I filled my mountain bike brakes with baby oil for a year and here are the results!

  • A little over a year ago we filled the rear hydraulic brake of my fat tire mountain bike with baby oil, instead of Shimano Brake oil. Now over a year later, we're going to tear apart the brakes and look at all the most vulnerable components under a microscope to see if they degraded or changed in any way.
    This video is just for entertainment, and I can't recommend that you fill your brakes with baby oil. With that said, this will always be the baby oil fat bike and it will always have baby oil in the brakes until they fail. Maybe it's time we name this bike...

      The reason being Shimano brake fluid here costs $18 for 1 liter jug. And you cannot get smaller quantity. 1) It's stupidly expensive for mineral oil. 2) What the hell am I gonna do with 1 L when brake system takes what....30-40 mL? No way I'm gonna bleed my brakes 20 times in my bike's lifetime.

    When I rode trials, alot of us ran our magura hs33's on water, or water with a drop of anti freeze in winter. It made the breaks less spongy, more responsive, and lighter to pull. You'd get about a year out of the seals, but most trials riders broke a lever or something before then and had to get a new brake anyway! I'd be more than happy to use baby oil in a pinch :)

    • @walz1986
      @walz1986 2 года назад +3

      Doesn't some manufactures also use special breakfluids that are basically water with anti freeze and of course some othe viscosity reagents? Like for example SRAM. They normally perform as well as hydrolic breaks with oil. But of course they can freeze and that means they are a bit more sensible to low degrees(The brakes may not work or the water expands below 4 °C and this may damage the tubes). But on higher temperatures water does not expand as much as oil...

    • @vicentesaenz560
      @vicentesaenz560 2 года назад +3

      I remember doing the same....But I just used anti freeze as it was more common at home than distilled water. I used to grease the pistons from the outside every now and then and seals lasted forever....I also remember scratching and adding waterproofing the rim so it was sticky to the pads. But down slopes the question was what to sacrifice: the hebo shoes or the new brake pads.

      Seals and oils must be compatible, or the oils will slowly(or rapidly) soften and expand the seals... and fail at a bad time(usually). What works for a tractor's hydraulics might not work well in cycle brakes, fork oil, differential lube, etc.
      There's a reason why there are so many different lube formulations, and it's not about making more money(for the vast majority of lubes). It's about application and compatibility.
      Sure, you can cheap out on maintenance, but why would you do that on something that keeps you out of the trees?

I started this after a colleague of mine was telling the story of him riding through Africa with a HS33 and no proper oil within a 300mile radius. So he just used water. Aslong as the temps are fine you can use almost any liquid that doesnt dissolve your seals.

    I had the same idea with my tractor's hydraulic system, so I researched it. Proper oils will usually include rust inhibitors and detergents so that they'll cope better with any water contamination that gets into the system. This is honestly a lot more likely on a car or tractor where the reservoirs have lids that just open by hand. Tractors even have quick disconnects to remove front loaders etc, so they're way more likely to get contamination in the oil. On a bike the system is sealed and there's really no reason to require special additives in the oil.

  • @nathanh281

    Thanks Seth for resisting the temptation to simply say all the hydraulic brake manufacturers are ripping us off - this is a nuanced (and entertaining) view.
    While I'm not going to experiment with my braking system to save (maybe) a few bucks a year, it's good to know if my hydraulic brakes have a problem while I'm bikepacking and I come across a town with no open bike shops, I can get by with baby oil in one brake without any immediate obvious consequences.

    Thanks... I have a shop and I have been in situations where I could not get recommended brake oils. So I went shop to shop looking for baby oils with mineral oil content. In this country, you cannot find them!!! And unlike the USA where you can buy mineral oil in many stores, it seems people have never heard of it here! So in my search, I found Vaseline Hair Tonic (Blue) to have the maximum amount of mineral oil... I used it to top-up and it worked like a charm. I still keep it as spare. But now I have plenty of recommended mineral oil at hand AND I just ordered a lot of "cutting board" mineral oil to use as a substitute!
    Thanks for the video... I have no doubt that baby oil with the highest percentage of mineral oil will work just fine. But as you say if it may not pass some tests, specifically because of concentration (percentage) of mineral oil.

    I was in a pinch and used what i had, 'transmission fluid' in my Magura disc brakes. its thicker which makes it more work to bleed. But works just fine. Zero problems.

    I've been running pure Mineral Oil (the non-baby formula) for years now, and will say that it holds up as well as name brand brake fluid. But with 1 major caveat. If you're going down a long hill and just riding your brakes, the Mineral Oil does get spongier faster, but I've had Metallic pads loose their friction coefficient and the rotor get red hot even before the brakes became really spongey.
    Yes, the name brand stuff will last longer, but depending on your riding habits, the Mineral oil off the shelf vs brand name stuff might not even make a difference. But even then, I feel Mineral Oil can be had for so much cheaper than the brand name stuff, that you could probably replace the fluid at least 100 times with mineral oil before getting close to spending the same amount on the brand name stuff.
    Personally, I've gone through about half of a 16oz (473ml) bottle of Mineral oil at $2, exchanging the fluid pretty much every other month. At that rate, it's still way cheaper than the brand name stuff that usually sells 100ml for $10 or more.

    • @sebastianjost
      @sebastianjost 3 года назад +5

      The thing is: 100ml bottles of Shimano oil cost 10$
      1l containers cost about 15 to 20$.
      It seems you pay more for the packaging process then for the actual content.
      So if you buy large enough quantities, the price gets very low too.
      And even then: you can spend 30-60$ on a dropper lever, 10-30$ on grips and so on... 10-20$ for brake oil isn't that big of a deal.
      But then again, if other stuff works fine for you, save money if you think it's worth it.

      I have a big jug of Food grade mineral oil I will be using...don't need stinking overpriced "special" oils that cost 10X more! Hydrolics is a simple concept...a bike system never gets as hot as astoping a 2 ton car!

      At some point, the added confidence in a company that developed its own brake fluid is worth paying a few dollars more for, and taking a few less stops at the coffee shop in a year to compensate.

    I actually ran pharmacy mineral oil in my brakes a while ago. It does NOT work for cold conditions as the temp. drops the viscosity goes up a lot and it meant that my brakes be hard to pull and once pulled would stay there. Definitely sketchy. Replacing with real stuff immediately fixed the issue.

    I have the similar brakes on my 10kw electric bike (Simano M395 but the colour is white) and I have been using rapeseed oil in them going on 5 years now. Never had an issue, and the stopping power is just as good. I'm sure that almost everybody will have some sort of cooking oil in their kitchen somewhere. I did this at first as an emergency as I never had any of the proper mineral oil, but after using it for a while with no noticeable decrease in stopping power, I just kept on using it. I would say that this method may even be the cheapest way to obtain brake oil.😁

      the freezing temperature of rapeseed oil is -10 degree so in cold day you will notice molecules move slower brakes get stiff and eventually damaged when frozen also boiling temperature if around 170degree which half of mineral oil

    Cool vid I think that contamination of the seals should happen quite quickly if the oil is not compatible with the brake system. Baby oil might have a lower boiling point because some of the fragrances might boil first but pure mineral oil should be ok.

    • @bendenisereedy7865
      @bendenisereedy7865 Год назад +1

      No. See my explanation in the main thread. Perfume is there at 0.3% and will have a similarly high boiling point to light mineral oil.
