulting?
Super helpful! Thanks
Please.

Not sure about the Logic EQ, but you can in the Ableton EQ and the FabFilter Q3
You are a saint🙏
Great video, thanks!
How do you get from eq page back to template page? Now when the project is opened it opens in eq page. Help
Thanks.
Thank you!
thanks❤
Best video about mixing I’ve seen on RUclips. 🙌🏾🙏🏾
bloody brilliant

Great Video Nathan
Thank you! 💪💪
Great vids

Fantastic 👍🏾
Haven't seen you on ytube for minute..I hope you're not disappearing on us.
Nope not disappearing! We have a ton of new content in the works - end of the year was rough for me health-wise so I had to take a bit of a break and focus on other things.

Thanks! I put it on .05x speed so it was more than 10 mins.
