- Showing how to fix weak or mushy brakes by replacing air with mineral oil on shimano brakes this simple bleed can be done on most modern shimano brakes. This method can be used for setting up brand new brakes that have not been bled, or used for old brakes that have slowly gained air overtime.
Just got new brakes fitted at the mechanics and they come back spongey! thanks for the help, straight to the point and easy to understand! cheers
Great camera work, showed all parts of the process. Thank you, helped a lot to someone who never knew a thing about bleeding breaks! Very simple.
LukeP simplicity is key 😂 great you found it helpful
Awesome video ! Before I watched this my brakes was next to useless but I ordered myself a brake bleed kit and followed this video and now my brakes are like brand new thanks guys 👌👌👍
Great to hear!!
My breaks have been squeeky and very weak!! I'm so annoyed! thank goodness for RUclips, and of course, you guys you're a great help! now I know what to do.
No worries man happy to help!
Literally same Shawn, did the bleeding help?
Lubricant the brake disc if they’re squeaky. Ideally use axel grease but any grease will do
Thanks my dude, now i know that i have to bleed my brakes since my bike hasn't been to a mechanic for awhile
The Lone Strummer no worries man!
Short sweet and to the point, great video.
Instructions not clear, ended up throwing my bike in a canal. Sort it out lads.
I thought it was real for a second
Are you for real? XD
Thank you for the instructions!
It would help If you'd put the names of each part needed in the description below the video, or even better a link to where to buy them. Because I couldn't really get the name out of the audio.
Well presented guys, great informative vid.
Thanks!
Good work. Super easy to follow. Thanks
Brilliant work. Nicely presented. Thank you
I didn’t no it was that easy,,cheers guys,,do I need to take the old oil out or is it ok,,where did you get the bleed kit from
there are tons of universal brake bleed kits or amazon, good bike shops will also have these.
Video makes it look very simple - is it? On a scale of quick bike maintenance, with 1 being removing disc brakes to 10 (tightening spokes properly) where does this stand? Hoe much "touch" or "feel" goes along with this?
PS, yes, I've turned inexpensive problems into expensive ones trying to replace my own spokes. There is an art to it!
Honestly only a 3-5 very easy with the right tools. Goodluck!
Great video guys. Learned a few things on there.
No need to rush the video guys - more details the better :) Was trying to see if my brakes are the same & if my screws are in the same places you were showing.
Adi B cheers thanks mate 🙏
Just got new shimano brake sets (since i last crashed in october) it felt so weak unlike when i first bought my bike any tips on how to fix and what's the issue?
Firstly are they the same brakes? Secondly new brakes take time to bed in.
@@KrankProduction yes i bought it myself and like usual, they were in a box so i think it's aight to say they were the same and how long do you think before they bed in? It's been like almost a month? (Maybe) But i appreciate that you replied thanks alot man 💯
@@drunk_towin16 Couple things that could have gone wrong...
1. the new pads havent been bed in correctly, did you clean the rotors before installing the new pads?
2. new brakes need a bleed usually if they've come from shimano
I would try youtubing "how to bed in mtb pads"
Welcome!
Great information - thank you from Germany 👋
Thanks for watching!
Hello guys. I purchased a pair of disc brakes the rear is great but I don't like how I have to press the front trigger all the way down to get brakes. What can I do
I’ve been literally leaving my bike to my bike cycle mechanic to fix this and they never done it once probably cause I don’t know shit. But thanks for this information!
I took my wheels off to wash my bike and when I put it back together the levers would pull in much further (not quite to the bars) and feel slightly weaker, is this sudden change still because of the oil? I didn’t do anything to the breaks other than take the wheels off.
Do I need to take the brake pads out??
Thank you kids, great video!
So I had no idea what I was doing with my tektro brakes and was trying to replace the pads which I guess didn't need replacing but down at the caliper I unscrewed the wrong screw right and all the liquid leaked out and now my frying brake has 0 power, when you pull it, it goes to the handle bar with 0 effect, I tried the brake bleeding thing with a kit I ordered with the correct mineral oil but still my brake has zero power what am I doing wrong how can I fix it please, I don't understand it very much and it's very frustrating, I just want my bike to work right please help someone
I cant help much without more detail, would recommend taking it to a bike shop maybe...
What to do I have tightened that funnel bolt very hard it went little deeper when it was before pls tell me
If the screw is threaded you will need a new lever.
I have a problem my bike fell over and it fell on my brake and id became loose is it broken?
Great video gents! Many thanks
No worries mate hope it helped out
is there a way to do this without the funnel?
Mineral oil from the supermarket is cheaper and exactly the same and why not get a bleed hose and push the air out the bottom through the caliper, then the pads can stay in?
its not exactly the same there's many different grades of mineral oil i'm not saying your brakes won't work just not sure on how reliable they would be plus you would more then likely be mixing different kinds like what ever was in your system first and the supermarket stuff might not mix well
@@justinherman5047 as long as its nit baby oil its the same product, baby oil has lanolin or some other additive, i forget now
@@justinherman5047 I've had baby oil in my brakes for a year, noticed no performance issue. No seal wear either. Which you would expect if it's a different grade of mineral oil.
i have old deore brakes, is it possible to upgrade only the levers to 2020 model but cable hose and calipers will retain?
thanks you so much
I have done a ton of lever and caliper mix and matching just making sure the nipple size in the hose is the same
Typically, what volume of fluid refills one brake?
Hi, I just bought a bike. The brakes were good for the first two days and now the barely lock.
Can you explain what they feel like? Do they make a squeel or just lost power?
Good video lads well done helps me alot 👍
@1:50 was telling a friend this yesterday. :D
Great video, keep it up....
What do i do if i dont have that yellow tool
I just got my bike serviced 2 weeks ago. I got sick for a week left it in the garage and I come back to my back brake which is a hydraulic squeaking and not working. The main reason I got it serviced was for the exact same thing. Any ideas on what has happened?
will be a leak if its pulling to the handle bar that quick
@@KrankProduction oh ok, in the hydraulic fluid stuff u put in the breaks? I have that. Would I just need to top that up?
@@buckpuls I would just try and check for leaking fluid, and replace the leaky seal or part. Refilling is a temporary fix. Honestly without more detail it's hard to help :)
Thanks man! Big help
What the yellow piece you slot into caliper known as?
Bleed block I'm pretty sure, you can use a piece of wood...
@@KrankProduction Since you are not opening the system from the rear why do you need to take off the rear wheel?
This is a great video.
Thanks guys really helped me out
No worries!
I have a 4 piston hydro brake on the rear and I removed the two piston bolts and when I tightened them back in my brakes went loose, before I removed the screws my brakes were fine, how do I fix this? It’s for my surron btw
did you ever fix it ?
@@e.huss1 yes, hydro brakes arent meant to be squeezed or pumped when there isnt a disc brake in between the pads, so i just had to pry the piston to spread again and bled my brakes at the bike shop
@@Danielxperez14 i bought a bike bleed kit ,new brake pads and ipa alcohol ,i'm going to do it my self. how much did you pay for the bleed at the shop?
@@e.huss1 they fixed it and everything for 25$
perfect, thanks!
Thank you so much 💓
where to buy the repair kit?
i have tektro hydros should i get tektro mineral oil or does it not matter
Tektro brakes are mineral oil. It will work with shimano oil or tektro
Use baby oil or water , or possibly cooking oil. You’ll be fine
@@Bianchiboy Don't tell him that. 😆
Mine works giid they stop me fine but it huts my other fingers unless there all on the lever
Some brake levers have different designs on how many fingers are meant to be on. The more expensive the less pressure needed in general.
i cant find anywhere to buy oil for brakes
Baby oil works
@@KrankProduction idk bc my brakes is avid and your is shimano
@@proffseterik2580 Avid uses DOT fluid Im pretty sure have a google for alternatives...
Nice
i saw the kids face and was wondering whether to take this video seriously.
John GTA okay....?
@@KrankProduction this reinforces my view that looks can be deceptive. you young men did a wonderful job, great informative video. thumbs up.
You can use any brake oil just has to be mineral oil
I don’t recommend it but if you were desperate you can use baby oil
I use mineral oil steering fluid
Good video. Thanks :)
is this the same with shimano mt 200?
To my knowledge yes.
thank s
You dont need to remove your wheel while doing that or use any kind of spacers ;)
yes u do, or else how will you remove the brake pads?
@@e.huss1 i can remove my brake pads in both ways so i dont need to remove ny wheel
@@GrizzJibber probably depends what wheel/bike u got but most people have to remove the whee to make it easier as it’s damn impossible to work with the pads
instructions unclear, forgot where i put my liver.
Don’t forget to degrease the liver keep it free from oil 👍
Thanks mate
Why does no one address whether it's a top off or a bleed?
It's a bleed, air is trapped in the system meaning you need to top up/bleed the system.
It's two different phrases meaning the same thing
Liver? Where?
If you have spongy Shimano brakes, ditch them, and treat yourself to a set of Maguras.
Haven't had that problem, Maguras have a plastic feel.
don't mean to stink up your video but when your bleeding your brakes to get all the bubbles out you need to pump up the lever hold it like you did with the velcro strap and release some fluid right at the brake caliper its the screw right next to the brake line you put a small hose on it first and a pop bottle or something to catch the fuild that comes out then you top up your master cilnder before releasing the strap then you tap for bubbles again flick the lever repeat two or three times till there's no more bubbles o and when you take out the bleed screw on the lever careful not to lose the little o-ring thats on it it some times stays in the body and not on the screw your little cup can pick it up when you remove it and your brake will leak from that screw hole good vid other wise
Thanks for the reply!
Well, you are not replacing, you are refilling.
dude, think you could talk a little slower?
dude, you can slow the video 😂
hvsd
patrick jack ??
My back brake is completely dead but I dont even have the necesarry items to repair it :/
Get it on Amazon prime kits will be as little as £5-15
@@KrankProduction I am poor rn so I'm gonna try the syringe method, but I am missing mineral oil, can I use any other type of oil?
@@Caliente17 you can use baby oil! It works fine make sure not to mix it with the shimano oil though.
@@KrankProduction alright, thanks for the advice
